STUDENT PARISH

CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

JESUIT PRESENCE AT ST. MARY

In 2000, the last Diocesan pastor of St. Mary Student Parish, Fr. Tom Firestone, invited the late Jesuit priest, Fr. Dennis Glasgow, S.J. to be Associate Pastor. Five years later, the Diocese of Lansing entrusted the pastoral care of St. Mary to the Society of Jesus. Since then, we Jesuits have had the immense privilege and joy to serve the resident and student parishioners of this incredibly diverse and dynamic parish here in the heart of Ann Arbor.

When I arrived at St. Mary in August 2022, there was some ques on at the me as to whether Jesuits would con nue to serve at the parish. So, I am grateful to be able to announce to you that on May 31, 2024, Bishop Boyea signed an agreement to entrust St. Mary Student Parish to the Midwest Province of the Society of Jesus through June 30, 2029. I believe that this five-year agreement reflects a renewed and deepened trust placed in us by the Diocese.

On behalf of my brother Jesuits, allow me to express my gratude for the trust that you, our St. Mary parishioners, have placed in us as well over these past 24 years. As pastor, I have come to appreciate the great love both resident and student parishioners have for our parish, the deep desire expressed in

varied ways to bring and embody Christ’s compassionate presence to others, and the profound commitment that we share to live a faith that does jus ce.

I could not imagine a be er occasion to celebrate this good news than this Wednesday, the feast of St. Igna us Loyola, founder of the Jesuits. As all of you are part of our extended Jesuit family, let us celebrate together and let us renew our commitment to “find God in all things” and dedicate ourselves to be “contempla ves in ac on,” who seek reconcilia on with God, among people, and with crea on, all Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, for the “greater glory of God.”

With our Centennial celebra on and Capital Campaign on the horizon, we have much to look forward to and much reason to rejoice! Over the past two years, I have witnessed an abundance of God’s grace here at St. Mary and am excited to see what the future will bring! Once again, thank you for your prayerful support of me and my fellow Jesuits. It truly is an honor to be able to serve you. May God bless you and may God bless St. Mary Student Parish!

St. Mary Student Parish is a welcoming, inclusive, caring, and diverse Catholic community, uniting residents and students.

We are Christ-centered with the Eucharist as the source of holiness in our vibrant liturgical life.

Inspired by Ignatian spirituality, we live a faith that does justice, reaching out to the marginalized.

As an apostolic parish, we are committed to ongoing formation of Christian witness, discipleship, and leadership.
