MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dr. Michael Bates, President, NDCL/NDES Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?” -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The calm and beauty of our campus blanketed in snow before Christmas and these past weeks serve as daily reminder of God’s call to reflect upon our world and our many efforts to contribute unselfishly for the common good in deed and in truth. This year as we mark the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination, there remains much for our country and world to consider. Rooted in faith, hope, and love, the call of the Gospels beckons us to care for our neighbor, for the sick, for the downtrodden. This is a difficult and, at times, challenging call. We are rooted in a faith that recognizes God’s grace as the transformative and intrinsic strength to enable us to move forward in mind and action to create and sustain community. For us at Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, our community continues to thrive as we “educate leaders who transform the world, as Jesus did, by living the truth in love.”

On a daily basis, our faculty and staff witness to the giftedness of our students in the classroom, on the courts, on retreats, in service, and on stage. The vision and mission of our school to educate leaders is one rooted in hopefulness and with an orientation to fostering moral courage in our young adults to tackle the many and varied challenges of our time and of our future. In this edition of Seasons, we profile just a few of our many, many talented students and alums. These are young people who have shared their God-given talents to change the world near and far away. They are scholars, artists, athletes, performers – young people emboldened with hope, skill, courage, self-awareness, and unbridled capacity for good. May their stories inspire you and help you realize the breadth of talent our student body and alumni community possess. As we conclude 2017, we also honor the many alumni of our school who passed away this year. I ask you to hold in thought and prayer our community and, particularly, the families and friends of those we have lost. May their legacy be a reminder to us of our capacity to love more and to extend our care more readily. on Snow. Cersei Lannister. Daenerys Targaryen. Arya Stark. These names will mean nothing to you unless you are one of the millions of viewers of HBO’s smash hit, Game of Thrones. Behind the scenes, serving as digital content creator and strategist for one of the biggest hits in cable history, is NDCL’s own Katie Lucas `04. In her coveted position at HBO, Lucas provides constant online updates, videos and summaries to help fans navigate the complicated intricacies of characters. Through an official Game of Thrones website, blog, newsletter and social media posts, the former Lion continues to whet fans’ appetites. For those not familiar with this epic series, Game of Thrones is a medieval fantasy that depicts the struggle between two powerful families, kings, queens, knights, renegades and basic good and evil. Complete with dragons, white walkers (deceased who come back to life), wizardry and gruesome deaths, “Game of Thrones fans simply cannot get enough,” says Lucas. continued on page 4

Upon graduating from NDCL, Lucas earned a B.A. in English, with a focus on contemporary literature and minors in communications and business, from The Ohio State University. She landed a job at the NBC Page Program in New York when the program came to recruit at the OSU Columbus campus. “If you’ve seen 30 Rock, you know Kenneth the Page. His character is a parody of the role but not a totally inaccurate portrayal of the gig,” laughs Lucas. “It’s a rotational program for recent graduates where you apply, interview, and move through different positions within different departments. In this way, you can tailor the program to your interests and explore different sides of the industry. My rotations included jobs as a production assistant on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and talent assistant on Saturday Night Live and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. When you’re not on assignment, you’re giving tours of the NBC studios.” 4
In addition to Game of Thrones, Lucas also works on Westworld and Insecure. In the past, she worked on True Detective, The Leftovers, True Blood and Silicon Valley. Lucas reflects on how she landed such an enviable position immediately out of college: “Overall, my internship experience is what made me an attractive candidate; I had completed four unpaid media internships in college, which showed my work ethic and passion for media.” Lucas is currently the Senior Content Manager within HBO’s Digital & Social Media Department. There, she manages the creative for any digital initiatives related to HBO programming, which often means working on show-specific marketing campaigns. “My job includes everything from creatively producing video series (the most common being “Inside the Episode”); conducting interviews with cast, directors,

