Magazine changes reflect alumni growth and evolution Last spring I passed a milestone without even realizing it. I suddenly realized that I’ve been blessed to serve as the editor of this Saint Mary’s Magazine for 15 (now 16) issues, and time definitely flies when you’re having fun.

The people I’ve met along the way have been constant sources of inspiration. I can’t imagine a better job than being able to share these stories.

And I’m never at a loss for good news and good people to write about — alumni, students, faculty and staff.

And now the pool is getting even bigger.

Until now, we considered Saint Mary’s Magazine an undergraduate publication, primarily. We’ve always Deb Nahrgang found it important to let our Saint Mary’s Magazine editor readers know about the Saint Mary’s community as a whole —including our Twin Cities campus and locations in Apple Valley, Rochester, Minnetonka and Oakdale, as well as Jamaica and Nairobi.

But we’ve never quite transitioned this magazine into serving both our undergraduate alumni and our growing population of alumni from our Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs.

With our Centennial on the horizon, we thought it was time for our Saint Mary’s Magazine to recognize this growth and evolution. We’re now 40,000 alumni strong, and it’s time to celebrate the accomplishments of all of our Saint Mary’s family — and communicate to more of them as well.

Although it won’t happen all at once, we hope you’ll start to notice a change in this magazine as we expand to include more of our SMU community. With the addition of iModules’ new online alumni community and website (see pages 20-21), this fall you’ll be able to more easily update information, register for events and stay in touch with classmates. This new technology will allow us to better reach out to our SGPP alums as well. We may soon find our Class Notes section bursting at

the binding. But that’s a problem I welcome and encourage.

It only means we have more good news to share and a bigger network of alums and students accomplishing great feats worth touting on these pages. Rest assured that it doesn’t mean that the heart of this magazine will change.

There’s something special about Saint Mary’s — whether it was the close-knit connections with professors, the beauty of the campus or the convenience of the location, the inspiring curricula, or the friends you met along the way. It doesn’t matter if you’re a freshman or are earning your doctorate – we’re proud of you.

You might be amazed at where you’ll run into Saint Mary’s students and alumni. Read about just a few in this magazine: Judge Art Boylan ’71 presided over the mediation of the National Football League labor dispute; last spring the Chamber Singers performed on tour in Rome; David Spriegel ’12 uncovered some Lincoln documents during a summer internship; Cheyanne Boddicker — currently studying in SMU’s M.A. in Philanthropy and Development program — swam the English Channel this summer in an effort to raise funds and awareness for cancer research; computer science students are teaching students in Winona, Mo., about proper nutrition habits; and August Aleksy ’70 has owned a successful bookstore in Chicago for more than 20 years. Also, get a sneak peek at Saint Mary’s latest acquisition, the Harrington Mansion and Events Center in the Twin Cities.

These are just a few of the stories we hope you’ll enjoy in this magazine.

Also, get your first glimpse of what’s planned for Saint Mary’s celebration of our first century on pages 18-19. A full year of activities is planned in honor of the Centennial, so mark your calendars because you’re all invited! Don’t forget Ron Sowa’s contribution to campus radio station What a great treat to see a letter from Dr. David O. Thomas! On the short list of people who can be thanked for the very existence of the radio station on campus would be the ones you mentioned, Dave Thomas and Pat Callahan, but I would also make a very important addition, Ron Sowa, class of 1977.

When I started my freshman year at Saint Mary’s in 1974, my top interest was in the radio station. I was swept up in the post-Watergate broadcast journalism excitement that was going on at the time. The first person I met when I went to the radio station was a sophomore, Ron Sowa. Ron put in more hours caring and tending to the radio station than anyone I know.

Frankly the station’s carrier current signal did not sound all that great on the nice stereo systems most students had. An upgraded signal was needed. Dr. Thomas helped us students with his leadership in going from carrier current to cable FM to the 10-watt signal. We also worked the on-campus powers that be for funding — including a key vote in favor of the station for some one-time funding from the student council. At that time, that was something they did not usually do. But before all that got going, Ron Sowa was a one-man jack-of-all-trades who kept the lights on, the music playing and made sure there was something to build from. Thanks, Ron, for being a key link in the chain.

New residence hall offers a variety of living options to students In an ongoing commitment to provide outstanding residential experiences for students, Saint Mary's University will start construction this fall on an innovative residence hall at the Winona campus. The structure should be complete by August 2012, in time for the new academic year.

The Saint Mary’s Board of Trustees approved final plans and funding in late September for the four-story facility.

Located between the high ropes course and the New Village apartments, the new hall will be used by sophomore, junior and senior undergraduate students during the academic year and serve conferencing, camps and educational program needs in the summer.

The new residence hall will be the first on campus to offer a variety of housing options for students. It will feature single-occupancy suites, doubleoccupancy suites, and two-, three-, and four-bedroom apartments. Study rooms, lounges and a kitchen will bring students together in community and encourage collaborative learning.

The structure will have 141 beds in 45 units, with a private bath in each room. All rooms will be air-conditioned and wired for cable TV and Internet access.

Hay Dobbs — a Twin Cities architectural service firm — designed the hall with input from the Saint Mary's administration, student life staff, and admission staff. Student leaders were

consulted as well. General contractor for the project is Schwab, LLC, of Winona.≠

New trustees announced Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota has announced nine new members of its Board of Trustees.

• Mary Burrichter is finance director for the City of Winona; she previously served two terms on the board between 2000-2005 and 20052010.

• Brother J. William Clarey, FSC, ’62 is retired and currently resides in St. Paul.

• Marilyn Frost is retired from Saint Mary’s, where she most recently served as vice president for academic affairs and professor of psychology.

• Kaye O’Leary is principal of Tevera Consulting in Wayzata, Minn. She previously served on SMU’s Council of Regents.

• Brother Larry Schatz, FSC, is Visitor of the Midwest District of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in Burr Ridge, Ill. • Brother Robert Schieler, FSC, is general counselor with the Christian Brothers Conference in Washington, D.C. • Sandra (Kaiser CST’72) works with KJ Investment LLC in Chicago, Ill. • Michael Slaggie ’93 is president of Slaggie Capital Group of Winona.

• John Smarrelli Jr. is president of Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tenn.

They began their terms in May.

Saint Mary’s announces VP for academic affairs at the College Brother William has appointed Donna Aronson, Ph.D., as vice president for academic affairs for the undergraduate College.

The vice president is responsible for the academic programming, academic support service areas, faculty, and academic administrative staff of the undergraduate College at Saint Mary’s Winona campus.

