STUDENT PARISH

CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

THOUGHTS ON THE CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION

I par cipated in the Eucharis c Procession this evening, the Solemnity of Corpus Chris , from St. Mary Student Parish through the Diag and Engine Arch, by the UM President's House and Angell Hall back down William to Liberty Square and through Kerrytown, past Zingermans and up Kingsley to St. Thomas for a final me of adora on.

I was touched by the people in the procession, including wheelchairs and folks on crutches and all singing and praising God as we stopped 6 mes along the way to pray with the monstrance on a table set up at each place, all kneeling, those that could, and praying together.

Since I am a UM Alumna, my mind jumped a few mes, along the procession, to some of my past experiences over the years in Ann Arbor. As we stepped over the center of the Diag I recalled the early 1970's when the Hare Krishna group a racted a en on by singing their mantras and An -Vietnam protests grew and student takeovers of buildings occured. Then I recalled the more recent student encampment on the Diag protes ng the Hamas/Israel conflict. This evening when we passed by the President's House, I was reminded of the numerous mes that UM President Robben Fleming (19681979) was in the hot seat during his tenure and the many protesters that camped out then on South University. The sidewalk in front of Angell Hall on State St was our next stop. I prayed for the redemp on of so many of my past memories at each stop and the blessings of all who wander on campus today.

And as we stopped at Liberty Square for a me of Adora on, I recalled so many mes when I had driven by there when protestors were voicing their opinions both religious and poli cal. Then we headed for Kerrytown, where several onlookers and families were enjoying ice cream cones, for our last period of adora on on the streets of Ann Arbor.

Yes, Ann Arbor streets and UM Campus walkways have been a microcosm of our dear country America. And this typical summer evening, we walked with Jesus along our path, our Way, our short pilgrimage, following the Holy of Holies. There were onlookers and a few honks; some taking pictures and I wonder what s rred in the hearts and minds of those that we passed. I hope they were touched by the Presence of the Holy Spirit as

we all processed by them.

It was a very quiet and peaceful night on the summer me streets of Ann Arbor. And we were gi ed with a pleasant Sunday evening for an ou ng of prayer with the Lord of Lords, the Lamb of God and some of his friends who said yes to the opportunity to spend me together with him .

Then arrived at St. Thomas, our final des na on, for our final me of adora on and benedic on. There were refreshments wai ng outside; fluids, salty snacks and oranges!!! So, we travelers were fed spiritually and physically along this way with Christ.

And at the end of our journey, we were able to meet others from surrounding Parishes and some out of towners, as well. I met parish members of St. Mary, Pinkney and many of the Knights of Columbus, who were the traffic guards along our route and who kept running ahead to the next crossing. They also held back tree branches numerous mes, so that the processional canopy could be moved forward without difficulty. Their a en veness at the crossings and safety jackets kept us out of harm's way. One of the Knights had his two young daughters, who were also very a en ve during the procession, with him.

And God bless all of the priests, deacons and acolytes who were wearing their processional garb during at least an hourplus walk during the summer warmth!

Another logis cal item that made our procession praise worthy was the sound system that included speakers being carried along and a microphone used by Fr. Kyle, to start us off in song from a valuable sheet of lyrics perfect for our adora on.

I, of course, did not see everyone who was there, but recognized many familiar faces from our Catholic Parishes in Ann Arbor.

Blessings to all who were able to par cipate! Perhaps we will gather next year!

SUNDAY PARKING– OPERATIONAL CHANGE

Beginning June 2024, City public parking facili es will make an opera onal change to lower structure and lot gate arms on Sundays. Parking will s ll be free on Sundays, but the gates will be down, and parking patrons will need to pull a cket to enter the facility. When exi ng, parking patrons will simply insert their parking cket into the in-lane exit equipment and the gate will go up.

Parkers who lose their cket can use the same procedure as during the week, push the call bu on on the in-lane equipment and speak with PCI staff for assistance. Lost cket charges will be waived for the first 4 months. However, beginning in October 2024 lost ckets will be charged for 24 hours of parking, as is standard during the week.

This change is being made to align the system with best prac ces in parking. An opera on where gates stay down provides internal and revenue controls, as well as opera onal efficiencies related to space counts and permit parkers. This will also help to track of Sunday u liza on.