“My biggest challenge today is balancing the demands of my job with my personal life,” Lucas describes. “The hours, stress and workload are difficult. I spend a lot of time and money to make sure I take care of myself – physically and mentally. Burnout is a real problem in this industry. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve made it a priority to actively work against this.” crew and/or writers; managing the website and blogs; and helping with emerging technology, like virtual reality experiences or chatbots,” Lucas describes. “The strategist part of my job is determining which message to say to which user. Our marketing is most effective when we’re serving our audiences with customized content.” Lucas acknowledges it is a lot of fun working on Game of Thrones. “I like that I can talk about my job with nearly anyone. Many people have seen my work, which is very validating and cool. However, it can also be stressful because I read the scripts and watch episodes long before they air, but I cannot talk about what is coming up at all. Obviously, there is a certain amount of internal ‘freaking out’ that I have to keep information to myself until the show premieres,” she admits. Reflecting back to her days at NDCL, Katie acknowledges that she never considered TV or entertainment as career options. “For current NDCL students who share a similar career goal, my advice is everything you need is already at your fingertips. If you want to write, write. If you want to work in social media, get active in social media. Look for internships; it’s a great way to try out a type of work. Also, don’t stress too much. You have plenty of time to figure things out.”

Looking toward her future, Lucas states, “I’ve never had a linear plan for my career, partially because this industry is constantly evolving. My role at HBO has changed dramatically in ways I could never have predicted since I started here three years ago. It’s important to stay open to new potential opportunities. That said, I would like to be a creative director somewhere. I’ve definitely considered transitioning away from TV into technology, but my main priority is to work for a brand that I believe in, that has values I can stand behind.” “As far as rewards go,” she continues, “I’ve gotten some major perks. I have an Emmy statue in my home; I’ve been to the Creative Arts Emmys twice. I spent a month in Belfast this past year working on the Game of Thrones set. I’ve met and had fascinating conversations with people I idolize. However, probably most importantly, I feel very lucky to have a creative job that values good ideas where I feel intellectually challenged.”

Empowering Dreams, Developing Talents NDCL’s Board of Directors, administration, faculty and staff engage in one mission: to educate leaders for the transformation of our world. At NDCL, this is done by empowering dreams and assisting our students in discovering and developing their gifts and talents. Not surprising, students continue to respond with impressive achievements on campus as well as within their parishes, communities and work-study experiences. Meet four students -- Maddy Wanke, Tim Cermak, Hailey Oppenlander and Charlie Toman – who have already encountered some amazing experiences since arriving on campus.

Creative MADELYN WANKE `19
Vocalist extraordinaire. Madelyn “Maddy” Wanke recently took first place in the CLE Shining Star competition, winning a $10,000 college scholarship and the opportunity to perform with Cleveland Pops Orchestra at Severance Hall. All high school students in grade 9 through 12 in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Medina and Summit counties were eligible. Four auditions weeded the tough competition.
Of course, Maddy worked hard before ever taking center stage at Playhouse Square. “I have enjoyed music since I was very young. Honestly, I was a terrible singer back then but loved singing,” she insists selfdeprecatingly. “At age 10, I began taking vocal lessons. My voice instructor taught me the basics up until eighth grade. But then, I experienced a rough patch in my life. I began to struggle with depression. I had very little self-esteem and horrible social anxiety. I was insecure talking to people and would not even raise my hand in class. I thought no one cared about what I had to say.”

“Today, I advocate for others struggling with depression,” she courageously shares. “The biggest goal in pursuing any art is being able to touch people in a way words cannot. Music allows me to do that. The greatest way I can show an emotion is vocally.”
“NDCL provides students with the freedom to explore yourself – your dreams and talents,” Maddy says. “I took choir my freshman year, and my teacher, Mr. (Adam) Pysell `05, was amazingly encouraging. He gave me solos and built my confidence in very uncomfortable situations. Mr. Pysell knew how important music was to me.”
“Likewise, Ms. Shirley Ivancic Stall helped me through acting freshman year; she gave me one of the lead roles in a play. I am not very good at expressing emotions and that experience helped me come to terms with my emotions in real life,” she recalls. “If a student seeks a creative career, they will definitely find support at NDCL. Still, students must be brave to take the first step and sign up for choir or theater auditions or explore areas where they have interests,” she encourages. She was asked by school administrators to record The National Anthem, and her rendition continues to be played at several NDCL sporting events. Today, Maddy has a lot going on with music outside of NDCL. She is a member of Cleveland’s School of Rock, a haven for aspiring musicians who love rock ‘n roll. She is one of the lead singers in the School of Rock’s elite band, “Headliners,” directed by Tommy Rich. She is also learning how to play guitar/bass guitar. She and fellow members perform live shows and often open for bigger bands. Maddy’s favorite performance venues include Cain Park, Playhouse Square, Severance Hall, Nighttown, and Progressive Field. She regularly performs at restaurants in Cleveland throughout the summer. In 2012, Maddie recorded “I’ll Be There” with Allan Licht on the album, “Finally Found” and her own album, “Maddy” in 2014. Many of the singles can be heard on iTunes.

