THE STORY BEHIND OUR NEW CRUCIFIX … AND THE MAN WHO CARVED IT
By Sonia Zawacki, member of the Church Enhancement Commi eeOne of the first tasks given to St. Mary’s Church Enhancement Commi ee (formed in February 2021 by Fr. Jim Gartland) was to find a crucifix for the church. During our search, we found Mike Kapetan, a local sculptor, teacher (we call him a walking art history encyclopedia!), world traveler, and pursuer of knowledge and beauty. His quest for knowledge encompasses the sciences, ar s c crea on, and the search for divine grace, which permeates all he does. His love for carving wood has spanned his en re life me, beginning at a young age when his parents presented him with a set of Japanese wood carving tools. He has created liturgical pieces for over 70 places of worship, including Catholic, Protestant and Eastern Orthodox denomina ons, a Jewish synagogue, and a Buddhist temple. This is his fi h life-sized, carved crucifix. Mike comes at his work from a historical perspec ve with an ecumenical approach and says that working with these diverse faith groups has only amplified his sense of ecumenism. He is in awe of the faith that drives people to bring art into their place of worship, a phenomenon he believes has been going on since me immemorial!
Mike’s inspira on for the crea on of our crucifix is mulfaceted. The design for the cross was inspired by early Byzanne art; it is called a “story cross” and for this he chose black walnut. It includes side panels of la ce work made from purpleheart wood, upon which has been carved the Jerusalem cross mo f (found in the St. Mary logo). Accents on the crucifix, such as the ‘INRI’ at the top of the cross, and the individual thorns on Jesus’ crown are made of red oak. The corpus has

been carved out of bu ernut wood, about which Mike says, “it’s such a beau ful wood to carve, and is considered the average color of all the races of humanity.” The bu ernut will provide a beau ful contrast to the black walnut of the cross. Mike’s inspira on for the corpus was drawn from the art of El Greco. For the face of Jesus, he turned to Rembrandt, who’s own inspira on for pain ng portraits of Jesus came from the young Jewish men living in his neighborhood. Mike has given special a en on to incorporate mul -ethnic features in Jesus’s face, reflec ng St. Mary’s intercultural iden ty. Lastly, the halo was created from wound copper wire which has been covered in gold leaf.
The enduring, mys cal nature of trees, their symbio c rela onship to humankind, and the vital role of wood in worship of the Divine have inspired people for centuries, and have fascinated Mike throughout his career. As the ar st and sculptor of our crucifix, his central message embodies the Chris an ethos, “As you do unto the least among you, you do unto me.” Mike’s hope is that all who gaze upon it feel welcomed and loved by God, and come to appreciate that there truly is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for a friend.

The current es mate for when the crucifix will be installed is May 20 21 .

Gradua on Mass, Friday May 3, 2024Thinking of becoming Catholic?
We’d love to talk
This is the me of year when many people are making decisions about various paths in life, and o en, they contact us about exploring the Catholic faith.
We welcome seekers and inquirers at any stage, and are happy to talk with you about the OCIA journey. OCIA (formerly known as RCIA), stands for the Order of Chris an Ini a on of Adults. It’s the process the Church has created to help new members join the Catholic faith.
Here at St. Mary, our OCIA sessions help people who may be thinking about becoming Catholic, as well as adult Catholics who have never completed Confirma on. Formal sessions begin in September, but it’s a good me to discuss your journey as a faith seeker and see if we can help you discern where God might be leading you.
Since we’re a student parish, we have many students and young adults who prepare throughout the year. Our sessions are from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays (following the U-M and holiday schedule). Inquirers will be ini ated into the faith at Easter, if they feel ready.
Wondering about the name change?
Most people are familiar with the program’s former name, RCIA. A er the Va can II sessions in the late 1960s, the Catholic Church restored the ancient catechumenate form of educa on for new members. The process was outlined in the Rite of Chris an Ini a on of Adults.
The RCIA book is now being re-translated from the original La n. This is part of an effort started by Pope John Paul II in 2001 and con nued by Pope Francis in 2017. Going over each of the books for the Church’s various rites, the Bishops’ Conferences around the world (including the U.S. Bishops) have been upda ng their transla ons.
The RCIA book is one of the last to be updated, but the U.S. bishops decided in 2021 that the word “order” is more appropriate in the name, in part because the La n name was Ordo Ini a onis Chris anae Adultorum. In the new transla on, the word ordo became order.
The new word is also more comprehensive, emphasizing a con nuous process of spiritual forma on for those who want to join the Church. The individual rites are s ll in place, but the name conveys that the prepara on process is a journey toward discipleship with Christ, not just a series of checkpoints to complete.
Despite the new name, our parish remains commi ed to providing a welcoming, prayerful space for learning and growing in the faith. For more informa on, visit our website and click on the registra on form. michigancatholics.org/to-becomecatholic/
You can also contact OCIA Coordinator Rita Zyber at rzyber@smspnewman.org
Also note: If you are a Catholic who has been away for a while and you’d like to talk about returning to a more ac ve faith life, please feel free to speak with one of our priests. Some mes a good conversa on can make a difference. Their email info is listed each week in the bulle n.
