HLC SITE VISIT FOR REACCREDITATION • OCTOBER 20-22, 2014

By Dr. Lori Baker, HLC Self-Study Coordinator As readers know from past Focus articles, SMSU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and periodically undergoes HLC review in order to retain accredited status. The University has spent the last several years preparing for this fall’s review, gathering and analyzing data and findings in a thorough self-study. The selfstudy included survey feedback gathered last year from alumni, employers, and community members. On October 20-22, 2014, SMSU hosted five HLC peer reviewers, who are trained in the criteria for accreditation and come from other universities in the HLC region. The reviewers met with members of the University and community to discuss their experiences with the University and to follow up on the information presented in the self-study, which the reviewers received eight weeks prior to visiting campus. The reviewers will next write a recommendation report to the HLC regarding their findings, which the University will receive at the end of the fall semester or beginning of spring semester. The contents of the report will help SMSU focus elements of its strategic planning for the future. The full reaffirmation process is not complete until the HLC approves final recommendations in the summer of 2015. Although the University will not receive official notice of the outcome until the review team submits its report, the team members noted the strong showing by the dedicated faculty, staff, community members, partners, and students with whom they met. They praised SMSU as an institution to be proud of and appreciated the effort that went into preparing and being involved in the visit. On behalf of the HLC Steering Committee, I would like to thank all those who contributed to this process. It has truly been a collaborative effort, drawing upon the full University community, both on-campus and through the work of the many alumni who contribute back to the University. The University looks forward to your ongoing feedback, support, and partnership in our quest for continuous improvement as we move forward with the recommendations identified in the Self-Study. WE are SMSU!

SMSU Named a ‘Beyond the Yellow Ribbon’ Campus Southwest Minnesota State University’s commitment to veterans and their families was recognized on Nov. 10 when the University was named a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Campus by Gov. Mark Dayton. “This has been a goal,” said SMSU President Dr. Connie J. Gores. “With leadership from (Veterans Resource Coordinator) Justin Guggisberg, (Provost) Beth Weatherby and (Associate Vice President for Student Affairs) Scott Crowell, we developed a plan that helps coordinate resources at the university with the Yellow Ribbon businesses in Marshall, to support our veterans and their families.” A committee from all areas of the campus was established to look at what types of services are offered to veterans and how to enhance and expand those services. A Yellow Ribbon Campus — or company, as it is officially called — is a broad organizationally structured company with national, regional and statewide influence. It unites key areas within a company structure to create a comprehensive network that connects and coordinates these areas for the purpose of proactively supportive service members and their families. “What we found in the process is that a lot of the requirements were being met already,” said Guggisberg. “It was an interesting process, and one that affirmed the University’s commitment to our veterans and their families.” “Through participation of groups like yours, our military have seen personally how this program has made a difference,” said Col. Troy Soukup, Brigade Commander of the 84th Troop Command. “Minnesota is a national Yellow Ribbon model. Companies understand the values veteran employees bring to the workplace, and our veterans know they are valued and supported. Your military friendly policies help make a strong community, and stronger workplace. You truly do make a difference,” he added. The honor is the second one this academic year that recognizes SMSU’s commitment to veterans. In September, SMSU was named a Military Friendly School by Victory Media, the leading media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life. The designation puts SMSU in the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools across the country that are dong the most

to embrace service members, veterans and spouses as students to ensure their success on campus. SMSU serves approximately 100 veterans and their families, said Guggisberg. The Veterans Resource Center, located in the Social Science building, recently doubled in size to better serve the university’s growing number of veterans. Following the ceremony, attendees were invited to view the “Always Lost: A Meditation on War” exhibit in the Whipple Gallery. The art exhibit featured photographs of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars after Sept. 11, 2001, and well as poems and prose. The show was brought to campus to coincide with the Yellow Ribbon Campus proclamation, and the powerful Pulitzer Prize-winning images drew a reverent crowd throughout its five-day exhibit.

Many people from across campus were involved in the Yellow Ribbon Task Force instrumental in achieving the honor of a ‘Beyond the Yellow Ribbon’ campus. Pictured above: Kneeling, from left: Cpt. SMSU Launches Ag Education Degree Responding to the needs of schools across the state of Minnesota, Southwest Minnesota State University will offer a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Education starting in spring semester 2015. The addition of the BS in Agricultural Education makes SMSU just the third institution in the state to offer the degree. “The demand for ag education instructors far exceeds the number of students currently graduating with that degree,” said Dr. Gerry Toland, SMSU Agribusiness Management professor. “We think this is a good addition to our other ag offerings and will help satisfy a demonstrated need in the state.” SMSU’s other ag degree offerings include Agribusiness Management, Agronomy, Ag Solutions and Agriculture (a 2 + 2 degree). Toland said students can choose from two Agricultural Education tracks. “There will be a teacher licensure route, so students can be ag instructors and FFA advisors in K-12,” he said. “The other is a communications, marketing, and leadership route, which will prepare students to go into ag journalism or work in communications for agrelated industries.” SMSU is collaborating with several two-year institutions that can offer specific courses as part of the degree. “We will be working with Ridgewater, Minnesota West and South Central Colleges, which already offer certain classes like ag mechanics and animal science that we can’t offer here,” said Toland. “It’s a good example of institutions working together for the benefit of our students.” SMSU and its two-year college partners will develop articulation agreements to jointly determine the best delivery methods (such as hybrid online courses) to ensure all degree requirements are met. “Adding an Agricultural Education major is a natural fit for this institution,” said SMSU President Dr. Connie J. Gores. “We are located in the breadbasket of the state, and the demand for ag education graduates

