Handshakes, high-fives and hugs Saint Mary’s community shares life’s challenges, successes In the course of putting this issue together, I’ve laughed, I’ve cried and I’ve laughed so hard I’ve cried.

I laughed with the women of the ’70s, valiantly tackling the Challenge Ropes Course during the First Women event. And I got an even bigger chuckle as they formed a spirited conga line around the dining room during their rousing Angel Light production.

I cried when I listened to the personal reflections made at Brother Richard Gerlach’s ’35 funeral. Brother Richard, Saint Deb Nahrgang Mary’s oldest alum Saint Mary’s and the oldest Magazine editor Christian Brother in the Midwest District, died in December, just short of his 97th birthday. Even during his last days, his deep baritone voice could be heard singing the Christmas carols he knew by heart.

Just before going to press, we also said goodbye to Dr. Jon Kabara ’48. His entrepreneurial spirit, zest for life and dedication to ethical business will live on through the Kabara Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies on the undergraduate campus.

We also said goodbye to freshman Millie Harrison. More than 400 students joined together to celebrate her life. Her spirit too will live on through the many lives she touched.

I laughed when I watched the video of our hockey players visiting the Blackhawks headquarters at the United Center. The same said video, shot by our own creative players, had to be edited for length for SMU’s YouTube channel.

Some day I hope the world gets to view the extended version, complete with the athletes singing Disney showtunes on the bus.

I am saddened by the thought of losing several beloved and familiar faces as Dr. Marilyn Frost, Dr. Martin Judd

and Sister Clare Korte, Ph.D., retire after many years. The three have been at Saint Mary’s for a combined total of nearly 100 years.

Members of the Saint Mary’s community support each other throughout life’s highs and lows. It’s one of the reassuring constants in life that at Saint Mary’s you’re never alone. We hold each other up during the bad times. There’s always a shoulder to lean on through personal losses and health problems.

And there’s always someone extending a handshake or a high-five for each major accomplishment. We share each other’s joy and take pride in each other’s successes. (And as a woman, I reserve the right to cry at both ends of the emotional spectrum).

This magazine is filled with reasons to be proud.

So many of our alums, both undergraduate and graduate, are working hard in the political scene. Some are working at city, county or even school board levels. Others are elected to state or national positions. But all of them are working for the betterment of society. We can hope that, armed with the strong ethical foundation they’ve received from Saint

One alum, Joe Sweeney ’80, credits the background he received from his Catholic education in helping him formulate a successful business motto.

Our very first First-Generation students deserve our support and encouragement. Armed with a sincere desire to make the most of their college careers, these students often serve as inspirational role models to others back home in their inner-city communities.

Our Nairobi campus continues to have a ripple effect on improving education throughout Africa. It’s one of the clearest forms of Lasallian work. Both CTIE and Maryknoll graduates are improving the conditions of their communities through education.

William Jones, who will graduate this spring with a master’s degree in Philanthropy and Development from Saint Mary’s, has seen, first-hand, the power of education. Jones is this issue’s “I am Saint Mary’s” feature. His inspirational story is bound to touch your heart.

In the Jewison family, the cousins keep on coming, and BOY are we glad.

Learn why this family’s three generations of alums have enjoyed their time at Saint Mary’s.

As we grow close to our centennial event, ideas of ways to remember our rich heritage, celebrate our accomplishments and plan for our future are unfolding. As I look forward to seeing my classmates at our 50th homecoming in Winona, June 23-26, 2011, I am mindful of the many reasons I have to be thankful for my long-standing ties to Saint Mary’s, including the many ways its commitment to the legacy of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Institute of Christian Brothers for the education of poor, underserved youth, has been faithfully kept.

I am particularly grateful for the visionary leadership of Brother William Mann for establishing the First-Generation Initiative (FGI) as a goal of his presidency and for the diligent efforts of Brother Ed Siderewicz in making the dream of a college education a reality for the FGI scholars now studying at Saint Mary’s, who will be followed each year by 15 more deserving graduates of Lasallian and Cristo Rey schools.

I am also very proud of the graduates of Saint Mary’s who commit one or more years as Lasallian Volunteers to teach for San Miguel schools, and only wish there were a way to get more retired alumni involved in this Lasallian ministry as classmate Dick Drogosz ’61 is doing as a board member of the San Miguel Schools-Chicago, where he and his wife, Marianne CST’61, also serve as mentors.

As an educator of nearly 50 years myself, who was thoroughly prepared to teach by the dedicated Brothers, priests and laymen I was fortunate to be taught by at Saint Mary’s, I am also indebted to today’s faculty who are committed as Lasallian educators to the same ideals and high standards as set by John Baptist de La Salle and faithfully practiced by those who preceded them.

Two of these predecessors, who by their daily example taught me that teaching is a God-given vocation, were Brothers Leonard Courtney ’37 and Raphael Erler ’38, both of whom influenced my formation in ways that remain a part of me to this day, for which I shall

always be deeply grateful and which explain why I am yet proud to identify myself as a Brothers’ boy. In honor of their memory, and in thanksgiving for all others who taught the class of 1961, I pray that the spirit of De La Salle will live on forever at Saint Mary’s.

Remembering the early history of SMU radio First of all, my compliments to you and your staff on the Fall 2010 issue of Saint Mary’s Magazine. This is one of the best publications I have ever seen. The magazine in my opinion rivals national periodicals, corporate annual reports and certainly any other university magazine.

The layout, design, composition and content are very inviting to anyone who picks up the publication. It is an awardwinner if I have ever seen one.

Congratulations.

Now for a little trivia. In the “OUR HISTORY – looking back” section of the Fall 2010 issue of the magazine you asked about the photo of the young men wearing KSMR shirts. I can’t help you there but I can give you a little more history about the campus radio station. Bill Berg, Gerald Speltz and I were classmates (1959). Bill had a radio program WWW.SMUMN.EDU/MAGAZINE

LETTERS on one Winona radio station and I had a weekly program called the “Top Ten Derby” on KAGE, the other Winona station. We both were minoring in speech.

During our junior year Brother Raymond Long decided that we should have a campus station. He asked Bill, Gerald and I to help him get it started.

The closed circuit station did not have a regular transmitter and could only be heard on the Saint Mary’s and Saint Teresa campuses. Bill went on to be a broadcaster on one of the Chicago radio stations.

Former advisor left Winona but never truly left KSMR In your fall 2010 Saint Mary’s Magazine, you say, “There’s a connection here between students, alums, faculty and staff that spans generations, physical distance or areas of study.” I could not agree more.

As the former faculty advisor to KSMR that St. Patrick’s Day in 1978, I watched with pride as then General Manager David Filipczak became the first voice on air for the “new” 10-watt KSMR, which could finally be heard throughout the greater Winona area.

I may have left the Winona area, but in a way, I never left KSMR and the many students who contributed to making it a point of pride for Saint Mary’s.

Much was and, I am sure, is learned at KSMR: it is the kind of high engagement co-curricular activity that the Association of American Colleges and Universities celebrates.

The administration of Saint Mary’s took a chance on KSMR in allocating funds to make it possible. I applaud their vision and their support: quite probably thousands of students over the years have benefitted from this decision.

DJs, top hits of 1985 identified The students in the photo on the back page of the Fall 2010 issue of Saint Mary’s Magazine are: left to right: Todd (Gittens) Kronebusch, Brian Hutton, Tony Tlougan, and Paul Nedeau (me). I graduated in ’86 but I’m not sure about other students. I know Todd Gittens attended for about one year and a half at SMC. I managed the station for the 1985 school year, then ran the summer program since we had funding that year for work-study. This funding was targeted toward completing the radio station’s transfer from Heffron Hall’s lower level to the Student Center. Michael Flanagan, KSMR’s moderator, was instrumental in helping us make this transition to make the station more visible and accessible for all students. This included a glass window into the DJ booth. Our summer of ’85 program was very successful in attracting a newer and more youthful listener base, and we garnered the community’s support through partnerships and sponsorships with local businesses.

The top five hits of the summer of ’85 (according to the Aug. 4 playlist I saved) were: 1. The Power of Love (Huey Lewis and the News) 2. What About Love (Heart) 3. The Summer of ’69 (Bryan Adams) 4. Money for Nothing (Dire Straits) 5. If you Love Somebody, Set Them Free (Sting) I also have an article from the Winona newspaper when they featured our campus radio station. At the time, we designed a new “new music” format to replace the former “Rock of the Valley” prior to 1985. The new format was more consistent with for-profit stations, and we were the first to employ a music rotation schedule as a way to build our new image. We also left some flexibility for the on-air DJs to take requests. We also were the first to employ 24-hour music, leveraging “reel to reel” automation!

I know the station has experienced transitions, and I’d like to say thanks for publishing that photo — I received so many e-mails and reconnected with some old friends!

News and Views Forbes ranks SMU best for minority graduates in STEM programs Saint Mary’s University is the nation’s top-ranked college for minorities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs, according to a January report on Forbes.com.

Forbes ranked colleges and universities for helping racial or ethnic minorities succeed in STEM programs.

Forbes compared the percentages of blacks, Hispanics and American Indians (groups typically underrepresented in STEM) to whites and Asians (groups typically well-represented in STEM).

Forbes excluded from its analysis those schools with a student body that is almost entirely minority students.

Saint Mary’s University offers STEM programs in its traditional four-year bachelor of arts program at its Winona campus, as well as STEM programs within the bachelor of science completion programs for adult learners at its Twin Cities campus.

The Forbes report cited data from the overall Saint Mary’s undergraduate graduating class in 2008. Forbes said that class included about 10 percent underrepresented minority students, just above the national median for ranked colleges. “But of those minority students,” Forbes said, “35 percent received their degrees in STEM – well above the median among all colleges, which is 10 percent.”

Bob Conover, vice president for communication, noted that Saint Mary’s undergraduate STEM programs

“combine a strong academic component with opportunities for hands-on research and student interaction with professors.

I believe it’s this combination which helps us reach underrepresented populations.” Conover added that “as a Lasallian Catholic university, Saint Mary’s is studentcentered and committed to preparing learners for success in an increasingly complex and multicultural world.”

Purchase of Polish Heritage Lodge renews partnership with the Mississippi The university has, once again, found a way to benefit students and positively contribute to the river and its environs, with the purchase of the Polish Heritage Lodge on Winona’s Prairie Island, in the Mississippi River.

In September, Saint Mary’s purchased the former lodge with the intention of converting the building into a river field station for SMU science students and teachers.

