SMSU FOUNDATION
Greetings, SMSU Alumni, Friends, and Community Members, Well, we near the end of 2021 with the relentless pandemic still nipping at our heels! Despite the unexpectedly challenging climate, we are very pleased to report that the SMSU Foundation provided nearly $3.4 million in overall financial support to SMSU in fiscal year 2021. Though it was a small improvement over 2020, it still allowed us to increase scholarship aid to more than $1.2 million— scholarships that benefited over 1,000 students! While our traditional fund-raising activities were constrained by COVID concerns, they continued provide a solid foundation of giving this past year. There were also two additional positive factors that helped us grow the total value of Foundation assets from $22.3 to $24.5 million in 2021. First, some solid investment results provided a nice lift. Second— and very importantly—we benefited tremendously from some exciting major gift commitments from alumni and friends of SMSU. In the last few months alone, we have received commitments of $1.8 million, $500,000, $300,000, and $250,000 from donors! As reported last year, SMSU and SMSU Foundation leadership are deploying new, focused efforts on major giving, and the formula seems to be showing great promise so far! I want to offer a special word of thanks to Deeann Griebel, Class of 1980, for her very generous gifting plan focused on growing SMSU’s Student Success programs. You can learn more about Deeann and her long-term commitment at www.SMSU.edu. While Deeann’s gift is significant, let me stress the importance of all donations, great and small, that collectively harness the power of giving at its very best. I thank all of you for your continued and spirited support. With your help, the SMSU Foundation is able to continue to help empower SMSU’s focus on enhancing educational access and campus experiences for students. The Foundation Board of Directors remains strongly committed to supporting this critical strategic goal under the visionary leadership of President Jayasuriya and his team. We invite you to continue to follow closely, expect great things, and help us rise to new heights! Please feel free to reach out to any Foundation Board member with your ideas on how we continue this constructive journey for SMSU and its many constituencies. Our sincere thanks to all of you! Let’s run together and imagine the impact! Sincerely,
Dave Werpy ‘79 SMSU Foundation Board President

Emma Metter
Andrew Pelishek
Environmental Science major from Minneapolis, Minn.
Marketing major from De Pre, Wisc.
“It was really scary to apply to a university. If it weren’t for the Mustang Pathway Program, I probably wouldn’t have even thought that I could get a college degree.” That’s the feeling of Minneapolis native Emma Metter, one of the members of the inaugural cohort of the Mustang Pathway Program at SMSU. Her story is one of opportunity and independence. Metter, an Environmental Science major, reflected on her high school experience, and how the Mustang Pathway Program has been a perfect fit for her. “I don’t believe that your high school GPA defines you. There could be so many other things going on in your life at that time. I believe that it isn’t an accurate representation of who you are as a person.” College was not something on Metter’s mind, until Associate Director of Mustang Pathway Program Dr. Erin Kline and program director Jay Lee came to her high school for a presentation. “This gave me a glimmer of hope, that I could pursue a college education, something that I didn’t think I had the chance to do.” The Mustang Pathway Program is an alternate entry program to allow more students to earn their degree at SMSU. It meets students where they are, and helps them get on track to a degree. Earning a college degree means a lot to Metter, as it will help her attain her career goal of becoming a dental hygienist. It’s a job that requires a degree and, what once seemed out of reach, is now at her fingertips. “Before I started college, I was very dependent on my family. The program really gave me a chance to be independent and be proud as the first person in my family to go to college. It was an easy way to begin to understand what college is and what it is about, and I’m thankful for that.” She was awarded a Mustang Pathway Scholarship, which was one more benefit of the program. She mentioned that receiving the scholarship made her feel more at ease when it came to committing to a college. “I’d say just go for it. It’s a chance to put yourself out there and to grow. Why not take advantage of that?”
