Alicia (Lanning) Johnson ’77 Speaks to Freshmen Class The importance of faculty contributions to the educational journey was underscored in the 2010 convocation keynote address by SMSU alumna Alicia M. (Lanning) Johnson, the Director of Continuing Education for the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. Johnson’s talk was given during Gold Rush Days, when freshmen come to campus and become acclimated to the university and college life while meeting their new classmates. Johnson received an English degree from SMSU in 1977. The Yankton, S.D. native later earned a master’s in rhetoric/scientific and technical communication from the University of Minnesota. She has worked at the University of Minnesota since 1999. Prior to her current position, she served as associate to the dean of the University of Minnesota College of Liberal Arts. Before that, she was executive administrator for the University of Minnesota Foundation Investment Advisors. During her time at SMSU, Johnson had a special student-teacher relationship with English professors Philip Dacey and Howard Mohr. “People who teach classes have more to teach than just the core academic material. I think when you get close to faculty, you get triple the benefits,” she said. She urged freshmen to take advantage of their professors’

knowledge during their time at SMSU. “Access to faculty at SMSU is so unique in higher education,” said Johnson. “It’s part of the history and the culture of the university. SMSU does not have the burden of large graduate or professional programs. Undergraduate education is the core, and the teachers live in the community. That doesn’t happen in many places.” She arrived at the topic of her talk by asking herself a few questions. “What are the things that made me grow up while in college? Who were the people who taught me things outside of the classroom, as well?” The answers to those questions were faculty, and she explored those relationships and their value to her during her talk. “I loved my time at SMSU,” she said. She transferred from Yankton College to SMSU because she was impressed with the mission of the school. “The mission was access, both intellectually and physically, and I found that whole philosophy very interesting.”

Pedestrian Underpass Complete A pedestrian underpass that links the campus of SMSU to Marshall Senior High School was officially opened on Nov. 16, 2010 during a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Construction on the underpass was not scheduled until 2012, but when plans were announced to improve Highway 23 this past summer, the project was moved up and work was done simultaneously. The underpass is a safe, fully-lighted pedestrian route that connects the two campuses. SMSU President Dr. David Danahar said it’s symbolic of the working relationship that the university has with Marshall High School.

The underpass begins near Founders Hall on the SMSU side. It comes out on the high school side next to a renovated bike path, and near the site of a proposed two-sheet ice facility, which is expected to include an adjacent hotel and other retail development.

Marshall School Superintendent Klint Willert (left) and President Danahar cut the ribbon at the underpass opening.

University Gala Raises Over $40,000 The University Gala took on something of a different look this past year at the 21st annual event. It was held Oct. 1, 2010 and was part of Homecoming week activities. With a theme of “San Francisco,” the University Gala raised more than $40,000 for music, fine arts and presidential scholarships. Since the beginning of the event, over $500,000 has been raised. Over 250 guests attended the event, the largest scholarship fundraiser annually at SMSU. Rather than sit down for the meal, guests were invited to follow Lombard Street, where themed stations were set up with cuisine and decorations to match. “We thought the San Francisco theme — with all the different types of foods — would be fun for those who attended,” said Stacy Frost, Director of Annual Giving and a University Gala coordinator.

Several food items were available at each station, and a local chef prepared one of those items on-site. A sit-down dessert was served. The new format enabled attendees to view and bid on the 400 silent auction items. There was also a live auction. Over 100 SMSU students helped with the evening, including the Concert Choir and Jazz Band. All My Favorites gave a rare performance as the dance band. Jazz duo Ross Anderson and Peter Lothringer also performed. Alumni Relations Director Tyler Bowen and admissions counselor Erin Eichten were emcees. Tim Deutz was the auctioneer. Lisa Gilbertson of Simply Fabulous in Marshall coordinated the decorations