“This purchase is another sign of SMU’s commitment to the sciences,” said Jim Bedtke, vice president for the College.

“The river and its extensive systems of dams, lakes and backwaters are an inextricable part of the history and fabric of Saint Mary’s University, which had one of the first environmental science programs in the country.”

The building, which currently houses the natural resource-focused staff of SMU’s GeoSpatial Services, gives the university direct access to the Mississippi and close proximity to the natural aspects and human activity defined by the waterway.

“Our students have always benefitted from hands-on learning with a Mississippi River focus,” Bedtke said. “But this facility will allow for enhanced and expanded environmental sciences programming for faculty, staff and students at both the graduate and undergraduate level. There are also plans for regular river-related programs that will benefit the larger community.”≠

Saint Mary’s honors faculty, staff, students at Founder’s Day April 5 Saint Mary’s University presented awards to alumni, faculty and students at its Founder’s Day Celebration Tuesday, April 5. Additionally, Brother Álvaro Rodríguez Echeverría, Superior General of the Institute of the Brothers of Christian Schools, served as the event’s keynote speaker.

Saint Mary’s presented honorary doctorates to Brother Michael Collins, FSC ’59, M’65, Ed.D., president and chief academic administrator of DeLaSalle High School in Minneapolis, and to Brother Jeffrey Gros, FSC ’59, M’62, Ph.D., professor of church history at Memphis Theological Seminary.

Brother Michael, who is also a current SMU trustee, was awarded a Doctorate of Leadership and Service.

He has been recognized locally, regionally and nationally for his contributions to education, and for his efforts to promote diversity within Catholic education.

Brother Jeffrey received a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. He is wellknown in the ecumenical movement for broadening the understanding and reach of ecumenism. He served for 10 years as director of faith and order for the National Council of Churches and served for 14 years at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Also honored were a dedicated faculty member, a Lasallian educator and two outstanding seniors.

Melissa Luedtke, Ed.D., of the Education Department received this year’s Brother H. Charles Severin, FSC, Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award is given every other year to an undergraduate faculty member who is recognized by both students and other faculty as exceptional in their teaching and engagement of students.

Roxanne Eubank, Ed.D., professor, Doctor of Education in Leadership program, and director of the Institute for Lasallian Studies, was chosen as this year’s Distinguished Lasallian Educator.

These awards are given by Lasallian institutions in the North America-Toronto Region of the De La Salle Christian Brothers to honor contributions and commitment to the Lasallian mission of education.

The SMU Chamber singers joined the community in welcoming Brother Álvaro.

Additionally, the Outstanding Male and Female Senior Awards were presented to students who have demonstrated the ideals of scholarship, character, leadership and service. Above all, these men and women have shown genuine concern for meeting the needs of others.

The Outstanding Male Senior Award went to Sean Ohl, son of John and Lori Ohl of Bloomington, Minn. The Outstanding Female Senior Award went to Hilary Ethen, daughter of Todd ’84 and Lucinda (Pudwill ’85) Ethen of White Bear Lake, Minn.

Ohl is a biology-pre-med major.

While at SMU, he served as president of Tri-Beta National Biological Honors Society (Gamma Epsilon Chapter) and completed a summer research internship for R&D Systems. He also played baseball, served as a resident assistant and practiced mixed martial arts. Ohl has also volunteered in the emergency room for Winona Health, and has been an EMT with the Lewiston Ambulance Service. After graduation, he plans to attend Midwestern Medical School (Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine).

Ethen is a K-8 elementary education major with a math concentration.

She has been involved with Open Mic Night, Serving Others United in Love (SOUL), Together Encountering Christ, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Residence Life, Relay for Life, Mass choir and Kappa Delta Pi (the educational honor society). She has also kept busy with SMU Volunteer Services, the Student Leadership Program Team, Students for Life, the Initial Teaching Alphabet (ita) Literacy Clinic, Lasallian Collegians, Habitat for Humanity, Admission Ambassadors, and the Outdoor Club.

Ethen was also part of the women’s tennis team and played intramural sports.

Her future dreams include teaching in Africa or at an inner-city school district.

University Advancement is unified, strengthened and reorganized The University Advancement area underwent a major reorganization in February. Dr. Steven Titus, senior vice president, has transformed university advancement operations and performance in order to more successfully identify, develop and secure the resources necessary to advance the Saint Mary’s University mission.

He led the first American news crew that reported on the crisis in Sudan’s Darfur region, and he also directed films from India and the Democratic Republic of Congo for the acclaimed PBS documentary series, Wide Angle.

De Sam Lazaro has also covered stories in the United States, including ancient manuscript preservation in Minnesota and technology’s impact on the patient-doctor relationship in American hospitals.

“Under-Told Stories” in the classroom Part of the “Under-Told Stories” mission is to reawaken the curiosity of Americans – students in particular – about the daily concerns of far-away people who increasingly affect our lives.

“Fred had a connection to a Saint Mary’s professor and was a guest speaker in one of our classes,” said Lindsay McCabe M’98, executive director of the Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership at Saint Mary’s University. “He happened to also be interested in having an office close to home.

We saw this as a unique opportunity for the university to connect with a respected journalist who not only reports on stories,

ect at so many levels,” de Sam Lazaro said. “Both foster an engagement with the major global issues of the day, and our journalism complements the learning and debate that come from textbooks and seminars, bringing home the relevance of these issues.”

Students in Saint Mary’s Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs will have access to hands-on experiences in some of the world’s developing regions. “Under-Told Stories” will also host special events, film premieres, and international guest speakers; and project content will be incorporated into the curricula of numerous Saint Mary’s courses.

Ethical leadership connection “Under-Told Stories” focuses on what de Sam Lazaro calls “solutions-oriented journalism.” In stories of despair, he seeks to find hope. Where there are barriers to understanding how a story in Asia or Africa affects Americans, he seeks to make the issue relevant.

“ ‘Under-Told Stories’ raises awareness of poverty, while shedding light on the opportunities and lessons to be found in impoverished places. This aligns well with Saint Mary’s commitment to diversity, accessibility, social justice, and ethical stewardship,” said McCabe.

“Fred gives Saint Mary’s University and the Hendrickson Institute a new perspective on how we can help under-privileged people solve problems,” McCabe added. “This really enriches our approach to raising awareness of our personal responsibility to tackle these issues.”

De Sam Lazaro played a major role in the Hendrickson Forum on Ethical Leadership on April 20.

He introduced keynote speaker Jacqueline Novogratz, CEO of the Acumen Fund and author of The Blue Sweater, whom he knows from his long career in journalism. He also moderated the forum’s Q&A. This was the first of several events that the Hendrickson Institute and “Under-Told Stories” will be a part of in the Twin Cities and Winona areas.

Shrine purchase expands the Minneapolis campus Saint Mary’s University recently signed a purchase agreement for the Shrine Properties adjacent to its Twin Cities campus, a move that almost doubles the size of the Saint Mary’s campus on Park Avenue South in Minneapolis.

The property is south of La Salle Hall on the Minneapolis campus and consists of a 54,000 square-foot event center (built in 1990), the 34,000 square-foot Harrington mansion and carriage house (built in 1902), and a 125-car parking lot.

“This acquisition will position the university to expand its profile in the metropolitan area, enhance our reputation, and provide a platform for increased revenue and financial support,” said Brother William, president. “We also are committed to working with community partners to use this asset in neighborhood revitalization.”

Saint Mary’s established adult education programs and degrees at 2500 Park Ave. S. in 1984, one of the first universities in the nation to focus on adult education. Since then the adult education component has grown to more than 4,000 students and 21,000 alumni. Saint Mary’s offers degree programs and professional licensure and certificates in the School of Business and Technology, Graduate School of Education, Graduate School of Human Services, and bachelor completion through the School of Professional Programs.

With the Shrine purchase, the university will have seven campus buildings on Park Avenue between 26th and 23rd Avenues South. In addition, Saint Mary’s operates adult education centers in Oakdale, Apple Valley, Minnetonka, and Rochester.

Graduate programs are also offered from the Winona campus. Saint Mary’s intends to use the purchased properties to support education activities such as commencement, seminars, speaker series, and alumni engagement.≠

Centennial planning gains momentum In 2012-13, Saint Mary’s will mark its centennial with a yearlong celebration, filled with special events.

To coordinate these activities, Bridget McCoy was hired as the university’s centennial and special events director. She is a key member of the Centennial Celebration Committee that began meeting last fall to plan and execute the year's activities.

A graduate of the University of Minnesota, McCoy served as event coordinator with the McNamara Alumni Center at the U of M. In this position McCoy helped manage and execute more than 900 events annually. Previously, McCoy served as marketing Bridget McCoy coordinator for Gopher athletics.

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION COMMITTEE The Centennial Celebration Committee — made up of faculty, staff and students from throughout the university — is meeting regularly to plan for Saint Mary’s centennial and beyond. The centennial is as much about positioning for the future as it is about celebrating Saint Mary’s strong history. SMU hockey tours Blackhawk facilities

The Saint Mary’s University men’s hockey team netted executive suite seats after an all-access tour of the United Center – home of the NHL’s Stanley Cup Chicago Blackhawks — on Dec. 5, 2010.

After completing weekend games in Milwaukee, on Sunday the 29-member team was treated to an exclusive tour of the Blackhawks’ facility, including the team’s locker room, weight room, training room, equipment room and all levels of the United Center. The Cardinals closed their day by watching the Blackhawks beat the Calgary Flames.

The visit was made possible through Chicago Blackhawks’ president and 1975 Saint Mary’s alum, John McDonough.

McDonough was named president of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2007. Under his leadership, in what Forbes Magazine has called the “The Greatest Sports-Business Turnaround Ever,” the Blackhawks have become one of professional sports biggest success stories. McDonough guided the team to a Stanley Cup title in 2010, the teams first since 1961.

“I think Mr. McDonough’s career has been remarkable and we are so grateful that he was willing to come back to SMU

(in September 2010) and share his stories, along with provide the team a terrific day at the United Center,” commented junior forward Vincent Unklesbay.

Junior forward, team captain and videographer Thomas Healy emphasized his personal highlight of the trip was ultimately the time spent with his team.

“Any sports season can be a grind but when you have the opportunity to step back from

it all, it’s a restoring experience. You realize how much you love and respect not only the game, but especially your teammates.”

First-Generation First-Generation students share experiences from their first year at Saint Mary’s

Like many first-year college students, Ibrahim Dickey and Yasmin Duarte grumble about the cafeteria food, get a little homesick from time to time and spend numerous hours cramming for tests and quizzes.

