Schoo Sectio Switch to Sage These are the people that are working every day behind the scenes to bring you fresh, delicious food. They don’t get a lot of recognition for the amazing work they do, but they definitely should. The people who work in the St. Mark’s cafeteria are special people who strive to help you make the right choices when you walk into the ever so busy cafeteria. Ever since Sage took over the St. Mark’s cafeteria, the cafeteria has had a new sense of energy. We interviewed two of the Sage employees. The two workers who were interviewed were the people in charge of the St. Mark’s branch of Sage, Mr. Garrett, and the head chef, Mr. Elsaesser. We asked them if they had worked in any other catering services, and they both said yes! Mr. Garrett said, “I started with Sage six years ago. Before that, I had worked with Carlisle Country Club and a few other places but never a specific catering company.” Mr. Elsaesser said, “I worked for Hyatt hotels.” When he was asked why he switched to Sage he said, “Because I was able to have a life outside of work, which means I got to spend time with my family more.” We asked the Sage employees if working at Sage had in any way impacted their life, and Mr. Garrett responded, “Yeah, like Mr. Elsaesser said, we get the regularity of getting holidays off, and for the most part we get weekends off, too.” Mr. Elsaesser responded to the question, “What is your favorite part of working for Sage?” by saying, “I enjoy Sage because they are a well­organized company, they are very detailed with their training plans, and they want to put kids, students, diets first.”

“Where do those fresh items come from?” Mr. Garrett responded, “We have a full database of menus, it’s called menu builder. We go in there and tailor our own menus and things that spark our interest.” “Does everyone have a specific job or does everyone do a little bit of each job?” “It’s a kitchen brigade; it would be almost counter­productive to have each person do a little bit of each job.” “Have you worked at any other school?” “Yes, I worked at a women's college and you guys [at St. Mark’s] eat a lot more.” The last question was, “How has St. Mark’s, as a community, improved thanks to Sage?” Mr. Garrett replied, “I think they can now see the importance in the things we mentioned, like nutrition and preparation. Last year and in previous years, I believe they were very happy with their food service staff. They have never had any trained staff or chefs. Now that they are seeing organization and structure, I think it’s starting to come around for the community.” So, next time you are in the cafeteria ordering your delicious food, take a second to stop and talk to the amazing person serving your food. Tell them thanks, and move on with your day, but they will remember you.

1st Place: Spanish with 81.8% of the vote. Tied for 2nd Place: Chinese with 9.1% of the vote, and Latin with 9.1% of the vote.

The New Winn Science Building The new science building is the talk of the town. The final beam placement only increased the excitement. People were going crazy at that place. All the science teachers can’t wait to move into the new building as it will be full of new technology and materials. Did you know that there will be a full­on 3D printer? As you are wandering into the baseball field or just pulling into the school, you can see the beautiful framework in which the final beam was placed. The dome at the top signals a new deck for interesting things. The new building will make the baseball field a different sight. It will also shed a light on a part of the campus that not too many people go for their free time. I have personally seen some of the models of what it’s going to look like that were just lying around at the entrance of our Eugene McDermott Science Building, and the colors are going to make it the best part of St. Mark’s. We interviewed Eugene McDermott master science teacher, Mr. Mead, on his thoughts about it, and he gladly gave us his ideas on the revolutionary building for us here at St. Mark’s. Interviewer: Will you get a chance to teach in the new building? Mr. Mead: I’ll teach in the Winn Science Building for the second half of next year when McDermott­Green is undergoing renovations. When the entire project is completed, I will go back to the first floor of the refurbished McDermott­Green Building. All middle school science classes will be taught in McDermott­Green after that. I: How do you think the new building will affect the learning of the students? M: In addition to having much more classroom space, there will be a makerspace, robotics lab, DNA lab, planetarium, and greenhouse that will allow students to do much more project­based stuff than is currently possible.