Dr. Aronson, a native of Miami, Fla., comes to Saint Mary's from Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., where she served as special assistant to the president and vice president for academic affairs. She also spent 19 years as the dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Arsonson holds a B.F.A. in theatre-acting from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va., and an M.F.A. and Ph.D. in theatreacting and theatre from Florida State University.≠ WWW.SMUMN.EDU/MAGAZINE

Countdown to College Ninth-, 10th-graders prepare early to succeed in college Students from underserved communities get taste of college Nearly 50 ninth- and 10th-graders from the Midwest and Arizona got a head start on college success this summer, thanks to a first-of-its-kind program offered by Saint Mary’s.

From July 16 to Aug. 6, the university’s Countdown to College academic camp provided these students (and teachers from their home schools) with activities that will help them prepare for successful college experiences.

Countdown to College offers free classes, recreation, field trips, and room and board. The program boosts students’ skills, confidence and knowledge of how to negotiate the social and academic world of college.

Now in its second year, the program welcomes each class of students for four consecutive summers. Each year a new group of ninth-graders will be selected to participate in the Countdown to College experience, resulting in a total camp population of 100 ninth- through 12thgraders by 2013.

“To our knowledge, this is the first program in the nation that offers four consecutive years of early immersion in the college experience,” said Dr. Jane (Flynn CST’62) Anderson, Countdown to College director, who helped develop the program.

Why the program is needed Currently, about one of every two economically disadvantaged youth of color in the U.S. does not graduate from high school. Only a small percentage of Latinos and African Americans have college degrees. This is the reality even as demand is rising for better-educated workers who can function in today’s technologically complex global economy.

“Countdown to College is designed to ensure college success for first-generation students whose parents did not have the opportunity to go to college,” said Dr. Anderson. “First-generation students,

many of them students of color from underserved schools and communities, are at an economic and educational disadvantage when it comes to reaching and finishing college. These are all factors that are known to significantly limit their ability to attend and succeed in college.”

Countdown to College highlights Countdown to College seeks to break down the barriers to higher education by exposing youth directly to the college experience. The first summer, each day is filled with college orientation and classes in reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, math and leadership. Their schedules also include supervised study halls, academic contests, sports, recreation, and field trips. Other college preparation subjects, such as science, are added in subsequent years.

One of the most distinctive aspects of the program is that it includes a teacher or staff representative from each of the participating students’ schools.

They co-teach the classes alongside Saint Mary’s instructors. This helps prepare the university instructors to work with an increasingly diverse population of college students. In turn, the visiting teachers learn how to set up their students for success in college and how to help create a community of support around the students.

The participants in Countdown to College attend schools in the Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Racine, Chicago and Tucson metropolitan areas.

Preference is given to graduates of Saint Mary’s middle school partners in the NativityMiguel Network of Jesuit and Christian Brothers’ schools, which are located in those cities.

Countdown to College is funded for 2010-2013 by a generous donation from Jack and Mary Ann (Wera CST’64) Remick of Rochester, Minn., who are long-time supporters of Saint Mary’s University.

Mary Ann Remick is also the chairwoman of Saint Mary’s First-Generation Advisory Board and a member of the Saint Mary’s Board of Trustees.

Part of the broader ‘First-Generation Initiative’ Countdown to College is the foundation segment of Saint Mary’s broader FirstGeneration Initiative to improve college access and success.

“Countdown to College and our First-Generation Initiative reflect Saint Mary’s mission to make higher education accessible to learners, regardless of their financial situations,” said Brother William, president.

Countdown to College graduates will receive preferential consideration to participate in Saint Mary’s First-Generation Initiative program, which provides college scholarships and educational support to first-generation students who demonstrate financial need as well as leadership and academic potential. In 2010-11, 13 students received full to partial scholarships through the First-Generation Initiative. This fall SMU welcomes an additional 15 students on full to partial scholarships. These scholarships provide financial support for tuition, room and board, books, computer, spending money, and one semester of study abroad.

“Students participating in Countdown to College may potentially become part of Saint Mary’s FirstGeneration Initiative scholarship program, which would be a seamless continuation of support for these students,” said Brother Edmund Siderewicz, assistant to the president for First-Generation and Lasallian Initiatives. “Our goal is to provide full scholarships and opportunities for our First-Generation students – study abroad, internships, life to the fullest – because we know these students have the potential to accomplish great things.”≠ FALL 2011

Saint Mary’s Chamber Singers perform in Rome The SMU Chamber Singers performed in Rome as part of their spring 2011 Concert Tour. A highlight of the tour included the performance of two new compositions — by SMU music faculty — at St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican.

The 25-voice select ensemble is directed by Dr. Patrick M. O’Shea, associate professor of music.

Tour performances included the following liturgy and concert venues: • Parish of S. Giovanni Battista De La Salle • Basilica of St. Peter, Vatican • Collegio S. Giuseppe de Merode • Parish of Santa Susanna Repertoire included a cappella works by Palestrina, Monteverdi, Kevin Siegfried, Moses Hogan, and world premieres of “Preghiera Semplice” (Prayer of Saint Francis), composed by A. Eric Heukeshoven, and “O Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem,” composed by Dr. O’Shea especially for this tour.

Before departure, the Chamber Singers sang as the guest choir for Mass at Holy Name Cathedral, Chicago. Upon their return, they presented a free “Homecoming Concert” in Winona at the Chapel of Saint Mary of the Angels.

SMU student discovers unknown Lincoln documents Senior David Spriegel’s response to the question “What did you do over summer vacation?” is a little different than most college students’.

It’s a rare occurrence when a history student gets the opportunity to say they made national news during a summer internship — in a library.

Spriegel, of Gurnee, Ill., was in the second week of a summer internship at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Ill., when he discovered two original, previously unknown documents written in 1844 by an up-and-coming lawyer named Abraham Lincoln.

In late May, when Spriegel began to organize a 4-inch-tall stack of old documents in the Presidential Library’s Manuscripts Department, he noticed a small inscription on two of them: “The above memorandum is in the handwriting of Abraham Lincoln.

– M. Hay.” Milton Hay had clerked in the Stuart and Lincoln Law Office as a young man and would have recognized Lincoln’s script.

Hay’s notations seem to date from late in his life, perhaps the 1880s.

Spriegel called the discovery to the attention of his supervisor and David Spriegel is experts were pictured with the called upon to Lincoln documents. confirm Lincoln’s handwriting.

The two documents, bearing no other signature or date, are long lists of small parcels of land being bought and sold among a variety of early Springfield settlers. The papers lay among several land warrantees that had been donated to the library by a descendant of one of those settlers.

After some research, it was determined that the documents were part of the legal case Opdycke et al. v. Godfrey et al., in March 1844. The documents will be available this fall for viewing, alongside those from the 5,600 other Lincoln legal cases, at the Papers of Abraham Lincoln website, www.papersofabrahamlincoln.org.

