February 2, 2025 — The Presenta on of the Lord
CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
By Kathy Ann Moilanen & Ed Vuylsteke, parishioners
Sweat streamed down my spine as I fried endless pa es of scrambled eggs in a cement-block hut just outside the garbage dump. Around me, fellow visitors filled styrofoam clamshells with my eggs, plus beans and tor llas to bring to workers at the dump. We ed each meal in a plas c bag and headed out.
As we approached, what we had seen from a distance became real. Kids in cracked, plas c sandals climbed over slippery mountains of trash. They sought such items as plas c jugs likely with remnants of milk that'd been baking in 90-degree sun. In the mounds, I saw the skeletal remains of what looked like a dog; ca le droppings from the absurd vision of a herd "grazing" in the trash; and horrors like sharp-edged cans and glass hidden underneath where bare toes descended as workers scavenged. In the sky, mul ple vultures circled, looking for their own "treasures" below. Huge construc on trucks roared forward and then beeped backward, dumping fresh garbage onto the s nky mounds. Speed is of the essence to get the new, unpicked-over discards.
Seeing our dust-spewing minivan approaching, locals paused their search for recyclables to walk over and gratefully accept our warm lunches. They dug into the food with hands that had just been rummaging through other people's waste. If we hadn’t come that day, what would they have eaten…? Many spent more than 8 hours daily in smelly humidity trying to gather enough cast-offs to provide for their families. When I first heard about a woman pulling a discarded shirt from the trash mounds, then washing and repairing it to sell, I was so proud of her earth-friendly and resourceful accomplishment. But when I witnessed the actual environment from which she pulled this ta ered shirt, I was appalled at what she endured to make a meager living.
Ann Arbor-based “Interna onal Samaritan” is improving the lives of these hard-working Hondurans and pulling them out of extreme poverty. A water tower now provides clean drinking water to the mishmash of humble dwellings dump side. A fresh, new community center provides a safe place to gather and use flushing toilets and a playground. In both Honduras and Guatemala, scholarships allow children with excep onal poten al to spend their days at school rather than digging in the dump. Educa on hopefully will lead to good-paying jobs to help en re families.
Yes, most of these sweet Honduran children had lice crawling in their hair–an endless ba le–but they were clean otherwise and eager to help plant flowers around their new community center and laugh with strangers from the USA. A er enjoying
an Interna onal Samaritan-provided pinata, many generously shared their gi ed candy with children on the other side of a chain-link fence and even with new American friends. At a first -ever restaurant ou ng, Guatemalan teens ate lightly, preserving le overs for family members at home. When I ducked into a corner, embarrassed by my flowing “gi of tears,” even though ul teen boys sought me out to offer a comfor ng hug!! Despite language barriers, a pre-teen boy freely offered me a hand, an cipa ng I’d struggle to stand a er si ng on a curb. Mothers praised God for suitcases full of pre-used clothing strangers brought to them. These warm and lovely folks were generous and though ul and hard-working. Consider a trip to meet these resilient individuals! It is life-changing. Any dona on to Interna onal Samaritan con nues their lifeupli ing work!
St. Mary members since at least 1988, Kathy Ann Moilanen & her husband Ed Vuylsteke visited Guatemala & Honduras with St. Mary’s Interna onal Samaritan trips in May 2023 & May 2024. Their daughter Stephanie joined them to Guatemala. Ed was inspired to religiously study Spanish 2X daily for the past 2 years in an cipa on of even deeper interac ons with our brethren south of the border.