Dr. Gerald Toland and Agribusiness Management major, Kayla Stenzel. is high. This fits well with the university’s mission to serve not only the region, but the entire state of Minnesota.” SMSU has received a grant from the Minnesota Ag Education Leadership Council as well as the Southwest Initiative Foundation to hire a program director to coordinate the recruitment and marketing of the program. Additional private fundraising to support the start-up and implementation of the new degree offering is well under way and will be critical to the success of the program. The CHS Foundation has provided grant funding to hire the first full-time ag education professor to be added to the faculty beginning in the Fall of 2015. Students interested in the new program should contact the SMSU Office of Admission at 1-800-642-0684 or visit www.SMSU.edu/go/ag

With a shortage of high school agricultural instructors, there is a tremendous need in Minnesota, and nationally, for professions trained in Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (AFNR) education. Student enrollment in agriculture, food and natural resource classes continues to increase, adding to the need of qualified teachers. SMSU Bids Farewell to Weatherby After 22+ Years Southwest Minnesota State University Provost Dr. Beth Weatherby credits her myriad of experiences at the University for preparing her for her new position as chancellor (president) at the University of Montana Western. She begins her duties there on Jan. 15, 2015. Weatherby has been at SMSU for 22 ½ years. She announced her resignation last April, saying at the time, “I’ve had wonderful experiences at SMSU, and that has left me with some options.” Montana Western is a liberal arts institution of 1,500 students located in Dillon, Mont. It is part of the University of Montana system, which consists of five campuses. “I report to the president of the University of Montana,” she said. Weatherby has worn many hats at SMSU. She came to the university in 1992 as an Assistant Professor of English. She was the Creative Writing director from 1992 through 2000. She was the Dean of the College of Arts, Letters & Sciences from 2004-2007, and, prior to that, was interim dean from 2002-2004. She became Provost in July 2007.

“I’ve been blessed to work with an incredible group of people,” she said. “It’s never been dull. I’ve enjoyed working with my colleagues on campus and within the MnSCU system. SMSU is made up of a highly intelligent, creative group of people who care deeply about students and the needs of the region. SMSU has a bright future.” Weatherby will lead the only public higher education institution in the country that offers block scheduling. “’Students take one course at a time,” she explained. “They may still take five courses per semester, but they will attend one course at a time, for about 18 days each.” That unique approach, and the natural beauty of the region, appeals to her. “It’s a beautiful, small rural university,” she said. “Dillon is an old mining town of about 4,000 and is very vibrant.” Her time at SMSU has prepared her well, she feels. “What has been reinforced for me, every day, is that leadership is all about people. That’s number one,” she said. “I’ll miss the people the most. I have a lot of good friends and colleagues. At the same time, I’m looking forward to this new challenge.”

SOUTHWEST STORIES From Behind the Desk to the Front of the Class

One day you’re the student. The next, the professor. That’s the situation Leazah Behrens finds herself in as she enters her first year as an assistant theatre professor at SMSU. She is a 2009 alumna of SMSU, and went on to earn a master’s degree in theatre arts, with an emphasis in scenic design, from Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. Behrens was born in Marshall and lived here until kindergarten. Her parents are Hazel and Steve Behrens, who are now pastors in Streeter, N.D. She still has family in the area. Her father worked for the old Taylor Lumberyard when she was in Marshall. Her father “went to become a pastor. We moved a lot after that,” she said. She graduated from Parker, S.D. She entered SMSU as a graphic design major, “then I took an Intro to Theatre class. I liked it. I thought to myself, ‘Maybe this is what I should be doing.’ It started as a minor, then became a major.” What’s it like being back at SMSU? “Some things have changed, but some are the same when I was here. I have more responsibility now, which is a little awkward. I want to say ‘Can’t I just take a nap in the Green Room?’ instead of being in charge of this or that. I’m still mistaken for a student. “It was nerve-wracking that first day. I was a little unsure of myself. I am in charge of the class, but I don’t like to be overly pushy. I like to be friends with people. Five years ago, I was that student (in the classroom).” Her main focus is scenic design, something she said can enhance a production. “I will run the shop and design the sets,” she said. “The set becomes another part of the story and helps bring the audience into that world. I like being part of the picture, then sitting back and watching to see how the pieces fit, how the actors work with the set, or vice versa. It’s a way to create the story visually.” The observation of a roommate in Gainesville, Fla., spurred her to attend grad school. “I was working at a preschool and volunteering

