STUDENT PARISH

CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

MY WHY C , M C P

Why are you here?

I’ve been asked this ques on mul ple mes throughout my college experience. Professors like to ask this ques on rhetorically when explaining the importance of their class to my college curriculum, my friends ask me this when we run into each other unexpectedly, and it is a ques on that is constantly in the back of my head as I carry out my intern role as the Michigan Catholics president.

When I first arrived at St. Mary’s Student Parish my freshman year, I didn’t feel like I fit in. I met some great people, but it felt like everyone else was already so involved and knew each other so well that I couldn’t incorporate myself into their groups. My mentality prevented me from growing closer to the other students despite a ending Michigan Catholics events and becoming a La no Sacramental Prep catechist. It wasn’t un l the second semester that things changed.

I carpooled to the March for Life in Washington DC with a group of strangers. Yes, I had seen them around St. Mary’s, but I had never had a long conversa on with any of them. This all changed once we traveled eight hours in a car together, the ice was broken.

David Mutone, Campus Missionary Disciple; Ma Prince, Peer Minister for IM Sports & Campus Opportuni es; David Caballer, Peer Minister for Faith Doing Jus ce; Paul Ciaravino, Peer Minister for Liturgy & Prayer; Emily Carr, Peer Minister for Social Media; DJ Pearson, Peer Minister for Outreach and Events; Monica Whalen, Peer Minister for Family Faith; Therese Campos, Michigan Catholics President; Abby Widlak, Peer Minister for Retreats; Bailey Burke, Campus Missionary Disciple.

Upon returning to Ann Arbor, I felt more connected. I recognized people at Michigan Catholics events and they recognized me! This led me to mee ng new people and fostering new Catholic friendships throughout my second semester. During this me, a new Hispanic/La no student group (now known as Cristeros) was formed. Our weekly mee ngs fostered a beau ful small group community as we grew in faith together.

My freshman year experience is the first level of my “why” in regards to being involved with Michigan Catholics. I hope that through my involvement I can help connect people with each other so they can immediately feel at home within the St. Mary’s community. It is so much easier to maintain your faith and build a good rela onship with God when you are surrounded by Christ-like friends. I pray that as the Michigan Catholics community con nues to grow we can spread the light of Christ around campus.

My bigger “why” comes back to Jesus the Good Shepherd. The parables were a big part of my faith forma on when I was younger, so I grew up learning that Jesus loves each and every one of us so much that he would leave the 99 sheep to find the one that is lost. He is a shepherd that knows us by name and would not hesitate in giving up his life to save ours. This is why I am here at St. Mary’s Student Parish, because everyone should know the love Jesus has for them.

WOMEN OF THE HEART

All Women of the Parish are Warmly Invited

This year’s Women of the Heart theme will reflect on the gi of WISDOM. Recognizing that the Book of Wisdom ascribes the feminine pronoun to wisdom and acknowledging the vast and diverse wisdom that exists among the Women of the Heart members we decided on this theme. The structure and format of the mee ngs will vary from month to month with some presenta ons coming from parish staff and others from group members either individually or as a group panel.

Women of the Heart will meet on the second Thursday of the month from September through May from 10:15 am to 12:00 noon in Donnelly Hall. Listed below are our mee ng dates, you are invited to a end on Thursday the monthly gatherings your schedules allow: October 10, November 14, December, January 9 , February 13, March 13, April 10, May 8

Should you have any ques ons or would like to be added to our email list, let us know. We are looking forward to another year of sharing and reflec ng on our faith together as Women of the Heart.