But these two First-Generation Initiative Scholarship recipients are loving every minute of it.

“I think the things we’ve been through make us value education a little more,” Duarte said.

The intent of the new First-Generation Initiative is to provide full scholarships to lowincome, high-potential, qualified students with preference given to partner schools. In 201011, 15 students received full or partial scholarships as part of the initiative.

Duarte, a Chicago native, calls her hometown neighborhood, Little Village, a ghetto. She describes it as a place with gangs, violence and shootings.

Times have been tough for her family.

Her father has been laid off for two years and finding jobs hasn’t been easy.

Dickey grew up in Sierra Leone, West Africa, amidst the chaos and violence of a brutal civil war. He lost his parents by the tender age of 5 and then lived with his aunt for a few years. He spent his youth on the run. “I saw kids captured by rebels and given drugs and guns,” he said.

Quietly, he shakes his head and says simply, “I’ve seen some things.”

Dickey lived at an orphanage for three years before being adopted by a couple from the United States. In 2006, he enrolled at the International School of Minnesota, Eden Prairie. Once in the U.S., he said, he knew that going to college was in his future.

Sadly, his adoptive father would never see Dickey enrolled. He passed away two years ago, and his adoptive mother quit her job to care for his father when he got sick.

Both of his parents, he said, expected and influenced him to further his education.

“It never crossed my mind that I would not want to go to college,” he said.

For Duarte, who attended Cristo Rey High School, seeing close friends and family

make the wrong decisions — like not finishing high school — only inspired her to work harder. “I want to have a better life. I wanted to get out of there, and I want a better place for my future and my family,” she said.

Dickey too has seen close friends take the wrong path. “I have a friend who has been in prison already,” he said. “He doesn’t know what’s right and what’s wrong. It’s not easy to talk about. I learn from his mistakes.

That’s not the type of person I want to hang around.”

Both know that education is the key to changing their lives.

Dickey calls his scholarship his “ticket.”

“Without it, I would have a lot of student loans and I would have to keep up with all the paperwork for financial aid,” he said.

“And I would have probably ended up in a school where there was nobody to push you, except yourself.”

Duarte adds, “It’s very helpful that we don’t need to worry about tuition. Our priority isn’t money, it’s about studying instead. My family and I are very grateful for this opportunity, and I know I need to take advantage of it. I encourage my little brother to do well in high school and go to college. I hope he can get a full scholarship.”

Duarte will be the first from her family to graduate from college. She wants to major in psychology, go to grad school and become a high school counselor in the Chicago area.

“This is the stage that is most critical in a person’s development,” she said. “I want to help them make better choices and help them to see the big picture. I want to tell them, ‘Don’t fall into peer pressure.’ ” Dickey is majoring in sports management. An avid soccer player, he says he loves all sports. “When I wake up in the morning, I want to go to a job that involves sports,” he said. “I don’t want to be in a job where I’ll be crabby and not want to go to work.”

For the time being, Dickey and Duarte can only be in one activity at Saint Mary’s.

because of what we’ve been through,” Dickey said.

They even call each other their second family. And as such, Duarte jokes, the FGI literary specialist Janet Willis would be their second mom, known for making them tea when they’re sick.

“The FGI programming won’t let you fail,” Duarte said.

Dickey added, “We won’t let each other fail.”

A first-semester update The students of Cohort I of the FirstGeneration Initiative are completing their first year at Saint Mary’s University.

At the end of the first semester, of the nine students on full scholarship, five students achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Of the other six FGI scholars who are receiving generous scholarship packages, four students achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher. One student withdrew for medical reasons.

Brother Ed Siderewicz, assistant to the President for First-Generation and Lasallian Initiatives, said, “Though there is room for improvement, the majority of FGI Scholars have exceeded our expectations.

“Light from darkness … hope from despair … life from death … leveling the playing field so that all have a place at the table. This is our gospel story. This is our Lasallian story,” Brother Ed observed.

PACC gives high school students a jump on college Now freshmen at SMU, John Soucheray and Rim Woldeslassie knew that taking PACC (Program for Advanced College Credit) while attending high school made sense (and cents).

Through SMU’s unique dualenrollment college credit program, students at private affiliate high schools are able to take college-level courses right in their own high schools. Students then receive college credit from Saint Mary’s.

There’s no question it saved them money. At the reduced rate of $60 per credit, each saved $2,370 in tuition for three credits alone. The more PACC courses a student takes, the more money they could potentially save on housing and student fees, as well as tuition.

Soucheray, from Hill Murray High School in Woodbury, Minn., is also quick to tout the edge taking a college-level course gave him academically.

“It was also a good way to get into the groove and understand what a college education was like,” he said. “The (theology PACC) course was definitely a step up from my usual high school courses. The people in the class were there to get college credit; they wanted to get ahead in college, and it was good to be in a class with those type of people who were willing to work harder.”

Woldeslassie, who attended CretinDerham Hall High School in St. Paul, agrees: “I would have to say that academically (my PACC physics class) was as challenging and fulfilling as any other class I have taken here at Saint Mary’s. It was a nice taste of what college work was going to be like and I could check off one more general requirement, so I can focus on what classes I like for my major.”

Soucheray says it was nice to begin college a few credits ahead of the majority of his classmates. The early credits take a little pressure off of students’ credit course loads down the line. And the edge it gave him in being able to select his classes earlier was an added bonus. (Course registration is set up so that those with more credits get to register earlier and thereby are more likely to get their desired classes.)

Celebrating Nairobi connections In December, Campus Ministry staff and students presented a check for $1,500 to Brother Paulos Mesmer for the Friends of CTIE Scholarship Fund. Campus Ministry’s Mission Awareness Group raised funds by conducting a Dance for Africa and by selling T-shirts.

Saint Mary’s campuses are located more than 8,000 miles apart, but even across time zones, Saint Mary’s mission of empowering learners to ethical lives of service and leadership is just as strong.

Saint Mary’s is affiliated with two institutes at Tangaza College in Nairobi, Kenya: the Maryknoll Institute of African Studies, and Christ the Teacher Institute for Education.

The Maryknoll Institute of African Studies offers an intensive enculturation experience for those wishing to learn more about African cultures and results in a Master of Arts degree in African Studies.

The primary goal of the MIAS program is to teach, systematically, contemporary cultures and religion of East Africa in such a way that students begin to appropriate and articulate an African perspective on these realities.

The Maryknoll Institute hopes to instill in its students not only an appreciation and understanding of the African culture, but also a new way of seeing and thinking about Africa, as well as all cultures.

Classes at Maryknoll are designed for postgraduate students in three categories: those who are engaged in pastoral, educational, medical and development work in East Africa; African citizens; and lecturers and students from outside Africa.

Ayers gets taste of Africa through summer Nairobi program

On SMU’s Twin Cities campus, Sarah Fisher ’04 and Mary Thole M’01 represented the Campus Spirituality Team in presenting a $1,000 check to Brother Paulos ’90. The check was a 'kick-off' of a yearlong fundraising project for 2011. The group has conducted a batik sale and will be holding various events including a Mardi Gras pot luck in March, Oktoberfest 2011, and other events to raise additional funds.

Many lay students cannot afford the annual tuition of $2,500. Saint Mary’s has inaugurated “Friends of CTIE” to help fund scholarships for students at CTIE. Fundraising efforts began this past summer, and the first funds were presented in December. The goal is to provide two scholarships each of the next four years.

“A dollar goes a long way these days,” Brother Paulos said.

“We will spread this money out to students who really struggle, and it will become a cushion to help them to move forward.

There are a good number of them who would not be able to make it without this type of help. They never abuse the support that is given to them. They come to me for help only when they are desperate. This gives me the confidence to extend the hand in whatever way possible. Most students are extremely grateful.”

When Dr. Carolyn Ayers decided to apply for the summer program in Nairobi, her original goal was to learn more about the culture, so that she could better absorb African literature and then present it in her World Literature courses at Saint Mary’s.

Although it wasn’t her main goal, after experiencing multiple language barriers and a challenging mass transit system, she also learned to be more tolerant of college freshmen.

And as a fringe Dr. Carolyn Ayers benefit, she was able to witness the magnificence of the wildebeest migration.

Between June and July 2010, Dr. Ayers, English department chair and associate professor of English on the Winona campus, was granted a faculty development opportunity to participate in a summer immersion program at the Maryknoll Institute for African Studies. The overall goal of the program is to appreciate African life from the inside, and to increase understanding and awareness of the African culture and traditions.

The Maryknoll Institute and Christ the Teacher Institute for Education, located at Tangaza College in Nairobi, are both academically affiliated with Saint Mary’s University.

For every other year since the mid-1990s (except for two years when travel to Nairobi was considered unsafe) the university has financially sponsored full-time College faculty members’ trips to Nairobi — with the collaboration of the Faculty Development Committee at the College.

Others who have studied at Maryknoll in past years include: Dr. Dorothy Diehl M’04, modern/ classical languages; Dr. Stephen Pattee M’04, Interdisciplinary Studies; Dr. Gregory Gaut ’69, history; Dr. Shelly McCallum M’96, business; and Dr. Patrick O’Shea, music. In the future, this program will be offered every other year to a College faculty member and in opposite years to a faculty member in the Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs.

Dr. Ayers has been to Russia and other European countries and lived in Holland for several years, but she had never been to Africa.

Her interest in Kenya escalated when, in 2005, she served on SMU’s International Series Committee, which brought famous Kenyan writer, Ngugi wa Thiong'o to the Winona campus. “After meeting him and reading his work, I became interested in African literature,” said Dr. Ayers. “I wanted to learn about the African environment and culture in order to help me interpret the text.”

As Maryknoll’s African Studies program follows an anthropological model, Dr. Ayers said the experience was especially beneficial. Beyond the classroom learning, a research assistant (often a graduate of Christ the Teacher Institute for Education) helped students conduct interviews. Dr. Ayers used this unique opportunity to speak with teachers and students of African literature.

“What I was able to learn about African cultures has, as I hoped it would, given me a much better knowledge base from which to present all sorts of material in my literature courses,” she said. “I include African literature in my World Literature and Critical Approaches classes, and I am working on creating a seminar in African literature as well. First-hand exposure to the cultures in which the works were written is invaluable for me in helping students gain one of the main benefits of literature: a sense of empathy for the stories of others.

