ACADEMIC SUCCESS PROGRAM

IL 224D / 507-537-6139 www.smsu.edu/go/asp

Applicants whose academic profile does not meet SMSU’s regular admission policy may be selected to participate in the Academic Success Program. SMSU understands that these students have the potential for academic success, but need additional support in making a successful transition to the expectations of university life. The Academic Success Program provides focused academic advising and instructional support, and requires enrollment in IDST 110-The University Experience during their first semester. This 2-credit orientation and transition course is designed to assist students’ integration into the SMSU community and strengthen skills for academic and personal success. Academic Success Program students must complete this course with a grade of “C’’ or better. In addition, students also work with a designated advisor to set and achieve their academic goals and enhance their foundation for lifelong learning. ACCESS OPPORTUNITY SUCCESS (AOS)

Commons East / 507-537-6169 www.smsu.edu/go/aos

The mission of the AOS program is to provide a TRiO SSS Best Practices program for outreach/recruitment and retention of underrepresented students (low income, first generation and students of color). The program provides advising and supportive services to enable participants to be retained, SMSU graduates, and to enroll in graduate and professional programs where appropriate.

Tutors are prepared to assist with a range of speech related issues including brainstorming topics, preparing outlines, developing slide presentations, and refining delivery techniques. Online remote tutoring is available for online students and all other students who have access to a computer with web conferencing capabilities. SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION

IL 224D / 507-537-6139 www.smsu.edu/go/success

Supplemental Instruction (SI) involves utilizing a model student-peer who has recently and successfully completed a course to attend the course a second time and lead peer-facilitated study sessions over the course content outside of regular class hours. Since 1973, the data supporting the effectiveness of supplemental instruction has remained consistent; on average, students who regularly attend SI sessions earn a half to a full letter grade higher and earn D’s, F’s, and withdraw from courses less frequently than students who do not attend SI sessions (Dawson, 2014). Additionally, the University of MissouriKansas City, after years of implementing their supplemental instruction program, reported a 7.8 percentage point overall increase in retention and $1.6 million return on investment (Civitas Learning, 2019). For more information about supplemental instruction at SMSU, visit our website.

Online options include an “online meeting/ chat” appointment in real time with audio/ visual options, chat, and an interactive white board where you can share your paper, or “eTutoring” appointments, during which the tutor reviews the paper and sends comments back (you do not need to be present—it’s like an appointment for your paper). The tutors work with you at any stage of the writing process. They can help you identify a topic, brainstorm, organize the ideas, learn how to cite appropriately, use punctuation correctly, or just review a draft.