Meanwhile, the two documents join 1,580 other original Abraham Lincoln manuscripts at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

“I never dreamed that my summer internship would bring me into direct contact with an original, previously unknown Lincoln document,” Spriegel said. “I’m happy that the discovery will increase our knowledge of Lincoln’s legacy.”≠

‘Gaslight’ celebrates 50th show This picture of Diane (Doubek ’81) Hazlett (from an undated archive photo) represents a wonderful campus tradition that dates back to May 1963. Gaslight is a musical variety show that is presented by the senior class. The location of Gaslight has changed venues over the years, starting out in the lower Skemp Hall gymnasium, moving to the current gymnasium, and then relocating to the Toner Center Dining Room in 1973, where it has stayed. The university will celebrate Gaslight’s 50th show on April 20-21, 2012. Plans include a Saturday evening reception and an alumni show of Gaslight’s different eras. Taylor Richmond Benefit More than 660 people attended Saint Mary’s University’s 11th annual Taylor Richmond Benefit Dance on March 26. Proceeds from the dance — and a silent auction held on campus — raised more than $13,500 for this year’s beneficiary, Tony Grathen, a 7-year-old boy who was diagnosed with rhabdomysarcoma cancer in April 2010.

Grathen is the step-grandson of Susan (Schlink CST’69) Edel, who served as the registrar at Saint Mary’s Winona campus.≠

Welcome to Cardinal Legacy students Saint Mary’s extends a special welcome to our Cardinal Legacy students. These are incoming new students whose parents also attended or graduated from Saint Mary’s. SGPP teacher named president of Association of Fundraising Professionals Andrew Watt took has been named president and chief executive officer of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the professional association of individuals responsible for generating philanthropic support for nonprofit organizations.

AFP is the largest community of fundraising professionals in the world and has 30,000 members in more than 200 chapters.

Watt — who teaches in Saint Mary’s M.A. in Philanthropy and Development program — joined AFP as vice president for international development in 2006 and was promoted to chief programs officer in 2008, where he led the Membership and Professional Advancement Divisions of AFP. He also Andrew Watt served on the AFP Executive Team that was responsible for the dayto-day operational decisions of the association.

From 1993-2005, he was employed by the Institute of Fundraising in the United Kingdom, a professional membership organization for fundraising professionals. He served in several capacities there, ultimately as deputy chief executive. In 2006, Watt was made an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Fundraising in recognition of his extraordinary service to the profession.

He has been a strong proponent of the value of the nonprofit community and fundraising throughout his career.

Viewing nonprofits as a critical interface between the public and government, Watt has long emphasized the importance of forging strong consensus-based coalitions both within the philanthropic community and between the public and private sectors that demonstrate the value and impact of charities and their work.

Pathways Program serves non-traditional students in a new way The Pathways Program, a new venture of the Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs (SGPP), serves the Saint Mary’s mission by encouraging students to find their degree pathway, whether it be from associate to bachelor or bachelor to master.

The program provides a new focus on specific professional career pathways. Saint Mary’s has worked to enhance existing partnerships with area community colleges to encourage students to complete their associate’s degree and move into their pathway at Saint Mary’s University. Students will have access to valuable networking and professional development opportunities through the Pathways Program.

Community colleges currently partnering with Saint Mary’s to pilot the program include Dakota County Technical College, Inver Hills Community College, and Rochester Community and Technical College. By strengthening the partnership with existing partners, Saint Mary’s hopes to bring the Pathways Program to a broader audience.

The program provides a way for nontraditional students seeking a fouryear degree to obtain their degree — at a considerable tuition discount — while continuing to work. Pathways also guides students into early career paths where they can start work in a field of interest and develop professional skills and career development in tandem with their education.

Students in the Pathways Program will also have the opportunity to earn credits toward a master’s degree — while in their bachelor’s program — through a clearly articulated pathway, should they choose to do so.

“We’re excited to build on what we’ve already been doing with community colleges by offering these students the opportunity to sign on for a fouryear degree when they begin their twoyear degree,” said Dr. Marcel Dumestre, vice president for the Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs.

“The Pathways Program allows us to further our mission in a new way and serve a new population.”≠

Saint Mary’s faculty member Dr. David Thompson named Administrator of the Year The National Association of Educational Office Professionals has announced that Dr. David D. Thompson, Education Administration Licensure program assistant professor, has been selected as the NAEOP Administrator of the Year for 2011. He is the 38th administrator to be honored and the first administrator from Minnesota. Thompson also serves as superintendent of the Stewartville Public Schools.

Selection criteria included experience in education, academic background, leadership and membership in professional organizations, personal contribution and achievements in education plus his support of the local, state and national educational office professionals associations. Dr. Thompson’s rating by each of the judges in every area was superior.

He was lauded by the Minnesota Association of Educational Office Professionals on the nomination form for his integrity, dedication, humility, openness, creativity, fairness, assertiveness, and sense of humor. He was also cited for his support of continuing education and professional development of all educational office professionals.

Dr. Thompson was honored at the NAEOP Conference in Charleston, S.C. at the annual awards luncheon.≠

Hendrickson Forum recognizes ethical leaders, discusses entrepreneurial approaches to poverty On April 20, the Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership hosted its fourth annual forum titled, “Social Capitalism: An ‘App’ to Fight Poverty.” Jacqueline Novogratz, CEO of Acumen Fund and the author of The Blue Sweater, discussed her entrepreneurial approaches to global poverty with more than 300 guests.

Novogratz shared three insights: • Dignity is more important to the human spirit than wealth; • Traditional charity and aid too often create dependence, which is the opposite of dignity; and • We need different systems than what we've had.

“The market ideology of the first 10 years of the 21st century did lift almost 500 million people out of poverty,” she told the crowd. “It also left a world where 2 percent of us own 50 percent of the wealth and 50 percent own less than 1 percent of the wealth.” She urged the audience to remember how “interconnected we are as a world and that our action — and our inaction

— can impact people we might never know or never meet.”

The recipient of this year’s Hendrickson Medal for Ethical Leadership was Richard Davis, chairman, president and chief executive officer of U.S. Bancorp. Davis was recognized for his leadership during a time when being a conservative and carefully managed financial institution was not always fashionable, as well as for his outstanding leadership during the ensuing economic decline.

The Hendrickson Forum seminar, “Microfinance in the Urban Core” was held just prior to the Hendrickson Forum. More than 80 people attended the seminar and enjoyed a lively discussion on the local microfinance situation by distinguished panelists. Both events took place at the Harrington Mansion and Events Center (formerly the Shrine Center).

‘Under-Told Stories’ reports from India, Pakistan, Africa Conferences planned for November in Twin Cities, Winona

Fred de Sam Lazaro, director of “The Under-Told Stories Project” at Saint Mary’s University, and Nikki See, producer, recently aired noteworthy reports on PBS NewsHour and Religion and Ethics Newsweekly.

