SND USA MISSION STATEMENT

A Catholic congregation of women religious, the Sisters of Notre Dame of the United States are united in one heart, one hope, and one mission to proclaim God’s goodness and compassionate love for people of all faiths and cultures through a variety of ministries, both national and international, particularly serving those who are poor and marginalized. Sisters of Notre Dame of the United States Regional Office 1776 Hendrix Ave. Thousand Oaks, CA 91360 805-917-3714 | info@sndca.org | www.sndusa.org

Dear Friends,

Henri Nouwen, the great spiritual writer, expressed his vision of a mosaic in Bread for the Journey. He wrote, “A mosaic consists of thousands of little stones…When we bring our faces close to the mosaic, we can admire the beauty of each stone. But as we step back from it, we can see that all these little stones reveal to us a beautiful picture, telling a story that none of these stones can tell by itself. That is what our life in community is about.

“Each of us is like a little stone, but together we reveal the face of God to the world.”

With these words of inspiration, welcome to our 2020 Impact Report for the California Region of the Sisters of Notre Dame! We want to share various nuggets that together, reveal an awesome story. You will find a monthly review of various happenings, despite the unforeseen challenges of the pandemic.

As SNDs, we reflect on 2020 with deep reverence. After many years of planning, our four North American provinces were united as one province, SND USA, on July 5. We also want to take this opportunity to introduce our three new local leaders.

Mosaics are designed to be enduring expressions of the creative spirit. The stories of Maria Rullo Schinderle and Annabelle Gordon are just that, sharing the ripple effect and the long-term impact of the SND mission. What an honor it is to share these testimonials with you!

Most importantly, we wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to the hundreds of donors who added their own special beauty to our mosaic of 2020. Alone, we are as little stones, but together, we reveal the face of God to the world--his image of love and provident care. Thank you for embracing our mission and for helping to make our mosaic a grand image of resilience, courage and hope!

Blessings always,

A Ripple Effect Over The Generations

Dear Sr. Lisa,

I hope you and all the sisters are well and safe! Christmas brings many memories of our childhood in that little town of Bell, days at St. Rose of Lima, Notre Dame Academy and St. Matthias High School. My life, our lives, have been truly blessed by the dedication and mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame.

My husband, David, and I are making this donation in the name of our daughter, Meghan E. Clem, for her birthday. We want to direct this donation in her name to the schools, especially the high school, at St. Julie’s Mission in Uganda. Our daughter has spent her entire adult life empowering girls and young women to make the world a better place. She owns two businesses and employs women while offering internships to female college students. Ten years ago, she and her high school classmate (and now business partner) formed RAD Camp Inc. (Rising Above Disabilities) while operating their businesses. RAD Camp is a volunteer organization that provides residential camp experiences to adults and children with disabilities. It provides opportunities for hundreds of high school and college students to volunteer their time as counselors while providing individualized care to the beloved campers. Meghan is also a wife and mother of twin 6-year-old boys and a 2 1/2-year-old very independent little girl. Of course, we are so very proud of her!

“I am writing all of this because it is my true belief the Sisters of Notre Dame were instrumental in her empowerment and success because of all they did to educate and empower me.”

I passed on to my daughter the lessons, focus, encouragement, and example the SNDs instilled in me. Now she is passing it on! My gratitude is overwhelming for those amazing women who not only taught me, prayed for me, guided me, and showed me that my horizons were unlimited. (I thank God they, especially Sr. Joann Schlarbaum, never gave up on me.) We hope this small donation in Meghan’s name will serve to help offer the same opportunities to girls in Uganda.

Please know I pray daily for you and all the Sisters of Notre Dame that God will continue to abundantly bless your mission and ministries.

Best regards,

It was my parents who taught me about life values and attitudes. My mother’s deep faith and my father’s positive and adventuresome spirit had a lasting influence on me. I joined the SNDs with a desire to lead others to a deeper relationship with our compassionate God. As a SND, I’ve ministered to elementary students, parishioners, the bereaved, and to the hospitalized. It has been a privilege to accompany them, hopefully helping them see God present in their lives. Now I look forward to journeying with my sisters, as together we experience God in our lives, and in the lives of those entrusted to our care.

Sr. Judeen Julier, S.N.D. Southwest

I am Sr. Rebekah Kennedy, a member of the Leadership Team for SND USA. My parents and siblings were born in Ohio, but they moved to California just in time for the first native Californian Kennedy to be born. I have lived here ever since! My background and my passion are in education, having been a teacher and a principal for many of my 50 years of profession. My focus has broadened now in becoming familiar with our sisters’ many ministries across the United States. We are grateful for your support as the mission of Jesus continues through the hands and hearts of our sisters.

Sr. Rebekah Kennedy,

A mosaic window is made of many pieces of broken glass, and our lives can resemble mosaics in progress. In the former Toledo province, my past was spent as an elementary educator, a vocation and college campus minister, a parish minister and now service within my community. I’m not sure how many more pieces life will give me but the one piece that keeps being repeated is presence. I came to California to be a presence, to accept the pieces of SND USA that are now forming a new mosaic in our lives. I truly do look forward to meeting you!

Sr. Rita Marie Schroeder,

Thank You To Our Donors

We want to thank everyone who made a donation during 2020! Every contribution affirms your partnership with the SNDs in our lives of service as consecrated women religious. With grateful hearts, we pray that you are richly blessed for joining us in living and proclaiming the mission of Jesus Christ.

According to our Advancement Office records, an asterisk represents a donor whose first recorded gift was in 1995. Thank you for your loyalty over these 25 years!

Through The Wolbring Legacy Society

Born in Holland in 1828, Hilligonde Wolbring was orphaned at age 7 and taken to Germany to live with relatives. She became a teacher, deciding to use her inheritance to benefit poor and neglected children. Together with Elizabeth Kuhling, Hilligonde discerned that their desire to bring hope to the poor was a call to religious life, and so the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame was established in 1850.

Since 1924, the Sisters of Notre Dame have ministered in California. We are humbled by thousands of donors who have generously embraced our mission. Just as Hilligonde’s inheritance touched many lives, bequests from our partners in hope also have a lasting impact.

The Wolbring Legacy Society honors Hilligonde’s patrimony, a legacy of faith and compassion that existed beyond her lifetime. We are honored to share this testimonial from Annabelle Gordon, a member of the Wolbring Legacy Society.

As a cradle Catholic, my faith has instilled within me a deep appreciation for the human dignity of each person and the call to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. My association with the Sisters of Notre Dame has included many experiences which have reinforced these ideals. I have been blessed by a life of freedom to choose among many options. I am impelled to share my God-given gifts as an expression of my gratitude and stewardship. And so I want to leave a legacy that will touch the lives of future generations through the life and ministry of the Sisters of Notre Dame. With trust in God’s goodness and provident care, I have included the Sisters of Notre Dame as a beneficiary of my estate.

Membership in the Wolbring Legacy Society is offered to those individuals who include the Sisters of Notre Dame in their estate plans. The only requirement is a written confirmation of the donor’s intent to make a planned gift. Membership may remain anonymous if the donor so chooses. We would be honored to welcome you into the Wolbring Legacy Society, giving us the chance to thank you personally. Please be assured of our prayerful good wishes, now and always.