Virtual Tour of Campus Now Online Students (and alumni) from across the country can now take a tour of SMSU no matter there they live. SMSU has partnered with YourCampus360 to create the tour. YourCampus360 is a New York-based company that uses the latest technology to present virtual walking tours of campuses on websites, as well as utilizing popular social media and mobile devices. The virtual tour is accessible on the SMSU website: www.SMSU.edu. It includes academic buildings, the Student Center/Conference Center, athletic facilities, residence halls and other areas. Each stop along the tour includes photographs and 360degree views. There are even some videos. In fall, a YourCampus360 photographer captured images of more than 45 areas on campus. With the use of a wide-angle lens and by ‘stitching’ photos, virtual images showing the 360-degree views of much of the campus were created. The virtual tour allow prospective students from anywhere in the world to get a feel of the SMSU campus, its facilities and spirit. The content of SMSU’s tour can be easily updated, so as the campus grows and changes, so will the tour.

The tour guide is Elise Kazmerzak, a sophomore from Lake Preston, S.D. Her avatar-like features are shown during the tour as she gives the viewer a description at each tour stop. The tour is available via Facebook and mobile devices such as the Android and the iPad. Students at home or on the go have access to SMSU wherever they have access to the internet. “Students today begin their college search on the internet. Giving students access to SMSU through this virtual tour lets them see the university without taking time out of their schedules to come to the campus itself. The YourCampus360 tour also answers many of the basic questions that both students and parents have about college,” said Andrew Hlubek, SMSU Director of Admissions. “We think this is a unique addition to our website, as we are attracting more students from longer distances, and this will encourage them to come to campus for a personal visit,” he said.

Culinology® Program Goes State-of-the-Art The Culinology® kitchens at SMSU underwent a complete makeover during the summer of 2010. Today, they rival anything in the country. “The students love it; I love it,” said Culinology® Director Michael Cheng. “It has brought the program into the 21st century, and beyond. We now have facilities that no one else has.” The renovation work resulted in a total of five kitchens. One, the Ecolab Skills Kitchen, was named after Ecolab, the St. Paul-based company that is a world leader in cleaning, sanitizing, food safety and infection control products and services. The company presented the Culinology® program a $100,000 gift to help with the renovation project. SMSU alumna Kris Taylor (1987), the Vice President of Community Relations and Ecolab Foundation, helped facilitate the gift. She is a past chairperson of the Culinology® Advisory Board, and sits on the board today. “The Ecolab kitchen is where every student begins his or her Culinology® training. It’s where they learn the basics,” said Cheng. Other kitchens include the baking and demonstration kitchen, where hands-on demonstrations of skills occur and where guest chefs work; the restaurant kitchen, which supports the green Bistro restaurant; and the Culinology® kitchen, used primarily as a research and development kitchen. Culinology® students have many hands-on opportunities throughout the year. Cheng and 25 students from his Menu Design and Service Management class helped with the Avera Cancer Institute’s Building Hope Gala in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Oct. 23. The SMSU contingent helped cater the event for 3,000 guests and keynote speaker Lance Armstrong. “It was quite a challenge and a wonderful opportunity,” said Cheng. “We’ve done small-scale

events in the past, 15 people up to 300 at the University Gala, so this was an experience we don’t get every day. I was very proud of them.” S M S U students helped prep, cook and serve the food, and helped clean up afterward. Culinology ® has grown in popularity as a major since being introduced in fall semester 2006. “We primarily get our students from Minnesota and surrounding states, though we do have students from the East (coast),” said Cheng. “We have been getting more and more from Illinois. I think our presence each year at the National Restaurant Association show in Chicago has helped that.” The renovations mean that the state-of-the-art program now has state-of-the-art facilities to support the educational goals of the students.

Alex Holmes Making His Way in L.A. by Stephanie Bruns ’10 Minnesota has a history of producing great artists, actors, and musicians. Alex Holmes would like to be included as one of those elite. Holmes, a 2004 alumnus with a Theatre Arts degree, is pursuing acting in Hollywood. After graduating, he attended University of Nevada, Las Vegas to pursue a Masters in Acting. Even though he planned on going to New York to study his passion of musical theatre, life had different plans for him. “I planned on going to New York originally, but I wanted to go to grad school and study my craft,” said Holmes. “While at UNLV, I made connections there. We were only four hours from L.A., so there were a lot of actors flying back and forth.” After spending some time in Sacramento doing musical theatre, he moved to L.A. so he could audition more regularly. And some of those auditions are paying off. He’s done his share of commercials, including one for the return of Conan [O’Brien] on TBS. He’s also appeared on 1,000 Ways to Die and the Nickelodeon show iCarly. Holmes is currently working on a West Coast version of Glory Days, originally a Broadway production.

