Author Seeks Information on Local WWII Vets ESCALANTE - Robert Proctor, author of The History of Panguitch, will be in Escalante during this week's Veteran's Day Celebration being held on November 11, 2014, to gather material for his Garfield County WWII Biographical Encyclopedia. Proctor says he has a list of names of people, male and female, from Antimony, Boulder, Cannonville, Escalante, Henrieville and Tropic who he is researching for his book, and he has many questions concerning these individuals. Among the items he is looking to find are personal remembrances, letters written home, lists of awards received and copies of discharge paperwork. The discharge paperwork helps provide the enlistment dates, theaters of war, dates overseas, units served, and discharge dates and awards. All of these help provide a clearer picture of what the veteran dealt with during the war. "I hope my efforts in assembling this material will ensure that the sacrifices of America's 'Greatest Generation' will be available for members of future generations, enabling them to better appreciate the hardships their ancestors dealt with," says Proctor. He has also recently completed an index to the classic history Golden Nuggets of WWII Vets

Ramsay Honored for 20 Years of Service
Kathy Gardner
Mr. and Mrs. Dale Brinkerhoff of Iron County join retiring Washington County Commissioner Jim Eardley and retiring Garfield County Commissioner Clare Ramsay, who are each holding plaques received in recognition of their service by the Five County Association of Governments. BRYCE - Last Thursday night, retiring Garfield County Commissioner Clare Ramsay was honored for his twenty years of service as a commissioner during a dinner sponsored by the Five County Association of Governments, held at Ruby’s Inn. Retiring 16-year Washington County commissioner Jim Eardley was also honored at the event. Bryan Thiriot, Executive Director of Five Counties, said the idea for the fête came from Iron County Commissioner Dale Brinkerhoff, who felt the retiring commissioners deserved recognition for their many years of service. In all, 13 commissioners and their spouses from throughout the five county area (Beaver, Iron,
Washington, Garfield and Kane counties), came for the dinner, with only two commissioners representing the region unable to attend. Thiriot noted of Ramsay, “I’ve found Clare to be extremely dedicated to representing Garfield County and Garfield County’s interests in public lands and also in representing the interests of greater southwest Utah. He’s also been a strong advocate for rural health care and of the aging and senior services programs that we administer,” he said. Serving five terms as Garfield County Commissioner has been Ramsay’s second full-fledged career, with his first being a teacher and coach at Bryce Valley High School for thirty years. Raised

on a ranch in Glendale (Kane County), Ramsay graduated from Valley High School in Orderville and then served in the Korean War. After the war he attended Southern Utah University and then Brigham Young University, majoring in physical education and history. He then came back to the area, settling in Tropic to teach. After retiring from teaching, Ramsay says he drove truck for a while, and it was during this time that he considered running for county commissioner. “I was working for Kaibab Lumber Company in Panguitch and had just come home and parked my truck for the night, and my neighbor and I got to talking and he says, ‘Why don’t you consider running for that commissioner seat that’s coming up?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know anything about it why don’t you do it?’ And he said, ‘I’m too old.’” Ramsay Honored Cont'd on page 3
