Gold Rush Days at Southwest Minnesota State University is a new student orientation program intended to help you transition to life as a Mustang. Over these four days you will have the opportunity to participate in various events that will assist you in navigating the campus, connecting with new and current Mustangs, faculty, staff and the Marshall community, all while having a blast!

Gold Rush Days is an inclusive program intended for all students. First year, transfer, international, domestic, graduate, undergraduate and non-traditional students are welcome and encouraged to participate. No matter how you got to SMSU...

MUSTANG MOVERS: Available from 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM! The Mustang Movers consist of Orientation Leaders, SMSU students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the Marshall community! They’ll help you unload your car and bring it to your room FREE OF CHARGE! RESIDENT ASSISTANTS: Your Resident Assistant (RA) will be in the lobby of your residence hall. They are your guide to living on campus! If you have questions about lofting, furniture, or anything else about living in the residence halls, they are here to help you!

Temporary parking is available on Birch Street as you move in. In order to accommodate all students moving in, please move your vehicle once it is empty. You can park in the lots located on the East and West ends of campus.

Please be sure you do not park in a “Reserved” spot. (See map on back)

You’ll also notice a number of people with “Ask Me” buttons who are also there to help answer questions and guide you in the right direction this weekend and throughout the first few weeks of classes!

FREQUENTLYASKEDQUESTIONS When does my Fall Semester bill have to be paid?

A: Students must have met the minimum payment criteria by August 1, 2016. Minimum payment criteria can be viewed at www.SMSU.edu/PaymentPolicy .

How do I go about finding a job on campus?

A: First, check to see if you have been awarded work-study, which is granted through the FAFSA. You can find your award letter under the “Financial Aid” tab on e-services. Campus job openings for both work-study and regular pay will be posted on our website, then search “student employment.” It is up to you to contact the departments or areas in which you are interested and ask if they have any jobs available.

How do I get paid for the work-study hours I work?

A: All student workers are paid via direct deposit. You will receive a direct deposit every two weeks for the number of hours worked. Most students work an average of 8-10 hours per week and get paid $9.50 per hour.

When will the overage from my financial aid become available?

A: All financial aid funds will be applied first to the charges on your account. Any funds remaining will be directly deposited into your bank account (savings or checking) on September 2, 2016. If your refund is printed by check, it will be mailed from SMSU on September 2, 2016. Students are encouraged to fill out the direct deposit form online through e-services.

When should I buy my books?

A: The Barnes & Noble Campus Store will be open during Gold Rush Days for new students to purchase their books. (Hours on page 11) Students may rent or purchase new or used books from the bookstore, and digital books may be available.

Can I change my meal plan if it is not right for me?

A: YES. Meal plan changes for Fall Semester may be made through Monday, September 5, 2016. Meal plan changes for spring semester can be made the last two weeks of fall semester through the first two weeks of spring classes. These requests need to be submitted in writing to the Dining Services Office across from the Residential Restaurant on the first floor of the Student Center.

When do meal plans start?

A: Meal plans begin Thursday, August 18, for the evening meal.

Meals from your dining plan can be used in the Residential Restaurant located in the Student Center. The meal plan week starts on Saturday and runs through Friday. Your meal plan will start over each week. Your meals do not carry over from week to week.

How do I use my Mustang Money?

A: Mustang Money can be loaded on your Mustang ID card and used just like CASH to purchase anything at the Barnes & Noble Campus Store, The Mustang Zone, all campus food venues including the restaurant, Coffee House and convenience stores, even snack vending machines. Mustang Money also gets your laundry done in the Res Halls, increases your print quota at the TRC and can be used at the Cashier’s Window. Mustang Money is the easy way to make purchases on campus without carrying cash. For more information or to add more Mustang Money visit www.smsu.edu/mustangcard.

Are there things to do on campus after Gold Rush Days?

A: YES! Gold Rush Days are just the beginning! Different groups will offer programing throughout the year ranging from concerts to game nights to service projects. Your RA will also host programs in your Residence Hall, and you’re invited to attend other hall’s programs as well. Don’t be afraid to try something new!

The Technology Resource Center (TRC) can help you get connected to campus wifi, access your SMSU email on your mobile device, download virus protection and Microsoft Office for free! Bring your laptop, smart phone, tablet, etc. to the TRC for assistance or call the help desk (507) 537-6111.

Although many of you have registered for your fall classes, some have not.

Information regarding August Registration on Wednesday, August 17, will be mailed to students prior to the program. You will need to RSVP by visiting www.smsu.edu/go/registration. If you have questions about registration, please contact the Office of Admission at 1-800-642-0684 ext. 6286.

FINANCIALAIDINFORMATION

Check the status of your financial aid via e-services at www.SMSU.edu. If your award has not been finalized, your loan is not certified, or you have questions, please contact the Financial Aid Office at 1-800-642-0684 or 507-537-6281. The Financial Aid Office is open Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