A native of St. Paul, his father is an SMSU alumnus as well. He had planned on attending Luther College in Iowa, but finally visited SMSU with his father and had a better feeling about the school. “I really liked the campus and I would have a lot of opportunities to be a part of productions,” he said. “When I went there, the Theatre Arts Alex Robert Holmes program wasn’t very big so you had to learn to do everything to make the show a success.” Holmes started acting when he was just 10 years old. His father’s law firm had a theatre guild because many of the lawyers took theatre classes in preparation for the courtroom. Every year they would put together a show and his father volunteered him for one. “From then on, I was in a musical every year. As I got older I was involved in community theaters and every show in high school,” he said. “I engulfed myself in everything I could.” At SMSU, he was involved in several productions, including Pippin, The Boys Next Door, and Blood Brothers.

Mary (Reisdorfer) Fuhrman Sets the Tone by Stephanie Bruns ’10 Hy-Vee stores pride themselves in the friendly “neighborhood” feel they bring to a community. Store directors are often the ones who set the tone for that atmosphere. Who would better understand a friendly, small-town experience than an SMSU alumnus? Mary Reisdorfer Fuhrman, a 1995 alumnus with a Business Administration degree, has climbed the ladder to become Store Director of Hy-Vee in Davenport, IA. Fuhrman supervises 300-350 employees while managing sales and profit increases for the store as well as dealing with employee and customer relations. She recently appeared in Hy-Vee television ads celebrating the company’s 80th anniversary. As she looks back at her time at SMSU, she recalls her favorite part about the University. “I loved the small campus feel,” said Fuhrman. “It’s more of a family atmosphere. SMSU is the perfect size…I had 30 or 35 classmates in a class at most and I still knew them all.” Even during her undergraduate career, Fuhrman was working at Hy-Vee in Marshall. As a Business Administration major, there were a few classes that were required but she didn’t necessarily enjoy. Economics happened to be one of them. But one professor helped Fuhrman push through and succeed when she thought she couldn’t.

4

FOCUS

“I had Professor Toland for four or five different classes – economics was one of them,” said Fuhrman. “He was down to earth…he made me understand it. Whenever there was a choice, I picked him for class.” It’s that education that has brought her far in life. Since becoming Store Mary (Reisdorfer) Fuhrman Director for Hy-Vee, she has become a part of the community in Davenport. She feels it’s a priority to be a part of giving back to not only her own community, but to SMSU. “Someone gave to SMSU when I was a student. As an alumnus, that’s my responsibility now. It’s important to make sure students have everything they need,” said Fuhrman. “It’s about keeping the college up-to-date to promote more students and ensuring future generations.” Fuhrman also wants the current generation, especially graduating seniors, to enjoy their time at SMSU, knowing that this is a once in a lifetime experience. “Don’t be in a hurry,” she said. “Have fun and enjoy your last year and your friends. The next phrase of life will still be there.”

