When one gives to the Mustang Booster Club, they are making a difference in the education and future lives of more than 350 student-athletes. Additionally, they are making a difference in the future success of the Athletics Department and its 17 men’s and women’s sports teams and all that it provides to our university and community. There are many benefits in becoming a Mustang Booster Club member, which include tickets, parking, hospitality, Mustang apparel and a variety of unique, up-close experiences with our athletic program. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MUSTANG ATHLETE

BRIENNA DEHKES, 2014 Spring Semester • 9:30 am -

Alarm goes off telling me it’s a beautiful Tuesday morning! I am not an early bird so it’s very nice being able to sleep in.

• 10:00 am -

After I get dressed I go to the school Café and eat peanut butter toast with banana slices. This is my favorite breakfast!

• 10:30 am -

I report to my first class of the day, Intro to Education.

This is a very fun class and I enjoy the environment of the class room

• 11:45 am -

Class ends and I have a small break between classes.

I head up the library to check my mail and D2L for upcoming assignments.

• 12:30 pm -

Lunch time! Best part of the day because I get to eat with all of my friends.

• 1:30 pm -

My second class of the day rolls around. I have academic writing with Professor Pacheco. I enjoy writing and my classmates.

• 3:00 pm -

Finally my last class of the day, Psychology with Christine Olsen. This is my favorite class of the day because it is so interesting and I plan on majoring in Psychology.

• 4:15 pm -

Happy to be done with my busy afternoon but the day is surely not over. After class I grab a quick snack from my dorm and head back to the library to get some homework done before practice.

• 5:30 pm -

Time to get dressed and ready for soccer! Have to get my mind right and prepared for upcoming spring games.

• 8:00 pm -

Finally, done with practice and I head back to my dorm to shower and eat. Usually I eat soup, chips and salsa for dinner. Sometimes I treat myself to Subway, but being a college student that rarely happens.

• 9:30 pm -

My favorite part of the day is lying in my warm bed and watching Netflix. I enjoy watching National Geographic documentaries or discovery channel. They keep me interested and I love learning new information.

Ag Bowl is a community event that celebrates agriculture in southwestern Minnesota. Ag Bowl offers regional FFA Chapters and individual participants an opportunity to earn post secondary scholarship dollars by competing in the Ag Bowl Scholarship Challenge. The Challenge winners are recognized at Half-time of the Ag Bowl Football Game. Prior to the Mustang Football game, families are treated to a variety of activities at the Schwan Regional Event Center. Ag Bowl family activities include a youth football clinic, inflatable games, pony rides, live music, and barbecue offerings. In addition to the Ag Bowl Scholarship Challenge and Ag Bowl family activities, participants can choose to participate in the Ag Bowl Raffle. All proceeds from the Ag Bowl Raffle are designated to the SMSU Scholarship Fund. Since its inception, Ag Bowl has received the NCAA’s Civic Engagement Award on two different occasions.

MUSTANG BOOSTER CLUB CIVIC ENGAGEMENT EVENTS Mustang Mail

WBCA Pink Zone

Mustang Mail is a pen pal program created and supported by the Mustang Booster Club. All SMSU student-athletes are paired up with students from Marshall Elementary Schools. Students write and receive letters talking about the importance of school, and what it means to be a Mustang. During the spring semester we host “Mustang Mail Day” at each school and all students get the chance to meet their student-athlete pal.

The WBCA Pink Zone is an NCAA sponsored event that raises awareness and funds for breast cancer treatment and research. Each February at a home women’s and men’s basketball double header, the R/A Facility is decorated pink to show support. The teams and cheerleaders wear special pink warm-ups and uniforms to show support for the cause. The women’s basketball team also sells their warm-up shirts to students and fans and donates all the proceeds to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. At halftime volunteers gather on the court to donate at least 10 inches of hair to the Locks of Love program.

Mustang Shootout

The Mustang Shootout is a clay shooting competition held annually at Shooter’s Sporting Clays in Marshall, MN. Each year nearly one hundred participants form teams to compete for the best team and individual scores. The Mustang Booster Club helps sponsor the event with proceeds going towards scholarships for student-athletes.