“For myself and for the students, understanding more about African literatures and cultures contributes a piece to the puzzle of how narratives preserve, negotiate, and transmit cultural values in general.”

Dr. Ayers also attended church with and visited the home of her research assistant. Not able to speak the dialect of his family, she said she did a lot of smiling and nodding.

She called the opportunity both valuable and enjoyable.

“For four weeks I could just concentrate on absorbing the experience,” she said.

But, she quickly adds, the beauty of the immersion program is that you learn equally from both the experiences you are trying to have and from the accidental experiences you encounter as part of being immersed.

Dr. Ayers’ classmates were mostly religious workers who were beginning work in Africa. Maryknoll conducted three summer classes simultaneously, and Dr. Ayers was able to meet the students from the other two classes during tea breaks, lunch and lectures. At the hostel where she stayed, Dr. Ayers met people from all over the world.

And then, there were the “accidental learning experiences” that occurred on the bus she took between her hostel and Tangaza College, where Maryknoll’s classes are held.

“It was exhausting to have to deal with the every-day small differences like how to use the bus transportation system and how to ‘fit in’ with cultural expectations. I found myself clinging to middle-aged women,” she said laughing. “I decided that if I watched what they did and followed them, I would be doing what was expected of me.”

One of the most challenging aspects of the program was negotiating the public transportation system, which includes the notorious matatus, or informal vans. With language barriers and dialect differences, as well as busses that don’t travel on schedules and unmarked routes, getting to meetings and classes on time proved to be challenging. Fortunately, Dr. Ayers was always safely delivered to her destinations.

“It made me very sympathetic to our freshmen who are suddenly in a different environment,” she said with a smile. “It made me more conscious of their new experiences.”

After the program was finished, Dr. Ayers was joined by her husband, Brett. The two toured Nairobi and took a short safari, where they had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness the annual migration of the wildebeests.

Does she recommend the program?

“Oh my gosh yes, very strongly,” she said. “Not only do you get to see what else Saint Mary’s is doing in Africa and gain a deeper appreciation for our work here in Winona, but it’s a chance to go to the other side of the world in a way that’s structured, but not too structured.

“Father Michael Kirwen, the director of MIAS, is, as many of my colleagues who have met him know, tireless in encouraging faculty and other members of the Saint Mary's community to come and participate in the summer immersion program,” Dr. Ayers said. “In addition to being an inspirational role model in his commitment to the program and its educational goals, he is, I can vouch, a most gracious and welcoming host. He and the rest of the MIAS staff attended to many of the logistical arrangements of my visit and in general made sure my time in Nairobi went as smoothly as possible.

More than that, conversations and time spent with him helped me process the experience more fully. Saint Mary's is lucky to have this affiliation with the MIAS program, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in it.”≠

Joe Sweeney ’80 publishes best-selling book about networking As a successful businessman and now “New York Times” bestselling author, Joe (known by a select few as Gary Joe) Sweeney ’80 touts that he has more than 3,000 names, addresses and phone numbers in his BlackBerry.

One name might be former football player Brett Favre, whom he represented in a number of endorsement deals in the 1990s. Sweeney helped grow the then Green Bay Packers quarterback’s off-thefield income from $65,000 to more than $4 million annually.

Another name might be sportscaster Bob Costas, whom Sweeney creatively but unconventionally convinced — via a complimentary box of brats and case of secret sauce from the Milwaukee County Stadium — to emcee the Wisconsin Sports Hall of Fame Dinner in Milwaukee in November.

In business, Sweeney will be the first to admit that sometimes the old cliché is true: it’s who you know. And networking, in a nutshell, has been one key to Sweeney’s successes.

He shares the ins and outs of networking in his new book (with Mike

Yorkey), Networking is a Contact Sport, which details “how staying connected and serving others will help you grow your business, expand our influence — or even land your next job.”

Sweeney built a career by combining his love of business and his passion for sports. He is currently a managing director of Corporate Financial Advisors, a Milwaukee investment banking firm that brokers business transactions and raises capital for middle-market businesses.

He has owned and operated four manufacturing companies, been president of the Wisconsin Sports Authority and was founder and president of Sports Management Group, a sports marketing agency that specializes in assisting and representing coaches and athletes.

Sweeney says the whole premise of his book is based on what he received from 20 years of strong Catholic education. “It’s part of the Jesuit/Christian Brother approach to life. It’s about connecting with others and getting close to others,” he said.

While at Saint Mary’s, Sweeney remembers the close connections he made with faculty: Father Tom Etten, Brother

Gabriel Fagan, FSC, Pat Costello ’54, and Marilyn Frost (formerly Solberg) and Ken Solberg. “They provided insight and wisdom and helped me see things that were down the road,” he said. “Saint Mary’s provides you with the ability to network on an intimate basis with people you can’t network with at big schools. I think part of the whole Saint Mary’s thing, too, is that it gave you the confidence that you could do anything in life and provided the setting and emotional and structural support to give you confidence to do that.”

As Sweeney talks to young people, he tells them to identify their passions: “It’s not just about getting a job, it’s about doing something that you’re jazzed about. What’s the music playing inside of you? I am shocked, absolutely shocked, at the onset of alcoholism and depression in middle-aged people; I’m convinced it’s because at 22 those people didn’t listen to the music inside of them.

“But it doesn’t matter what you do in life; you also need to focus on what type of person you’re going to be.” Sweeney hopes that his book drives home the idea that in business — and life in general — you’ve got SPRING 2011

to give and not get. “People say I’ve got to get a job, get an income; we’re in an ‘I’ve got to get’ society. The whole idea (of my book) is to reframe what networking is all about – it’s really a place you go to give and not get.” In giving, Sweeney says, you shall receive.

Of all the people who have sent Sweeney congratulations on his book’s success, it was his sister-in-law’s comment that touched him the most. She said, “I never liked business. I thought it was about greed, and your book has completely helped me reframe what business is all about.”

In truth, Sweeney began writing some memoirs for his adult children and never intended to publish them. “I thought, what a great idea, to leave something behind when you’re dead and gone for your kids,” he said. After reading the book in its beginning stages, his friends convinced him to publish it — which wasn’t an easy decision.

“It makes me vulnerable; it talks about my demons, mistakes in life. It’s one thing to share that with your kids and it’s a whole other thing to share it with the world,” he said.

But as the book gained momentum, Sweeney put the same effort into promoting the book as he puts into other avenues of his life. Never one to do anything halfway, Sweeney’s quick-paced enthusiasm is convincing. You get the idea that Sweeney can simply motivate his wishes into reality.

Several weeks before his book was published, Sweeney decided he should figure out how to get on the New York Times bestseller list.

So he did.

To culminate a yearlong celebration of the 40th anniversary of women at Saint Mary’s, the Alumni Association, along with a 13-member alumnae steering committee, hosted a First Women of Saint Mary’s Event Oct. 7-10, 2010.

It was a weekend filled with numerous activities — and countless hugs — and about 125 alumnae (and guests) reconnected with each other and the Winona campus they once called home.

All of the events celebrated the “sheroes” of SMU who paved the way for all women on Terrace Heights.

The celebration began with an opening social at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum and a presentation by Rachelle Schultz, CEO of Winona Health and board chair of the museum.

Current students met these “first women” at academic open houses, and some alumnae attended and spoke in classes. A faculty/staff reception brought more memories on Friday evening.

On Saturday, women laced their sneakers for a 5K run/walk through the trails; several women braved the Challenge ropes course and still others learned to Ceili dance with Dr. Katie Flanagan M’75.

Campus tours were offered; Brother John Grover ’65 took a group of women canoeing; and Dr. William Crozier led a couple of spirited trolley tours of Winona.

The weekend’s formal activities concluded with a dinner and entertainment,

which included a warm welcome by Brother William and a flashback to the ’70s Blue Angel/Gaslight shows. Performers bravely took the stage once again in “Angel Light” and belted out favorites like “You’ve Got a Friend” and “Me and Bobby McGee.” The evening ended with a rousing performance by the Oldie Moldie All-Stars as the audience took to its feet and moved to the beat.

Alumnae from the College of Saint Teresa joined the women of Saint Mary’s for several events including the 5K and the Saturday luncheon.

A family’s growing legacy at Saint Mary’s University At Jewison family gatherings, Saint Mary’s University is a popular topic of conversation.

Discussions frequently drift to familiar professors, details of how the campus has changed and other memories.

The Jewison family’s first introduction to Saint Mary’s began with Father Harry Jewison, who graduated in 1950, cum laude, with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy.

Little did he know 60 years ago, that nearly 30 nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and their spouses would follow in his footsteps — with more descendents planning to attend.

For Father Harry, the choice to go to Saint Mary’s was simple. He planned to enter the seminary and when the seminary moved to Saint Mary’s, he moved too.

He remembers loving Saint Mary’s small size and personal attention.

“I am proud of the family,” he said. “It’s a great university and I know that they are still getting a great education by choosing to go there.”

The Jewison family has majored in education, accounting, business management, business law, psychology, public relations, graphic design, marketing, English and philosophy … among others.

And they’ve obtained both undergraduate and graduate degrees. In education, some of the cousins have gone through the undergraduate education program, the Master’s of Education program and the Master of Arts in Instruction program.

The entire family, with the exception of Father Harry, has come to know Tony Piscitiello ’69, M’82, vice president for admission.

And Richard Kopischke ’73 and his niece Julie (Jewison ’03) Schultz both have had the pleasure of calling Room 113 of Skemp Hall home.

Molly Jewison ’10 — the most recent Jewison SMU graduate — admitted that she originally looked at attending Saint Mary’s because so many of her cousins had attended previously.

“I really didn’t know much about the school except that the rest of the family really enjoyed their time there,” she said.

“After my second visit to Saint Mary’s, I decided that the smaller campus and closeknit community was a place that I could call home.”

Molly listed the thing she loved most about Saint Mary’s as relationships.

“The staff and my professors took interest in life outside of the classroom,” she said. “Being a SPRING 2011

small campus it was so easy to meet people and it was hard to walk across campus without getting stopped to talk.”

She also is thankful that Saint Mary’s small size allowed her to get involved with many different organizations on campus, which in turn, introduced her to so many people. She added, “It was through these organizations and living in the closeknit community that I was able to meet my best friends and make memories that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.”

Laura Polzin, who will graduate in 2012, agreed with her cousin. “What I love most about SMU is the closeness of the community,” she said. “Everyone knows everyone and I feel so at home here. The teachers are willing to help whoever comes their way, and make efforts to get to know

you on a personal level. You can tell that the teachers really care about you as an individual. I have also made the best of friends and they will continue to be a huge part of my life for many years to come after graduation.”