Reflecting on a

decade Dr. David Danahar came to Southwest Minnesota State University on July 1, 2001 as the eighth permanent president of the institution. He will conclude a 41-year career in higher education on June 30, 2011 when he retires. He is the longest-serving president in the history of the university — 10 years. His leadership and vision have transformed the university over that time, in both obvious and invisible ways. New buildings dot the campus, renovations to the library and science labs are complete, infrastructure improvements are in place, popular new academic programs have been added, academic outreach has occurred, scholarships offered to students through the SMSU Foundation have increased, the visibility of the university has been raised considerably, and bridges to the community and region have been solidly established. President Danahar has three children: daughters Deidre and Rebecca and son Michael. His wife, Cecelia, has been very active at SMSU, as well. They plan on moving to upstate New York after his retirement. President Danahar took some time recently to sit down and discuss his presidency at SMSU. Q. What interested you in Southwest Minnesota State University in the first place? A. First, the people. I also knew it was a relatively new institution that had a boisterous history. That was both interesting and curious. And I thought the match for where I was at in my career and what the institution might want from a president might be a good one, though I had no idea what I was going to get into. Q. Your career took you from the East Coast to Louisiana and to Minnesota. What are the differences you’ve noticed? A. The biggest change for me was change, period. We’ve made so many moves that making one more was not as substantial as it might have been. People asked me, ‘How can you go out to Pictured in their home is David with his wife, Cecelia. Looking on is their dog, Ike.

We’re not the best advocates for our own situation. But if you cut higher education, in the short run it looks like there’s not a lot of damage, but in my opinion, it does huge damage in the long run. I’d like to see that trend reversed, but I don’t see it anytime soon. There’s the presumption the economy is not turning around as quickly as people would like. Higher education is the economic engine, locally and in the region.

This is a wonderful community and region for families. Q. What were some things you learned, immediately, when you became president? A. The first clear thing is that you’re alone. Decisions — good or bad — will fall on you. The second is that it’s absolutely fundamental to you surround yourself with people who are brighter than you, and that you get them to challenge you. The third thing you learn is to say ‘Oops, I made a mistake’ and move on. There are a number of other things, but those are three you come to terms with right away. Q. You’ve had to make budget cuts every year as president. Why isn’t higher education supported more at the state level? A. That’s a difficult question. It’s not in the same category as questions of health, safety, questions of basic education, K-12. (Higher education) is not there, though I think it should be there.

Q. Is it fair to say that the fire on Jan. 2, 2002 in a number of ways has defined your presidency? A. Some have said that, yes. I prefer to say it gave me an opportunity to do some things that I might not have had the opportunity to do. When the fire was out after several days, it was clear we had to do something with student dining and the Student Center. The fire allowed me, the campus community, and the community of Marshall to get to know each other more quickly. Should that be the measure of my presidency? No, that issue is much more complicated than a fire. I think if you look at what I’ve done over 10 years — or haven’t done, depending on who you are and what you’re looking for — I think that’s the measure. Is it a better institution, a stronger institution? I think all of those things are a part of it. Q. You’re credited with changing the culture of the university — pulling it together and lifting morale. How did you do that? A. I wanted to convey to people that whatever the situation had been, it was a new time, a time for us to work together and trust each other. I am known to be direct, and some people have come to appreciate that. Then people saw that we could do things — whether it was a new residence hall, Conference Center, Student Center, academic programs, any number of things — they rallied behind it. Another focus was the beautification of the campus — curb appeal. I’m not averse to saying how important that is, and people notice that. Q. How has technology changed education during your career? A. When I began my career, there wasn’t really any of the technology as we know it today. Today there are Smart Boards and courses taught wholly or partially online. Students are far more technologically savvy today than they were 10 and 20 years ago, and their expectations are greater. Then there’s the issue of how do you manage all of this? Not only from the point of view of using it, but

paying for it — that’s the most explosive budgetary item. I don’t think technology has made it easier to be a student today. I think it’s more challenging. You have to manage the technology. I look at my own son [Michael]. He’ll be working on his computer, listening to his iPod, and talking on his cell phone. Students aren’t afraid of technology. I’m a great supporter of technology. It is something students today grow up with, just as a lack of technology was how my generation was brought up.

I‘m most proud of the fact that this is a different, stronger and more complicated institution than when I arrived.

