How do you hear God’s voice?

When I was younger, I never quite understood how people could “hear” God speaking to them. I remember a friend who once said, “The Lord told me to cut my hair.”

I smiled politely, but I was really thinking, “geez, doesn’t God have bigger stuff to deal with – like war and famine and infectious diseases?” Since then, a lot has changed for me and I can see that I was wrong. After all, didn’t Jesus tell us that every hair on our head is counted? (Mt 10: 30).

Also, I can see this: Most likely, my friend’s new hairstyle was only part of God’s transforming work in her life. She had been making some big choices and big changes. She not only experienced a new look, but a whole new outlook.

Deacon Romolo here at St. Mary’s has a wonderful way of explaining divine inspiration. “The Lord laid it on my heart,” he often says. It sounds a little saner than telling people you hear voices. It makes better sense to me, too. We don’t often hear an actual voice, but in some situations, we feel moved to do or say something. Somehow, we just know what’s right.

It takes a little work, though, and the right attitude. I’ve learned that when I’m able to open my mind and heart, that’s when God is able to open my ears. Recently, he’s been sending me an earful. No static, just a strong signal telling me not to sweat the small stuff and not to fear the path I’m on.

For me, the messages usually come through scripture. Makes sense. I’m a word person and God tends to meet us in a way that fits us best. A few months ago, I happened to encounter the same passage from St. Paul three times in two weeks. It’s the one where he tells us to keep our thoughts on “whatever is honorable… whatever is lovely… and worthy of praise”.

(Philippians 4: 8-9). Then, another random thing happened and I was confronted by a similar line from St. Paul, “hold on to what is good.” (Romans 12: 9).

So that’s what I’m doing; just holding on to the good – and noticing, more and more, what an abundance of good there really is in the world. So thanks, God, for the tender care you show us. I’m glad we had this little talk.

Saturday, March 14 Journey with Jesus is a self directed experiential retreat through the life, ministry, sentencing and death of Jesus.

As we prepare for the holiest of weeks, take the time to engage deeply in prayer and reflection.

Journey with Jesus is composed of 10 interactive stations throughout the parish building. All participants will be given a reflection booklet to guide them through a handson experience of prayer which engages all of the senses.

Participants will then conclude the prayer experience with a Lenten lunch and small group discussion.

Due to the nature of this prayer experience, spaces are limited to the first 100 parishioners. Please sign up today on our website.

There is likely to be a waiting list, so if you realize you are no longer able to participate, please let Kelly know ASAP to ensure maximum participation.

Students, we invite you to share your skills with us and gain valuable leadership and professional experience.

St. Mary Student Parish continues to offer student internships in a variety of areas, not just roles in ministry. Available internships include outreach and engagement, family faith formation, graphic design, stewardship and development, music, Hispanic ministry, event planning, retreats and others.

Interns will be paid a stipend per semester. They will also meet with staff members for professional development, will network with parishioners and other students, and will ultimately collaborate on a project to be showcased to the parish.

On Easter Sunday, April 5th, the St. Mary's community will prepare and serve dinner at Crossroads Soup Kitchen in downtown Detroit (learn more about Crossroads at www.crossroadsofmichigan.org). Volunteering at this event is a great way to share in and celebrate the love of the Easter season with over 1,000 Detroit community members and other St. Mary’s parishioners!

PRAY THE ROSARY After Daily Mass on Tuesdays Please help us pray the Rosary on Tuesdays. Reciting this ancient and powerful prayer with others can be a heart-opening experience and a way to promote peace in the world and in ourselves. We will provide you the texts of the prayers if needed.

Many children are part of our Easter meal. Help us give each of them an Easter basket as a special gift from St. Mary’s!

Please donate filled Easter baskets or basket making components (baskets, crayons, chocolate bunnies, etc.). In addition to Easter Baskets, each meal comes with a small bag of Easter Candy. We would greatly appreciate candy donations—mini/fun size wrapped candies are the best.

Larger bars and unwrapped candy are difficult to bag, and can get messy. Please take your Easter basket and candy donations to the parish office by Monday, March 30th.

4. Make a donation.

We will not be offering a bake sale this year. Instead, we ask for your financial support of this communal meal with our brothers and sisters in Detroit. Please make checks payable to: St Mary Student Parish and write “Crossroads Easter Meal” on the memo line. Thank you, as always, for your tremendous generosity.

Flint Family Service Trip Sunday, June 22 – Wednesday, June 25, 2014

The application deadline is March 1 A group of families from St. Mary Student Parish will travel to St. John Vianney Parish in Flint, Michigan to work on a variety of community projects appropriate for folks of all ages. Learn, work, pray, reflect and relax with other families from our parish community.

Work sites may include St. Luke's NEW Life Center, North End Soup kitchen, Boys and Girls Club, Shelter of Flint, Carriage Town Mission and Habitat for Humanity. Children as young as 5 have participated in the past. Please consider joining us for a fun week of making a difference!

Application materials can be picked up in the St. Mary office.