in community theatre,” she said. “My roomie at the time (Valerie Gregoire of Marshall) told me that when I wasn’t doing a show, I wasn’t the same. I’d miss my family; I wasn’t as happy. She pushed me to apply. I thought maybe I’d get more work (with a master’s).” The position at SMSU came up, and Associate Professor of Theatre Nadine Schmidt contacted Behrens. “I had kept in touch with her and Sheila (Tabaka),” said Behrens. “The timing was good. She sent me a message saying I should apply.” After graduating, she lived for a while in Sante Fe, N.M., Sioux Falls and Gainesville. Gaining some real-world experience during that time benefitted her, she feels. “When I went to Wayne State, I was more geared and focused and wanted to make sure I got the most out of it. I think being gone a while, then going back (to college), is good. I knew what it was like to try and get the jobs without the knowledge.” She was smart enough to know what she didn’t know, in other words. Behrens wants to continue the ‘family’ feel of the theatre program at SMSU. “The students here love the theatre. It’s a small program on campus, and it’s very much a family. I’ve met people who have gone to SMSU, not at the same time I did, and they all feel the same way.” She’s enjoying the transition from sitting in a desk to standing in front of a classroom, though she admits that at times it’s “a little weird.” Just give her time. SMSU’s Justice Administration Program Receives Honors The Justice Administration program at SMSU received two honors during the fall semester 2014. The program has been certified as a Professional Peace Officer Education Program (PPOEP) by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training. In addition, the Justice Administration program has also been ranked No. 10 nationally of the top 30 Most Affordable Accredited Criminal Justice Degree Programs in the nation. The PPOEP certification “carries quite a bit of weight,” said Associate Professor of Justice Administration BC Franson. “You can’t be a law enforcement officer in Minnesota unless you graduate from an approved program,” she said. “Being certified is validation that what we teach is what the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training is looking for.” She said that most SMSU students who major in Justice Administration go into law enforcement, corrections or on to law school. “You can do all of that with a major in Justice Administration because we have broad elective options for our students.”

Justice Administration students will also need to complete a 10-week skills course through a community and technical college, she said. Being recognized for affordable quality sets the Justice Administration program apart, said Franson. “There are a lot of important components to your education, especially cost. With a Criminal Justice degree at SMSU, our students are able to acquire a broad sense of all the roles in the various fields that fall under Criminal Justice,” she said. The affordability honor came from TopCriminalJusticeDegrees.org, which ranked the programs and told about each. For more information about the Justice Administration program at SMSU, contact Franson at: BC.Franson@SMSU.edu; 507-537-6083.

Mustang Speaker Series Puts Alumni Back in the Classroom Are you a member of our alumni community, and want to share your real-world experiences with current SMSU students? Consider becoming part of the Mustang Speaker Series. Coordinated by the Alumni Office at SMSU, this initiative puts SMSU alumni in front of classes, allowing successful professionals to discuss their experiences, offer advice and answer questions. “During the academic year, many alumni come and speak to classes,” said Mike VanDrehle, Alumni Director and himself an alumnus. “We’ve had alumni in the classroom throughout the year. Our students give the program high marks, as do faculty, who appreciate having alumni talk about real-life applications of what

the students have been learning in the classroom.” So far this academic year, approximately 25 alumni have spoken to 31 separate classes, reaching over 1,100 students. “We have a lot of alumni across the country who loved their SMSU experience and who are willing to share what they’ve learned as they move into their professions,” said VanDrehle. “Having them talk to our students is a great way for them to stay connected with the university, and it’s a great way for our students to talk with people who have had common SMSU experiences.” Alumni wishing to participate in the Mustang Speaker Series are asked to contact VanDrehle at 507-537-6257; Michael.VanDrehle@SMSU.edu.

MUSTANGS & PRESIDENTS Having a college president as a member of a university’s alumni base is not that uncommon. Having five alumni who are college presidents, is. “It really is unusual, especially when you consider that we are a very young institution,” said Mike VanDrehle, SMSU Alumni Director. SMSU opened its doors in 1967, and to date, has 19,360 alumni, counting those with graduate degrees. All five college presidents credit SMSU with being a cornerstone of their educational experience. Each, too, says that aspects of SMSU that attracted them in the first place are important at their respective institutions: small class sizes, academic excellence, affordability, and a commitment to student success by faculty and staff. The five alumni presidents include: • Dr. Rassoul Dastmozd, Saint Paul College • Dr. Tom Jackson, Jr., Black Hills State University • Dr. Mark Nook, Montana State University Billings • Dr. Dene Thomas, Fort Lewis College • Dr. Steve Titus, Iowa Wesleyan College