TIM CERMAK `18 Joyful spirituality. These words best describe Tim Cermak, who shares his faith as comfortably as one takes a breath. Tim is extremely involved in campus ministry at NDCL. He helped to initiate Eucharistic Adoration during study halls on Thursdays. “It is really awesome. We are getting more and more people attending each week,” describes Tim excitedly. “Students, teachers, other staff on campus are all invited to attend this time of prayer, reconciliation and praise for everything God is doing in our lives.” “It is all about spreading God’s love and helping others see God as He truly is,” Tim explains. Attending a LifeTeen Retreat, sponsored by St Helen parish, proved the turning point in his faith. “My brother John `16 coaxed me into attending. After this retreat, I really grew in my faith and prayer,” Tim says. “I also attended the KAIROS retreat at NDCL in the spring of my junior year. KAIROS means ‘God’s time.’ This fall, I am one of 10 student

team leaders. This retreat is really awesome and impactful. Because of it, students are changed.” “Students are soaking in the love of God and diving deeper,” Tim describes life on NDCL’s campus. “They could be doing homework or eating during study hall but instead, they are choosing to spend it with Jesus. It is impacting me.” “I have come to see NDCL as an extension of my family. They build me up and bring me closer to God and where I need to go. It is such a faith-filled community. The teachers care about us and help us see our dreams and talents. Tim plans to attend either University of Dayton for engineering or Franciscan University for Theology. “I am open to wherever God calls me to serve,” he says.
Academics HAILEY OPPENLANDER `18
National merit semifinalist. Hailey Oppenlander was one of 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools across the United States entered in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. An initial screening to the program is determined by scores on the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). A semifinalist must also have an outstanding academic record, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. Check this off of your to-do list, Hailey! As an NDCL student, Hailey has challenged herself academically, taking AP classes in world history, literature, and statistics as well as College Credit Plus courses in calculus, AP physics, and “Rebels with a Cause.”

“I love this class because it includes different philosophies, protest music, Gandhi, and more,” describes Hailey enthusiastically. Beth Walsh-Moorman, English Department Chair and Literacy Specialist, teaches this course. “The teachers at NDCL are caring and really want to help students find their interests,” Hailey explains. “I do study and put forth a lot of effort into academics, but I also really enjoy what I am learning.” Excellent academic scores, including a 4.5 GPA, are not all on this young woman’s resume. Hailey actively pursues other interests. She is a member of Chardon Dance and serves as captain of the NDCL Dance Team as both a junior and senior. She also engages in volunteer and career opportunities. She volunteered at Cleveland Catholic Charities and taught a Self-Sufficiency class to mostly middle-aged refugees from central Asia, the Middle East and Africa about American culture, time, money, and practical language and vocabulary. Hailey also explores career opportunities. One interest is writing. “It made sense for me to contact the Geauga County Public Library in Chardon this summer for an internship because I spend so much time there anyway,” she explains. Assigned to the Marketing Department at GCPL Administration Center, Hailey wrote and edited for print and online submissions. “NDCL offers a lot of opportunities for students to pursue their interests,” Hailey states. “Since I have so many passions, this school was a perfect fit. My deep faith inspires me in all areas of my life.” Hailey is hoping to be accepted to the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, where she plans to enroll in their first-year studies program. continued on page 10

CHARLIE TOMAN `18 Two-time state champion. At two years old, most toddlers are just getting the hang of walking and talking. Not Charlie Toman `18. He was already picking up clubs and working on his golf swing! The two-time Division II OHSAA State Champion (2014 and 2017) concluded his senior golf career at NDCL with a two-day total of 137 — 7 under par — to take home medalist honors in the Division II state golf tournament at NorthStar Golf Club in Sunbury. It was also the second year in a row NDCL’s Boys Varsity Golf Team came in second place as a team at State. Joining Toman on the awards podium for second-place were Arya Achar `19, Daniel Milo `20, Aditya Achar `20 and Jakob Flynn `19. “As captain of the team, I knew I had to lead by example. During the school year, I typically practiced four hours a day, and during the summer I would practice from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Quail Hollow. My NDCL teammates are my best friends. The five of us practiced together; they were very supportive, pushing me all the way as I competed at the AJGA championship tournament,” Charlie says with a wide grin. “I was getting messages on my phone from them, saying ‘He’s leading’, ‘Double Eagle!’, ‘Go Toman!’, He’s unstoppable.’” Toman recently accepted a full athletic/academic scholarship to play golf at Valparaiso University next fall.

