Title: A Novel Approach to Poetry
Title: Ready, Set, Go!
Description: While poetry sometimes has a negative connotation in the secondary classroom, contemporary poetry has the power to connect reading to students’ lives. This research will explore how introducing poetry through the relatively new genre of novel in verse can impact the reading engagement and identity perspective of middle grade students.
Description: The focus of this action research project was to see how movement impacted student achievement in an elementary reading intervention classroom. Come and find out different movement activities I did with my students before their reading lessons each day and the impacts it made.

Title: Effect of Staff Engagement Activities on Staff Morale
Title: Enhancing Learning Abilities By Using Exercise
Description: This Action Research explored the impact of boosting staff morale on student achievement. The researcher implemented team-building activities in an effort to boost morale of staff and grow a positive school climate and culture. In turn, engaged staff then created a positive climate for students to learn and engage.
Description: This project shows the effectiveness of exercising during the school day to enhance learning. First grade students participated. I started at the beginning of the school year and did different exercises and activities throughout the day. Studies show that exercise can enhance learning and release endorphins to stimulate brain growth.

Description: This research analyzed the impact of SEL on CCR in my Language Arts course by using SEL curriculum and assessing through student surveys, guidance counselor, feedback, and individual conferencing with seniors who intend attending a community college, trade program, military enlistment, or directly joining the job force after graduation.
Description: This was an investigation into implementing a Child Study Team and how child find can be a more effective process. This was designed to help with documenting, implementation, and interventions for students struggling academically. Title: Leaders of Their Own Learning: A Growing Trend
Description: Does additional training for law enforcement improve interactions with those in a mental health crisis? As police in America face growing calls for enhanced mental health training, we will examine the Mental Health First Aid program and its impact on officers’ attitude, knowledge, and confidence towards mental health calls.
Description: Student-led conferences allow students to selfreflect on their learning, set academic and social goals, and gain leadership skills. In return, families will have a better understanding of their child’s goals. This research will show the results of a study of second grade students and steps to increase reading fluency scores.

Meet the Facilitators WADENA LEARNING COMMUNITY Dr. Dennis Lamb is in his 39th year in education and his 19th year with SMSU. His teaching background is in elementary education, having taught 5th and 6th grade for eight years and served as elementary principal for four years before transitioning his career to higher education. He taught in two private colleges in Iowa before joining SMSU in 2002, where he directed an offcampus elementary education degree program at Central Lakes College in Brainerd. He now facilitates learning communities in the north central part of the state. A career highlight occurred in 2013-14 when he was granted a sabbatical and was a visiting professor at Udon Thani Rajabhat University in Thailand for five months. He currently resides in Baxter, MN with his wife, Joni, and has two daughters and one granddaughter. Denny also teaches in the Brainerd Learning Community.

Melanie Stier attended Minnesota State University Moorhead for her undergraduate degree in elementary education and also earned a 5-8 math specialty. Melanie was part of the Brainerd Learning Community through SMSU and completed her Master’s degree in 2009. She currently teaches 2nd Grade in Osakis, MN and is in her 18th year of teaching. Melanie lives in Osakis with her husband, Matt, two children, and two Labrador retrievers.

Meet the Facilitators WEST CENTRAL LEARNING COMMUNITY Dr. Tanya Yerigan is a career-long educator with a background in education, business, and social work. With 25 years of K-12 and higher education experience, she is a wellrounded professor that has worked with educators from several states. Tanya’s favorite part of working with practicing educators is watching them become full blown researchers. As an avid researcher and author, Dr. Yerigan’s current areas of interest include toxic stress, childhood trauma, educator misconduct, and critical thinking through reflective practice. Fall 2022 will mark her 24th year with SMSU. Tanya also serves as the Education Department’s Graduate Director.
Scott Jans has been a co-facilitator with Dr. Tanya Yerigan for 18 years. He has also been a math teacher and track and field coach at Yellow Medicine East High School for the past 30 years. Scott has three children, a 28 year-old daughter, and sons of ages 24 and 19. Scott resides in Granite Falls.

SIOUX FALLS LEARNING COMMUNITY Dr. John Engstrom currently leads learning communities in Sioux Falls, SD. He taught History, Economics, and Psychology for 14 years, served as a coach, and was also active in staff development, peer coaching, and mentoring. During this time, he completed his Master’s degree in the SMSU Learning Community program. John holds a doctorate in leadership, with an emphasis in organizational development.
Laura Roelike attended Minnesota State University Moorhead for her undergraduate degree in elementary education with a pre-primary specialty. Laura has been a student in two learning communities through SMSU, earning a Master’s Degree in 2017 and a certificate in Educational Administration and Leadership in 2020. She has worked as an elementary teacher in a variety of grades and is currently the Teaching and Learning Coordinator for Albany Area Schools. Laura lives in Freeport, Minnesota with her husband and son.
RED LAKE LEARNING COMMUNITY Dr. Bruce Locklear is a professor at Southwest Minnesota State University in their Educational Administration Program where he works with aspiring school administrators. He also serves as CEO of Locklear Educational Services. Bruce has had great success as a teacher and administrator. After completing 10 years of teaching, he began his administrative career at Delano High School, serving as principal. He then moved to Blaine High School where he was AD for one year and became the principal the following year, where he received National Blue Ribbon school recognition. He concluded his K-12 experience at Edina High School, serving as principal for 10 years. Edina became one of the most decorated and top high schools in the country, receiving recognition from US News and World Report and Newsweek. The greatest gift to Locklear is being a husband and father. Locklear is married to Dawn, and they have two daughters, Brittany, and Bethany.

Meet the Facilitators EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION & LEADERSHIP LEARNING COMMUNITY Dr. Chad Anderson has served schools at many levels during his career. He is currently a Superintendent of Schools and has also been a Principal, Athletic Director, Dean of Students, Teacher, and Coach. He is also currently serving as an adjunct professor at SMSU in the Administrative Licensure program. Each position has bolstered his overall knowledge and understanding of the K-12 Educational System which is instrumental in fostering the knowledge and growth of prospective school leaders. Dr. Anderson is passionate about his involvement in local organizations because each committee works towards strengthening schools in Minnesota. Dr. Anderson is also very active in his community. Dr. Anderson is a servant leader who involves all members of his leadership team in the process to make his school a happy, healthy, and safe place where all students can reach their fullest potential. His philosophy is that together all members of a school and community can make a lasting impact on students during their educational journey.

Heather Anderson is a professor in the educational administration licensure program. She has been a professor at SMSU for three years, but she is not new to SMSU by any means. She earned her B.S. in Communication, Arts/Literature Secondary Education, K-12 Reading Licensure, M.S. in Educational Leadership, and ED.S in Educational leadership and administration all from SMSU. Heather is currently an elementary principal and a former English/Language Arts teacher. She was a Minnesota Teacher of the Year nominee and her unique classroom was featured on WCCO’s Finding Minnesota segment.
Mrs. Mayer is a wife and mother of seven and lives in beautiful lakes country, MN. Her collegial journey started at Mayville State University and has continued through SMSU, MSUM, and Bethel University. Mrs. Mayer has served as the Elementary Principal, at Menahga Elementary School, since 2015. She strives to be a lifelong learner who puts a large emphasis on relationships first, teaching second. Mrs. Mayer has felt privileged to have been part of SMSU’s EDAL program, for the last 3 ½ years. “It continues to be an honor and privilege to be part of an amazing group of dedicated educators, who are looking for their next path in education.”