Q. You’re known for your sense of humor. Is that something that’s helped sustain you throughout your presidency? A. Absolutely. I grew up in a house where my dad said you always have to keep your sense of humor. You have to remember people are people. We all make mistakes sometimes, say things we might regret, but we’re all very human and we have to keep that in mind. I used to put that [a sense of humor requirement] in a lot of employment ads. Human Resources didn’t always agree with me. It’s the way you get through things. Even in the very grim moments of our lives, if you can bring a little humor at some point to the table, that’s a real help. Q. You successfully battled cancer recently. How did that experience change you? A. It was a shock, but at some point I simply said, ‘I have to deal with this.’ I had tremendous support at home. The medical world I dealt with was very good. It was an eye-opener. It made you look at your mortality. It was also an eye-opener in that you began to see you were not alone. No cancer is good; it’s all bad. Some is worse than others. I didn’t make a big issue out of it; that’s not my way. I’d come in [to the office] the afternoons following radiation. I did that to keep myself preoccupied. I put 5,000 miles on my car and the cars of people who helped me drive back and forth to Sioux Falls — five

days a week for six weeks. There were people who stepped up who I appreciate and will never forget. Q. What accomplishments stand out for you in your presidency? A. I‘m most proud of the fact that this is a different, stronger and more complicated institution than when I arrived, and that I had a role in causing that to happen, in a positive sense. There’s not one facility I’m prouder of than another, it’s the collective effort that went on here. With all the adjustments we’ve had to make in terms of our resources, the overall continuing positive attitude of my colleagues here — the students, staff and faculty — you can’t put a price on that. That’s a very special thing. Q. You have a history background. How do you hope that history will remember you? A. As a good person who tried to do the best he could for the institution he was serving. I don’t think anyone has the full endorsement of the people they work with. I understand that. But that’s how I’d hope to be judged. 3

Foundation Annual Report 2009-2010 Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends, The Southwest Minnesota State University Foundation is pleased to share with you our 2009-2010 Annual Report. As we start a new year, we would like to thank and recognize those whose time, talents and financial contributions have so generously supported the University. This past year saw the Foundation investments begin to rebound from the economic challenges of the past few years. The SMSU Foundation received $2,726,763 in contributions, revenue and support this past year, made possible by the generosity of 5,638 donors. This generosity allowed the Foundation to contribute over $3 million back to the University with over $730,000 going directly to student scholarships. Overall, we were pleased to show modest growth in the total net assets of the Foundation from $6,682,031 to $6,839,030. As you read through this report, please note all of the individuals and businesses that have so generously supported Southwest Minnesota State University. While this report lists only those donors who have given over $100 or more this past fiscal year, a complete listing of all donors is on display in the Alumni Heritage Gallery located on campus in the Student Center. No matter what the size of the gift, please know that each and every gift is important and appreciated by SMSU. On behalf of the SMSU Foundation Board of Directors, thank you for your all that you do to make Southwest Minnesota State a great University. Sincerely,

Bill Mulso Executive Director SMSU Foundation

Former Player Returns to Court

Volleyball Regional Tournament For the first time in the program’s history, Southwest Minnesota State University hosted the Division II Central Region Volleyball Tournament Nov. 18-20. SMSU was awarded the host site by being ranked the top seed in the region. Eight schools competed, included SMSU, the University of NebraskaKearney, Concordia-St. Paul, Minnesota State University, Mankato, Wayne State, Metro State, Colorado School of Mines and the University of MinnesotaDuluth. The Mustangs took on Colorado School of Mines opening night, winning 32. They fell to Nebraska-Kearney in the semifinals. Concordia-St. Paul would go on to win the tournament and, eventually, its fourth straight national championship. SMSU head coach Terry Culhane suffered a heart attack following the opening-round game. He was taken to a Sioux Falls, S.D., hospital and missed the rest of the tournament. Culhane is back on the job, and his heart attack resulted in an emotional day for the Mustang women when they played in the semifinals. The Mustangs had a great following this year, and were ranked in the top five nationally in attendance. The Central Region tournament was held in the PE gym and brought in a big following of volleyball fans from across the region. Over 1,500 saw the SMSU vs. Nebraska-Kearney match. Athletic Communications Director Kelly Loft was pleased with how the tournament ran. “It went very smoothly; everyone in the SMSU Athletic Department was happy with the way things ran the entire weekend. We did our best to create a great experience for all student-athletes, and worked to make it a unique and successful tournament.” The Mustangs were ranked as high as second nationally, and were ranked every week during the season. They ended the season ranked seventh. The NSIC had five schools ranked in the top 25 at season’s end.