Dr. Rassoul Dastmozd Saint Paul College (St. Paul, Minn.) “Higher education is the best opportunity for upward mobility. It gives you tools and a passport. That’s my philosophy,” said Dr. Rassoul Dastmozd, the president of Saint Paul College, a community and technical college in St. Paul, Minn. He is a first-generation college graduate who began his duties on July 1, 2011. He graduated from SMSU in 1983 with a degree in Electronic Engineering Technology. He earned his master’s in Educational Administration from Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, and his Ph.D. in Education and Human Resources and Community College Leadership from Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colo. He worked as an engineer for three years before making the transition into education. His first teaching position was at Indian Hills Community College, Ottumwa, Iowa. He transitioned into administration after 15 years at Indian Hills. Dastmozd has also been Vice President of Instruction at Clark College, Vancouver, Wash., and Dean of the Applied Technologies

Division of the Eastern Iowa Community College District in Davenport, Iowa. Though he started as an engineer, he always longed to be a teacher, an interest that was piqued at SMSU. “I was a teacher helper at SMSU. I helped one of my professors with lesson plans. I always wanted to teach, it’s a higher calling. It reengineers futures, and education can’t be taken from you after you’ve got it.” Community colleges have been real contenders and equalizers in promoting opportunities in the higher education landscape for many since 1901, said Dastmozd. “They are the best kept gem of higher education Dr. Rassoul Dastmozd ‘83 in the U.S. These institutions are truly the economic development engines of their communities, regions, and our nation.” “We are working with students who perhaps are the first member of their family going into higher education. Many are returning from the service, or changing careers. Our average age is 29, and we are very diverse, we have students representing 35 countries. We are a pathway for these individuals, and there’s room for everyone, whether it’s English as a Second Language, or beefing up fundamental skills, earning a certificate, or AAS degree in manufacturing, culinary arts, health, accounting, business, IT, finance, transportation and construction, just to name a few, or an AA degree to transfer to a four-year institution. A community college is the first pathway to higher education, and allows students to examine their abilities and test the waters. Our goal is for them to be successful. At Saint Paul College, it is all about our students.” That type of caring attitude “is what I had at SMSU. The faculty was instrumental in shaping me as a young man. My rite of passage

6 | FOCUS

was at SMSU, it made me ask, ‘How do I become a contributing member of my community?’” Keeping a sense of humor is something that Dastmozd believes is important. “I never take myself seriously,” he said. “Sometimes you’re on top of the saddle, and sometimes the saddle is on you.” Machining and Culinary Arts are the two largest programs at Saint Paul College, which has 10,000 students. “We have 47 technical programs and about 79 certificate programs. We’ve grown 90 percent since 2002,” he said. Community colleges, he feels, “are democratic institutions. They provide opportunity, a chance to get from one point to Dr. Tom Jackson, Jr. ‘85 another. It’s low risk and high return. It’s not an end-all. We need to all be lifelong learners. Community college is the first rung, the first opportunity in higher education. We don’t look at SAT or ACT scores, we welcome students — we don’t weed out students.” He came to the U.S. from Iran in 1979 at the urging of his father, who said if the young man stayed in his native country, the only time he would see his son would be under a headstone. The country was in political turmoil, and so, with two bags and $1,500, he began his journey. He enrolled at Redlands Community College in Oklahoma City, but found it not as welcoming as he would like, so he transferred to SMSU. It is at SMSU he received the academic support that helped him succeed as a student, and developed the work ethic that has been a professional trademark. Today he leads one of the highest regarded community colleges in the country, and he never stops building bridges. “I walk around campus three times a day, always learning. I spend 30 percent of my

& PRESIDENTS time outside,” he said. And if there’s one thing that remains true, it is this, he feels: “Higher education is not a dead end, no matter where you go.” Dr. Tom Jackson, Jr. Black Hills State University (Spearfish, South Dakota) Ironically, Dr. Tom Jackson, Jr.’s first exposure to the Black Hills of South Dakota was when he passed through on his way to visit SMSU from his boyhood home in Seattle, Wash. “I was always struck by the beauty and the serenity of the Black Hills,” he said. “Over the years, as opportunities presented themselves, I always knew that if I had a chance to live and reside in this area, I might be compelled to look at it.” Jackson began his duties as president of Black Hills State University on July 3. It is an institution of 4,500 students, with its main campus in Spearfish and a University Center in Rapid City. In 1985 he earned a Business Administration degree from SMSU. He earned a master’s in Counseling from Shippensburg University (Pennsylvania) and an Ed.D. degree in Educational Management from the University of La Verne (California). Prior to being named Black Hills State University president, he was Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Louisville and before that, Vice President for Student Affairs at Texas A&MKingsville. Jackson is happy to be the president. “It is a beautiful place in a good state, with great people and a lot of collegiality,” he said. “It’s the right time and the right place. I have been a vice president twice, and I’m 54 years old,” he said. “Knowing that very few people of color are, one, vice presidents and, two, in a position to be a president of a university — one of the most meaningful, symbolic positions on a campus and one that impacts minds and people — I thought it would be somewhat selfish to say to myself that I would just want to remain and work at what I was doing. After reflecting, I realized it was time to pursue that dream. Black Hills is a wonderful place and I’m humbled and honored to be where I am.” The university has a top 5% in the world AACSB business program and a prominent teaching program. “What is really unique is the Sanford Underground Research Facility,” he said. That facility, located 8,200 feet underground, is where undergraduate students conduct and actively participate in significant federally funded research programs with faculty from around the world. Increasing the university’s name identity will be something Jackson will improve, also. “As much of a great asset as this university is, and as many people that travel through Spearfish, it’s amazing how many still don’t know we exist. They come to Mount

