Get Ready for This Year's "Preparedness" Fair

GARFIELD & WAYNE CO. - The day starts out like any other. The alarm goes off and before long, the whole household is up and going. Perhaps your day includes getting kids off to school, getting a spouse out the door for work before you head out yourself. Maybe you have young children at home with you, perhaps even the neighbor’s children that you are watching for the day. Whatever your day normally includes, take just a moment and imagine this scenario: Mid morning of a typical day, you suddenly start to feel a tremble under your feet. This tremble grows stronger and stronger until soon everything is shaking. You are tossed to and fro while trying to keep an eye out for furniture that is also being thrown about the room. (Are you in an office or a room of your home where you have to worry about things falling from bookcases?) The room seems to bounce things around for what seems like forever before the tremors begin to taper off. Are you hurt? Can you help others or do you need help? What about your children? Do the ones at home with you know what to do? What about the ones at school? If you have children in multiple schools—perhaps you have them in elementary, middle and high schools— where do you go first, if you are even able to go get them? If your spouse left town today for work or shopping, can you

reach them? If phone lines are down or overloaded with calls, do you have a plan in place to turn to? If you can get all of your family members home tonight, will your house be a safe place for you to sleep? Do you have an alternative? Will you have water? Will you be able to cook meals? If this took place in the winter time, do you have adequate heat sources? What about lighting?

Fault lines run through Garfield County and we have heard for years that “it’s not if, but when the Big One hits”. The questions you should be asking right now are “If it happened today, would my family and I be ready?” “Will my neighbors?” Garfield and Piute Counties will have a Preparedness Fair held Saturday Septem-

Pictured left to right are Wes Curtis, Executive Director SUU, Carl Albrecht, and Lt. Governor Spencer Cox. LOA - Rural Utah has produced many outstanding leaders over the years, but few have been able to combine business leadership with community service as well as Carl Albrecht. In fact, when it comes to Carl, it’s hard to tell where his community service ends and business interests begin because one just flows naturally into the other. Whether it’s installing a power line or serving on the City Council, it’s all part of Carl’s lifelong desire to serve rural communities and rural residents in every way he can. Born in Salina, Utah, and raised in Bicknell, Utah, Carl

has been looked to from an early age as a natural leader. He was student body president of Wayne High School and two years later was elected student body president of StevensHenager College. As time progressed, Carl was also elected to serve on the Richfield City Council and on the Sevier District School Board. Carl worked for Garkane Energy for 40 years, serving 22 of those years as Garkane’s Chief Executive Officer. Under his leadership, Garkane Energy has seen the number of customers grow from a few thousand, to 16,000 customers across six Utah counties, and two counties

REGIONAL Weather forecast for some but not all regions represented in our newspaper coverage area

in Arizona. Through it all, Carl has made sure that Garkane is an engaged and contributing community citizen. One of the company’s core principles is to “work for sustainable development of the Cooperative’s communities.” It’s a principle that Carl has taken to heart. Carl has served with numerous community organizations and on many executive boards, including the Sevier County Jeep Posse, Chair of the Sevier Valley Applied Technology Center Board, the Snow College Board of Trustees, and Chair of the Snow Richfield Advisory Committee. Over 90 percent of Garkane’s service area is comprised of federal lands. Because of this, Carl has developed a particular expertise in public lands issues and in working with numerous stakeholders to solve difficult public lands challenges. TORREY - The first Utah Classical Guitar Society summer concert in Wayne County played to a standing room only audience last Friday evening. Almost 60 people filled the DUP Schoolhouse in Torrey to hear Jon Paul Yerby perform the work of composers spanning more than 200 years. "Jon Yerby's instrumentation combined with the superb acoustics of the schoolhouse, made for a wonderful evening," said former Torrey mayor, Adus Dorsey. "It's great to open the building again to acoustic instruments. I look forward to the 2015 Utah Classical Guitar Society series." Yerby heads the Utah Classical Guitar Society and the Utah Valley University classical guitar department. The Society's mission is to share the beauty and culture of classical guitar with a broad Utah audience. The Society plans to continue the series with three summer concerts in 2015. Performing artists will be announced in the spring. The Society will be forming a local organizing committee to plan and manage the series.
