November 24, 2024 — Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
December 1, 2024 — First Sunday of Advent
By Libby Widlak, student parishioner
This past weekend I went on the St. Mary’s undergraduate Fall Retreat. The central theme we focused on was trust. Trust in ourselves, trust in each other, and most importantly trust in God. I had beau ful encounters in each of those themes over the weekend.
I am a senior this year and have been going on the undergraduate Fall Retreat since my freshman year of college. As a freshman, I remember signing up for the St. Mary’s Fall Retreat feeling absolutely terrified. I was a quiet, introverted freshman, convinced that everyone already had friends, and I’d be on my own. But, I took that first leap of faith to go anyway. Now, as a senior and part of the leadership team, I’m proud of how much I have grown in trus ng myself. This weekend, I embraced making connec ons and was open to new friendships, trus ng that my presence had purpose. I was blessed to lead a small group and learned to trust myself in facilita ng the conversa on and crea ng a space of vulnerability and authen city.
On Saturday night, we had adora on with praise and worship, and I was available for intercessory prayer. This experience showed me what it means in prac ce to trust in others. Fellow retreatants came to me with their deepest vulnerabilies, trus ng me with some of the most raw parts of their lives. We held hands, prayed together, cried together, and invited the Holy Spirit into those moments. It was a beau ful witness of trust in my community of faith.
Over retreat, I con nued learning to trust in God in ways I have not before. As a Type A person with my life organized into calendars, spreadsheets, and lists, surrendering control does not come naturally. But I’m learning to let go and culvate a spirit of holy indifference, trus ng that God will place me exactly where I need to be. Looking towards postgradua on life is scary, but I believe that God will walk with me every step of the way. This retreat, centered on trust, reminded me that each leap of faith big or small brings me closer to God’s purpose for me.
“Commit your ways to the Lord; trust in Him and He will act” Psalm 37:5
Fi y-two students par cipated in the retreat, enjoying a wonderful experience filled with joy, connec on, and meaningful moments of faith-sharing.
