September 15, 2024 — Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 15, 2024 — Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
BY Rita Zyber, OCIA/SCC Coordinator
This ques on from Jesus surfaces in today’s Gospel reading. As Chris ans, all of us must come up with our own answer to this ques on – just as Peter did when Jesus asked the disciples.
And though Peter didn’t quite get the whole plan, he did provide a profound statement that came from his heart and soul. “You are the Christ,” Peter says. He so wants to understand and honor the divinity of Jesus, who is also their friend and teacher.
But just as Jesus begins to teach them more, Peter makes a statement that earns him “rebuke.” He doesn’t like the idea that Jesus must “suffer greatly” and even worse, “be killed.” Peter’s recogni on of Jesus’ greatness is in place, but the suffering part is shaky for him. It doesn’t seem to fit with his idea of who Jesus actually is.
This ques on, “who do you say that I am?” and this focus on Jesus’ ac ve presence in our lives, is a great way to kick off a new season of events, prayer, and worship opportuni es here at the parish – and that includes one program that’s near and dear to me – Small Church Communi es.
I can’t think of a be er way to focus on this idea of who Jesus is then to break open the Sunday readings with other parish members (students and residents). Joining one of our faithsharing groups is a great way to help you define this faith ques on, and other ques ons too – like “where do I see Jesus in my life and out in the world?” Also, “what do I think Jesus wants me to know most about him? What sacrifices have I made to be a follower of Jesus, and can I be doing that be er?”
Grappling with the Word, together with other faith-filled people, is a great way to know Jesus be er.
So now is the me to sign up for one of our Small Church Communi es (SCCs) for the Fall Session. Groups will meet weekly for seven weeks from October through Thanksgiving. There are a variety of mes and days to fit your schedule, plus a couple of other special topics, including an Igna an group that will focus on prayer.
You can see all the op ons and sign up online at this link (or scan the QR code on the following page):

By the way, in Scripture, Jesus gives us some pre y clear hints about who he is. Seven mes in John’s Gospel he provides his own “I Am Statements,” revealing to us who he is, and ul mately who God is:
“I AM the Bread of Life” (6:35)
“I AM the Light of the World (8:12)
“I AM the Gate for the Sheep (10:7)
“I AM the Good Shepherd (10:11)
“I AM the Resurrec on and the Life” (11:25)
“I AM the way and the truth and the life” (14:6)
“I AM the True Vine” (15:1)
Spend a li le me with these and see which one resonates most. Is Jesus a teacher, healer, friend, savior, protector, etc, for you? I hope our Sunday readings for this Fall, and the discussions that follow, will provide some deeper answers than you may have expected. Ques ons? Contact me at rzyber@smspnewman.org
Igna an SCC group: ‘Ascending with Igna us’
This six-week Igna an prayer experience begins on Oct. 9, and runs weekly on Wednesdays to Nov 13. Mee ngs will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Newman Hall. The book "Ascending with Igna us" by Jesuit priest Mark Thibodeaux, SJ will be used. It is loosely based on the Spiritual Exercises of St Igna us. Par cipants will need their own copy of the book and will be expected to commit to daily prayer, reflec ng on the book's theme and topic for that day
The format for each mee ng will include small group sharing, prayer, and a brief guided discussion on the week's topic. The guide for this six-week session is E a MacDonaghDumler, an Igna an Spirituality Director. Sign up on the SCC online form (see link above), or contact Rita Zyber.
Join the regional Eucharis c Ministry Outreach to BRING JESUS himself to the isolated, separated from our worshipping communi es. This ministry to nursing homes, jails, and hospitals is simple, beau ful, and so needed.
