WAYNE & GARFIELD COUNTIES - UPSTART is a free in-home computer-based early learning program available to all preschool-aged children that will be entering Kindergarten in 2015, and registration is open now. One thing that is great about the program is that if a child/family doesn’t own a computer or have Internet, both will be provided for them. Registration is open until May 30 for all children who are or will be four years old on or before September 1, 2014. Melinda Dalton has been named Garfield County School District’s liaison to the Rural i3 UPSTART Program, and Ashley Jackson has been named to coordinate the program for the Wayne County School District. Rural i3 UPSTART is an in-home, computer-based early learning program funded by a federal grant. The program is designed to prepare children for kindergarten and then prevent learning "decay" in the summer in just 15 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Participating children get

ty preschoolers excited about learning and well-prepared for their kindergarten teachers.” “The program is easyto-use and captures children’s interest and imagination with engaging books, songs, and activities,” said Garfield County UPSTART liaison Melinda Dalton. In pilot programs, UPSTART has received a 99 percent approval rating for preparing children for kindergarten from parents who have had children in the program, according to Waterford Institute. "We've worked with families throughout Utah who have never worked with technology before," added Miner. "And we've seen the great gains that the software can provide to preschoolers due to the individualized focus of the program. Now, with school district liaisons helping with outreach and training, we hope to make this program accessible to every four year old in our target school districts." Interested parents in Garfield County can contact Dalton at 435-418-0110 for more information and to pre-register, or in Wayne County they can call the Wayne County School District at 435-425-3813, or they can call Waterford Institute directly at 1-800-669-4533 with questions and to register. —Waterford Institute
