BACKCOUNTRY HORSEMEN UTAH FIRST GROUP RIDE
The new Canyon Country Chapter of the Back Country Horsemen of Utah held our first group ride on the evening of Saturday, May 5. With 16 mounted riders we left from the Escalante Fairgrounds at 6:15 p.m. and rode up onto “little desert” where we had a weinerroast and watched the full moon come up. Riders left at various times, but the last came riding back into town under a very bright moon, at 1 a.m. Everyone had a great time and all look forward to our next excursion. Back Country Horsemen of Utah is a chapter of Back Country Horsemen of America, primarily a service organization dedicated
to the common sense use and enjoyment of horses in America’s back country and wilderness areas. They work to insure that public lands remain open to recreational stock use by assisting various government and private agencies in maintenance and management of resources and by educating the public and encouraging wise use of the back country. The Canyon Country Chapter is proud to be a part of this nation-wide organization. We are planning several volunteer activities this Spring and Summer assisting the BLM, Park and Forest Services doing trail clearing, maintenance and packing out trash from vari-

The 800-foot damaged section of the road is located mid-way between Hwy 89 and Cannonville and according to Richard Madril, Resources Chief for GSENM, was caused when water diverted from an adjacent riparian area onto the road bed. ELLETTS “Essentially, you have a healthy riparian area filled with Cottonwoods and willows that DISTRIBUTING captured and slowed the runoff, collecting silt and eventually filling in until the riparian area actually became higher than the road…and water flows from a high point to a lower point – the road,” said Madril. Kane County officials and local GSENM managers and staff, including engineers from BLM’s Richfield and Salt Lake State Offices, met several times both on site and in Kanab to devise a repair plan that would provide an immediate fix for the road as well as long term measures to help prevent the problem from happening in the future. The initial repair work to get the road open and safe for travel is expected to take oneto-two weeks and involves taking material from the edge of the roadway for several miles that has built up over time from grading operations, the scree that eroded from the rock MAY 9-14TH cliffs alongside the road, and using that material to raise the roadbed higher than the riparian area. PRIZES & MORE “The longer term preventative measures will require additional funding. We, Kane County and the BLM, are looking to partner with other state and federal agencies to acSTOP BY quire the necessary funds,” said GSENM manager Rene Berkhoudt. ELLETTS IN LOA “This is an excellent example of what can be accomplished when local governments and FOR INFORMATION federal officials work together,”said Kane County Commissioner Dirk Clayson.

Southern System includes: Garfield County, Kane County, and Northern Arizona Area Loa, Utah, – Garkane Energy is working with WAPA (The Western Area Power Administration) on two pre-arranged power outages. The first pre-arranged outage tookplace on Sunday, April 15th. The 2nd pre-arranged outage is scheduled to occur on Sunday May 20th and will affect Garkane’s Southern System (the Southern System includes all of Kane County, most of Garfield County, and our Northern Arizona consumer/members – except as specified below). The May 20th outage will be from 12:00 a.m. Saturday night (Midnight) until approximately 6:00 a.m Sunday Morning. This outage is necessary for the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA), at Glen Canyon to do the necessary work to install abackup transformer to feed Garkane’s transmission line out of the dam. After the work has been completed, in association with these two outages, Garkane will have much better reliability out of Glen Canyon in case of a transformer malfunction or failure. This installation will provide Garkane a redundant transformer for backup at Glen Canyon. All of Kane and Garfield counties (except Antimony and Panguitch), and NorthernArizona, (except Colorado City and Hildale) will be affected. We urge all law enforcement, hospitals, telephone entities, and Churches to be aware, as this outage will run from midnight, Saturday Night (12:00 a.m.) to approximately 6:00 a.m Sunday Morning (6 hours total) May 20th. During this outage Garkane crews will be outworking on various projects throughout the system, that need to be accomplished, which can only be done when the power is out. We thank all of our consumer/members for their patience and understanding during these two critical outages. Garkane reminds its members to be prepared for power outages by choosing an easily accessible closet or cupboard for an emergency supply of flashlights, batteries, and other needed items.
