Botswana is a land of striking contrasts, where untamed wilderness meets breathtaking landscapes, and diverse wildlife roams free. This 14-day adventure takes you deep into the heart of Southern Africa, from the rhino-rich sanctuaries of the Kalahari to the lush waterways of the Okavango Delta, the predator-filled plains of Moremi, and the vast saltpans of Makgadikgadi.
The journey begins with an early departure from Johannesburg at 06:30 AM, heading north into Botswana towards the Khama Rhino Sanctuary. This community-based wildlife project was established to protect the endangered rhino population while restoring the area’s natural ecosystem. Located on the Kalahari sandveld, the sanctuary is home to several waterholes that attract white rhino, zebra, and wildebeest.
Traveling through the vast Kalahari landscape, the next destination is Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta. Founded in 1915, Maun was once a frontier town supporting local cattle ranchers and safari operations. The town’s name originates from the San word ‘maung,’ meaning ‘the place of short reeds.’
A scenic drive leads deeper into the Okavango Delta, reaching the launch station where traditional mokoros (dug-out canoes) await. Gliding through reed-lined waterways, the camp is reached in the heart of the delta, an ecosystem rich in red lechwe, buffalo, elephants, and diverse birdlife. The days are spent exploring the area, with opportunities to observe wildlife up close while being gently poled through the tranquil waters.
The adventure continues into Moremi Game Reserve with an open 4WD safari vehicle, providing excellent game-viewing opportunities. Moremi’s diverse habitats support elephants, hippos, buffalo, lions, and a variety of other wildlife. Over four days, game drives take place across Moremi and private concession reserves. The tour returns to Maun by midday on day 8, allowing time for an optional restaurant meal (own expense).
The day starts with an optional scenic flight over the Okavango Delta (own expense) before departing for Nata. The shimmering saltpans of Makgadikgadi appear as an endless white landscape. With seasonal rains, thousands of zebras and wildebeest migrate to the nutrientrich grasslands, while flocks of flamingos gather to feed on algae-rich waters.
The journey continues to Chobe River, a key water source attracting some of Africa’s largest elephant herds. Activities include an early morning 4WD game drive in Chobe National Park, followed by an afternoon “sundowner” boat cruise, where elephants can be seen returning to the river to drink.
A visit to the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls, locally known as “Mosi oa Tunya” or “The Smoke That Thunders,” is the highlight of these two days. The lush rainforest surrounding the falls is home to diverse birdlife.