Smokefest

David & Carol Drown SMSU Golf Classic

Smokefest is an officially sanctioned Kansas City BBQ Society contest held on the SMSU campus and hosted by the SMSU Department of Athletics. In 2011 Smokefest partnered with the City of Marshall’s Sounds of Summer Celebration. Smokefest serves as the central location for Friday evening activities during the SOS week long celebration. Each year nearly 40 barbecue teams descend on Marshall to test their BBQ skills in four categories: pork ribs, chicken, pork butt and beef brisket. Smokefest activities include; kids inflatables, carnival games, music, authentic BBQ offerings and a movie hosted at the Schwan Regional Event Center on the SMSU Campus. Since its inception, Smokefest has received the NCAA’s Civic Engagement Award on two different occasions.

The SMSU Golf Classic is SMSU’s longest running fundraiser. In 2011 the SMSU Golf Classic was renamed the David & Carol Drown SMSU Golf Classic. David & Carol Drown first started the event 29 years ago and remain actively involved in the planning of the event each year. This event is hosted by the Mustang Booster Club with proceeds dedicated to student-athlete scholarships at SMSU. It includes golf at the Marshall Golf Club.

The Mustang Stampede is a 5K Walk/Run through SMSU’s campus that brings together teams, parents, fans, and alumni in support of SMSU’s women’s athletics teams. Participants can join as individuals or by forming fundraising teams and compete for the most team members or most dollars raised.

The Gold Rush Raffle is SMSU Athletics’ and the Mustang Booster Club’s largest annual fundraiser. The Raffle is the event to be at on SMSU’s campus. A limited number of tickets are sold for the reverse raffle. Live and silent auctions are also included in the event, along with black jack games and a variety of great prizes.

The grand prize of $5000 is awarded to the raffle ticket holder whose name is the last to be drawn throughout the night.

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS

• Gifts totaling a minimum of $10,000 are required to establish an endowed scholarship fund.

• Scholarships are awarded from the endowment in accordance with the spending policy adopted by the Foundation. (Currently 5% of the three-year average market value of the endowed fund.)

• Gifts totaling less than $10,000 may be classified as a limited term endowment. Additional contributions will be applied to the corpus until the fund reaches the $10,000 minimum endowment level. No awards are made from limited endowment fund until the balance reaches a minimum of $10,000.

• An endowed scholarship may be named and the criteria may be established by the donor.

• A Scholarship Account Contract will be signed that details the scholarship criteria agreed upon between the Foundation and the Donor.

• All gifts to an endowment shall be irrevocable, unless otherwise approved by the Foundation Board of Directors.

The athletic programs at Southwest Minnesota State benefit the entire university and, in turn, our surrounding communities.

Whether in NSIC or NCAA competition, Mustang athletes demonstrate the SMSU commitment to high quality in both academics and athletics. The outstanding young women and men who participate each season for the Mustangs are building important physical and leadership skills while gaining a superior university education. The Mustangs are working to be the pride of southwestern Minnesota.

Who can join the Mustang Booster Club?

All supporters of Mustang Athletics are encouraged to join the Mustang Booster Club. You do not have to be an alumnus of SMSU or a former student-athlete to join.

What is the difference between a restricted gift and an unrestricted gift?

An unrestricted annual gift supports all 17 varsity sports and helps offset non-budgeted expenses throughout the course of the year. A restricted contribution is made to a sport specific fund, a capital project or an endowment.

Is my contribution to the Mustang Booster Club tax deductible?

Yes, it may be tax deductible in full or in part. You will receive a gift receipt from the SMSU Foundation for tax purposes.

Additional Information After reviewing your package, you can decide that you don’t want additional tickets or benefits. Since you will not use all of the assigned Benefit Dollars, you could apply those funds to the tax deductible portion of your donation. You would not be allowed to transfer the remaining $50 to another Booster Club Member or use it to redeem additional apparel.

The additional benefit of Hoofprint Dollars can be used to redeem apparel online.