“This year was a tremendous year for me in competition,” exclaims Charlie. “I won the AJGA (American Junior Golf Association) Championship Tournament. You have to qualify to compete. I had exempt status due to past performances in competition.” AJGA is considered by many leaders in the golf industry to be the premier junior golf association of the world. Junior golfers between the ages of 12 and 19 are eligible to play in AJGA events, and members come from the United States and more than 55 countries. AJGA alumni on the PGA tour include renowned golfers Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods among many others. While Charlie has never had a hole-in-one, he did have a double eagle and two rounds of 64 this year. “I won nine tournaments this year, and I play all around the nation – primarily on the east coast. I will try to qualify for the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur. Right now, I am ranked 143, but at the beginning of the year I was ranked under 100. My goal is to drop to below 25,” Charlie says of his dream. “I’d also like to make the Junior Ryder Cup Team next year.” “Coming to NDCL gave me many opportunities,” considers Charlie. “Our high school team dominated in sectionals and districts, winning by over 30 strokes. We also set a school record with a combined score of 292. I’m very proud of what we accomplished as a team.”

Lions Join Bishop Nelson Perez in March for Life While most teens are involved in a myriad of activities each fall, NDCL students joined representatives from all 20 high schools in the diocese for the Annual Mass and March for Life at Saint John Cathedral in October. Following the Mass, the group marched with Bishop Nelson Perez to Public Square, where many participants shared stories of the sacredness of all life.

NDCL Launches Certified Peer Educator Program Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin has become the first high school in Ohio to partner with Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) to offer our students nationally recognized Certified Peer Educator (CPE) training and credentialing. The Certified Peer Educator program provides foundational-level skills to empower students as stronger leaders, better role models, more effective advocates, and more productive team members. The program’s learning modules include extremely relevant content and specific real-world skills. The CPE experience gives students the confidence to believe in themselves and the power of influence they have on others.

“Earning the nationally recognized CPE credential should set our students apart as influential leaders who are determined to make a positive difference on our campus now and on scores of college campuses in the very near future,” Principal Mr. Joseph A. Waler explained. “I think this program fits perfectly with our mission to educate leaders to transform the world.” Facilitators from NASPA’s Colorado headquarters will travel to Chardon to present the 12-hour program on February 15-16, 2017. The initial training will be open to juniors selected through an application process.

Research studies of Alexis Hammer `18 and Michelle King `18 are among the sophisticated internship projects featured on the Cleveland Clinic’s myRESEARCH website. Alexis and Michelle landed paid summer internships with the Clinic after succeeding in a highly competitive process that included a written application and personal interview with Clinic professionals. In recent years, NDCL students have won 30 internship appointments at the
Clinic—more than any other Catholic high school in the Clinic’s market area. Through their experiences working alongside worldrenowned caregivers in these programs, students connect with healthcare fields and careers, develop their 21st century skill-set through hands-on learning opportunities, and discover real-world applications for their academic knowledge.

Cleveland Clinic Features Internship Research of NDCL Seniors
Seniors Earn National Merit Recognition Based upon their outstanding performance on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) last October, seniors Hailey Oppenlander, Gregory Owendoff, and Lillian Martin have earned national recognition from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Hailey has been named a National Merit SemiFinalist—a distinction earned by less than 1% of all high school seniors in the United States. She will now compete for finalist status in the National Merit

Program. Finalists are eligible for scholarships sponsored by the National Merit Program as well as by businesses and colleges throughout the country. Gregory and Lillian have been named Commended Students. They scored among the top 3% of more than 1.6 million students nationwide who took the PSAT. Their elite academic status positions them well for college admission and scholarships offered by individual universities.

Nora Nelson `18: Golfer of the Year Nora Nelson `18, named News Herald’s Golfer of the Year, had an extremely strong senior season, just missing the Division I state tournament after tying for fourth in district competition. She carded a 74 at districts—a score she shot several times this season. Nora’s achievements included a second-place finish in the North Coast League tournament. Her score of 78 helped propel the Lions to the league championship. Nora, who has yet made her college decision, may vie for a walk-on position on the golf team.