In May, de Sam Lazaro and See reported from India on a story that examined the ancient practice of yoga being introduced into India’s prison system. As a part of their social entrepreneurship coverage, the team reported on a Pakistani program that gives small business loans to needy women that enable them to escape generational poverty. In June, they reported from Ghana, a West African nation that is making progress in ethical leadership, an inclusive economy and a vibrant, free press. In July, they investigated an organization working to abandon female circumcision in Senegal, Africa, a deeply rooted practice across a number of countries in Africa and the Middle East.

The UTS team traveled to Brazil in a PBS partnership with National Geographic to cover issues on population and migration. UTS reports can be viewed at www.undertoldstories.org.

In November, Saint Mary’s University will welcome the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, in partnership with the Under-Told Stories Project, for conferences on the Twin Cities and Winona campuses. The conference will address global food security and provide an opportunity for Fred de Sam Lazaro to present in select classrooms. The Twin Cities event is Nov. 16 and the Winona event is Nov. 17.

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting is an educational partner of the Under-Told Stories Project and Saint Mary’s University. The center is an innovative non-profit leader in supporting the independent international journalism that U.S. media organizations are increasingly less willing to undertake. 2011 SMU undergrads celebrate at their commencement ceremony in Winona.

Saint Mary’s awards more than 2,000 degrees in last fiscal year During the fiscal year of June 1, 2010 through May 31, 2011, Saint Mary’s University awarded 2,032 degrees and certificates to 2,013 graduates in a total of 12 commencement ceremonies — three in Winona, seven in the Twin Cities, one in Nairobi and one in Jamaica. This brings the Saint Mary’s alumni total to more than 40,000.

On May 14, the Winona campus of Saint Mary’s University hosted two commencement ceremonies to mark the end of the academic year.

The Winona campus undergraduate commencement included student perspectives by this year’s Outstanding Male and Female Seniors, Sean Ohl of Bloomington, Minn. and Hilary Ethen of White Bear Lake, Minn. In addition, the university recognized long-time supporters Jack and Mary Ann (Wera CST’64) Remick of Rochester, Minn., with honorary degrees.

The commencement ceremony of the Winona campus Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs included student perspectives by Leah Hover-Preiss, M.Ed. in Teaching and Learning, from Wisconsin Dells, Wis.; and Kevin Mahoney, M.A. in Instruction, from Tujunga, Calif.

Saint Mary’s Nairobi campus hosted its commencement ceremony on April 30, and the Twin Cities campus conducted its summer commencement ceremonies on June 5.

Although commencement ceremonies in Jamaica are held in September, seven students participated in the Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs commencement ceremony in Winona this past spring. SMU partners with Blackboard Mobile to launch new ‘app’ Saint Mary’s is currently in the process of building an app for mobile phones as one more way to connect with students, alumni and friends.

The app will be built in conjunction with Blackboard Mobile and allows another access point for those connected to Saint Mary’s.

Students, alumni and friends of SMU will be able to check in on happenings around the university via a news and events feature.

They will also be able to easily view course schedules and descriptions, take a virtual tour of the campuses, check out the latest sports scores and look up important contact information.

Centennial will celebrate ‘A Transforming Heritage’ Plans for the celebration of the century are well underway, and a full year-long schedule of events — in multiple locations across the U.S. — means there’s no excuse for not getting in on the action.

A freshly created centennial graphic proudly bears the theme “A Transforming Heritage,” which was chosen with a three-fold purpose: to celebrate the inspiration behind the founding of Saint Mary’s as a college by the Diocese of Winona; the passion that has sustained us over the years; and the hopes and dreams for what is possible in our second century.

Mark your calendars Mark your calendars for the Centennial kickoff in June 2012. A Cornerstone Commemoration Event will officially begin our celebration at the 2012 Homecoming, June 22-24, in Winona.

Then, throughout the year, all university events — ranging from Founder’s Day to commencements to the Page Series offerings — will include special Centennial themes and content.

Both visual arts and theatre commissions will debut at Family Weekend on Oct. 5-6, 2012, and an on-campus birthday party for students (and designed by students) is scheduled for April 2013 in Winona.

A special Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs reunion is scheduled for fall 2012, and alumni receptions will travel to the Twin Cities, Chicago, Winona, Washington D.C., Arizona, California, Florida and St. Louis … and many more locations throughout 2012 and 2013.

The year will wrap up with an all-alumni reunion on June 21-23, 2013 and the Centennial Celebration on June 22, 2013 in Winona. Highlights will include a special commemorative train ride from Chicago — which will undoubtedly bring back fond memories for some Saint Mary’s alums of the “Saint Mary’s Special.”

Centennial book Donning Publishing will complete the Saint Mary’s Centennial book by May of 2012. New online experience will change the way you view, connect with Saint Mary’s Whatever happened to your old college roommate?

The Alumni Relations Office is partnering with iModules — a leader in alumni engagement innovations — to roll out a new online community and communication solution this November.

For starters, a new alumni website with a bold new design will draw in alumni with fresh pictures, an inviting new design and easy navigation.

But the interaction only begins there. Alumni will soon find online registrations quicker and easier; they will be able to find event pictures and calendars faster; and they will be able to search and network with other alums like never before.

Though the system, users will be able to search for classmates in a variety of ways. Special “clubs” will be established based on demographics and professions, and others will be formed as the need arises.

“We want to provide our alums with a platform that allows them to connect any way they want to, by school, by profession, by location, or by degree,” said Meg (Leuer ’97) Richtman, assistant vice president, alumni relations.

When alums register for an event or make a donation online, Richtman said the process will be seamless, without the need to re-enter information each time. No more waiting in line while money is being processed! In today’s fast-paced society, users demand their technology keep up with their lifestyles, and the iModules technology promises to do just that.

And, for each alumni event, an instant attendee list is automatically generated, so alums can see who else is coming and send messages to anyone on the list – as well as make automatic Facebook updates.

A recurring word associated with iModules is “high tech.” Alums active with social media may appreciate the Facebook integration option. Alumni can create an SMU profile using existing social media pieces. And every alum

who chooses to promote an event at SMU via social media helps Saint Mary’s with promotion and visibility to new audiences.

“Class Notes” entries can be updated automatically.

Alums will be able to hear about new babies, weddings, deaths, retirements and career changes and advancements instantly online – as well as post photos and videos!

The software is also customizable. All alums will be able to modify which information they want to make public. Each person’s name, city, state and class year will be posted automatically. However, if an alum chooses to opt out, less information will be made public. If an alum wants to include a more in-depth profile, the sky is the limit.

Special features still being developed include discussion boards, interactive chats and career skills segments.

“We’ll be able to get up-to-date information and stay connected easier,” said Richtman. “Alums will be better informed, the software is easier to navigate, and it will be easier to stay in touch. It will also make our alumni office more efficient. People are going to feel the difference in online event registration and online giving instantly.