Polzin too chose to attend because of her family’s history. But, she added, “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my future so the doors were open to any school.

When I finally came and took a tour, I just knew that it was the place for me and chose to look no further. It is easily one of the best decisions I have ever made.”

Polzin said she has convinced her younger brother, Adam, to attend Saint Mary’s this upcoming fall.

Sean Duffy takes unconventional

SMU alum goes from reality TV star to U.S. Congressman Congressman Sean Duffy ’94 has one free, yet valuable piece of advice for college students. “If you’re ever considering running for office, I don’t recommend you do a reality show,” he says with a chuckle.

A quick Google search of Duffy’s name will result in over a million hits, most with related titles like, “From Real World to Congress” or “Former reality star elected in Wisconsin.”

Further down the list, there are other hits for Sean Duffy the “district attorney” and the “lumberjack.”

And, admittedly, some of those sites focus on the other lesser-known Sean Duffy’s of the world.

Nearly 20 years ago, when Duffy was in his 20s and attending Saint Mary’s, the Northern Wisconsin native admits he would have never predicted that he was destined for a career in politics following a brief stint as a reality star.

He remembers what it was that originally drew him to Terrace Heights.

“I wanted to go to a smaller Catholic university, and I came

down and visited the campus on a cold fall day and I liked it,” he said. “I thought it was a warm, friendly campus environment that would serve me well. It just felt right.” A business marketing major, he enjoyed taking classes with Jeff Hefel, but he admits, he had no real life plan.

Already somewhat of a celebrity back then, Duffy was a world-class champion lumberjack competitor.

“In Hayward (Wis.), they hold the lumberjack world championships, and you start learning this stuff pretty young there,” he said. “At 5 years old, I would go down and practice log rolling … but the most exciting competition is speed climbing.

When I got old enough, about 13 or 14, I convinced some guys to let me use their spurs so I could practice climbing.”

Duffy is a two-time world champion in the 90-foot speed climb, three-time world champion in the 60-foot climb and an accomplished log-roller.

When he decided to apply for MTV’s “Real World” Boston in 1997, he used his

background in lumberjacking to stand out from the other 20-some-year-old competitors.

Duffy was more than a year into law school, when he saw a commercial looking for applicants for the reality television show.

He sent in a video detailing his log rolling and speed climbing prowess, was chosen, and then spent six months living in a house with seven strangers – all under the close — and enduring — scrutiny of a video camera.

“They choose people with very unique and different backgrounds,” he said. “You get conflict, you get controversy, and that’s what you got in that show as well. If people were to see (the ‘Real World’ shows) today, they’re nothing like the show I did. Though I look back and admit I did embarrassing things, it’s nothing like what they’ve done on recent shows.”

Even over the phone, you can almost visualize him shrugging his shoulders. “I look back

and think, ‘What the heck was I doing?’ But I was 24 and 25 years old, and who doesn’t say and do ridiculous things when they’re 24 and 25 years old?”

One positive outcome of doing the reality show, was that Duffy met his wife, Rachel Campos-Duffy, who was a contestant on “The Real World” San Francisco season in 1994. Four years later, the two met on the set of MTV’s “Road Rules: All Stars,” which featured the “Real World” contestants from past seasons.

The couple celebrated their 12th anniversary in April. “She is a Catholic conservative. She’s fun, she’s attractive, and we hit it off,” he said. “We became good friends first.”

Their family quickly expanded. They have six children, ranging in age from 11 to 1: Evita, Jack, Lucia-Belen, John-Paul, Paloma, and MariaVictoria.

Duffy is especially proud of the work he did in prosecuting child sex crimes in his previous professions as a special prosecutor and as

the Ashland County district attorney.

“We started one of the first Internet sting operations for child predators,” he said.

“We successfully charged and tried a good number of child sexual assault charges, which are some of the toughest cases you can try. They prey upon kids.”

Duffy admits it was because of his children that he first became interested in the political scene. The desire to make the world a better place for his children guided his path.

The November elections were exciting for several Saint Mary’s University alums, both graduate and undergraduate.

Here are just a couple of the other successful campaigns: Democratic incumbent Tim Walz (Mankato), a candidate in SMU’s doctoral program in leadership, was re-elected a U.S. Representative from Minnesota’s 1st District. Walz has been in office since 2006.

Carolyn Laine M’03 (DFLColumbia Heights), who earned a M.A. in Psychology from Saint Mary’s, was re-elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives for seat 50A. Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas Kilbride ’78 has begun a second 10-year term. He was elected to the Supreme Court of Illinois for the Third District in 2000 and was elected as Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court in October 2010.

Matt O’Shea ’91 was elected as a new alterman of Chicago’s 19th Ward.

Additionally, former U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns ’71 (R-Nebraska) continues to serve in the U.S. Senate. Johanns served six years as Nebraska’s 38th Governor from 1999 to 2005 before being appointed Secretary of Agriculture by President George Bush in 2005. On Jan. 6, 2009, Johanns was sworn in as U.S. Senator for Nebraska.

Congratulations go out to all alumni who have been elected to office, as well as those who ran for an elected position but were defeated.

“I didn’t follow politics much through college and law school,” he said. “But when I had kids, I began to follow it frequently.

You could say that being a father got me engaged in the process.”

Duffy again garnered national attention for his campaign commercials — three of which featured his lumberjacking forte.

One, for example, shows him chopping atop a tall timber while touting, “I’ll bring the axe to Washington.”

A conservative Republican, Duffy says he has conversations with his children about why it’s important for him to be gone so frequently to Washington, D.C. “If you look at where we are right now in American history – if you look at the fiscal crises leaning on our doorstep — it’s a critical time.”

Discussions in the Duffy household sometimes drift to political platforms. “(My children) know what we believe,” he said.

“They’re old enough to pick up what’s happening and what we’re doing. They ask questions. They’ve been a part of this whole process. You can’t do this with six kids unless they’re a part of the process, because they’re making sacrifices with us.”

He doesn’t believe that the Duffys will become the next Kennedys. “I don’t think about my kids following in my footsteps,” he said. “I’ll look forward to them following their own course. I want them to pursue their own dreams, not necessarily mine.”

But, he says, the Duffys are definitely keeping the plaid flannel in the family. His eldest children will compete in lumberjack competitions this summer. “It’s a good

family tradition,” he said. “They have an absolute ball.”

He said his family tries to combine the fun stuff and the political stuff. “We did a lot of parades last year,” he said with a laugh. “We do as a family everything we do. It’s hard to be away from all the kids, because I enjoy being with them. But I’m able to arrange our schedule to have a good family life. I’m on the last flight out to D.C. and first flight back home.”

Duffy’s home-away-from-home these days is his office in Washington, where he sleeps on a double-thick air mattress.

“It’s pretty expensive to live out here,” he said. “The hours are long. I work from 7:45 in the morning to 11 or 11:30 at night, so it kind of works out. While I’m here, I’m here to work. And I believe that people come to this town and lose touch.

They come here with one set of convictions and beliefs and they lose them. I don’t want that to happen to me. You don’t want to forget where you come from. And it ensures you always want to go home.”≠

Sister Clare Korte, OSF, M’67, D.A. ■ Sister Clare Korte, OSF, M’67, D.A., has been called “Mom” by many of her students throughout the years.

It could be that her white hair, her small stature and her kind voice remind students of their mothers.

It could be that she brings home-baked goodies to share with the office or that she knows all kinds of “motherly” secrets like the fact that ice cubes can help save orchids.

Even in hip waders, Sister Clare’s maternal nature takes over. She’s had to help dry off more than a couple of students studying invertebrates in Gilmore Creek. “A number of them have fallen in the water over the years,” she said.

And she sometimes finds that her advice falls on deaf ears. Students are sometimes reluctant to trade their flip-flops and shorts for sturdy shoes and long pants when hiking in the bluffs. “I figure they’ll learn the hard way,” she said adding, “Moms scold, and moms help you out.”

It’s all part of her work philosophy — that teaching doesn’t just occur inside the classroom.

While it might be true that she has been a caring figure in the Biology Department for 37 years, there’s more to Sister Clare than her rum cake.

For starters, Sister Clare details a childhood filled with hard work.

She was raised as part of a large farm family, one of five girls and five boys. When her dad died, Clare was only 10 years old, and she — like each of the children — had to take on additional chores involving the crops, as well as raising cows, pigs, horses and chickens. This was the setting, she said, which first planted a seed for her love of biology.

At 16, she graduated from high school and then started college — as an art major.

“I wasn’t that good, and I didn’t see that it had a future for me,” she said.

She switched to math and began teaching high school. A relocation to another high school brought a new challenge, teaching physics.

“Oh my gosh,” she said, “It was not my joy.”

So when there was an opening in biology, Sister Clare asked to switch. She then set about obtaining her M.S. in Biology from Saint Mary’s during summers in Winona. “(Saint Mary’s administration) kept asking me to teach here,” she said. “And after three years of them bugging me, I said, ‘OK.’ I came and I stayed and I have not regretted it at all.”

Sister Clare, who served 21 years as the Biology Department chair at Saint Mary’s, said she has never felt out of place as a woman in the sciences.

“Not here,” she says quickly. “I’ve been accepted as any other professor. And I would not want to be given any special consideration.”

Few may know that Sister Clare once took a course on atomic nuclear and solid-state physics at Yale on a dare.

Or that she did the original design work for the Brother Charles Hall science addition.

“I would come in and play dumb to check and make sure that construction crews weren’t cutting corners,” she said.

It’s been her love of learning and the challenge of biology that she’s enjoyed most.

“Every day something new is happening in biology,” she said. “History doesn’t change, it just repeats itself. I remember when we said we had 48 chromosomes, and now we have 46.”

She also says she will miss Saint Mary’s and her department. “It’s a fun department that helps each other,” she said, adding that she hopes to continue helping out at the university even in her retirement.

She would especially love to see a new science building constructed and had hoped it would occur before her retirement.

These days, she says she’s “slowing down,” which means she’s judging science fairs, serving as a chaplain for a group of married couples at her parish, attending a Bible study class and traveling for SMU’s high school PACC program and through her religious order.

She also hopes to visit Australia and New Zealand next year with her brother and his wife.

