Competing in over 100 TT races, John has taken home 23 wins & 47 podiums. This year, despite some tricky conditions, John secured two top ten’s among his many races, but what keeps him motivated to keep coming back?
When the racing was on it was good racing. And two top ten’s – for me that’s where I am now, I’m a top ten guy. I can’t pull a rabbit out of the hat like I used to. But I still really enjoy it, and I’m super proud to be riding the No.1 Honda and warrant the job if you like. If I wasn’t good enough, I wouldn’t get the Honda job!
That’s what keeps me motivated – the fact I can still do it at 53. A lot of riders get to a point where if they can’t win, they don’t want to know. For me, to still pull the Honda Racing suit on, and go and have a bash at it is plenty.
I thought I’d be long finished - I was Joey Dunlop’s last ever teammate, and he won 3 TT’s at 48. As a youngster, I was looking up at him like “How’s this man still do it at 48?”. Though I do have to look in the mirror sometimes and think ‘You’re getting a bit saggy now, old boy!’
But yeah, I’m still doing it, and still enjoying doing it. I’ll keep on until that time I’m not competitive – then I’ll go and get my bus pass!
To be honest, I’m dead proud to be on these boxes. I’m on the best tool storage product in the business, and I’ll always be on it. So, it’s great for me, great for Honda, and hopefully great for Snap-on too.