“This was a significant and worthwhile investment that is No. 1 in alumni relations state-of-the-art innovative technology. We want our alumni to know that we are committed to them.”≠

Look for more information this fall as iModules rolls out in November. A postcard with your unique ID number will be sent to you, or call the Alumni Office after Nov. 1. If you have previously registered for an online community, you will need to log into iModules as well; information does not transfer. Spending five minutes entering information will be worth it to use the benefits of this new system.

Harrington Mansion and Events Center will expand Twin Cities campus presence and potential $2 million anonymous gift makes purchase possible On June 29, Saint Mary’s University finalized its purchase of the Harrington Mansion and Events Center, located adjacent to the university’s Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs (SGPP) in Minneapolis. Saint Mary’s plans to use the property, formerly owned by the Zuhrah Shriners, for expansion of its graduate programs, community outreach, and alumni event venues.

“This is an investment both in our campus and in the Twin Cities community,” said Brother William Mann.

“Saint Mary’s is expanding to meet our growth in educational offerings. We see this as an investment to provide educational access to those who increasingly are excluded from it, and as a commitment to help revitalize the Phillips West neighborhood.”

A growing university Saint Mary’s University opened its Minneapolis campus at 2500 Park Avenue South in 1984 to focus primarily on graduate education, as well as meeting the needs of adult students through baccalaureate degree completion programs. Saint Mary’s helped pioneer the accelerated programming format and has experienced significant growth over the past few decades. Today Saint Mary’s SGPP is enjoying record enrollment, with more than 4,600 students enrolled.

Saint Mary’s latest expansion is the Harrington Mansion and Events Center purchase, which includes the historic mansion, carriage house, modern events center, and 100 parking spaces, encompassing 1.66 acres at 2540 Park Avenue. The mansion and carriage house consist of 30,000 square feet, and the event center has 54,000 square feet. The purchase significantly increases the size of Saint Mary’s campus footprint on Park Avenue. The purchase price of the properties is $2.75 million. A $2 million gift from an anonymous donor made the purchase possible. Saint Mary’s will begin a campaign to raise funds for renovations of the buildings.

The mansion and carriage house will be used for online learning opportunities, office space, gatherings of alumni and friends, and performing and visual arts space.

The center will be used for university events and will continue to be available for public rental. The space is ideal for meetings, corporate functions, and receptions.

Harrington Mansion history The Harrington Mansion is an Italian Renaissance-style home built in 1902 for the family of Charles Harrington, who owned a grain processing and distribution business.

The home’s architects were Frederick Kees and Serenus Colburn, who also designed the Minneapolis Grain Exchange Building and the Loring Theater (now the Music Box Theater).

The Harrington family resided in the mansion from 1902 until 1929. The property was then sold to the Zuhrah Shrine fraternal organization, which owned the property until Saint Mary’s purchased it.

“Zuhrah Shriners enjoyed more than 80 years as a vital part of the Phillips West area of Minneapolis,” said Gary Sibben, Potentate of the Zuhrah Shriners. “Rising costs and declining membership caused us to look for a more suitable home. We are glad the property will remain an integral part of the area’s revitalization.”

The Harrington Mansion was designated historic by the Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission in 1988. This designation protects the external integrity of the historic property while allowing Saint Mary’s to make modern internal renovations.

“We are grateful to the anonymous donor for enabling us to make this purchase,” said Brother William.

“And, we are proud to become a part of the rich history of the Harrington Mansion. Saint Mary’s University intends to preserve that history while making the property highly functional for today’s learners and guests.”

Computer science students create educational game about nutrition In most “Mario” video games, the short, pudgy, mustached plumber’s goals are to save Princess Peach and defeat the evil Bowser.

But Saint Mary’s undergraduate computer science students have developed a “Healthy Mario” computer game with a more important altruistic mission, one that will help children from low-income families learn about healthy eating habits.

It all started, according to Ann Smith, chair of the SMU Computer Science Department, with a goal to develop a course that would expose students to meaningful and relevant software programming, but one that also addressed social problems.

“With most of the stuff we do, it’s hard to connect our work directly to our Saint Mary’s mission. Often the work we do is important and helpful, but it’s not mission related,” she said. “We wanted students to expand their computer science knowledge, but we also wanted them to begin to identify how their knowledge and skills are relevant to civic engagement and social activism.”

Smith said they also wanted the experience to introduce students to a different culture and background and to collaborate with nearby Winona State University, as they have successfully done in the past.

involved working with One Laptop per Child (OLPC) – a non-profit organization aiming to create educational opportunities for the world’s poorest children by providing each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop with content and software designed for collaborative, joyful, self-empowered learning. Their goal truly is one laptop for each child, not one laptop for each school or classroom, but one laptop for each child – across the world – to use both at home and in at school.

The project involved building a software program appropriate for school children from Winona, Mo. – specifically first-graders from a part of Missouri located in the hill-country of the Ozarks. Socially and geographically isolated, Winona is an economically depressed and underserved portion of the U.S. where the average income is $18,640.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2008, almost twice as many (26 percent) school-aged children lived in poverty in Shannon County as compared to the overall state of Missouri average (13.5 percent) and the U.S. average (13.2 percent).

In “Healthy Mario” elementary students can create their own avatar that jumps over obstacles.

At the end of January, Smith and a crew of five SMU students – along with a student and faculty member from WSU’s Child Advocacy Studies Training program and a WSU computer science faculty member – traveled to Winona, Mo., to gain some insight into these children’s lives.

Mitchell May, a senior computer science student from St. Cloud, was excited about the social implications of this project. “We don’t typically get to do this type of work in computer science classes,” he said, “or apply our knowledge to real-world experiences.”

Through home visits, May said, they came to understand the level of poverty these children are faced with.

“It was pretty eye opening, how different it is there from here,” he said. “It was clear they are missing some essential health knowledge.”

The Winona Elementary school faculty asked that the program incorporate state-required learning outcomes and address obesity concerns and healthy food choices.

As a result, “Healthy Mario” was born.

To play “Healthy Mario,” users move forward and jump over obstacles through a two-dimensional world filled with healthy foods that boost their performance and pests that slow them down. On the way to the school flagpole, they pass by things familiar to the region like the state Dogwood flower and the St. Louis arch. They are also given opportunities to make good nutrition and hygiene choices to collect points and awards.

Their “Mario” avatar is customizable to skin tone, gender, eye coloring and hair coloring.

And, as the OLPC computers are integrated to others in the classroom, students can compare their food choices with others in the class and play the game together. For example, if students work together (like standing on each other’s shoulders), they can reach a high reward symbol.

The first-graders will also record the food they’ve eaten in a food diary based on the USDA recommended food guide pyramid for kids. These foods then show up as options in the “Healthy Mario” game. Each food diary is then combined into an overall class food diary to be displayed in various graph forms.

SMU students learned a number of new computer science concepts, including working in an open-source programming environment.

Smith explains that all the code is shareable with anyone else via the OLPC site. Anyone who wants to work on a project has the benefit of using work others have done.