“I’m not watching soap operas,” she joked.≠

Dr. Martin Judd ■ After a 20-year career and an office on the fourth floor of Saint Mary’s Hall, Dr. Martin Judd, professor of business, has taken a lot of stairs during his career. There’s no need for regular StairMaster workouts.

Dr. Judd will pack up his office-with-a-view this spring. He and his wife plan to spend their retirement years in the San Francisco Bay area in California, nearer to their daughter.

Interviewed during a week of Winona temperatures hovering just below 0 degrees Fahrenheit, the temperature change seems welcome.

And, in truth, the majority of places Dr. Judd has called home have been in much warmer climates.

There was Canyon, Texas, where he earned his master’s degree from West Texas State University; Birmingham, Ala., where he worked as a senior economist at Southern Research Institute; Cookeville, Tenn., where he taught at Tennessee Technological University; and Saudi Arabia, where he worked as an economic consultant for the Arabian American Oil Company (ARAMCO).

So, the question has to be asked. What drives a man from a career with an oil company in Saudi Arabia to teaching in Minnesota?

Dr. Judd explained that when he taught economics courses for the University of Maryland at Wheelus Air Base, Libya, he discovered he liked it.

After working with ARAMCO 14 years in Saudi Arabia, Dr. Judd said he and his wife decided to relocate to the United States. Their daughter was finishing high school and about to go off to college and the timing was right to return and join her.

After seeing an ad in the Chronicle of Higher Education for an economics and international business instructor for Saint Mary’s, Dr. Judd applied.

Economics and international business were topics of which he had first-hand knowledge.

The couple pondered, back then, what life in Minnesota would be like. “We didn’t want to be in the desert,” he said. “We’d had enough of that. We wanted the four seasons, and this qualifies for sure.”

Dr. Judd had also lived in Hanover, N.H., where he obtained his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College — another smaller liberal arts college, that happened to be at the same latitude as Saint Mary’s.

“I had to just remember my winters as a student to know what winters in Minnesota would be like,” he said, adding with a sly smile, “The difference is that as a student, I didn’t have to worry about getting the car started or shoveling the driveway.”

And, during his first year at Saint Mary’s, Minnesota was hit with the record-breaking Halloween blizzard of 1991, which dropped 28.4 inches of snow on the Twin Cities area. “(Coming to work at Saint Mary’s) was a matter of practicality,” Dr. Judd said simply. “It seemed like a sensible thing to do, to seek a position in a small liberal arts college. The small class size and the interaction with students was appealing. I didn’t think coming here that it would be a job I would retire from, but in my defense, it’s been 20 years.”

But when Dr. Judd looked back on his tenure at Saint Mary’s, he called it a pleasant experience. He cited his positive and supportive colleagues, the high academic standards set forth by the university, and the variety of courses he’s been able to teach.

“Through discussions, we are able to encourage good teaching practices,” he said. “We’ve changed through the years as the world has changed.”

When Dr. Judd thinks of how he hopes students remember him, several descriptions come to mind: • exacting but fair; • having a knowledge of the outside world and being able to integrate real-world experiences into the classroom; • well organized; and • challenging, “but that’s partly because I teach economics; it’s not the friendliest of courses,” he said with a smile.≠

Dr. Marilyn Frost ■ This summer — when school supplies appear on store shelves and back-to-school advertisements hit the mail, Dr. Marilyn Frost (formerly Solberg) will be undoubtedly be going through withdrawal.

“It will be the first fall since I was 5 years old that I don’t go to school,” she said. “My family used to joke that they sent me to first grade and I never came back.”

Dr. Frost, who will retire this May from her position as vice president for academic affairs, has devoted her life and her career to teaching and learning.

It was a career that was, in part, initially directed by the roles of women in the ’60s.

“First of all, given my age and life context, teaching was a good career for women,” she said. “I thought initially I would teach English in high school and realized that when I took psychology, I loved it and I announced that I would go to grad school to become a college professor. That was a little more adventurous on my part.”

She pursued her Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she had a National Institute of Mental Health Fellowship and served as a teaching assistant. “I realized that I really enjoyed teaching and I that I didn’t want to teach at an extremely large university because students didn’t know professors. I wanted to teach somewhere where I would have a direct connection with students.”

It was this desire that brought her to Saint Mary’s. “I came to Saint Mary’s because of its size, its value system and because of its care and concern for students and for high-quality psychology,” she said.

“It was a discipline I loved and a model of engagement with students that I found enriching and affirming.”

She started at Saint Mary’s in the fall of 1969 at the idealistic age of 22.

“We were young and pushing the envelope on things,” she admitted.

It was a tumultuous time on campus — and in the nation. Ironically, the same year Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon, the first group of undergraduate women was housed on the Saint Mary’s campus.

Dr. Frost remembers that the student newspaper’s focus at the time wasn’t on going co-ed but on the brand new college center (now the Toner Student Center), which changed the flow of the campus, especially since the cafeteria had a new location. “Not only were there women on campus, but men had to put on their shoes and socks to go to breakfast,” she said.

It was a time for questioning authority, as antiestablishment feelings were expressed, anti-war sentiment grew and women were finding their place in the world.

“I was very involved because I wasn’t all that far from their ages,” Dr. Frost said — especially about the coeducational transition. “We didn’t want to be a men’s college with women students.”

Another highlight of Dr. Frost’s early years at Saint Mary’s was getting to know the Brothers. “It was about the Brothers and their devotion for our students,” she said.

When she thinks about all the changes she’s seen at Saint Mary’s, the physical changes come immediately to mind. On the Winona campus, she saw the Performance Center built, the addition to the library constructed and the ice rink move from outdoors to “the bubble” and then to the current ice arena. On the Minneapolis campus, Frost remembers how the Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs used to have to share a portion of a floor; now the Twin Cities campus occupies five buildings.

“It’s been very gratifying to see where things have gone up there, and how facilities enhanced the quality of education and the quality of campus life here for all of us,” she said.

The makeup of students has changed, and the overall size of the university has grown tremendously. Dr. Frost has also gotten to a point in her career where she’s taught both parents and their children.

“Things at Saint Mary’s have changed, but the essence of Saint Mary’s, for me hasn’t changed,” she said. “What hasn’t changed is the rigorous and challenging education, our concern for students and the quality of our student-faculty interaction. There is a constancy undergirding it. I tell alumni parents, ‘What you loved at Saint Mary’s hasn’t changed.’

“I will miss my colleagues and the community and the transformation students make from when they start to the point where they walk across the stage at commencement. It’s very meaningful to be part of people’s journeys. It’s been a privilege to be involved with our students at a time in their lives when there are so many possibilities.”

Dr. Frost laughs when she’s asked about her plans for retirement. “Those will be formulated beginning June 1. I’m planning to see my own home more in the daylight. I’m not going anywhere. I will still be part of the Saint Mary’s community, only now I’ll be able to participate on a volunteer basis.”≠

Don Truhlar ’65 Don Truhlar ’65 switched his major at Saint Mary’s from physics to chemistry because, he said, “The most exciting science on campus” was in carbene research. Thirty years later, he coauthored a book on carbene and then wrote two more books on carbene chemistry in ’02-03. He has been on the faculty of the University of Minnesota since 1969 and is currently Regents Professor of Chemistry, Chemical Physics Nanoparticle Science and Engineering and Scientific Computation. He has authored more than 700 journal articles, more than 70 book chapters and has edited or co-edited 13 books.

Don also serves as an associate editor for the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Fellow of the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute and Computer Physics Communications editor and has received countless awards for his research.

LASALLIAN SERVICE

Mary Lou (Black ’76) Scheid It has been the lifelong goal of Mary Lou (Black ’76) Scheid and her husband Stephen Scheid ’76 to volunteer in a Third World country after they retired. Sadly, because of Stephen’s sudden and untimely death, they were unable to carry out their dream together. Undaunted, Mary Lou and her 11-year-old son studied Spanish and moved to Antigua, Guatemala. For three years, Mary Lou served as a surgical nurse and Spanish interpreter. She worked with teams of doctors from the United States, Europe and Canada on a variety of surgeries including orthopedic, cleft lip and palate, hysterectomies and cataract. Mary Lou returned to the United States a few years ago but continues to make several trips each year back to Guatemala with medical teams from the Twin Cities.

LASALLIAN SERVICE

James ’91 and Molly (Crosby ’91) Cave Together, James ’91 and Molly (Crosby ’91) Cave are living examples of Lasallian service. Molly, a social worker, community volunteer and advocate for women, uses love and compassion to advocate for and empower people in the Twin Cities. Molly was also instrumental in the St. Paul Paint the Pavement program, which promotes community building and “peacemaking” through creating neighborhood art. James is a Catholic school teacher and a coach who is a leader and national speaker on social justice, genocide, and the Rwandan genocide. James leads educational trips for high school students to Rwanda annually. Recently the Caves invited a young man from Rwanda into their home so he could attend junior and senior high school in the United States. The Caves practice what they preach, and live the lives that most others only talk about.

Rob Figliulo ’76 Rob Figliulo ’76 is a lifelong supporter of Saint Mary’s University. He is a former member and chairman of the SMU Board of Trustees and is currently serving as chair of the Kabara Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies Advisory Board. He has also served as an active parent while several of his children attended Saint Mary’s. Rob has demonstrated his commitment and philanthropy to the university. He is an enthusiastic supporter of SMU who has been generous with his time, talent and financial contributions.

Alumni Board active with diverse initiatives on two campuses As the president of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, I am honored to share the great works that the board has undertaken this past year.

The board is comprised of 19 alumni from both the undergraduate and graduate programs of the university.

Together, the board represents the more than Nate Semsch ’04 30,000 alumni Saint Mary’s University of our Alumni Board President university. This is no small task, but one that each board member is very passionate about.

The board spent this past year continuing and strengthening our ongoing initiatives. This very diverse list hits the core of what the mission of Saint Mary’s is all about. Beyond assisting with recruiting and fundraising efforts, we have also been a part of some amazing service opportunities, have recognized our fallen alumni, and continuously support our alumni and students through networking services and events.

This past fall we organized the second annual Lasallian Day of Service.

More than 50 alumni, family and friends volunteered their time and talents to Feed My Starving Children in Chaska, Project Pride in Living in Minneapolis, Grace Place in Winona, and St. Procopius School in Chicagoland.

