Boating Safety Urged on Lake Powell After Two Serious Accidents PAGE, ARIZ. - After two serious recent watercraft accidents, one of them fatal, Visitor and Resource Protection rangers at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area are urging boaters to pay closer attention to safety on the water. On Thursday, July 28, two personal watercraft collided in Iceberg Canyon on Lake Powell. One of the riders, a 23-year-old man from Denver, CO, died in the ac-

cident. Rangers dispatched to the scene found the man’s 15-year-old brother, who had been operating the other personal watercraft in the crash, in serious condition. He was flown by air ambulance to a hospital in Grand Junction, CO. After treatment there, the teen was released the next day. The accident is under investigation by the San Juan County Sherriff’s Office and the National Park Service. On Sunday, July 24 at

So when over 300 music lovers showed up and were treated to a line-up that included Gearl Jam Reunion, Lost by Reason, Sister Wives, and the Zari Le’on Dance Theater, they knew that Women’s Redrock Music Festival was indeed something special. But they like others had to see it to believe it. Carol, Jeri and Laurie remember looking at each other on that Saturday night in

less to say, she was astonished by the quality of the music and the beauty of the venue. Some of the townspeople of Torrey didn’t know what to make of the crowds and wondered if their little town was the right venue. But just like most relationships, the more the town got to see and interact with the festival goers, the more it appreciated what WRMF meant for the town. Now, in 2016 for the 10th Annual Women’s Redrock Music Festival (12-13 August),

cals volunteer at the festival, several are vendors, and even more attend just to hear the music. Carol Gnade—the festival was her brainchild in 2007—loves music, loves the red rocks of Torrey, and loves making things happen. Through hard work and tireless fund raising, she and her team have grown the festival to one that is a favorite of performers and attendees. Carol Music Festival Cont'd on page 2

ESCALANTE - Stage Two of the seven stage Tour of Utah—shown above just moments before the start of the race—started in Escalante on Tuesday, August 2, and ended 99 miles later in Torrey following a climb to 9,435 ft over Boulder Mountain. U.S. rider Robin Carpenter won Stage Two with a time of 3:56:48, with just a 6 second gap between second place, Ruben Companioni, from Cuba. Third place was taken by another U.S. rider, Travis McCabe. The Tour of Utah's overall winner was 24 year old Lachlan David Morton, an Australian cyclist. He rode with team Jelly BellyMaxxis which is registered in the U.S., as a UCI Continental Team. That's right—your favorite jelly bean company, Jelly Belly, is the title sponsor, and a Taiwanese tire company is the presenting sponsor of this team. Morton also took home 1st place in the Tour of the Gila earlier this year. The second and third places overall for the Tour of Utah went to two Americans, Adrien Costa and Andrew Tanaksy, respectively. Both Torrey and Escalante took their hosting duties seriously. Each of the participating towns had community events with music and food, then showed up in force to cheer on the racers and their support teams. —Insider
