A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MUSTANG ATHLETE

MATT ZAGER, 2013 Spring Semester • 6:30 am -

Wake up to the sound of my alarm informing me of another week coming to an end. I get up, eat a bowl of cereal, take my vitamins and I’m off to campus for the last morning workout of the week.

• 7:00 am -

I’m off to the weight room with the team to get a little stronger than day before!

• 8:00 am -

After weights I shower and head to the residential restaurant to eat some breakfast. I have to enjoy this food since I will be attending three straight physiology classes and I will not have a chance to grab a bite to eat during lunch.

• 8:30 am -

Off to my first class of the day, this class is Exercise Physiology and lasts for two hours instead of the normal one hour class! Being an athlete I find it important in knowing how the body functions when an individual is working out so this class is very interesting to me.

• 10:30 am -

Off to Human Anatomy and Physiology. This is my second class of the day and it’s with Sandy Craner. I try and get a drink from one of the fountains before I go into class to keep my mind fresh.

My last and final class of the day. I finish my day off with another physiology class. Making this day five straight hours of physiology classes! Human Anatomy and Physiology Lab is my last class and it also lasts for two hours like my first class!

Sport: Basketball Major/Degree Program: Exercise Science

Finish with my last class of the day and head to go get something to eat. It seems like forever since breakfast.

Light lunch is open at this time and I usually make myself a sandwich.

• 2:30 pm -

After lunch I head to my car and make the short drive back to my apartment. I am able to get some much needed relaxing time.

• 3:00 pm -

I jump on my computer and check D2L to see what is happening next week in my classes and to see if I have everything turned in that needs to be.

• 4:00 pm -

With only eating light lunch I start thinking of what I want to eat for supper and begin making it.

• 5:00 pm -

After supper and it being Friday I get a chance to go hangout with some of my teammates, I usually call Mitch Weg to see what his plans are for the night.

• 9:00 pm -

Get home from hanging out with teammates and I’m usually pretty tired from the long day so I jump in bed and watch some TV. ESPN is my go-to-show so I can keep up with my favorite teams!

• 10:30 pm -

Time to hit the hay, it’s been a long day and week and I will need the rest to be able to get through the coming week!

SMSU CIVIC ENGAGEMENT EVENTS Ag Bowl Ag Bowl is a community event that celebrates agriculture in southwestern Minnesota. Ag Bowl offers regional FFA Chapters and individual participants an opportunity to earn post secondary scholarship dollars by competing in the Ag Bowl Scholarship Challenge. Ag Bowl Scholarship Challenge winners are recognized at Half-time of the Ag Bowl Football Game. Prior to the Mustang Football game, families are treated to a variety of activities at the Regional Event Center. Ag Bowl family activities include, a youth football clinic, inflatable games, pony rides, live music, and barbecue offerings. In addition to the Ag Bowl Scholarship Challenge and Ag Bowl family activities, participants can choose to participate in the Ag Bowl Raffle. All proceeds from the Ag Bowl Raffle are designated to the SMSU Scholarship Fund. Since its inception, Ag Bowl has received the NCAA’s Civic Engagement Award on two different occasions.

MUSTANG BOOSTER CLUB CIVIC ENGAGEMENT EVENTS Mustang Mail Mustang Mail is a pen pal program created and supported by the Mustang Booster Club. All SMSU student-athletes are paired up with students from Marshall Elementary Schools. Students write and receive letters talking about the importance of school, and what it means to be a Mustang. During the spring semester we host “Mustang Mail Day” at each school and all students get the chance to meet their student-athlete pal.

WBCA Pink Zone The WBCA Pink Zone is an NCAA sponsored event that raises awareness and funds for breast cancer treatment and research. Each February at a home women’s and men’s basketball double header, the R/A Facility is decorated pink to show support. The teams and cheerleaders wear special pink warm-ups and uniforms to show support for the cause. The women’s basketball team also sells their warm-up shirts to students and fans and donates all the proceeds to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. At halftime student-athletes and coaches gather on the court to donate at least 10 inches of hair to the Locks of Love program.

Mustang Shootout The Mustang Shootout is a clay shooting competition held annually at Shooter’s Sporting Clays in Marshall, MN. Each year nearly one hundred participants form teams to compete for the best team and individual scores. The Mustang Booster Club helps sponsor the event with proceeds going towards scholarships for student-athletes.

Smokefest Smokefest is an officially sanctioned Kansas City BBQ Society contest held on the SMSU campus and hosted by the SMSU Department of Athletics. In 2011 Smokefest partnered with the City of Marshall’s Sounds of Summer Celebration. Smokefest serves as the central location for Friday evening activities during the SOS week long celebration. Each year nearly 40 barbecue teams descend on Marshall to test their BBQ skills in four categories: pork ribs, chicken, pork butt and beef brisket. Smokefest activities include; kids inflatable’s, carnival games, music, authentic BBQ offerings and a movie hosted at the Regional Event Center on the SMSU Campus. Since its inception, Smokefest has received the NCAA’s Civic Engagement Award on two different occasions.

