STUDENT PARISH

CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

MY ENCOUNTER WITH MARY

My name is Rafael Chávez. I am originally from Arequipa, Peru, and I have been living in the United States for 21 years. I want to share with you my encounter with Mary. My father passed away 5 days before my sister was born, I was 2 years old. My mother never remarried because she didn’t want to impose a stepfather on us due to her own bad experience with her stepmother. My mother is a nurse, and thanks to God, she was able to provide us with a private educa on. The bilingual school my sister and I a ended was one of the most pres gious in Arequipa, founded by a Bri sh Evangelical organiza on. No need to say, they did not offer Catholic religious educa on; instead, we had daily openings where we read and meditated on the Bible. They never imposed Protestan sm on the students. Curiously, more than 90% of my class received their First Communion. My mother, a devout Catholic, compensated the lack of catechesis by faithfully taking us to Sunday Mass every week, making it a non-nego able obliga on. That’s how I understood that Mary was the woman chosen by God to be the mother of our Savior, and nothing more. I finished school with a close rela onship with our Lord Jesus Christ, but not with Mary.

I have always admired my mother, not only because she was able to respond our needs but also because she tried to fill the absence of our father. When I le my country I realized the great and uncondi onal love our mothers have for us: Always having a warm meal ready, coming home and being able to hug and feel the warmth that only a mother can express. I understood and valued those years I spent close to my mother and knew how our Lord Jesus could find in Mary, His mother, the same pure and uncondi onal love that God gives us through them.

Years later, I married Gina, a wonderful woman, and when we had our first child, Sebas án, I immediately understood how strong the maternal bond is with their children. Two and a half years later, God blessed us with our second child, but when Gina was eight weeks pregnant, a lump appeared on her back. A er months of inefficient therapy we went to the hospital and were told that it was probably a tumor located at the junc on of the vertebrae and the rib cage.

In the following weeks, we discovered it was a cancerous tumor, a chondrosarcoma. We were referred to a specialist, an orthopedic surgeon. During the consulta on, he never looked us in the eyes or explained the seriousness of the situa on or the possible consequences of the surgery for Gina, including the poten al loss of mobility in one of her legs. When he finished, I looked him in the eye and told him that if he hadn’t no ced, Gina was already 18 weeks pregnant with our daughter. For the first me, the surgeon raised his eyes to look at us and said the tumor was too large to wait for surgery, and the baby wouldn’t survive the surgery. Gina and I looked at each other, not knowing how to respond. Our en re world was collapsing in front of us. It was

impossible for me to choose between Gina’s life or our unborn daughter’s. I asked Mary to give me the strength to respond, and I told the surgeon that we needed a second opinion.

Leaving the hospital, we went directly to the Adora on Chapel of our parish. I asked God to speak to us, to literally send someone to guide us in this moment of darkness and confusion. I prayed, saying, "Lord, I have never asked You to respond immediately, but now, send someone in Your name to tell us what to do."

As we were about to leave the chapel, we saw the parish deacon arrive. We immediately approached him and asked if he had a few minutes to listen to us: we told him what was happening and the terrible decision we were facing. A er listening to us, he said, "Look around and contemplate the wonders that God our Lord has created. For God, nothing is impossible. You must choose to trust in Him or be paralyzed by fear. Hope for the good or expect the bad." At that moment, I knew it was God speaking to us, encouraging us with words of faith.

The day a er, we told our oncologist that we would not terminate Gina’s pregnancy, and we would wait un l our baby was viable to be born. Our oncologist respected our decision and connected us with a neurosurgeon who respected our decision too and explained the risks of the surgery, but with a more humane approach.

You may wonder what Mary had to do with all of this, but it was through her that we found a way to grow closer to faith. Through her, we began praying the Holy Rosary daily, and it was she who helped us endure those nights of anguish and despair, leading us with her motherly love to the feet of Jesus.

A er 38 weeks of pregnancy, Sofia was born, and one month later, Gina went into surgery with five medical teams to remove the tumor, which had grown considerably and surrounded major blood vessels. A er 13 hours of wai ng, the surgery was a success. They were able to remove the tumor, and reconstruct the affected area. Gina was able to leave the hospital walking.

During this en re me, the Blessed Virgin was with us on this dark journey, giving us strength through the Holy Rosary. We named our daughter Sofia Maria Sofia means wisdom, the wisdom God gave us to say NO to abor on, and Maria in honor of the Mother of God, who brought us closer to Jesus.

We later consecrated our family to the Blessed Virgin, and God gave us the opportunity to visit the Sanctuary of Fa ma in Portugal, where the Virgin appeared to Francisco, Jacinta, and Lucia, allowing me to become a Marian Catholic by convic on, experience, and choice.

COMBINED CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

The campaign is a wonderful opportunity to invest in campus ministry, address deferred maintenance, enhance our church and upgrade our facili es as we approach our Centennial Celebra on later this year.