These volunteers represented our alma mater’s Lasallian heritage beautifully in their actions, and I wish to personally thank each of them for their participation. Please be sure to mark your calendars for the 2011 Lasallian Day of Service, which will take place on Oct. 22. Each Veteran’s Day the university recognizes the sacrifices of military personnel by hosting a program at the Veteran’s Memorial on the Winona campus. This year the program included a color guard, comprised of university staff and students, and an invocation from Dennis Gallagher (dean of Campus Ministry). In a particularly moving tribute, the names of our Saint Mary’s alums who have died in service were read aloud while a student played Taps.

Lasallian Day of Service On Oct. 23, 2010, the Saint Mary’s University Alumni Association and its Board of Directors sponsored the second annual “Lasallian Day of Service.” Groups of alumni and friends located in the Twin Cities, Chicago and Winona participated in this day of volunteer service.

Thanks go to everyone who made this day possible – the dedicated organizers, the organizations alums worked with, and most importantly, the people who spent the day honoring Saint Mary’s Lasallian mission by giving back. Volunteers helped at Feed my Starving Children in Chanhassen, Minn.; St. Procopius School in Chicago; Grace Place in Winona; Project for Pride in Living in the Twin Cities; and at both the San Miguel Schools in Chicago, the Back of the Yards Campus and the Gary Comer Campus.

Young Alumni Weekend draws more than 200 More than 200 young alumni, family and friends returned to campus during Young Alumni Weekend Sept. 10-12.

On Friday, alums had the opportunity to speak in classrooms or to groups of students; a welcome reception reunited faculty and staff with young alums; and an outing at Jefferson Pub and Grill in downtown Winona brought former classmates from the class of 2005 together for an evening of reminiscing.

On Saturday, the day began with a reunion brunch. The class of 2005 held an anniversary lunch at the campus gazebo, and everyone was invited out to the Challenge Ropes Course, to the Hike for Hunger or to swing dance lessons offered by the SMU Ballroom Dance Club.

Approximately 25 people participated in the “Hike for Hunger” event, which raised money, food and awareness for Winona Volunteer Services.

The medallion hunt was a hot competition throughout the weekend. Sara Spiess ’06 finally found the sought-after piece of metal in the Common Room of Saint Mary’s Hall.

Saturday evening concluded with an anniversary dinner for the class of 2000 at Jefferson Pub and Grill, during which the Class of 2000 Scholarship was announced. Later that evening “Double Ds Included” — a band whose members mainly consist of Saint Mary’s young alumni and current SMU students — took to the stage to entertain more than 150 young alumni and guests.

And on Sunday, guests enjoyed a barbecue picnic lunch before saying goodbye to Terrace Heights.

Mark your calendars for next Sept. 9-11, when Saint Mary’s invites all young alumni back to campus once again for a fun-filled weekend of events. You provide the memories, and we’ll take care of the rest.≠

The 2011 Saint Mary’s University Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony promises to be a family affair.

Nate DeMars ’98 and Frank Savino ’98 were more than linemates for the Saint Mary’s University men’s hockey team for four years — they were like inseparable brothers.

Add to that the third member of this year’s Class of 2011 inductee, John Redpath ’80, and the familial ties become even greater — after all, Redpath was not only a standout for the Saint Mary’s hockey teams of the late ’70s, but he’s also DeMars’ uncle.

In their four years together, Savino and DeMars were one of the most prolific, goal-scoring duos in the country. The two combined for a jaw-dropping 377 points and rank second (DeMars) and third (Savino) to the great Andre Nate DeMars ’98 Beaulieu ’65 in career points.

A four-year letterwinner, Savino was named to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team in each of his four years as a Cardinal.

Savino’s junior year was one for the record books, as he compiled 40 goals and 62 points — both ranked No. 5 all-time in the program’s history — while earning MIAC Player of the Year and First-Team All-American honors. In his four Frank Savino ’98 years at SMU, Savino ranks No. 3 all-time in career goals (111) and career points (111).

And as impressive as Savino’s numbers were, his four-year linemate’s were equally as impressive.

Also a four-year letterwinner, DeMars earned All-MIAC FirstTeam honors three times, while also being named Second Team AllAmerican during his junior season, when he posted 40 assists — the John Redpath ’80 fourth-best single-season assist total in program history — and finished a point behind Savino with 61. DeMars closed out his collegiate career as SMU’s all-time assist leader (108), while ranking second in career points (189) and fifth in career goals (81).

Not to be outdone by his nephew, Redpath made a name for himself, earning First-Team All-MIAC honors in both his junior and senior seasons, while also being named an NAIA First-Team All-American during his senior season.

Redpath, a four-year letterwinner, finished among the top 20 in SMU history in single-season goals (23) and points (51).≠

Robert Schwendau, Chicago, retired in December 2009, after 51 years in Catholic education, the past six years as an academic advisor at Saint Xavier University, Chicago. He lives in a community with the Christian Brothers near DeLaSalle, Chicago.

1959 Dr. Dennis McGuire, Quincy, Ill., completed training with H&R Block and is beginning a new career as a tax return preparer.

Dr. John Schultz, Lake Geneva, Wis., is in his seventh year as an adjunct professor at Marquette University School of Dentistry.

He is a part-time instructor in

General Dental Services at the South Side Dental Clinic, which treats patients in low income and underserved areas. Students are exposed to community dentistry, and in many instances it is their first general practice experience.

1960 Amadeo Lazatin, Ventura, Calif., works part-time as a real estate broker. He and his wife, Lourdes, are semi-retired and enjoying life.

1961 Arthur Clark, Raleigh, N.C., volunteered to teach two short courses in 2010 for the Encore (elderhostel-type) Program at North Carolina State University, on Walker Percy’s The Moviegoer and James Joyce’s Dubliners, and he is now planning a course on Flannery O’Connor’s life and stories for fall 2011. Teaching these courses for such highly motivated, talented retirees has been rewarding for him, while the trip to Georgia represents one of the top priorities on his bucket list. He retired in 2009 after nearly 50 years in various fields of education.

Giles Wilborn, Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich., works for Cass Tech High School in Detroit. His son, Dane, graduated in May 2010 from Arizona State University, and his wife, Jacqueline, retired from teaching in June 2010.

1962 Frank Boler, Kansas City, Mo., sang in Hallelujah Flash Mob, at Crown Center in Kansas City on Dec. 19, 2010. He sings at Sunday Mass at Visitation Parish and for special events at the Cathedral.

Dr. James Murray M’68, Forest Park, Ill., was appointed Visitor (coordinator) of the Quecumque Club, which is an organization of Christian Brothers and former Christian Brothers. Nearly all members are Saint Mary’s graduates.

1964 James Allaire, Newtonville, Mass., published a mystery novel titled “Costly Grace.”

Dan Finn, Mt. Prospect, Ill., sold his insurance agency and retired after 46 years. He and his wife, Bea (Liske CST’64), enjoy their six grandchildren and anticipate traveling.

1968 Kenneth Gieske, Sauk Centre, Minn., retired after teaching 38 years at DeLaSalle High School in Minneapolis. He looks forward to living closer to and spending more time with family.

Don Stevens, Sioux City, Iowa, has become the executive director of Trinity Heights in Sioux City. He retired from serving as the postmaster of Sioux City, and spent 10 years as the vice president of Human Resources and Risk Management for the Jacobson Company in Des Moines. 1969 Hubert Grogan, Sioux Falls, S.D., retired from the Minnehaha County Human Services Department after 29 years. In June 2010 he began working with Veterans Affairs as a homeless outreach social worker.

Don Nitti, Winona, is Winona Cotter High School’s math team coach and longtime mathematics teacher at Cotter and St. Stanislaus Elementary School.

He was inducted into the Minnesota State High School Mathematics League Hall of Fame on July 30, 2010.

Joseph Wirtz, Wake Forest, N.C., and his wife, Theresa (Ipsen CST’69), spent the better part of the past 10 years traveling the country in their recreational vehicle but have now settled in Wake Forest.

Thomas Kilbride, Rock Island, Ill., was unanimously elected as Chief Justice by the Illinois Supreme Court.

Saint Mary’s mourns loss of freshman Millie Harrison Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota mourned the loss of freshman Millie Harrison, who died unexpectedly Saturday, April 2, on campus, due to natural causes.

Harrison, 19, of Colorado Springs, Colo., was known as an outgoing and charismatic student on the Saint Mary’s campus. A theatre major studying stage management and communications, she was active with theatre productions and was a member of the student Second Page Comedy Troupe. She also served as an Admission Ambassador and played an active role with KSMR, the campus radio station.

“It is heartbreaking to see a young person, so filled with spirit, taken from us too soon,” said Brother William Mann, Saint Mary’s president. “We join together in gratitude for the gift of life Millie so freely shared, and in remembrance of the joy and impact of her life. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Millie’s family and friends as we all try to come to terms with such a tremendous loss.”

Gary Diomandes, professor of theatre and dance, said, “Millie was an excellent student. She worked hard and earned top-notch grades. But the best thing about her was her sense of humor and fun-loving personality.

She instantly made friends; everyone who met her, adored her.”

“She was a theatre major and wanted to be a stage manager,” Diomandes said. “She was very talented in the technical aspects, and she was interested in every aspect of theatre. She was good at everything she tried.”

Diomandes said Harrison was the production stage manager for a planned performance of student-produced one-act plays on April 2. “We canceled that performance, but (her classmates) all wanted to do it (for her) on (on April 3) as scheduled.”

Several hundred students attended a prayer service and a memorial service on campus. Her enduring spirit will live on through the many lives she touched in such a short time at Saint Mary’s.≠

Brother Richard Gerlach, Saint Mary’s oldest alum, dies at 96 Brother Richard Gerlach (Hyacinth Richard), FSC — a 1935 alumnus of Saint Mary’s University and the oldest Christian Brother in the Midwest District — passed away Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010 at St. Anne Extended Healthcare in Winona, Minn.

On his birthday, Dec. 25, he would have turned 97.

He was born Raymond Gerlach in St. Paul to William Gerlach and Margaret (Hechtl) Gerlach. He joined the Brother Richard Christian Brothers in 1931 Gerlach and graduated from Saint Mary’s in 1935, just two years after the Brothers assumed administration of the college. He went on to earn his master’s degree from St. Louis University in 1940. From there he served as registrar at Saint Mary’s from 1940 to 1944 before beginning teaching.

Throughout his career, Brother Richard taught history, and he also served as principal at a number of schools in Appleton, Wis.; St. Paul; Evanston, Ill.; Memphis, Tenn.; and St. Louis, Mo. Although he enjoyed his work in administration, Brother Richard said his heart always remained in the classroom, where he felt he could best help students. In 1968, he returned to Saint Mary’s, and although he retired in 1979, he continued teaching part-time for many years until the mid’90s.

