A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MUSTANG ATHLETE

WHITNEY BURMEISTER, 2015 Spring Semester • 9:30 am -

I wake up in the morning feeling refreshed! After a weekend filled with volleyball, I enjoy sleeping in. I eat breakfast, throw on some sweats, and head to campus for an eventful day.

• 10:30 am -

My first class of the day is Human Anatomy and Physiology with Dr. Craner. This is one of my favorite classes because the human body never fails to fascinate me!

• 11:20 am -

After my first class ends, I head to the Human and Wellness Performance Center. Here, I train my client who participates in the Schwan Employee Wellness Program. I love applying knowledge I obtain in the classroom to practical situations!

• 12:30 am -

My second class of the day begins - Introduction to Health and Physical Education with Professor Strate. Immediately after this class is over, I eat my lunch that I packed in the morning and head to my next class.

• 1:30 pm -

Motor Learning and Development is my third class of the day! In this class with Professor Jeffers I learn fundamental motor patterns, which I try to relate to all of the skills in volleyball!

• 2:20 pm -

I’m finally off to the locker room to get ready for volleyball! I get dressed, mentally focused, and warmed up for the upcoming practice!

• 3:00 pm -

Volleyball practice begins! This is my favorite part of the day because I get the opportunity to get better at the sport I love!

• 6:00 pm -

Practice comes to an end and all of the equipment is put away. I need to mentally prepare myself, again, for my last class of the day.

• 6:30 pm -

• 8:10 pm -

I have finally reached my last class of the day – Sport Psychology! I am extremely lucky to have Professor Jeffers twice in one day! Even though I have had a long day, he always keeps me engaged in class! I am also feeling pretty hungry at this time, so I usually have a light snack in this class. My activities on campus are done for the day so I head back to my apartment. I make myself some supper and sit down to watch a little bit of television.

• 9:00 pm -

Now that I am full from supper, I begin working on some homework. With a busy day of classes, I tend to have quite a few assignments to accomplish!

• 11:00 pm -

After diligently working on my schoolwork for a while, I decide to catch some Zzz’s. I feel incredibly blessed for the day I have had and cannot wait to start up again tomorrow!

MUSTANG BOOSTER CLUB CIVIC ENGAGEMENT EVENTS

Mustang Mail

WBCA Pink Zone

Mustang Mail is a pen pal program created and supported by the Mustang Booster Club. All SMSU student-athletes are paired up with students from Marshall Elementary Schools. Students write and receive letters talking about the importance of school, and what it means to be a Mustang. During the spring semester we host “Mustang Mail Day” at each school and all students get the chance to meet their student-athlete pal.

The WBCA Pink Zone is an NCAA sponsored event that raises awareness and funds for breast cancer treatment and research. Each February at a home women’s and men’s basketball double header, the R/A Facility is decorated pink to show support. The teams and cheerleaders wear special pink warm-ups and uniforms to show support for the cause. The women’s basketball team also sells their warm-up shirts to students and fans and donates all the proceeds to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. At halftime student-athletes and coaches gather on the court to donate at least 10 inches of hair to the Locks of Love program.

Mustang Shootout

The Mustang Shootout is a clay shooting competition held annually at Shooter’s Sporting Clays in Marshall, MN. Each year nearly one hundred participants form teams to compete for the best team and individual scores. The Mustang Booster Club helps sponsor the event with proceeds going towards scholarships for student-athletes.

This event is hosted by the Mustang Booster Club with proceeds dedicated to student-athlete scholarships at SMSU. It includes golf at the Marshall Golf Club.

Gold Rush Raffle

The Gold Rush Raffle is SMSU Athletics’ and the Mustang Booster Club’s largest annual fundraiser. The Raffle is the event to be at on SMSU’s campus. A limited number of tickets are sold for the reverse raffle. Live and silent auctions are also included in the event, along with black jack games and a variety of great prizes. The grand prize of $5000 is awarded to the raffle ticket holder whose name is the last to be drawn throughout the night.

Each year nearly 40 barbecue teams descend on Marshall to test their BBQ skills in four categories: pork ribs, chicken, pork butt and beef brisket. Smokefest activities include; kids inflatables, carnival games, music, authentic BBQ offerings and a movie hosted at the Regional Event Center on the SMSU Campus. Since its inception, Smokefest has received the NCAA’s Civic Engagement Award on two different occasions.

Upon graduation from my graduate program, I plan to pursue a career in coaching, at the collegiate level. I love working with students, and enjoy developing them into well rounded professionals. Is my contribution to the Mustang Booster Club tax deductible?

Yes, it may be tax deductible in full or in part. You will receive a gift receipt from the SMSU Foundation for tax purposes.

Where do I go for help?

Additional Information After reviewing your package, you can decide that you don’t want additional seats or benefits. Since you will not use all of the assigned Benefit Dollars, you could apply those funds to the tax deductible portion of your donation. You would not be allowed to transfer the remaining $50 to another Booster Club Member or use it to redeem additional apparel. The additional benefit of Hoofprint Dollars can be used to redeem apparel online. As a Stampede Level member, you would be entitled to use 125 Hoofprint Dollars to spend on Mustang Apparel/Novelty items. If you choose not to use all 125 Hoofprint Dollars, your tax deductible donation would increase by the unused amount. You would not be allowed to transfer the unused balance to another Booster Club Member or use it to secure ticket packages, preferred parking passes or chairback upgrades.
