November 10, 2024 Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
By Dan Hurley, Parishioner
This year’s elec on cycle has le many feeling angry, alienated and even despondent. Stories abound of people no longer on speaking terms with colleagues, neighbors and even family members. A common and understandable reac on is to hunker down with like-minded allies, despairing about how awful the other side is and how terrible things will be. I have done plenty of this myself, along with a lot of doom-scrolling. None of this is very Chris an, of course. In fact, o en it is the opposite. Fortunately, the Faith Doing Jus ce ministry at St. Mary’s offers many different ways for us to put our faith into ac on and break the doom-and-gloom. One such opportunity begins this week, as we host the Men’s Overnight Rota ng Shelter from Monday, November 11th through Monday, November 18th. During that week, we will provide comfort and companionship to local men who lack safe and warm places to go at night. Parish members will provide food and snacks, play board games and watch movies with the men, and then offer a warm, dry space for our guests to sleep.
I first learned of the overnight shelter many (many) years ago when a friend men oned having spent the night helping out. I thought at the me, “wow, that’s awesome, good for you.” I also thought, “I could never do that.” As me went on, I heard Sunday Readings that talked about how we should be our brother’s keeper, and sermons that spoke of the obliga on to put our faith into ac on. Eventually, I realized that it was not enough for me to just show up each Sunday for Mass-instead, I needed to “walk the walk” in some way. And so, one day, without any deep thought, I signed up.
I remember having some trepida on that first me I volunteered-I had li le experience with homeless people, I didn’t know anyone who would be there, and I brought no discernible skills. Telling myself, “it’s only two hours, you can leave early if it’s bad,” I went. To my surprise (and relief), it was fine. It turned out I did know someone else working that night. And I met several other parishioners, both students and townies. Once I learned to make the coffee, I even had a relevant skill. And I had several enjoyable conversa ons with guests, talking about football, movies, and who knows what else. And when my shi was over, I felt grateful for the opportunity and proud that, even if they were just very small baby steps, I had walked the walk of being the kind of person I was called to be.
Since that first night, I have volunteered many more mes, each me realizing that working with other parishioners at the Overnight Rota ng Shelter (and its companion effort, the Day me Warming Shelter in January) is among the most fulfilling and enjoyable things I can do. Being a part of this effort in my small way has deepened my faith and helped me become a be er person. I have marveled at the generosity of the families that donate food, and the students who give me and effort when I know the semester is ge ng close to crunch me. And when we come together in this way to help feed the hungry and house the homeless, there are no tribes, there is no yelling or noise. There is only hope and love, just as we are called to create.