Rushmore, an hour south, and they come through Spearfish and don’t know it has the only comprehensive university in western South Dakota and one of the oldest in the entire Midwest.” Black Hills State University’s roots remain preparing teachers. “That was our founding, as a normal school, and teachers are still the bread and butter. “There are 1,800 physicians, 1,400 attorneys, 1,000 engineers and 440 dentists in South Dakota. Teachers have taught all, and all will credit a teacher for influencing their career. That’s the coolest part of the presidency, seeing what our alumni become. We take genuine people and give them tools to solve our greatest challenges.” Jackson and his Dr. Mark Nook ‘80 wife, Mona, are the parents of two children: T.J., 16 and Chandi, 13. Dr. Mark Nook Montana State University Billings (Billings, Montana) Gaining more day-to-day contact with students and faculty was a driving force behind Dr. Mark Nook pursuing the presidency at Montana State University Billings. “I was the Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs for the University of Wisconsin system. I enjoyed it greatly, but it didn’t put me in close contact with students and faculty on a regular basis. I missed that portion of academic life,” he said. Nook is a 1980 alumnus with degrees in Math and Physics. He went on to earn a master’s in Astrophysics at Iowa State and, later, his doctorate in Astronomy at the University of Wisconsin. He taught at Concordia College, Moorhead and was later a Physics professor at St. Cloud State for 17 years before moving on to Wisconsin-Stevens

Point, where he had several administrative positions before joining the University of Wisconsin system. Montana State University Billings is composed of a two-year and a four-year campus. The campuses are about seven miles apart. The enrollment is about 5,000 students. “It’s a regional comprehensive university, just like SMSU,” said Nook. A restructuring of higher education in Montana in the ’90s resulted in the joining of the two campuses, he said. Billings is a community of 100,000. “My wife (Cheryl) and I thought it fit our personality well, and was the size of community we really liked. There are good things going on here, and it was a natural fit.” He began his duties on July 1, “and we’ve started to move from listening to ‘let’s get it done,’” he said. He’s very active in fundraising for a new science hall. Two other short-term priorities are “to improve our student success measures, and stabilize enrollment,” he said. Long-term goals include building enrollment and strengthening the Yellow Jackets’ 17 intercollegiate sports. MSU Billings is the largest online institution in Montana, with many part-time students “who work full- or part-time somewhere in town. This institution has about 30 percent of graduates in a certain year having taken seven years to do so.” His time at SMSU is remembered fondly for helpful faculty and an opportunity to explore his academic curiosity. What’s he like most about his job? “The relationships you develop with so many stakeholders, and the close relationship with faculty, staff and students. I like the relationships downtown, getting to know business people and others throughout the state.” Nook met his wife Cheryl (Londgren ’80, a Marshall native) his junior year at SMSU. They have three grown children. Dr. Dene Thomas Fort Lewis College, (Durango, Colo.) You can excuse Dr. Dene Thomas for pinching herself once in a while and asking, “Has all this really happened?” The president of Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo., she is in her second college presidency. Prior to Fort Lewis College, she was president at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho for nine years. She is in her fifth year at Fort Lewis College. Hers is an amazing story. She began her undergraduate career at SMSU as a 30-year-old single mother of three young children. She earned a Literature degree from SMSU, and her doctorate in English from the University of Minnesota, where she met her husband,

Gordon. She went on to teach at the University of Idaho before she “crossed over to the dark side, administration,” she said with a chuckle. She was valedictorian of her Verdi, Minn., high school class of 21, and today heads a liberal arts institution of 4,000 students nestled in the southern Rocky Mountains. Students enjoy the hiking, skiing and other outdoor pursuits. The university annually boasts one of the best “cyclocross” programs in the nation, a cross between road biking and mountain biking. “Our cycling team has 130 members,” she said. Fort Lewis Dr. Dene Thomas ‘78 College is a diverse institution. “We have a dedication to diversity, which comes by virtue of a 103-year-old contract between the federal government and the state of Colorado to provide tuition-free education to Native Americans. There’s only one other school in the nation operating under the same contract (UM-Morris),” she said. “Our Native American students this semester come from 155 tribes in 46 states,” she explained. Fort Lewis also has a Hispanic student population of 9 percent. “We are very, very much into the liberal arts and diversity,” she said. She compares Fort Lewis with SMSU frequently. “Both provide a private college experience with a public school cost,” she continued. “Both specialize in personal attention, in getting to know students, and helping students. Both provide a quality education, and both have small classes. “My daughter Christine is an alumna of SMSU. We’ve both experienced SMSU and value what a small college provides. When I talk to prospective students, I tell them I graduated from a small

