Agriculture Secretary Vilsack Proclaims August 7-13 "National Farmers Market Week"

WASHINGTON, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has signed a proclamation declaring Aug. 7-13, 2016, as "National Farmers Market Week." This year marks the 17th annual National Farmers Market Week to honor and celebrate the important role that farmers markets play in local economies. "Farmers markets are an important part of strong local

Some elk hunting changes await Utah's hunters this fall. The changes mostly involve the hunting of cow elk. If you enjoy hunting elk in Utah, some changes—including a new hunting opportunity—are waiting for you this fall. The changes mostly involve the hunting of female elk, also called cow elk. Antlerless elk-control permits • Antlerless elk-control permits are no longer available for most of Utah’s general spike only elk hunting units. That includes three of the state’s most popular units: the two Wasatch units in north-central Utah and the Mount Dutton unit in southcentral Utah. (Antlerless elk-control permits allow hunters, who already have a buck deer, bull elk or once-in-a-lifetime permit for a particular unit, to also take a cow elk on the unit during their hunt.) • If you buy a general spike bull permit and an antlerless-elk control permit, the northern portion of the San Juan unit (in southeastern Utah) is the only place you can take a cow elk. Antlerless elk-control permits are no longer available for any of the remaining spike-only units in Utah. If you have a general spike bull elk permit—and you’d like to buy an antlerless elk-control permit for the portion of the San Juan unit that’s

open to cow elk hunting—you must buy your elk control permit at a Division of Wildlife Resources office. The permits are not available over the Internet or from license agents. You can see the area on the San Juan unit where you can use the permit at www. wildlife.utah.gov/hunting/biggame/pdf/antlerless_control_ spike_elk.pdf. You can learn more about antlerless elk-control permits, including the 11 areas where you can use them, at www. wildlife.utah.gov/elkcontrol. Private-lands-only permits • Private-lands-only permits are new in Utah. Pushing elk off private property, and back onto public land, is the goal of the new permit. Pushing elk onto public land should make hunting on public land better in the future. Taking cow elk that are pushed onto public land is also important in getting Utah’s elk population back to the level called for in the state’s elk management plans. Justin Shannon, big game coordinator for the DWR, says as soon as the hunts start, many cow elk leave public land and head for private property. “We need to ‘retrain’ elk to stay on public land by limiting the refuge areas they have on private

property,” he says. “Providing private landowners with additional tools, to help control elk on their property, is the key to making that happen.” • Private-lands-only permits are available for 15 units in Utah. A list of the units is available at www.wildlife. utah.gov/private-lands-elk. html. When you buy a privatelands-only permit, you may use the permit only on the unit you bought the permit for. Also, if you’d like to hunt on private property that’s cultivated land, land that’s fenced or enclosed in a manner designed to exclude intruders from entering, or land that’s properly posted against trespass, you must obtain written permission from the landowner first. “Before you buy one of these permits,” says Judi Tutorow, wildlife licensing coordinator for the DWR, “obtain written permission to hunt on the private property you want to hunt. You don’t want to end up with a permit you can’t use.” You can learn more about private-lands-only permits at www.wildlife.utah.gov/private-lands-elk.html. If you have questions about cow elk hunting permits in Utah, call the nearest Division of Wildlife Resources office or the DWR’s Salt Lake City office at 801-538-4700. —Utah Division of Wildlife Resources

and regional food systems that connect farmers with new customers and grow rural economies. In many areas, they are also expanding access to fresh, healthy food for people of all income levels," said Secretary Vilsack. "National Farmers Market Week recognizes the growth of these markets and their role in supporting both urban and rural communities." Throughout the week,

USDA officials will celebrate at farmers market locations across the country. On Saturday, Aug. 6, Elanor Starmer, the Administrator of USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) – which conducts research, provides technical assistance, and awards grants to support local and regional food systems – will kick off the week visiting a farmers market and wrap up the week at USDA's own farmers market in Washington, D.C., on Friday, Aug. 12. "Farmers markets are a gathering place where you can buy locally produced food, and at the same time, get to know the farmer and story behind the food you purchase," said Administrator Starmer. "These types of markets improve earning potential for farmers and ranchers, building stronger community ties and access to local foods." To help farmers market managers across the country promote and celebrate National Farmers Market Week, USDA is sharing online free Farmers Market Week Cont'd on page 2
