Special Stage Presentations Bring Historic Events to Life
GRAND STAIRCASEESCALANTE - N.M. - The Bureau of Land Management and US Forest Service invite you to two special stage presentations in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act. On Saturday September 20, 2014, join us for “The Tramp and the Roughrider”, a delightful illumination of an historic conversation between Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir in May 1903, when President Roosevelt invited the naturalist Muir on a four-day
camping trip in the Yosemite Wilderness. Speaking as John Muir, Lee Stetson matches wits and wit with Alan Sutterfield as President Teddy Roosevelt. At the time of this historic meeting, the federal government had only established five national parks, one small wildlife preserve, and the western forests had little or no oversight. Both characters were feisty and opinionated, with sharp disagreements on issues like hunting, animal rights, and forest management. Both

Muir and Roosevelt were skillful storytellers, determined to top each other by relating their many adventures in America’s wilderness. Around the campfire, shifting through their histories and hopes, these two very different men discovered how they had been shaped by the wilderness they loved, opening the possibilities of “doing some forest good”. ESCALANTE - Landscape painter Dennis Farris knew from an early age that he wanted to be an artist, and as this year’s Escalante Canyons Art Festival artist-in-residence, festival-goers will be in for a treat if they visit the exhibit of what he’s been working on during his stay in the area. Farris’ life-long dedication to perfecting his craft is palpable in his work, whether it is a small “a la prima” piece, as he calls it, where he quickly captures the form, tone and color of a landscape, or a more detailed
production that is the result of multiple trips to a particular location, involving longer-term study of the site. Either way, for the viewer, the response is likely to be a delighted “Ooooooh.” Though of an apparently modest temperament, Farris seems to enjoy his own work as well, and as he pulled a few recently-painted items out of his travel trailer to look at, he noted his current favorite, a painting of the big notch in the Escalante monocline that can be seen from the top of town.
Farris is staying at the Canyons of Escalante RV Park in the middle of town on Main Street and finds that he doesn’t have to go far, if anywhere at all, to find something that captures his attention. He gestured toward the monocline. “I like just sitting here and watching the way the light rolls off that rock over there, the way the sun hits it.” With that alone, he says, he has plenty to work with. “Today I was painting the clouds above it,” he said. ESCALANTE - Escalante Canyons Art Festival-Everett Ruess Days celebrates the wild beauty of Escalante this year in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act. Named for the spirit of poet, artist, and adventurer, Everett Ruess, who disappeared into the remote

Sid Goodloe of Carrizo Valley Ranch, New Mexico with herd on rangeland. Goodloe will speak both Wednesday evening and Friday morning during the Escalante Canyons Art Festival.
In 1956, Sid Goodloe, a young West Texan, purchased the 3,450-acre Carrizo Valley Ranch, near Capitan, New Mexico. Although the purchase price was reasonable, the land was in poor condition. There were only two viable options that Sid considered, “improve the ranch or starve.” Sid began his long, trial-by-error journey to restore the Carrizo Valley Ranch back to its pre-settlement condition. Unbeknownst to Sid Goodloe, his restoration efforts embody the spirit and vision of Aldo Leopold, who was the famous conservation author of Sand County Almanac. brunch on Sunday, September 28th, but a full week of festivities leads up to the finale weekend. Artists spread throughout the lonely canyons and perch on high vistas of the Escalante desert landscape to begin painting a week prior to the art exhibit. The plein air competition welcomes artists of any age, experience, and ability. Cash prizes totaling more than $8,000 are awarded. A highlight of this year’s festival includes a “walk and talk” around the art exhibit at 9 a.m. on Saturday, when the plein air judges will discuss judging criteria and the selection process. “Green Fire,” a fulllength film about early environmentalist Aldo Leopold, kicks off a week of activity on Monday, September 22nd. The speaker series begins on Tuesday with a special tribute to the Wilderness Act through Lee Stetson’s one-person show based on the life of naturalist, John Muir, followed on Wednesday by lifetime rancher Sid Goodloe, who will share his journey to restore his 3,450-acre New Mexico ranch back to health through conservation-based ranching. This year’s paint out, an exciting one-day painting competition held on Wednesday, September 24th, will take place along the magnificent Hell’s Backbone Loop that travels from Escalante through Art Festival