& PRESIDENTS public institution, as did my oldest daughter. My second daughter graduated from the University of Minnesota, and my third from a small private college. I tell them my second daughter graduated and did fine, but never felt connected, or like she belonged. As far as the small public and private goes, each did well for my daughters, they are proud of their experiences, but I tell you something, my oldest paid about a tenth of what my youngest paid.” She said being a president is an honor, “and means you are able to help students develop their full potential. I believe life is both a mystery and a gift and that we are put on this Earth to develop our potential. My Danish grandmother had no formal education, but she was wise. In today’s world, we need all the help we can get to be all we can be. That’s what formal education does better than anything else.” She and Gordon have been married 31 years. Their grown daughters are Christine Ames ‘85, Donna Bintz and Vicki Smith. They have five grandchildren. Dr. Steve Titus Iowa Wesleyan College (Mt. Pleasant, Iowa) “These are challenging and demanding times for college and university presidents,” said Dr. Steve Titus, president of Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. In his second presidency, Titus is grateful for the wisdom and knowledge gained from his first presidential experience. “First time presidents often try to pay attention to everything. I learned many years ago that you can do that for only so long,” Titus said. “With experience comes the capacity to know what to pay attention to and to filter through competing priorities and agendas more confidently and intuitively.” Founded in 1842, Iowa Wesleyan is the first and oldest coeducational institution in Iowa and the second oldest west of the Mississippi River. It is a small college on the move to realize its vision to become Southeast Iowa’s only regional, comprehensive university. Titus became president of the faith-based institution in July 2013. Business, Education and Nursing are its largest programs, and its Center for Service Learning and Civic Engagement is one of the first in the country. Titus graduated from SMSU in 1987 with a degree in Business Administration. He received his law degree in 1990 from Marquette University, and served as an U.S. Army officer and attorney from 1990-1995. He later represented the Secretary of the Army as his Civilian Aide for the State of Minnesota from 1999-2002. Titus received his Ph.D. in Higher Education and Strategic Leadership

from the University of Virginia. His passion for higher education was ignited while a student at SMSU. “My experience at SMSU was truly transformational in every sense of the word. I transferred to SMSU from a large university. When I reached SMSU my academic confidence was low. I encountered faculty and staff at SMSU who cared about who I was as a human being and who believed in me more than I believed in myself. They saw things in me that I could not see at that time – and that made all the difference. I do what I do today because of my experience at SMSU; it is one of the great blessings in my life.” Titus feels a deep Dr. Steve Titus ‘87 responsibility to developing others and to inviting opportunities for others to discern their callings. “This is what colleges and universities are fundamentally about,” he said. “It is a privilege to be called to this work.” Ironically, Titus’ higher education career began at SMSU as Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior and Leadership Studies 11 years after he graduated. Other educational positions have included Senior Vice President at Saint Mary’s University, Winona Minnesota; Vice President for Development and University Relations, Pacific Lutheran, Tacoma, Wash.; President and Distinguished Professor of Leadership and Change, Midland Lutheran College, Fremont, Neb.; and Executive Assistant to the President, Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minn. Titus and his wife, Sara (Hohenstein, ’87, a Marshall native) have two daughters, Emma, 13, and Lilian, 10. Sara, also a lawyer and former fundraising professional, is now a passionate certified yoga instructor and an adjunct professor of Exercise Science at Iowa Wesleyan.

Chef Franco Lania Returns to SMSU For Special Meal The 2014 University Gala this past Homecoming was filled with dancing, laughter, a fantastic dinner and the traditional silent and live auctions. One auction item in particular was of interest to food lovers: an interactive dinner prepared by Chef Franco Lania and SMSU Culinology students. The dinner, taking place November 13, included a five-course Italian meal that each of the 30 attendees would not only eat, but have the opportunity to learn how to create. The group was split into smaller groups moving through the Culinology kitchen to watch and learn how to create the gourmet meal they would ultimately eat. The meal was a highlight of the University Gala live auction, and Chef Lania, besides being on campus to prepare the meal, is keeping busy in many other ways. With his passion and persistence, he has written a book, due out soon. “I can’t disclose the title, but what I can tell you is that it centralizes around the idea of cooking for happiness,” stated Chef Lania. Lania, a survivor of the 9-11 attacks, uses that event as motivation to reinvigorating his life. He explained that a person can have a terrible experience like his on 9-11, but that they can “pull yourself up by the bootstraps, even when you don’t know that they are there.” A major purpose for this book is to provide positive feelings in a healthy way. Cooking for happiness creates that “warm embrace from the stove” when you need it most. With the hype of his new book coming soon, Chef Lania has not lost sight of his first real love, cooking and creating. He has created

a Minnesota Wild Rice Griddle Cake mix, which he prepared live at Hy-Vee in Marshall. He also hopes to develop other ethnic side dishes, also, including Asian, Indian, Thai and gluten free versions. Lania traveled to many Hy-Vee stores in the Omaha area before coming to Marshall. Lania was a guest demonstrator on campus a year ago when he was in town for the annual Fall & Holiday Cooking Show, and is a friend of Culinology Director Michael Cheng. That relationship led to his agreeing to create the special Italian dinner for 30 lucky individuals.

