CELEBRATING OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE THROUGH DANCE

Our Hispanic community at St. Mary is celebra ng its 25th anniversary and over this me I have been able to see it grow, get to know it, and love it more each day.

The celebra on of the Virgin of Guadalupe every December is the most important celebra on of the year in our community. Seeing the enthusiasm that its main leaders such as Patricia, Guisela, Magda, Everardo, Leila and Reyna, among others, put into making this important feast of the Mother of Our Lord Jesus an unforge able tribute, is very moving. Not only do they arrive every day for the Novena and Rosary Prayer before 6 in the morning to the Church carrying their rosaries and their delicious breads baked in advance and the delicious tradi onal drinks: champurrado, atole and hot chocolate, but a er praying and singing they go to work hard for all day long.

One of the most beau ful and colorful tradi ons in the tribute to Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Aztec Dance, performed by parishioners of our Hispanic community and their daughters and sons. The leaders of the Aztec Dance, Magda and Guisela, have been preparing several weeks in advance, rehearsing the steps and teaching the new boys and girls who come each year with their mothers to honor and preserve the vibrant tradi ons, rich heritage, and pride of belonging to an ancient culture.

This is why this celebra on of St. Mary Student Parish grows in importance each year. The en re community comes to ask for the intercession of our Patroness of the Americas and this homage is produced, which is at the same me evangelizing and missionary, where tradi on, art, culture, dance, gastronomy, color, devo on and mainly sacriﬁce and love come together.

We invite you to par cipate as every year in this beau ful celebra on that begins with the Novena or prayer of the Rosary and Mañanitas at 6:30 am from December 4 to 12 and culminates with the mass and party on the 12th at 7 pm.

Long live Our Virgin of Guadalupe!

Their costumes are carefully embroidered by Mexican ar sans and they themselves make them with plumes of colorful feathers. They wear maracas on their ankles to mark the steps to the rhythm of the drums and demonstrate their love and devo on to Our Mother of Guadalupe, Mother of Jesus and of all of us Catholics, by dancing.

According to tradi on, the Virgin Mary appeared to a Nahua man named Juan Diego (today known as Saint Juan Diego) in December 1531 on Tepeyac Hill, north of Mexico City, where there was a sanctuary dedicated to the female Aztec deity of the earth, Tonantzin, which means “Our Holy Mother” in Nahuatl and con nues to be symbolically linked to fer lity and the earth. When Catholic missionaries arrived in America, a religious syncre sm took place, the uniﬁca on of two cultures, the European and the indigenous American. Our same Mother from heaven with her dark skin and speaking Nahuatl appeared to Saint Juan Diego and united the hearts of those diﬀerent cultures forever and accom-

We invite you to join us in celebra ng the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe! The celebra on includes a bilingual Mass with guides in English to help you fully experience and understand its signiﬁcance. The event will feature Az‐tec dance and a reenactment of the Virgin Mary's appear‐ance to Juan Diego.

We also encourage you to par cipate in the Novena lead‐ing up to the feast day. On the day of the celebra on, we kindly ask if you can bring a dish to share with the commu‐nity as part of the fes vi es.

COMBINED CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

Thank you to everyone who has already supported St. Mary Student Parish’s Combined Capital Campaign! We con nue to make wonderful progress. As of Tuesday, Nov. 26, 128 parish families have contributed $2.75 million in pledges and gi s. We are now 65% of the way to reaching our goal of $4.25 million! All of this has been accomplished with just 7% of our parish households par cipa ng thus far. Imagine what we can accomplish if all of our parishioners support this historic eﬀort!

This weekend’s Blessing of the Gi s provides an opportunity to honor and thank all those who have contributed to the campaign. As we strive toward our goal of $4.25 million, we will be extending invita ons to supporters from outside the parish – whether that be alumni, parents of students and alumni, or other contributors –to invest in the campaign.

If you have not yet had an opportunity to return your pledge card, consider Jesus’ story of the widow’s oﬀering at the temple in Mark 12: 41-44. A er watching the widow place two small coins, worth very li le, into the oﬀering, Jesus called together his disciples and said: “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything all she had to live on.”

Our combined campaign is not seeking equal giving among parishioners, but equally sacrificial giving. As you prayerfully consider your support to the campaign, please know that every gi is deeply appreciated by St. Mary’s! Everyone’s equivalent of two small coins will look different. However, if all respond with a generous heart – like the poor widow – we will certainly achieve our goal! IMMACULATE CONCEPTION DECEMBER 9

Bishop Boyea has issued a decree to dispense Catholics in the Diocese of Lansing from the obliga ons of the holy day of obliga on for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Concep on on Monday, December 9. So, while it technically remains a holy day of obliga on, Catholics in our Diocese are encouraged, but not obligated to a end Mass that day.

CATHOLIC THINKERS BOOK CLUB

All are welcome to join us on Tue. Dec. 10th from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Loyola Room to discuss "Small Things Like These" by Claire Keegan. This short historical novel is the story of an ordinary man in a small Irish town who discovers the secret of the local convent's shocking mistreatment of unwed mothers and their babies. This situa on is based on real life events that have become known as the scandal of the Magdalene laundries. "Small Things" has been adapted into a ﬁlm of the same name which is currently being shown in the U.S.
