By David Mutone, Campus Ministry Disciple
Hello St. Mary Student Parish!
My name is David Mutone, and as of August 1, I am officially serving as a Campus Missionary Disciple (CMD) here alongside Bailey Burke. I cannot express how thrilled I am to be in this role at St. Mary, and I hope to meet and get to know lots of you soon!
If you had told me a year ago that I would be serving at this parish for a year following my gradua on in May 2024, I would have laughed! With a BSE in Electrical Engineering from U of M, surrendering a year in the workforce to do mission work on campus doesn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense. And yet here I am! In this Parish Insight, I’d like to briefly share how God enlightened my heart to the needs of His flock here on campus and invited me to tend to them.
“And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it [on] the last day” (John 6:39). I used to be afraid of talking about my faith, especially here at U of M. I was afraid of what people would think and of not knowing what to say. What I never fully understood was the depth of God’s desire for souls - how He longs for each person
that I would walk by and ignore in my classes. I realized that I, and so many others, were allowing a fear of being embarrassed to get in the way of poten al conversa ons and invita ons, which pains our Lord’s Sacred Heart.
“Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few’” (Ma hew 9:37). I tend to be a more introverted person, so I always chalked up mission work as something I would never do. But if I didn’t respond to this call God had placed on my heart, who would? Jesus told His disciples about the abundant harvest and instructed them to pray for more laborers - what if I was an answer to that prayer? All of a sudden it began to sound exci ng!
“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all na ons, bap zing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” (Ma hew 28:19). A er that and lots of prayer, all it took was a ‘yes’! And although it’s tough and can be in mida ng at mes, I’ve con nued to say ‘yes’ while trying to keep my eyes on the Lord.
I am praying for you all - please pray for me and for campus ministry here at St. Mary!
St. Mary Student Parish is a welcoming, inclusive, caring, and diverse Catholic community, uniting residents and students.
We are Christ-centered with the Eucharist as the source of holiness in our vibrant liturgical life.
Inspired by Ignatian spirituality, we live a faith that does justice, reaching out to the marginalized.
As an apostolic parish, we are committed to ongoing formation of Christian witness, discipleship, and leadership.
We are excited to announce that we will be star ng the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd faith forma on program this fall for our youngest parishioners, ages 3-4 yrs. The sessions will be held during our 11:15 am Family Faith Forma on Sundays. The Catechist of the Good Shepherd model is rooted in Scripture, Church Liturgy, Sacraments, and the teachings of Jesus Christ.
If you have experience with Catechesis of the Good Shepherd or would be interested in learning about the training process, please reach out to Andrea Rentz at andrea.rentz16@gmail.com
CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD – WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Dear Parents,
Prior to the Covid Pandemic, St Mary’s offered a Children’s Liturgy of the Word program at the 10:00am Mass for the youngest members of our community and their parents. It was coordinated and facilitated by parish volunteers. We are happy to once again offer this program, with the assistance of parish volunteers.
Briefly, Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a program in which children ages 2-6 leave the Sanctuary to par cipate in a child-friendly version of the Liturgy of the Word. They will listen to the First and Second Readings, the Gospel, the Creed, and Prayers of the Faithful in a child- friendly way. They will then return to the Sanctuary for the remainder of Mass. Parents are welcome to join their children and must accompany any children 2-3 years old.
WE NEED YOU TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN!
The Children’s Liturgy of the Word will be offered each week at the 10am Mass. We are hoping to have two classes, one for 2–3-year -olds and one for 4-6 year olds. Tin order to do this, we are in need of adult volunteers to co-lead the sessions! We are asking for volunteers to help co-facilitate approximately one session per month during the academic year (September to May). Session materials will be provided, we just ask that you review them ahead of me. Middle school and high school students are also welcome to volunteer! All volunteers must complete Virtus Training online prior to their first program facilita on, a background check, and a Code of Conduct form.
We are planning to have our first Children’s Liturgy of the Word Program on September 8! If you Are interested in volunteering or have ques ons, please contact Karen Foster kfoster@smspnewman.org
Your help is needed as we kick off the new school year with two "Welcome Back" BBQ's. We need help se ng up, prepping food, grilling, serving and cleaning up.
If you can help, please click on the link below or scan the QR Code or email Kristen at kgowman@smspnewman.org. You can also sign up on the sheets in the atrium. Thank you!