Andrew Pelishek is a De Pre, Wisc., native, whose passion is providing an experience for his customers. From a very young age, he always had a passion for barbecuing. After seeing other students on campus selling their own products, he was inspired to start his own business, Pelly’s Pit & BBQ. “It wasn’t about the money, but understanding the business process was my main goal,” said Pelishek, a Marketing major and a member of Enactus, a nation-wide entrepreneurial organization with a chapter at SMSU. “The whole reason I started this was because if I can learn the business on a smaller scale, then I’ll blow it up once I have more resources.” The impact of scholarships helps students in so many ways, and recipients tend to get more involved, he feels. “You’re able to invest more time into your education with scholarships,” he said. Pelishek is the recipient of a trio of scholarships — the Arlene Barker Rich Memorial Scholarship, a football scholarship, and a Leadership scholarship. Pelishek’s favorite class is the Fieldwork in Business and Entrepreneurship. The ability to be able to have a mentor in the course and meet all the guest speakers are two reasons he has enjoyed the course. Being able to network and hear about the guests’ entrepreneurial experiences has been something that Pelishek has found fascinating, as it’s a path he wishes to travel when he graduates. “Honestly if you want to pursue anything, I’d say do it. Whatever your skills are, put them out there. Find the value of those skills and put them out there.”
Sanford Health Commits $500,000 to Honor Legacy of Dr. Jim Denevan
The SMSU Foundation has received a $500,000 gift from Sanford Health to recognize the legacy of former Mustang baseball coach Dr. Jim Denevan. The gift will be funded over five years by Sanford Health, which employs two of Jim’s sons. Jim, Jr., is Vice President of Construction and Planning, and Tom is a Property Management Specialist. A third sibling, Teresa, also lives in Sioux Falls. The endowment will support baseball scholarships at the University. Dr. Denevan was the head baseball coach at SMSU for 21 seasons (1971-81, 83-86, 91-96) and also taught in the SMSU Physical Education department. He took over the program in 1971, its second year of existence. He led SMSU to regular season conference championships in 1974, 1994 and 1996, and one conference tournament championship. He also led the Mustangs to three NAIA District championships in 1974, 1986 and 1993. Dr. Denevan retired in 1996 as the program’s all-time leader in victories with 353, a mark since surpassed by current head coach Paul Blanchard. He was enshrined in the Hall of Honor in 2013. “I’m excited about the potential of this gift for the SMSU baseball program. Baseball was near and dear to dad’s heart, and it’s a wonderful way to honor his legacy at SMSU,” said Jim Denevan, Jr. “Sanford has established endowments with many schools and they mentioned that they would like to do some type of endowment in dad’s name at SMSU,” Jim, Jr. said.

FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2020-2021
All three of the Denevan siblings graduated from Marshall High School. Jim is a 1983 SMSU alumnus with a degree in Health and Physical Education. Their mother, Marilyn, passed away in 2020. “Jim Denevan played a big part in the early history of the baseball program and helped guide the program to prominence during his time as a coach,” said SMSU President Dr. Kumara Jayasuriya. “We are thankful to Sanford Health and the Denevan family for this generous gift, which will continue his legacy in the future.”
Elizabeth Lockwood
SMSU Alumni & Visitor Center The family of Elizabeth (Betty) Lockwood ’84 has gifted $250,000 to the SMSU Foundation, which will be used to completely renovate the Elizabeth Lockwood SMSU Alumni & Visitor Center. “We are grateful to the Lockwood family for their generous gift. It will be a lasting tribute to Betty, who played such an instrumental role at the University,” said SMSU President Kumara Jayasuriya. Lockwood served as Director of Development at SMSU from August 1989 to September 1995. She was active both on campus, and in the community. She was incredibly passionate about uplifting the Mustang community. The gift by the Lockwood Family will be used to renovate the building, located at 1430 East College Drive, over a five-year period. In addition to the Lockwood gift, the Alumni Association and the SMSU
Foundation contributed to lighted signage and new landscaping. Parking spaces were also added to the front of the building. The SMSU Alumni & Visitor Elizabeth (Betty) Lockwood Center will be the headquarters for the Office of Alumni and SMSU Alumni Association. Stacy Frost, Senior Director of Alumni and Outreach, will have an office at this location so she can readily connect with alumni and visitors In addition to serving as the base for the SMSU Alumni Association, it will also be a place where visitors can stop by to learn more about SMSU and the surrounding community.