SMSU Receives $10,000 MnSCU Grant SMSU has received a $10,000 grant to implement a new program entitled “Walking in Your Shoes: Creating New Pathways.” The program will establish partnerships with American Indian communities in southwest Minnesota in order to increase access to higher education for underrepresented Michele Knife Sterner populations of American Indian students. The grant is awarded from the Diversity and Equity Division of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system office. Michele Knife Sterner, the Associate Director of the Access Opportunity Success program, will coordinate the program.

The title, “Walking in Your Shoes: Creating New Pathways,” reflects the personal and cultural strengths of the region’s American Indian populations. It is SMSU’s hope that participants will actively be engaged in developing pathways to higher education while creating a culturally inclusive environment for participants, all the while helping the University embrace American Indian strengths, needs and values, said Sterner. “There are two American Indian communities very close to our campus, and this grant will assist the University in increasing higher education opportunities for American Indian populations within the region,” said SMSU President Dr. Connie J. Gores. SMSU has worked hard to re-establish the Indigenous Nations and Dakota Studies minor at the University, said Sterner. “Given our geographic location and the rich history of American Indians in our region, we hope that the minor is attractive to American Indian students. The grant will help American Indian students find access, and success, in college.” MnSCU’s Diversity and Equity Division offers the grant program to support initiatives that will increase the number of students who are recruited, retained or graduated from traditionally underrepresented and American Indian communities.

2014 Alumni Award Recipients Five alumni and four community members received Alumni Association awards at during SMSU Homecoming on Oct. 10. ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS Bill Hanson It’s true. One person can make a difference. Bill Hanson recalls it vividly. His Richfield High School senior class numbered 900, “and I knew I wanted to go away from home to go to school.” Cost, too, was a factor. In February of 1973, he attended a college fair, where he met the late Business Professor Jim Babcock. “I had such a great appreciation for the level of interest he took in me. He made me extremely comfortable. He turned out to be one of my first advisors, and one of my first professors.” Hanson is a 1977 Business Administration alumnus. He is currently the Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director of Business Services for the Duluth School District, a position he’s held since 2003. He met his wife, Jan (Reber, ’75 alumna) while a student at SMSU. They have two grown sons, Kyle and Dave. Andy and Dona Kubat If there are two people who epitomize the spirit of the Mustang Family, it’s Andy and Dona (Schilling) Kubat of Dawson, Minn. Andy is a Cloquet, Minn. native and Dona grew up near Ellsworth, Minn. They graduated from Southwest in 1976. Eleven members of Andy and Dona’s family have attended SMSU, including Andy and Dona; their children Christina Brusven and her husband Dan; and Jon Kubat and his wife Sarah (Quiram); Dona’s sister Lora (Schilling) Trebesch and her husband Steven; her sister Linda (Schilling) Roggenbuck and her husband Mike, and Dona’s sister-in-law, Twyla (Wessels) Schilling. Andy retired in 2012 after teaching 35 years in the Dawson-Boyd School District. He was a physical education/adaptive physical education teacher. Andy coached football, wrestling and baseball. Andy was instrumental in starting the Mustang Rodeo, which was a day of activities for special needs students from the area hosted at SMSU. Dona graduated from SMSU with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and later earned her master’s degree in Education. Dona is a second-grade teacher at Canby Elementary and has taught for 36 years. Kris Taylor Kris Taylor didn’t know it at the time, but her work in the athletic department and for the Student Activities Committee “gave me life skills training. From my perspective as a young student, I didn’t realize what I was learning.” Taylor’s experiences at SMSU helped shape the professional she is today. The 1987 Business Administration alumna is the vice president of Community Relations for Ecolab, the global leader in water, hygiene and energy technologies and services that protect people and vital resources. Taylor serves on many boards, including the Culinology Advisory Board for Southwest Minnesota State University. She helped facilitate a $100,000 Ecolab gift for the renovation of the Ecolab Kitchen. Taylor has two daughters, Shelby (20), a junior at the University of Minnesota, Duluth and Kelsie (18), a freshman at the University of Iowa. She is engaged to Brian Roloff, a Senior Commercial Manager for European Metal Recycling (EMR), based in St. Paul, Minn. LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP AWARDS Tim and Donna Swenson The letters and emails that Tim and Donna Swenson receive warm their hearts. They come from all over the world, and the message is the same: “Thank you for developing the Action Trackchair.” Their son Jeff is the inspiration for the development of the Action Trackchair. Jeff was paralyzed in an accident when he was 16. He liked the outdoors, and that got Tim to thinking.

