ORLANDO, FL - Breonna Hammon, spokesperson for the national Youth Leadership Council (YLC) and a student at Mohave Community College in Colorado City, Arizona, today addressed more than 8,500 electric cooperative leaders from across the country at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). In 2014, Hammon, a member of Garkane Energy Cooperative, Inc., was chosen by Utah’s Youth Tour participants to serve as a delegate to the Youth Leadership Council. At the YLC Leadership Conference, her fellow delegates selected her to serve as national spokesperson for the 42-member council. Standing before the co-
op leaders, Hammon offered the following reflection on her Youth Tour experience in Washington, D.C.: … [S]ome of my favorite moments happened sitting on the bus, traveling from point A to point B. Conversing with young adults so much like me, and yet so different. Challenging each other’s statistics, exchanging our favorite presidents. And it was in moments such as these that suddenly it did not matter what the girl to the right of me was wearing, it did not matter that the boy to the left of me had just told me he has never had a bed of his own. All of which were things that could have very easily classified us, labeled us, made Youth Leadership Cont'd on page 2
Winter Finally Arrives at Bryce Canyon National Park; Perfect Conditions for Cross-Country Skiing at Ruby’s Inn
Garkane Energy linemen and due to snow. LOA - Garkane Energy has received many inquiries as to why power goes out in some snowstorms and not all. Some snow is very dense and has a lot of moisture content and in the right temperature can cause heavy build-ups on the power lines. Snow in freezing temperatures doesn’t build up on the line as much as snow in warmer temperatures. Once snow builds up on the lines, the weight can break crossarms, causing faults in the lines. As snow builds up on trees, it can cause branches to fall into the lines, and as the electricity grounds, it causes power to blink on and off. After this occurs a few times, a built-in safety precaution will automatically shut the power off. Our tree-trimming effort helps prevent a lot of this from occurring frequently. equipment are at the ready to restore power during outages kane’s service territory in Wayne, Garfield, and Kane counties and in Northern Arizona. Garkane would like to thank its members for your patience this week as crews worked long, hard, hours dayand-night in the cold to restore power. The delays in restoring power is because access to some of these rural lines is only accessible by hiking, ATV’s, snowmobile, or via Sno-cats. Garkane feels very fortunate to have understanding
members who respond via Facebook to say thank you, and offer messages of hope for our lineman’s safety as they work quickly to restore power. We do our very best to communicate updates and restoration efforts through Facebook so members can plan around these unfortunate long outages caused by the weather. BRYCE CANYON CITY - Historic Ruby’s Inn is celebrating the best crosscountry skiing conditions the resort has seen in recent memory. “We’ve got the groomers working overtime to get the trails ready for guests,” said Jean Seiler, director of marketing for Ruby’s Inn. “We hope visitors get to enjoy these prime conditions before they’re gone.” Recent winter storms dropped more than two feet of snow along the network of
trails accessible from Ruby’s Inn, which provides the closest available lodging to Bryce Canyon National Park. The 15 km of groomed trails navigate through the resort’s expansive property and then into Dixie National Forest. Skiers experience the variety of winding through groves of Ponderosa pines and then into open areas with incredible scenic overlooks. “Getting out on the trails—either on skis or snowshoes—is one of the best ways to experience Bryce Canyon,”
Seiler said. “And best of all, there’s no charge to access our trail system.” Seiler added that conditions are also perfect for snowmobiling or just taking in the rare sight of thousands of crimson rock formations, called hoodoos, covered with white snow. Cross-country skis and snowshoes are available for rent at Ruby’s Inn. For more information on winter activities, visit: www.rubysinn.com or call 435-834-5341. —Ruby's Inn