“Being able to read it and study it and figure out how it works is much more common in the real world than writing brand new pieces of software,” she said. “And (our students) were vested in learning these concepts in a different way – not just because they had to for a grade, but because they wanted to create a really neat program for the first-graders in Missouri.”

Computing for Good has been approved as part of a larger computer science curriculum revision on the undergraduate campus this fall.

And this year, a new class will move forward with the “Healthy Mario” project.

In collaboration with WSU, students will continue to develop Healthy Mario with the future goal of supplying each first-grade student at Winona Elementary their own OLPC laptop.

“I feel like we got to a good checkpoint,” May said.

“There’s more work to be done, but it’s a good start and now a user study can be done.”

“We want students to step outside of their classroom comfort zone and to broaden – and perhaps challenge – their current understanding of society,” Smith said. “We want them to see the potential for how technology can make a positive difference in society. And then we want them to experience the joys and realities of this type of civic engagement first hand.”≠

Centuries and Sleuths It’s no mystery why Aleksy’s bookstore is so successful It’s the “whodunit” of mystery book stores.

How do you create a successful independent bookstore among the huge bookstore conglomerates in Chicago?

For August “Augie” Aleksy III ’70 it’s “elementary my dear.”

More than 20 years ago, Aleksy opened Centuries and Sleuths — located its first 10 years in Oak Park and the most recent 11 years in Forest Park.

How he came to be a bookstore owner is, in and of itself, a page turner.

The first chapter of his life begins as a political science student at Saint Mary’s with dreams of being a lawyer and being active with politics. It was there that he met his wife, Tracy Reynolds, then attending the College of Saint Teresa.

Due to his father’s declining health, he began helping with his family’s electrical contractor business. And from there, the plot thickened when Aleksy drastically changed careers and began working in the banking and investment business.

But it was, ironically, a book that dictated his decision to open a bookstore.

Aleksy read, “What Color is Your Parachute” which caused him to reexamine his lifelong dreams of owning his own business. A lifelong lover of reading and of history, Aleksy started with a little market research about what types of books people purchase most often. He found out what books people were checking out at the local library, and he sent questionnaires to about 3,000 people about what types of books they had recently purchased.

He based his bookstore on the answers he received.

He specializes in 60 percent mystery and 40 percent history and biography. “I knew I had a pretty solid idea,” he said.

“Looking back at my business plan, all the things I considered dreams, they actually came true.”

Inside his questionnaire, Aleksy included a quarter for their thoughts. He got enough of them back to fill a pickle jar, which now sits at a place of honor in his store, which is known for its plaid carpeting, comfy chairs, rich woodwork and custom-made Sherlock Holmes busts.

Aleksy said one of his employees once described it as “a man’s library.”

But it’s because Aleksy has gone that extra step — doing more than selling books — that has earned him rave reviews and such honors as one of the 2011 “Raven” Awards — given by the national organization The Mystery Writers of America for a non-writer’s contribution to the mystery writing community. He was also named one of the 10 Best Bookstores in Chicago by the Chicago Tribune and customers have tagged Aleksy as “the coolest bookseller in Chicago.”

Aleksy’s success can be attributed to the fact that he’s more than just a 9 to 5 bookstore. He also creates events that lure people to his store.

For starters, he’s known for hosting author events that include discussions, not just book signings. Some of the big names that have popped by include Steve Allen, Sara Paretsky, and Peter Ustinov.

“It’s been a great opportunity to meet some interesting people and in some cases, up and coming authors. I always tell people that when you come to a book signing, you come away with a lot more than a signed book,” he said.

But bookstore customers might also step inside Centuries and Sleuths to find a reenactment of the trial of Richard III involving two real lawyers and moderated by a federal court judge, or a group of local folks portraying dominant figures in African American history.

Aleksy even staged a murder mystery in which he himself was the killer.

It’s no crime to have fun. Mock trials, debates, and author panels are the norm at this unique establishment, as are “Meeting of the Minds” programs, where guests play important character roles in history and are interviewed in front of an audience. People have portrayed everyone from Martin Luther to Al Capone to Napoleon and Joan of Arc, in costume, and without scripts.

Groups like the Mystery Writers of America frequently meet at his store, and Aleksy also got some attention with his “What’s Cookin’ in History and Mystery” events — which have included food and drink from Agatha Christie novels and a Christmas dinner from the Dickens era.

Next, he’s planning a heated trivia contest between the store’s history and mystery discussion groups — all to keep his loyal customers coming back.

Running his business is a life-consuming job. But Aleksy wouldn’t have it any other way.

“From the variety of people we’ve met over the years, we have formed some close friendships,” he said. But, he advises, “If anybody wants to start their own business, you can do it if you really work at it and have super skills, but nothing’s better than having a family that supports you.”

Aleksy credits his son August IV ’08 and his wife for their constant support and encouragement.

The word retirement isn’t even in his glossary, but that doesn’t mean Aleksy doesn’t look forward to having a little extra time off now and then. “We just celebrated our 40th anniversary, and we’re taking three days off in a row, which is amazing,” he said. “We went to Italy in January 2006. Do you know why we went in January? Because it’s the slowest month in a bookseller’s year.”

The Art of Compromise Judge Art Boylan ’71 helps NFL settle labor lockout and save the season While most Minnesotans were relaxing and recreating this summer, Art Boylan ’71 was meeting and mediating.

Boylan spent his summer mediating the National Football League labor negotiations, so that more than 100 million fans would be able to “kick-off” the football season, as scheduled, this fall.

Boylan, 62, is Chief Magistrate Judge for the U.S. District Court, District of Minnesota. As a federal mediator, Boylan often finds himself in the middle of high-profile, high-stakes efforts to settle cases before they reach trial.

In March, labor negotiations broke down between NFL owners and the NFL Players Association, and players were locked out of team training facilities. On April 20, Boylan was appointed to help the two sides reach a new 10-year Collective Bargaining Agreement. And on July 25, after more than 30 meetings, the billionaire owners and millionaire players reached a deal just in time to allow the preseason football schedule.

After facing the prospect of losing all or part of a season, a big sigh of relief came from everyone involved in the $9.3-billion NFL, America’s favorite professional sport. Headlines across the country read, in effect, “Let the games resume!”

High stakes yet low-profile Boylan is described as both low-key and tenacious, traits that would come in handy during sometimes charged discussions.

“The first thing I told them was this would not fail for lack of effort,” he said, while noting that “there was a huge gap on the big issues” of splitting the league revenue, expanding the season, rookie wage scale, and benefits for retired players.

Talks were held in Minneapolis, Chicago and New York over the two and a half month period.

During this time, the two sides were talking but not making progress. A breakthrough session came in Chicago, when Boylan met with the parties without their attorneys.

The NFL negotiations were certainly high-stakes, but the parties involved — and especially the mediator — were notably low-profile in the media so that the case wasn’t “tried in the court of public opinion.”

