STUDENT PARISH

CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

CAN YOU DRINK THE CUP?

Our recent Gospel readings might make us uncomfortable about our possessions, and the things we value, such as power and recogni on. This discomfort offers us an opportunity to consider what we are holding onto too ghtly, and what we value most.

To “drink the cup” that Jesus drinks means living in complete trust and alignment with the Father. It means living simply, caring for those in need, and loving everyone, even our enemies. It means not pu ng ourselves above others, even as Jesus showed us – all the way to the cross.

In last week’s Gospel, a wealthy man approaches Jesus and inquires what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus makes two requirements of the man. First, he must give up his possessions. Throughout history, some Chris ans have taken this literally. Their example witnesses to us a radical commitment to the Gospel of Jesus. Some others have sought to explain the meaning intended by the word possessions as those things that prevent one from following Jesus.

Chris ans have generally understood that at the least, following Jesus requires that believers hold material possessions loosely and remain vigilant against seeking security in accumula ng possessions. Jesus wants us to know that he values the poor, and we should too.

The second requirement Jesus makes is the invita on that Jesus extends to all would-be disciples: “follow me.” Jesus very much wants this man to be his disciple. We believe that the Chris an faith is one in which each believer is in a personal rela onship with Jesus. Just as this Gospel tells us that Jesus loves the man and is sad when he departs, so too, Jesus loves us and is saddened when we are unable to follow him.

We see in these Gospel reading another example of Mark’s pa ern, which shows Jesus offering further elabora on to his disciples. Jesus reminds his disciples that even though the strict

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

ness of his standard is hard, nothing is impossible with God. Salva on is determined by our ability to rely completely upon God.

In this week’s passage, Jesus shows the “upside-down” way to order our thoughts. Things are not as the world thinks. This is how Jesus reveals the reversal: glory is given not to those who seek to be “first among” others but to those who choose to serve others by giving their lives for them. Out of which reversal do we live?

Drinking the cup, he reminds us, will be hard. Being a true follower brings both challenge and reward.

Some ques ons for thought: Can we consider taking an inventory of our possessions? Are there things in our house that we no longer need or use? What might we do with these things?

How does Jesus’ warning about material possessions make us feel? What steps can we take to loosen our grip on worldly possessions, and to show our commitment to the poor?

Jesus asks, “Can you drink the cup that I drink?” What do you think he is ge ng at here? What does he want us to know about living as someone who imitates and follows Christ?

SAFE HAVEN SUNDAY

The most powerful tool we have when it comes to teaching our children about the beauty of their sexuality in the digital age is conversa on. Real, honest, “look them in the eyes” conversaons about their deep ques ons. In the digital age, passive paren ng is not an op on the internet never rests.

Safe haven Sunday is celebrated through prayer and reflec on within the context of the Mass. A er each Mass, each individual and family will be given Covenant Eyes’book, Confident : Helping Parents Navigate Online Exposure. This book includes a free seven-day text-to-opt program that provides prac cal ps for caring adults to create safer digital environments for themselves and young people.