The Action Trackchair is a wheelchair with tracks that allows people with physical disabilities to get back to hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities in mud, snow and other terrain that ordinary wheelchairs cannot handle. They have established the Action Trackchair Wheelchair Basketball Scholarship through the SMSU Foundation. The scholarship is awarded annually to one or more full-time students on the team. The Swansons have two sons, Jeff and Jim, and five grandchildren. GRADUATE OF THE LAST DECADE (GOLD) AWARD Satyajit Dattagupta “Enrollment management is a marriage of art and science, and both have to work hand in hand.” That’s something alumnus Satyajit Dattagupta has learned over the course of his short but distinguished career in enrollment management. He received his undergraduate degree in Computer Science in 2004, and his MBA in 2007. Today he is the Vice President for Enrollment Management at Washington College, Chestertown, Md., a private liberal arts institution of 1,480 students. The work of recruiting students has fascinated Dattagupta since he was an undergraduate student at SMSU. “I was working with the web office and I had all these great opportunities. One was building an enrollment management system for the Office of Admission. I got intrigued by that; I wanted to have a career in that field.” Dattagupta and his wife, Priyanka Dattagupta (2008 alumna), live in Chestertown, Md., and are expecting their first child. JOHN & KATHY PAXTON ALUMNI SERVICE AWARD Sheldon and Marge Haaland The John and Kathy Paxton Alumni Service Award was established to honor those who go above and beyond for the university. It is not awarded every year. In fact, this marks just the third time the John and Kathy Paxton Alumni Service Award has recognized an individual, or, in this case, two individuals. Sheldon and Marge Haaland are longtime SMSU supporters who quietly give of their time and talents to make SMSU, and the Marshall community, a better place. Sheldon is involved with the Booster Club and served on the Foundation Board of Directors for 15 years. Marge enjoyed a 25-year teaching career and is a former adjunct Spanish faculty member at SMSU. They are dedicated university supporters who together endowed the Haaland Family Scholarship, awarded to a freshman majoring in Agribusiness Management. We can proudly say that we as SMSU alumni give back like no other as we once again had the highest percentage of alumni giving of any public institution in Minnesota! This past year over $4,180,598 was raised through contributions, revenue and support made possible by our generous donors. The Foundation was able to give back just over $3 million to the University with over $800,000 going directly to student scholarships. As a result, the total net assets of the Foundation grew from $11,035,097 to $12,646,210, increasing the Foundation’s capacity to fund scholarships, projects and activities that support SMSU. This past year the SMSU Foundation was part of a campaign across the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system to raise awareness of the work that we do in support of our students and universities. The “Access to Excellence” campaign, a two year campaign to collectively raise $20 million in scholarship support across the entire MnSCU system through our respective foundations, raised $17.4 million in scholarship gifts during just the first year. SMSU successfully generated over $925,000 this past year as part of this statewide effort to support our students. We are also very excited to share the news that fundraising efforts are nearly complete for our new University Entrance sign and sculpture project. We have an ambitious goal to raise $250,000 to fund the design and construction of a prominent SMSU sign and bronze Mustang that will be installed around the new pond developed on the southeast end of campus. This beautiful new entrance project will help define our campus entrance and welcome visitors and alumni back to campus as well as to the community of Marshall. Many of you may have already received that phone call or mailing asking for your support again this year. If you haven’t made a contribution, I would encourage you to consider the SMSU Foundation in your year-end giving plans. Your gift today will ensure additional value and support for our students in the year ahead. Every gift to SMSU, no matter the size, is important and appreciated. While this report lists the many individuals and businesses that have so generously supported SMSU this past year with a gift of $100 or more, please be sure to stop by the Alumni Heritage Gallery the next time you are on campus to see a complete listing of everyone who made a contribution during that time. On behalf of the SMSU Foundation Board of Directors and the students, faculty and staff at SMSU, thank you for all that you do to make Southwest Minnesota State University a great University! Sincerely,

Bill Mulso Vice-President for Advancement Foundation Executive Director

GOLD on the

ROAD SMSU’s GOLD College hits the road for a unique learning opportunity! Southwest Minnesota State University is taking “GOLD on the Road!” GOLD College, formerly Senior College, stands for Growth, Opportunity, Learning, Development. A day of GOLD College will be held in the Phoenix/Scottsdale, Ariz. area on Feb. 24, 2015. The event is sponsored by the SMSU Alumni Association/SMSU Foundation and the Southwest Initiative Foundation and will feature Education Professor Emeritus Lloyd

Petersen, whose presentation will be “The ’20s and ’30s.” The day will include a morning session, lunch and an afternoon session. This “GOLD on the Road” event is an opportunity to connect with fellow SMSU alumni, visit with retired faculty and staff, and enjoy a day of learning.