Boylan said he asked all parties involved to not succumb to the pressure of talking to the press.

Even now, Boylan is careful not to discuss details of the NFL negotiations, but he is willing to describe how he handles mediations in general.

His job, he explains, “is not to settle cases, but to assist people in settling their own cases.”

Shuttle diplomacy With the NFL negotiation, Boylan made maximum use of his office suite in the U.S. Courthouse, Minneapolis. At times he would fit 36 people in his spacious chambers for group talks. Other times he would split the group into two jury rooms and a conference room, and do a little “shuttle diplomacy.”

“I would go caucus privately with one group, and then go to the other room to talk to them about what I heard, what I thought was being sent as a message, even if it wasn’t said explicitly. I try to read the tea leaves.”

cases. When you have difficult cases with talented lawyers and a lot of money at stake, it’s a lot of fun to help them achieve a resolution.”

After agreement was reached in the NFL dispute, Boylan said he had gained respect for both sides. “They both expressed to me a love of the game that was really sincere. They thought they had to overcome their difficulties for the betterment of the game. It wasn’t just about carving up the dollar bill.”

A Bears fan living in Minnesota Boylan said he had no idea how much interest the case would generate. “I was not a huge football fan; casual at best.

Maybe I’d have a game on while puttering around the kitchen.” After meeting many current and former players over the summer, Boylan says he finds himself watching more sports now than ever.

“A Bears fan living in Minnesota,” Boylan is a native of Chicago and the son of Irish immigrants. He grew up following the White Sox and Blackhawks. “It was wonderful to see them win (the Stanley Cup in 2010),” he said, under the helm of team president and fellow alum John McDonough ’75.

Boylan was a history and social studies major at Saint Mary’s before returning home to earn his law degree from Chicago Kent College of Law in 1976. He moved back to Willmar, Minn.

Ross had opened the championships by breaking the school record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:59.46, then won the consolation final in the 400 IM a day later, touching the wall in 4:17.37. … Freshman Anna Smaron (Maple Plain, Minn.) got her feet wet in MIAC Championships competition with a 17th-place effort in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.6), and did herself one better a day later, qualifying for the consolation finals in the 200 breaststroke, where she posted a time of 2:35.80. …

Freshman Brandon Matis (Blaine, Minn.) reached the consolation finals in the 100 breaststroke, opening the 100 breaststroke competition with a time of 1:02.94 in the preliminaries, then recording a time of 1:03.25 in the consolation final to place 13th overall. Matis had kicked off his first MIAC Championships appearance by shaving seven seconds off his top time this season in the 200 IM (2:08.38). …

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has selected Donny Nadeau ’85 to receive this year’s Mike Augustin Award.

The annual award — chosen by MIAC sports information directors — recognizes outstanding contributions to the conference’s athletic programs and student athletes.

Nadeau has served as sports information director at Saint Mary’s University since 1994.

SMU athletic department colleagues and his SID peers lauded Nadeau for his energy, enthusiasm, creativity in writing, innovations in technology, and quality of work.

The award is named for the late Mike Augustin, a longtime sportswriter at the Pioneer Press who was a follower and advocate of the MIAC and Division III institutions, studentathletes and coaches.

Help us create the SMU of the 21st century While passing through the entrance of Saint Mary’s Hall recently, I began to reflect on the extraordinary individuals who laid the foundation for this Lasallian, Catholic educational institution in 1912. So many people, throughout our history, have perpetuated the strong legacy of education that has transformed Saint Mary’s from a small boy’s school in Winona into a global and transformational university.

Beginning in June 2012, we will commemorate our Centennial and celebrate the remarkable journey that has transformed Saint Mary’s from small school – sitting boldly on a terrace in southeastern Minnesota – to a global university with campuses and locations in Winona, the Twin Cities, Rochester, Apple Valley, Minnetonka, Oakdale, Jamaica and Nairobi, Kenya. We now educate over 6,000 students (and growing!) annually.

Over the past 10 years of leading our alumni relations efforts for the university, I have greatly enjoyed meeting Meg (Leuer ’97) thousands of our alumni throughout the country. Each of you Richtman have stories of your experiences at Saint Mary’s and these Assistant Vice President, Alumni Relations stories tell the history of our university and connect each and every one of us.

As part of our Centennial celebration, we invite you to share your Saint Mary’s story. Tell us what brought you to Saint Mary’s; share your favorite memory, professor or experience; tell us about a tradition that you began or were part of; and/or describe how Saint Mary’s has impacted your life. Our goal is to collect a “century of stories”!

Homecoming Highlights A few sprinkles of rain and some muddy bluffs didn’t dampen SMU’s weekend Homecoming activities June 2426. A full slate of activities — and the opportunities to reminisce and reconnect — drew 400 alums to the Winona campus.

The festivities got off to a quick start on Thursday as members of the class of 1961 enjoyed a day in Wabasha including lunch at Slippery’s, a pontoon boat ride, the National Eagle Center and a visit to LARK Toys before having dinner in Winona.

Bright and early Friday, alumni golfers tested their games on the greens. As guests continued flowing onto campus, the class of 1961 enjoyed lunch on campus (with the alumnae of the College of Saint Teresa branching off for their own luncheon at the CSTea House). Trolley tours, and tours of campus led up to the 50-plus anniversary dinner, which was filled with food and festivities. After addressing the crowd, Brother William presented some diplomas to SMU’s special seasoned alums in honor of their 50 years of life experience.

Friday evening the anniversary classes were out and about throughout Winona until the wee hours of the morning, but that didn’t stop a large group from returning to campus the next morning for the Gilmore Gallop.

Saturday also included a gathering of current and former Christian Brothers, an opportunity to try out the campus ropes course, additional tours, a return of the trolley, and the ever-popular alumni family picnic. Additionally the class of 1961 enjoyed a tour of the Marine Art Museum in Winona.

Later that evening, Saint Mary’s presented this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award to Dr. Don Truhlar ’65 of Stillwater, Minn. Lasallian Service Awards went to Mary Lou (Black ’76) Scheid of Bloomington, Minn., and James ’91 and Molly (Crosby ’91) Cave of St. Paul. Additionally, Rob Figliulo ’76 of Burr Ridge, Ill., received the Alumni Appreciation Award.

The weekend concluded with some relaxing piano music just down the hall from the Chicago band Mr. Blotto and a gymnasium full of gyrating alumni and guests.

Make plans to get in on the fun during next year’s Homecoming weekend June 22-24, where there’s sure to be something for everyone. Come back and see how your friends have changed but your friendships haven’t.

