Southwest Minnesota State University is a four-year public university in Marshall, Minnesota offering a high-quality education in the liberal arts and professions to prepare you for a life that is successful both personally and professionally. SMSU prepares you to be the leaders, thinkers, and entrepreneurs of the future.
Welcome Mustangs!
We are excited about your interest in Mustang Athletics! Our department is home to more than 400 student-athletes that are proud to call themselves Mustangs. Our talented team of coaches and staff provide influential support as our student-athletes chase their dreams, both in the classroom and in their sport.
SMSU Athletics is a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) and NCAA Division II. The NSIC is widely known and respected as one of the top conferences in all of Division II. Our teams have the consistent opportunity to compete at the highest level. The NSIC has won twenty-five (25) Team National Championships since 2006 and crowned more than ninety (90) individual national champions. The best of the best compete in the NSIC and Mustang Athletics is proud to be a member.
At SMSU, we pride ourselves on providing our student-athletes with an outstanding experience. That experience begins with being a student. Small class sizes, engaged and supportive professors, and an array of academic success resources are found at SMSU. Mustang student-athletes continually achieve GPAs higher than 3.0, with many teams achieving higher than a 3.5 GPA annually. Our coaches place an emphasis on being a student first, something we’re very proud of.
Being a student-athlete at SMSU also provides the opportunity to compete with and against some of the best in Division II. Our student-athletes have the tools and resources necessary to meet their goals. Outstanding facilities, support staff, and top-notch coaches are found here at SMSU. The camaraderie of our entire department, teams supporting each other and celebrating each other’s successes, is something that makes SMSU very special.
We look forward to what is ahead and hope you’ll be with us on the journey.
We are MUSTANG PROUD. 20 Sports. 1 TEAM.

Facilities
MUSTANG SOCCER LOCKER ROOM
SCHWAN REGIONAL EVENT CENTER
Home to Southwest Minnesota State football and women’s soccer, Mattke Field at the Schwan Regional Event Center, has emerged as the premiere outdoor event facility in southwestern Minnesota. It has served as the home for SMSU football and women’s soccer since 2008. The Regional Event Center is a bowl-shaped venue that seats approximately 2,500 people on a mixture of chairback, bench and terraced seating.
MARSHALL REGIONAL TRACK & FIELD COMPLEX
The official groundbreaking for the Marshall Regional Track & Field complex was on April 14, 2014. The complex is located on the northeast corner of the SMSU campus and is a renovation and expansion of the existing Mattke Field stadium. The project is a partnership with SMSU and Marshall Schools. The Track & Field Complex also acts as a practice facility for women’s soccer.
SMSU WEIGHT ROOM
The Southwest Minnesota State weight room, renovated with new equipment in 2018, gives Mustang student-athletes some of the best facilities in the region. The 4,059 square foot facility, which was built in 1996, added more space which greatly enhanced the amount of work stations available, allowing more intense lifting periods
DON PALM NATATORIUM
Don Palm Natatorium is located in the Physical Education building and is accessed through the men’s and women’s locker rooms. The competition pool is 25 yds x 6 lanes. The diving well has a 1 meter diving board (installed 2008) and 3 meter diving board (installed 2019). The facility went through a complete renovation in the summer of 2022 making it one of the best on-campus facilities in the upper Midwest. Don Palm Natatorium is home to our SMSU women’s swimming and diving team.

FROM HEAD COACH
Clay Glasgow
Thank you for your interest in Southwest Minnesota State University! I am very excited about the future of the Mustang Women’s soccer program and eager for you to be a part of it. The SMSU community provides you with support in and out of the classroom. On the field, we help each student become their best self. We build our team off the field by volunteering in the community and learning about the importance of service. We create an environment where student-athletes want to compete every day and be the best in every aspect of their lives.
Every day, we strive for commitment and optimism. We bring positive energy, fuel creativity, and stay accountable. My goal is to bring the program to the top of the NCAA D2 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
The academic factor – We are strongly committed to developing leaders in the classroom and within the community. Our team’s GPA goal is to maintain a cumulative 3.4 GPA or higher. We are committed to the success of each studentathlete.
Our culture is all about family – As your coach, my goal is to create a positive team culture where players have a family away from home. I strive to build not only a winning team but also a family in which everyone respects and cares for each other on and off the field. As a family, we hold each other accountable to play at our very best, this accountability pushes us to get better every, driving our desire to win and perform at our highest level.
Playing time – Here at SMSU, you have an awesome opportunity as an incoming player to jump in and play immediately; I know this is a priority for many players. If your goals are to be a winner and be part of a supportive team, then Southwest Minnesota State University is the right place for you.
ASSISTANT COACH ABBEY
My name is Abbey Hoisington. I am originally from Aldie, Virginia. I played on the women’s soccer team at SMSU from 2018-2022 and finished my soccer career with 16 goals, 12 assists, and 5 game-winning goals. I was named All-NSIC second team in 2019 and ALLNSIC Academic team in 2022 and was also NSIC “player to watch” in 2019 and 2021. SMSU has been my home away from home since I was a freshman, and I am excited to have this coaching opportunity at SMSU!”