David & Carol Drown SMSU Golf Classic The SMSU Golf Classic is SMSU’s longest running fundraiser. In 2011 the SMSU Golf Classic was renamed the David & Carol Drown SMSU Golf Classic. David & Carol Drown first started the event 28 years ago and remain actively involved in the planning of the event each year. The two day event is hosted by the Mustang Booster Club with proceeds dedicated to student-athlete scholarships at SMSU. The two day event includes golf at the Marshall Golf Club and Tyler Golf Club along with post golf activities hosted at the Marshall Golf Club. Post golf activities include; a silent auction, live auction and evening social.

The Gold Rush Raffle is SMSU Athletics’ and the Mustang Booster Club’s largest annual fundraiser. The Raffle is the event to be at on SMSU’s campus. A limited number of tickets are sold for the reverse raffle. Live and silent auctions are also included in the event, along with black jack games and a variety of great prizes.

The grand prize of $5000 is awarded to the raffle ticket holder whose name is the last to be drawn throughout the night.

The Mustang Stampede is a 5k Walk/Run through SMSU’s campus that brings together teams, parents, fans, and alumni in support of SMSU’s women’s athletics teams. Participants can join as individuals or by forming fundraising teams and compete for the most team members or most dollars raised.

Milbank, SD Sport: GOLF Major/Degree Program: Biology Major Psychology Minor Why did you choose SMSU? I first heard about SMSU when my coach introduced me to the golf program and the opportunity to participate. When I visited SMSU, I felt like I was welcomed by the entire campus. Being from a small town, I was very comfortable on campus and in the town of Marshall. I liked SMSU because of the small class sizes, the ability to know the professors on a more personal level, and the opportunities to be in a variety of activities and clubs. The diversity and friendliness of staff and students on campus helped me realize I was in the right place.

What are your plans after graduation?

After I graduate from SMSU, I plan to further my education at a medical school in the Midwest region. I would love to be a pediatrician in a rural community.

Canton, SD Sport: CROSS COUNTRY TRACK & FIELD Major/Degree Program: Exercise Science Why did you choose SMSU? I chose SMSU because I loved the small and family like environment. When I came on my first visit, everyone I met was so inviting and friendly and made me feel like I would fit in great. Later, after my visit, I was contacted and told there was going to be a cross country team added to the athletic program, that's when I knew this is absolutely where I belong. I love it here and I'm so proud to be a Mustang.

What are your plans after graduation?

After college I plan to pursue a career in exercise science or a related health care profession.

La Crescent, MN Sport: SOCCER Major/Degree Program: Exercise Science, Sports Management & Coaching minor Why did you choose SMSU? I knew Southwest Minnesota State University was the place where I belong after playing on the REC stadium on my visit, which is one of the best in the NSIC. I came into the program in hopes to build a new atmosphere and tradition in the soccer program. I made it a goal of mine before committing to be able to leave SMSU knowing I made an impact on this program. The relationships within the athletic department made it apparent to me how being a part of the mustang family is truly a blessing as well.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation I plan to further my education at a graduate program to become a Physician Assistant and work in obstetrics or pediatrics.

The reason that I chose SMSU was because of the people associated with the college and football program. That was the one thing that really stood out from the other schools. Every other school focused on their facilities or uniforms, when really the people are going to make all the difference.

What are your plans after graduation?

My plans after graduation are to start a sports performance academy and train athletes to reach their full potential.

Am I faster than Peschong?

I am definitely 100% faster and more athletic than "choppers".

This will be evident come Saturday's.

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS • Gifts totaling a minimum of $10,000 are required to establish an endowed scholarship fund.

• Scholarships are awarded from the endowment in accordance with the spending policy adopted by the Foundation. (Currently 5% of the three-year average market value of the endowed fund.)

• Gifts totaling less than $10,000 may be classified as a limited term endowment. Additional contributions will be applied to the corpus until the fund reaches the $10,000 minimum endowment level. No awards are made from limited endowment fund until the balance reaches a minimum of $10,000.

• An endowed scholarship may be named and the criteria may be established by the donor.

• A Scholarship Account Contract will be signed that details the scholarship criteria agreed upon between the Foundation and the Donor.

• All gifts to an endowment shall be irrevocable, unless otherwise approved by the Foundation Board of Directors.

After reviewing your package, you can decide that you don’t want additional seats or benefits. Since you will not use all of the assigned Benefit Dollars, you could apply those funds to the tax deductible portion of your donation. You would not be allowed to transfer the remaining $50 to another Booster Club Member or use it to redeem additional apparel.

An additional benefit at the Stampede Level is Hoofprint Dollars that can be used to redeem apparel online. As a Stampede Level member, you would be entitled to use 125 Hoofprint Dollars to spend on Mustang Apparel/Novelty items. If you choose not to use all 125 Hoofprint Dollars, your tax deductible donation would increase by the unused amount. You would not be allowed to transfer the unused balance to another Booster Club Member or use it to secure ticket packages, preferred parking passes or chairback upgrades.

Who can join the Mustang Booster Club?

All supporters of Mustang Athletics are encouraged to join the Mustang Booster Club. You do not have to be an alumnus of SMSU or a former student-athlete to join.

What is the difference between a restricted gift and an unrestricted gift?

An unrestricted annual gift supports all 17 varsity sports and helps offset non-budgeted expenses throughout the course of the year. A restricted contribution is made to a sport specific fund, a capital project or an endowment.

Is my contribution to the Mustang Booster Club tax deductible?

Yes, it may be tax deductible in full or in part. You will receive a gift receipt from the SMSU Foundation for tax purposes.