1957 Patrick Egan, Derby, Kan., turned 82 on July 18, 2011 and said it seemed like a good time to retire from some community service projects that he had been doing. He was actively involved with the Derby Community Foundation for 16 years and worked 10 years with The Lord’s Diner, a program and facility that provides a full meal for the poor 365 days a year. He also was active in real estate sales for many years but will still do property management for awhile. Besides his nine children, 30 grandchildren and three great grandchildren, a highlight has been the closing of the millennium Dec. 7, 2000 with the Holy Father John Paul II and 1500 Serrans. Serra is an international group that promotes and fosters vocations to the priesthood and religious. He served on the USA Council and International Board.

Charles Golob, Beaumont, Calif., retired in 2005 and relocated back to California from Arkansas. He spent 15 years as human resource manager and the last 10 years as purchasing manager with Con-Way Transportation, Inc. He and his wife, Carol Sue, have three children and three grandchildren.

1963 Jim Pacholski, Fox River Grove, Ill., retired from his second career after eight years as a job counselor for McHenry County Workforce Network in Woodstock, Ill. Brother Stephen Markham, Chicago, was appointed director of Vocation Ministry for the Midwest District of Christian Brothers. Brother Stephen comes to the position with extensive experience in pastoral and administrative ministry. He has served as teacher and administrator at the high school and university level, pastoral administrator of multiple parishes in the Dubuque Archdiocese and as formation director and auxiliary visitor for the former Winona District. At SMU, he served as vice president for student life. He will spend considerable time at Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill., where he has been named an associate campus minister and associate to the vice president for mission and identity for the university.

Don Nitti, Winona, was honored at the National Catholic Education Associations’ Secondary Schools Department annual conference. He has taught math in the Winona catholic schools for 38 years. He is also a PACC teacher of Calculus I and II for Saint Mary’s at Cotter High School.

Dr. Richard Smith, Bozeman, Mont., was promoted to department head in August 2008 at Montana State University, having joined the faculty in 1980.

His years in the Physics Department at SMC (19651969) continue to be the standard by which he judges the success of undergraduate experience in physics at MSU. Boddicker left Winona the day after her 2011 summer campus residency for Dover, England, where she prepared for her massive swim.

She was able to swim the channel (31 nautical miles) in 15 hours and 39 minutes.

Faculty/Staff Brother Patrick Craine, FSC ’53, Winona, died on July 24, 2011. He entered the novitiate in 1947 after serving in the Pacific during World War II. A Christian Brother for 64 years, he served the Brothers as a teacher in schools in Minneapolis, Chicago, Memphis, St. Louis and St. Joseph, Mo. For more than 30 years, he worked in formation houses of the Brothers in the St. Louis District

I am Saint Mary’s Riechers creates program to empower women When Anna (Shields ’04, M’11) Riechers was completing her master’s degree in Human Development at Saint Mary’s, she discovered she had a hidden passion about empowering women.

This interest inspired her to create a public Hendrickson Institute Forum event in the Twin Cities last spring — a conference aimed at women, led by women, with the purpose of empowering women.

Riechers, who also happens to be the coordinator of Saint Mary’s Oakdale Center, clearly believes in the power of strong women.

One could joke that who else but a strong woman could have planned a major public event from scratch, obtained her master’s degree, continued with her full-time job, and planned a wedding, all within six months.

To explain: Riechers was awarded a grant around December 2010 from the Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership at Saint Mary’s, which enabled her to begin planning a women’s event titled “Women Who Step Forward,” scheduled for April 2011.

While lining up speakers and venues, gathering sponsors, and marketing the event, she also was completing her master’s degree in January 2011 and getting married in June 2011.

With so much on her plate, Riechers chose to push off commencing until after she was married, which meant that she graduated the day after her wedding.

“My honeymoon was commencement,” she said with a laugh. “It was a little hectic.”

The formation of ‘Women Who Step Forward’ Riechers explains that SMU’s Human Development program is very individually based and sculpted around each student’s specific interests.

“I discovered I was focused on human value,” she said. “And women’s empowerment in business was something I was dedicated to and I decided to focus in on that.”

Riechers said a women’s self esteem and spirituality class at Saint Mary’s was what truly opened her eyes. “I saw that women need to find new ways to advance in their careers and their personal lives as well.”

So she wrote up a grant proposal, creating a venue for women to be able to come together in community and learn more about stepping forward, gaining confidence and finding the skills necessary to step into leadership positions in their careers and personal lives.

She soon learned that SMU’s Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership was going to be offering grant opportunities, and she jumped at the chance to apply.

“I was really surprised when it was accepted, but also

pleased,” she said. “I just started looking for speakers and topics and tried to figure out what was most important for women to be exposed to. I wanted topics about both the emotional and spiritual aspect of women’s personal growth and leadership, as well as wanted to provide them with concrete skills about how to step forward as a leader.”

One of her first hurdles was learning how much speakers are usually paid — dollar figures that didn’t match with her budget.

But Riechers introduced herself to the guest speaker, New York Times best-selling author Gail Evans who served as the executive vice president of CNN and served in President Johnson’s administration, online. “I was so impressed with her, and I reached out to her to I let her know what I was trying to do and that I had a small cash flow, and she said she would do it. That’s when I knew this was actually going to turn out. A lot of women were excited to be a part of this process and just stepped up.”

Riechers said that Evans’ presentation revolved around the need for women to support each other in advancement. “She explained that unless we advance together, we’re not going to advance at all — a message I feel is very important.”

The conference also included several breakout sessions with titles like, “Conflict to Communication, “Balancing for Health and Success,” “Loving Myself Regardless” and “Stand Tall and Have it All: 7 proven strategies to improve your career.”

Riechers brought on some additional sponsors to keep the admission fee to a minimum.

“The really important part of this whole thing was not to generate income, but to reach out to women who wouldn’t normally be able to go to a personal and professional development conference like this one,” she said. “We wanted to expose as many women to this as possible.”

About 80 people attended the inaugural Women Who Step Forward event in April at the Harrington Mansion and Events Center — just one portion of the Hendrickson Leadership Forum events.

Riechers said she was pleased with the diversity of participants who had different age levels and varying levels of employment positions, as well as the span of companies who were represented.

And, she said, some funding is left over from last year.

Riechers hopes to continue to grow the event and make it an annual one. “A lot of people, on evaluations, said they want to come again this year,” she said.

So what did the administration from Human Development think of the event?

“Well, they gave me a degree,” Riechers said, laughing. “My advisor and the program director came to the event, and it was wonderful to have them there.”≠

We love a parade!

This photo, unearthed while searching for photos for the forthcoming Saint Mary’s Centennial book, depicts a local May Day Parade in 1927.

We’re not sure what’s up with the joker or the king, but the “M” on the hood of that now antique automobile stands for Saint Mary’s.

In contrast, the second photo depicts our Saint Mary’s float in Winona’s 2011 Steamboat Days Parade. Faculty, staff and students gather for two local parades each year to promote local spirit and increase visibility for “the big M”.

Big Red, our cardinal mascot who rides atop the Saint Mary’s float, is always a big hit!