Shauna (Wendland) Rhinesmith has always managed to keep volleyball in her life since her days as a player. Since graduating from Southwest in 1990, she stays connected to volleyball in many ways: as co-owner of Metro Volleyball Officials Shauna Rhinesmith Association that coordinates referees for local and national tournaments in the metro area; as an official for high school, juniors, and college volleyball; and as the parent of volleyball players. Recently she found herself back in the PE Gym, not in the stands, but on the court as an official in the NCAA DII Regional Volleyball Tournament hosted by SMSU. She’s currently the only PAVO nationally-ranked female official in the state of Minnesota. She was the lead official for the SMSU v. Colorado School of Mines and was selected to officiate the championship match on November 20, 2010. Southwest didn’t make the final round, but some longtime Mustang fans may have recognized a familiar face on the court that night. “It was just awesome coming back to officiate on the court where I played,” said Shauna. “It’s all business on the stand, but I enjoyed seeing some familiar faces in the crowd. SMSU really hosted a great tournament, and the atmosphere in the gym was the best I have experienced at this level.”

Athletics’ Civic Engagement Efforts Earn National Recognition Southwest Minnesota State athletics has enjoyed a great deal of success on the field of play in recent years, but just as important has been SMSU athletics recent involvement in civic engagement with Marshall and the surrounding communities. SMSU Athletics has created events designed to involve local communities in Mustang home games. The success of the community programs has been recognized nationally. The NCAA has twice honored SMSU as one of the top civic-engagement institutions in the country. “We are very proud of our commitment to Civic Engagement at SMSU. Civic Engagement is about engaging the SMSU community in activities that promote and enhance the quality of life in Southwestern Minnesota,” said Tim Steinbach, athletic development director at SMSU.

Since 2007, SMSU has hosted Ag Bowl during the fall season to celebrate agriculture in southwestern Minnesota. The event features a punt, pass and kick competition and a state-sanctioned pedal-pull for kids, as well as pony rides, petting zoo, mechanical bull riding, inflatable games, great food, music and more. SMSU hosts the annual Smokefest, during the fall season, a BBQ contest that features nearly 50 cooking teams competing for cash prizes. The event is open to the public and features a beverage and food tent along with live music. In 2009, SMSU initiated Mustang Mail, a “mentor-type program.” Over 300 SMSU student-athletes exchange letters with elementary students to help promote SMSU athletics and encourage improved literacy in area schools. Leadership is a complex proposition but at its core it is built upon and driven by trust, and trust has been the hallmark of my presidency.

Parting WORDS

These past ten years have passed much too quickly, but they have been filled with many wonderful experiences. Perhaps the most rewarding experience has been my success in leading this unique and always challenging institution. Hardly a day has passed from my arrival in the summer of 2001 to the present without some enjoyable or pointed encounter with a colleague, or some unexpected turn of events requiring immediate attention. Whether these encounters or turn of events contributed to my success as a leader will be a matter for others to judge, but from my perspective they enriched and strengthened my presidency and my ability to offer direction. Leadership is a complex proposition but at its core it is built upon and driven by trust, and trust has been the hallmark of my presidency. There are many things that I might note about my time here at Southwest Minnesota State University, but I will limit myself to a few brief comments. I have had the fortune to work with some truly exceptional colleagues, individuals who have dedicated their professional lives to our students and to their continuing success. They are teachers and scholars who have never lost sight of their principle responsibility to meet and challenge the intellectual potential of students. At the same time these colleagues have been generously supported by a community of alumni and friends who annually provide extensive financial assistance and ongoing encouragement to move to new levels of achievement. I am deeply indebted to these colleagues, alumni and friends. They have been fundamental to my successes and they, along with our students, are the foundation for the future success of Southwest Minnesota State University. It has been an honor to serve as President of Southwest Minnesota State University and I offer my profound thanks to all who have supported me as I carried out my responsibilities. With very best wishes,

David C. Danahar President