Charlie Toman `18 Wins 2nd State Golf Championship as the Team Grabs Runner-up Finish Senior Charlie Toman ended his high school golf career the way he began it three years ago: by winning the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Division II State Golf Championship. Charlie, who won the 2014 state championship as a freshman, led the Lions to their second consecutive runnerup state tournament finish with a record-setting 137 at NorthStar Golf Club in Sunbury. His score of 66 on Friday also set a new first-round state record at the NorthStar course. The entire NDCL team also set a state tournament record at NorthStar with a combined score of 297.

After winning the Spartan Invitational, NDCL’s boys cross country team celebrates:
NDCL’s boys cross country team secured a bid for the state championship meet on November 4, 2017 at National Trail Raceway. The team finished in 11th place out of 20 teams. In a field of hundreds of runners, notable individual results include Augie King (48th place): David Beebe (50th place); Cal Yackin (57th place); Harmond Richardson (63rd place); Donny Gatto (72nd place); Brian Tuohey (118th place); Tommy Shero (126th place).
Lions Charge Through the Fall Season In addition to our state contending teams, the Lion’s had a stellar fall season. The Lion football team qualified for the OHSAA Playoffs in 2017, advancing to the Regional Semifinal in Division III. Earning All-Ohio honors are: First Team - Gabe Brkic `18 (kicker), Aidan MacDonald `18 (O-line), Manni Malone `18 (D-line); Third team - Josh Peroni `18 and Zach Urda `19. The NDCL girls volleyball team finished 15-10 overall and advanced to the OHSAA Div. II District Championship game. Middle hitter Sally Sterkel `18, committed to play at Edinboro University next fall, was named honorable mention all-Ohio.
The NDCL girls soccer team finished 9-8-1 overall after falling to top-seeded Mayfield 3-2 in double overtime in the OHSAA Division I District Semifinal. Mary Malone `18 was named first team all-North Coast League, first-team News-Herald All Star and first-team Division I All Greater Cleveland. The Lions boys soccer team finished 7-8-2. Head Coach Marco DiFranco was named the North Coast League Coach of the year while Trent Dlugos earned first-team all-league honors. The Lions girls tennis team captured the North Coast League Tournament for the first time since 2000, besting Walsh Jesuit by a point. First doubles of Lexi Hammer and Antonia Mysyk along with second doubles of Sarah Harlan and Molly Lee both took NCL titles.

Breakfast with Santa Santa and Mrs. Claus made a special visit to the NDCL campus on Saturday, December 16 for the third annual Breakfast with Santa. This popular event occurred over two sessions and drew more than 170 guests including alumni, parents of alumni, their children, and friends. All enjoyed a delicious breakfast. Families took photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus (Rusty and June (Folk `74) Seech), the NDCL Charity Choir led the groups in the singing of Christmas carols, Mrs. Claus read “’Twas the Night before Christmas” poem, and children created festive snowman ornaments at the craft table.

3-on-3 Basketball Tournament for NDCL Alumni and Friends On Sunday, December 17, 22 alumni and 12 friends took to the McGarry Gym to participate in the annual 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament for NDCL Alumni and Friends. The eight team, double elimination tournament featured two, 10-minute halves played in the half-court setting. This year’s champions, Team ‘Where is Funk?,’ was composed of Pete DeMichele, Mark Worthington `12, Brendan Leininger `16, and Kendall Miller `16. Congratulations to all our teams!

NDCL Alumni Association Fall Service Day NDCL alumni stepped up to serve at the Hospice of the Western Reserve’s David Simpson home on Saturday, October 28. The NDCL Alumni Association, a group of alumni dedicated to continuing the mission of Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School through service and alumni engagement, organized the annual service day.
The volunteers spent their morning preparing for a memorial service and cleaning the Hospice halls, family kitchen, and dining room. “At NDCL, we were taught to go out and transform the world. This service day was just one way we can give back to our local community,” says Christian Brandetsas `12. Sarah (Sankovich) Pascual began her fifth year as an art educator. She is now teaching at Switzerland Point Middle School in St. Johns County, the number one school district in the state of Florida. Sarah’s background in both visual and performing arts, as well as the sciences, allows her to serve as the educational link between the Art, Drama, Technology, and Science departments.
