FINDING GOD THROUGH CREATIVE EXPRESSION

As the fullness of summer really sinks in, I find myself so much more inspired to create. Gone are the dreary days of winter; now, an abundance of life bursts forth outside my window: the shush of tree leaves dancing in the wind, the rich orange and pink blossoms decora ng porches and gardens, the steady hums & chirps of bugs & birds. All of crea on, in their own li le ways, sings God’s praises. Perhaps that is why it is easier for me to be mo vated to put pen to paper; the world itself is poetry, most especially alive and buzzing in these summer months.

Last autumn I created a Chris an literary magazine here at St Mary (in collabora on with the Kateri Ins tute for Catholic Studies on campus) called Transcendence. It’s a wee book of artwork, poetry, short stories, and other crea ve expressions of truth, beauty, and goodness. You can find a pdf of our print edi on online and find addi onal works here (bburke431.wixsite.com/transcendence/single-project )

I created it as a way to combine my faith with my love of wri ng; I had hope that others would share in my desire to “find God in all things,” using our crea ve gi s. We had a wonderful launch party at the end of April, and it was beau ful to see our community come together to celebrate crea vity and the arts. I think the arts are one of the ways we live out the fullness of our own humanity; we were created out of love with an invita on to co-create with the Lord.

So that is my invita on to you this summer: create. Dig out an old camera and take some photos of friends and family enjoying each other’s company. Bring your watercolor set to the beach and paint the sunset. Write a poem about the pesky fruit flies that find their way into your kitchen every summer. Whatever it is, let the crea ve juices flow and find God in the midst of it. (And who knows? Perhaps you’ll create something you can submit to our next edi on of Transcendence; our submission window will open again in early August.)

I hope that, by spending a li le bit of me crea ng or capturing something beau ful this summer, you are reminded that, in every crea ve ac on, “you are invited to use your crea ve intui on to enter into the heart of the mystery of the Incarnate God and at the same me into the mystery of man” (St John Paul II, 1999 Le er to Ar sts). May all your works be for the Glory of God!

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

St. Mary Student Parish is a welcoming, inclusive, caring, and diverse Catholic community, uniting residents and students.

We are Christ-centered with the Eucharist as the source of holiness in our vibrant liturgical life.

Inspired by Ignatian spirituality, we live a faith that does justice, reaching out to the marginalized.

As an apostolic parish, we are committed to ongoing formation of Christian witness, discipleship, and leadership.

Thank you to planning study par cipants!

Over the past eight weeks, St. Mary Student Parish conducted a thorough campaign planning study to gauge support for a series of poten al projects related to our church and Newman Center campus as well as our parish wide ministries The poten al effort would be conducted as part of the Diocese of Lansing’s Stewardship for Saints and Scholars campaign.

Thank you to the nearly 500 members of our parish community who shared their feedback through an interview or survey! We are so grateful for your input, which will assist St. Mary leaders in its decision-making regarding a poten al major fundraising effort. In the coming weeks, we will share the results of the study, including findings and recommenda ons provided by our fundraising and development consul ng firm, the Steier Group.

In the mean me, we ask for your prayers for guidance as parish leaders discern the best path forward.

A THANK YOU NOTE FROM UGANDA

On behalf of the Diocese I wish to hear ly thank you for the enormous financial support you have given to Fort Portal Diocese through Miss Naomi Corera of Children Wai ng Everywhere (CWE) the recent one being the construc on of an opera ng theatre at Kyakatara Health Center. Once this theatre is completed and equipped it will allow doctors for the first me in the history of this health center to carry out medical opera ons especially on expectant mothers. Be pleased to know that the financial support you give us is changing the lives of so many people, especially children and other vulnerable groups.

The provision of clean water to diocesan schools through the installa on of water tanks is not only improving the health and hygiene of pupils but also driving the transforma on of these schools in terms of infrastructure, learning and teaching. Without your support it would have been extremely difficult to see the transforma on that we are witnessing today.

Kindly note that Fort Portal Diocese receives 100% of all the funds sent which are in turn fully used for the implementa on of the designated projects.

May the Almighty God bless your generosity.

I thank you sincerely and pray that this rela onship con nues as we labor together in the Lord's vineyard.

Fr. Tadius Musabe

Treasurer General Fort Portal Diocese , Uganda