Chuck Bolton ’80 remembers Brother Richard as a smart, kind and compassionate man as well as an excellent listener and fine teacher. “I enjoyed him and his classes very much as I loved history, and he was a repository of history,” he said. “I remember he would make time to talk in his office with students. He was a wealth of information, was interesting and had a great sense of humor and a hearty laugh. He made me feel very comfortable as a 19-year-old college student. We all need those connections throughout our lives, but particularly when we’re college freshmen or sophomores and still finding our academic bearings. I think the ultimate question to ask about people in our lives is, ‘Does that person make my life better?’ About Brother Richard, it was an emphatic ‘YES!’ for me.”

Stephen King ’88 remembers Brother Richard as a staple at the Saint Mary’s outdoor pool between 1984-1988. “I was a student and stayed on campus in the summers to work as the lifeguard at the old outdoor pool that was located where the hockey arena is today,” he said, reflecting on the pool’s most loyal customer, Brother Richard. “He had the best tan west of the Mississippi,” King said.

“Due to the age of the pool and it’s constantly failing sand filtering system, I fought each week to keep the water from turning a cloudy green,” King also remembers. “As I

struggled with the pool vacuum, pH, and filter system throughout the day, Brother Richard would throw brief encouraging words my direction. On the days that the pool was at its worst I would consult the maintenance staff and we would wonder how we could keep the pool going. Every conversation about closing the pool ended with a statement from one of us that Brother Richard would have none of this talk about closing the pool.

“I have fond memories of my best swimming pool customer,” he said, adding with a joke, “I can only speculate that the effort I spent keeping Brother Richard’s cement pond open may have resulted in a better grade in his class … but who knows? “ Brother Richard celebrated his 79th anniversary as a Christian Brother in August 2010. An ardent reader, he was also an avid bridge player and was frequently seen with his signature pipe. He attended the SMU Homecoming events every year, including this past June, when he celebrated his 75th class reunion.

Brother Richard’s funeral was held Monday, Jan. 3, at the Saint Thomas More Chapel on Saint Mary’s Winona campus.

Survivors include several nephews and the community of Christian Brothers at Saint Mary’s University.

“The Saint Mary’s community joins me in mourning the loss of a lifelong educator, an inspirational Christian Brother and a valued alum,” said Brother William. “We are all blessed for having known Brother Richard.”≠

Saint Mary’s University mourns the loss of Dr. Jon Kabara ’48, founder of Kabara Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies Dr. Jon J. Kabara, 84, of Galena, Ill., known worldwide in the medical community for his breakthrough research, died Thursday, March 24, at his home in Florida.

A 1948 graduate of Saint Mary’s University, Dr. Kabara dedicated his life to medical research. He served as a professor at the University of Detroit and later Michigan State University for more than 30 years, and in 1969, he helped establish the first affiliated school of osteopathic medicine at Michigan State. An expert in the field of dietary fats and oils, Dr. Kabara was awarded more than 16 U.S. and foreign patents and is credited with more than 200 publications, including eight books.

Dr. Kabara earned a career full of impressive titles such as “International Man of the Year,” as well as listings in “Leaders in American Science” and “American Men in Science.” His life-long passion for science and entrepreneurship led his company, Med-Chem Labs Inc., to the successful creation of Lauricidin, a science-based nutritional supplement for better health and self-healing.

In 2005, Dr. Kabara and his wife, Betty, made a transformational gift to establish the Kabara Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies at Saint Mary’s University. The Kabaras’ goal has been to incite a passion for entrepreneurial spirit in students, no matter their area of study, and to recognize the importance of entrepreneurship in society. Through the Institute, students at Saint Mary’s have heard success stories of alumni entrepreneurs and nationally known speakers, taken tours of various businesses, competed in business plan competitions, and worked toward the future creation of their own businesses through the assistance of a supportive entrepreneurial university community.

“Saint Mary’s University is proud to call Dr. Jon Kabara one of our own,” said Brother William Mann, president. “Dr. Kabara provided Saint Mary’s with an opportunity to inspire and educate students — who one day dream of starting their own businesses — through the establishment of the Kabara Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies. Jon’s legacy will continue to shape the university’s commitment to innovation and entrepreneurship, and for this we are forever grateful.”

Robert Figliulo ’76, chair of the Kabara Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies Advisory Board, said Dr. Kabara was “a dear friend, whose radiant smile and character will be greatly missed by those he impacted not only at the university, but across the world. Saint Mary’s students are blessed to have so many

alumni with unique entrepreneurial experience. Jon wanted to share that experience with as many of our students as possible.

In 2008, Saint Mary’s University awarded Dr. Kabara with an honorary Doctorate of Ethical Leadership. In 1998, Dr. Kabara received the Distinguished Alumni award and in 1970, he was the recipient of the Bishop Patrick R. Heffron award for service to the university.

Dr. Kabara once shared this advice with Saint Mary’s students: “Make ‘ethical business’ more than an oxymoron term. As leaders for the next generation, our country/world needs your special talents and efforts to help form a truly peaceful global economy.”

Dr. Kabara also encouraged students to have a passion for what they do. “My final piece of advice is this secret: If you can dream it, you can make it happen. So dream big.”

Saint Mary’s University extends its thoughts and prayers to Betty Kabara and the entire Kabara family. A daughter, Sheila Kabara Howell, is a 1975 Saint Mary’s alum.≠

I am Saint Mary’s Will Jones M’11 is living proof that education changes lives William “Will” Jones’ intriguing southern accent gets a little thicker as he talks about his hometown, Kensee Hollow, in the Appalachian region of Kentucky.

Only in Kensee Hollow, it’s properly pronounced, “Kensee HOLLER,” he explains with a laugh.

His parents, both eighth-grade dropouts who struggled harder than most to provide for their family, began telling Jones when he was only 8 years old that he would go to college.

Education, says Jones — who will graduate this spring (“God willing” he jokes) from SMU’s M.A. in Philanthropy and Development program — not only changed his life, it gave him a life.

“My family was very poor,” Jones said. “My mom was 13 when she got married, 15 when she had me. I was the first child for my parents, who were both eighth-grade dropouts. My mom dropped out of school to get married, and my dad dropped out to start working in the coal mines to support his family.”

Jones details how the family’s drinking water came from a creek “out back.”

His whole future changed, he said, when his parents began instilling in him that he would go to college. It wasn’t just a dream, or even a hopeful prediction, it was a given that education would be Jones’ key to a better life.

“As we’d be digging a new hole for a new outhouse, my dad would say, ‘College graduates have indoor plumbing.’

Sometimes we didn’t have a car, so we’d walk to town to — as my parents would say — to do our ‘tradin.’ My mom would say, ‘You know son, college graduates they have cars.’ ” Jones said people are sometimes shocked to hear that this “story” didn’t occur all that long ago. He is only 37 years old.

“People don’t realize there are still some very poor communities in the U.S., and I was part of that,” he said.

Although Jones’ father died of an unintentional drug overdose (another sad

side effect of the socioeconomics of Appalachia), he lived to see his eldest son graduate from Berea College. “(Berea College) is a known entity in Appalachia,” Jones said. “If you grow up poor, that’s probably the college that you’ll take a look at.” Berea charges no tuition and admits only academically promising students, primarily from Appalachia, who have limited economic resources.

With his newfound degree in political science, Jones went back home to the mountains to begin a community development program called “Food for Thought.” Through the program, homegrown vegetables were given to seniors in exchange for sharing their histories. “Food for Thought” was in 13 school districts in Appalachia and drew some initial attention from national publications.

He also worked to construct homeless shelters, homes for families that needed housing, and a home for homeless teens in the Appalachian region before he began working with “Call to Renewal” in Washington, D.C. “Call to Renewal” is a national faithbased movement to overcome poverty and racism. As the managing director and national coordinator, Jones oversaw 24,000 individual members, 2,000 local partner organizations and more than a dozen national partners.

Jones then returned to his alma mater and headed the Berea Fund, a $4 million annual fund for unrestricted financial aid — a cause particularly dear to Jones’ heart.

From Berea, Jones worked as vice president for institutional advancement at Goshen College in Indiana. For the past eight months, he’s served as vice president for advancement at LaGrange College in Georgia.

“To have an opportunity to meet with prospective donors about endowing a scholarship is the most wonderful thing I could ever have a chance to do,” he said.

“I know the power of education, the impact, how it changes lives … It’s

magical. For me it’s a God moment, so I love those opportunities and that’s why I do what I do.”

More than 10 years ago, Jones heard about SMU’s Philanthropy and Development program through word of mouth.

He’s spent the past three years taking courses with cohort 18 in Winona, and will obtain his master’s degree this May. “(The program) has been lifechanging. I know when someone says that, people brush it off and think it’s overstated or oversold, but for me it really has been life-changing,” he said. “I’ve met amazing people who are doing meaningful and wonderful work across North America, and just being with those people has certainly changed my life and added a great deal of value to not only my professional work, but also to the quality of my personal life.”

Jones also emphasized the quality of the faculty and administration in the P&D program.

“They’re very knowledgeable about the field, and really willing to share and engage students in the program. They’re in there with us, shoulder to shoulder, with their sleeves rolled up, getting dirty with us. Gary Kelsey (the P&D program director) in particular has added a lot of value to my life. He cares for the students and has shown a great deal of care for me personally, and I will always be grateful.”

For Jones, education transformed every aspect of his life. “My college education gave me lifelong friends, meaningful work, a family, and helped prepare me for being a good husband and a good dad.” He and his wife, Amy, have been married for 10 years and have six children who range in age from 1 to 9.

His oldest two children are adopted and his middle two were added through the aid of fertility assistance; the last two were “surprises.”

“If you want to make God laugh, tell God your plans,” he said. “We have a very busy and full life, filled with joy.”≠ WWW.SMUMN.EDU/MAGAZINE

Look how far we’ve come These two pictures, unearthed while doing research for Saint Mary’s forthcoming Centennial book, depict the university’s “early years.” Dated around 1919, these photos show the Winona campus back when it was more farmland than campus. The entrance, once marked with a simple sign, showed the way to the school.

What started out as a school for young men in 1912, has grown into a diverse educational network extending from the undergraduate campus in Winona to our Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs (offering programs in Winona, the Twin Cities, Rochester, Apple Valley, Minnetonka, Oakdale and more than 100 off-campus sites throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin — and as far away as Kenya and Jamaica).
