STUDENT PARISH

CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

REFLECTION ON THE WOMEN’S STUDENT RETREAT

Hello,

My name is Sam Graf and I am a junior here at Michigan. I am studying music and math, hoping to go into educa on a er I graduate this upcoming December! I had the opportunity to a end St. Mary’s Women's Retreat the weekend of February 14-16th. It was such a wonderful experience! We had me to just be together and hangout: in the pool, for a movie night, doing cra s. But there was also me to connect with God. We heard from different women about the Persons of the Trinity. We got a glimpse of what it means to be a Daughter of God, a Bride of Christ, and to understand more about who the Holy Spirit is.

Being an undergrad at Michigan is no easy feat. It is easy, however, to get swept up in the daily tasks of college life. It’s easy to forget who we live for. This retreat was a me for me to reconnect with God and reorient my priori es. It provided me for me to reflect and just be with God. A er being so caught up in school, my faith life took a backseat. But being around other women on fire for the Lord helped me rekindle my rela onship with God.

On retreat, we had me for Adora on into the odd hours of the night. I spent hours with Jesus in the silence. It was so refreshing, a breath of fresh air. I le retreat feeling that God had made me new and had helped me realign my prayer life.

Coming back from retreat, I have been more inten onal with my me and prayer life. A rela onship with God is a two-way street that requires quality me. Women’s Retreat was a me to slow down from the ni y-gri y daily life of college and just be with God, to have the quality me with God that we o en neglect. I highly encourage everyone, as we prepare for Lent, to make that quality me a priority.

Thank you to everyone who supports our retreat ministries here at St Mary!

God Bless,

ST MARY STUDENT PARISH DEDICATION STORY

One hundred years ago this weekend, on March 1, 1925, at 9:30 a.m., the Right Rev. Michael J. Gallagher, bishop of the Detroit diocese, officiated at the fes ve and formal dedica on of St. Mary Student Chapel. The building where we celebrate Mass this weekend was only the third student-centered chapel built on a public university campus.

The bishop led a procession of visi ng clergy to the cornerstone, around the walls of the chapel on the outside, and then to the sanctuary, blessing the altar and the tabernacle. A ending clerics from throughout the state of Michigan chanted psalms. The solemn high mass following the dedica on featured music selected especially for the occasion and performed by the newly formed student choir under the direc on of the chapel’s first music director, Irma Linnemann. A highlight was a solo rendering of “Ave Maria” by UM alumnus Frank L. Ryan.

The mass celebrant was Rev. David L. Dillon (UM LL.B ’96) of St. Philips, Ba le Creek, who was at the me the oldest alumnus of the University of Michigan in the Detroit diocese. The deacon of the mass was Rev. Timothy J. Bourke, pastor of St. Joseph’s Church, Trenton, Michigan, and the brother of Rev. Michael P. Bourke, the chaplain of St. Mary Student Chapel and the moving force behind the construc on of the chapel. Bishop Gallagher delivered the sermon where he exhorted the students to “be faithful to the prac ce of their religion and loyal in all their du es to the University of Michigan.”

Please note that the Cornerstone Reinstalla on Ceremony will take place on Sunday, April 6, at 3:00 p.m., rain or shine.

Right Rev. Michael J. Gallagher, 1925.