I: What do you think of the technology inside the new building? M: The presence of the makerspace, robotics lab, and DNA lab will bring in lots of new technology that we can get into the hands of students as soon as the building is completed. I: When will the new building be completed, and will students be allowed to use it? M: The Winn Science Center will be operational starting next January and most 5th­12th grade science classes will be in the WSC. McDermott­Green will be under renovation until August of 2019. The entire project will be completed in time for the start of the 2019­2020 school year. Students will have access to the entire complex with middle schoolers having classes in McDermott­Green and most of the upper school science classes in the Winn Science center (except physics which will be in McDermott­Green)

NFl Playoffs Synopsis & Super Bowl Preview Synopsis How the Patriots got here The Patriots are now in the Super Bowl (like every other year.) This is how they got to the Super Bowl. In the first game, the Patriots beat the Titans 34­14. Personally, when I watched it, I knew, no doubt about it, that the Patriots were going to win. Even though the Titans scored the first touchdown the Patriots were not fazed. They came back and scored five touchdowns in a row, one of them being a 50­yard touchdown pass Dion Lewis. In the second game, the New England Patriots vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Pats pulled away with a win 24­20. The game looked like Jacksonville was going to win. It also didn’t help when in the second quarter Rob Gronkowski got hit in the head and missed the rest of the game. At the start of the fourth quarter, the Pats were down by 10. Jacksonville did all that work, just so the GOAT (Tom Brady) can do his usual thing again. To me, it looked like the Jaguars just gave up. Brady pulled it together and scored two touchdowns to win the game, and Tom Brady took the Pats to another Super Bowl.

How the Eagles got here Nick Foles held the Eagles together after having to play for the injured Carson Wentz, so the Eagles are in the Super Bowl. In the Eagles’ first game, the Eagles beat the Falcons 15­10. It was a low scoring game, so unless you love football or like or hate one of the teams, the game was kind of boring. At halftime, the score was 10­9 Falcons. The next two quarters there were only two field goals and that was it. I’m sorry if you’re a Vikings fan because your team got destroyed 38­7. Even though the Vikings scored on the opening drive the Eagles were on top for the rest of the game. The Eagles first and second touchdowns were turnovers by Case Keenum, the first one being a 50­yard pick­six, and the second one being a fumble. From there it just went downhill like a snowball that is falling down a mountain getting bigger and bigger. So the Vikings go home and the Eagles go to the Super Bowl! Super Bowl Preview We took a poll on who people around the school want to win, and who they think are going to win. We added a neither option to the “Who do you want to win” question because, let’s face it, it’s the Patriots against the Eagles. According to the data, this is was the people we asked thought: Who do you want to win? Eagles ­ 60% Patriots ­ 12% Neither ­ 28% Who do you think will win? Eagles ­ 24% Patriots ­ 76%

FA Cup 2017-18 If you don’t know what the FA Cup is, it’s is a knockout tournament for teams in England ranging from Premier League teams all the way to 4th division teams. It is very cool to watch a small team upset a big team, and these have become known as cupsets. The 2017­18 FA Cup promises to be a great one, just as always. On Friday, January 26th, the fourth round of the FA Cup will start. There are only two games that day, one of the games being Yeovil Town against Manchester United. Manchester United beat Derby County to get here, and Yeovil Town beat Bradford City to get here. The other game is Sheffield Wednesday against Reading. On Saturday, January 27th, there will be eleven games. The two best games will probably be Middlesbrough against Brighton & Hove Albion, and Liverpool vs. West Brom, all premier league teams. There’s also Newport vs. Tottenham, Watford vs. Southampton, Sheffield vs. Preston North End, Milton Keynes Dons vs. Coventry City, Millwall vs. Rochdale, Swansea City vs. Notts County, Wigan vs. West Ham, Nottingham Forest vs. Hull City, Huddersfield Town vs. Birmingham, and Peterborough vs. Leicester. Huddersfield Town somehow beat Arsenal, but the rest of the nobody teams played other nobody teams in the previous round. On Sunday, January 28th, there will be the final two games of the fourth round. The games are Cardiff City vs. Manchester City, and Chelsea against Newcastle United, which should be a great game. Even after this, the fourth round still isn’t over. The teams that tied will play each other in a second game and whoever wins that goes to the fifth round. If they tie that, it will go to overtime and then penalty kicks. The fourth round should be very exciting!
