January 26, 2025 — Third Sunday in ordinary Time
CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
By Fr Dan Dixon, SJ
The first me I celebrated a weekend Mass at St. Mary, I remember the lector saying, “Greet your neighbor by name,” and taking a deep breath. This never works in Catholic churches, I thought.
Then, to my surprise, the Church became abuzz with energy. Students and residents of all ages connec ng as one body of Christ.
In February 2023, St. Mary conducted a survey of parishioners about their experience belonging here. 135 of you responded. We felt the presence of the Holy Spirit in your responses in two ways. First, you really like it here, especially the liturgies and community. 88% of respondents would “strongly recommend” St. Mary to a friend, and 96% agree or strongly agreed that “I feel welcomed and accepted in my Church.”
Second, we sensed the Spirit calling us as a community: it’s me to go deeper. 96% agreed or strongly agreed that St. Mary “provides opportuni es to serve,” but over half reported par cipa ng in a service ac vity quarterly or less. A majority of respondents reported sharing their faith (60%) or invi ng someone to Mass or another parish ac vity (70%) less than twice a year.
Over the past two years, St. Mary Student Parish con nues to grow. Mass a endance and small group par cipa on is increasing across all our communi es, especially among our students. But the Spirit has le us with a lingering ques on: how can we create a culture where parishioners are empowered to share their God-given gi s?
The seeds of our strategic plan were sown. In 2024, three commi ees were formed to help us address opportuni es to grow in the areas of Evangeliza on, Encounter, and Stewardship. Made up of a healthy mix of the intercultural and intergeneraonal diversity that makes our parish unique, these commi ees have bonded over the common goal of strengthening the mission of St. Mary Student Parish. We quickly realized these are not isolated disciplines but part of an integrated, rela onal, and healthy parish. We hope the following framework helps explain this dynamic further:
Invite. To a end Mass or an event at St. Mary, most must be invited. Personal rela onships are paramount in helping folks feel welcome and see themselves belonging here.
Engage. Upon a ending Mass or an event at St. Mary, we hope that both visitors and parishioners are engaged intellectually and spiritually. They should be fed by community and conversa on, faith and (some mes) food.
Deepen. Engaged by their St. Mary’s experience, we hope that many visitors and parishioners will find themselves desiring to grow in their faith and to share their gi s with others, both inside and outside of the walls of St. Mary. With support from the community, we believe the Holy Spirit will encourage them to share their faith with their families, neighbors, co-workers, classmates and friends, whom they will feel called to Invite to join them on their faith journey.
To realize this vision, we need to be prac cal. This year, our focus will be on implementa on. Nine strategic priori es have been outlined, thanks to the good work of our three commi ees. We have already begun implemen ng some. plan ng seeds for this strategic vision to blossom. For example, you have probably sensed our desire to “Engage the parish community through hospitality, fellowship” through the return of coffee and donuts!
Other priori es will require further conversa on and planning. For example, we hope to rehab our website and social media presence in a way that will a ract new student and resident parishioners while increasing engagement with those who already a end. With the support of implementa on teams, we aim to realize our vision by 2030.
We are excited about our emerging strategic plan and look forward to your feedback and ques ons. It has been an honor to be invited to help ar culate this vision and strategic plan for the St. Mary community. Please reach out to any of us with ques ons you may have, or if you would like to be a part of making this vision a reality. Come, Holy Spirit!
