As I prepared to launch Smooth Jazz News 19 years ago, I dreamed about quitting my day job as a top-producing mortgage banker. I envisioned a life traveling around the country writing about jazz festivals and interviewing the stars of smooth jazz and up-and-coming acts. Then, sharing my stories with fellow jazz enthusiasts everywhere through the first-ever print publication devoted to a then-popular radio format and flourishing musical lifestyle. I’ll admit that I’ve had many sublime jazz vacation experiences over these nearly two decades. Among them were The Bermuda Music Festival; The JazzTrax Train to its “Winter into Spring Music Festival” at the Sunriver Resort in Oregon; The Great Waikoloa Food, Wine and Music Festival on the Big Island of Hawaii—all of which no longer exist––and, thankfully, one that still does, Dave Koz & Friends at Sea full-ship charters. I was on the 2011 Alaska cruise, but Koz has expanded his annual sailings around the globe. excursions aside, it may surprise you to know that the time I spend attending concerts and festivals is just a sliver of Hilton Waikoloa Village, venue for the 2004 Dolphin Days and Great Waikoloa Food, Wine and Music Festival on Hawaii’s Big Island

San Diegans are lucky that two of the three most popular Christmas tours will be making a stop at the Balboa Theatre again this year: Dave Koz and Friends on Dec. 17, and A Peter White Christmas on Dec. 21. However, Southern Californians will have to trek up north to catch the newest tour on the holiday circuit, Norman Brown’s Joyous Christmas, in Oakland, California.

THE WINTER HOLIDAYS are an especially wonderful time for smooth jazz fans. That’s when the stars of smooth jazz transition from outdoor festival stages to indoor venues to capture the coziness of the season in a way that sends most of us over the top bursting with so much holiday spirit that we want to wear silly Christmas sweaters all month long.

The first single, “Back & Forth,” from Jazz in Pink’s highly anticipated upcoming CD, 2nd Collection, has been released. This all-female ensemble, featuring Gail Jhonson, Robin Bramlett, Tomoka, Dee Simone and D’Love, celebrates the band’s 10th anniversary with a smooth, funky and jazzy song that all music lovers will enjoy.

• Against the Odds (M.A.N.D.A.T.E. Records, Inc.)

Christmas Everyday is Nils’ first holiday album, and features both original and traditional songs of the season arranged in a very cool jazzy style that sets it apart from the ordinary. Nils collaborated with many top artists, singers and musicians to bring us an album that will become a classic holiday collection for many years to come.

• TIME TO GROOVE (Solid Groove Recordings)

It was an extremely labor-intensive, several-month process to make this happen. We contacted each musician via email or phone, requested information about his or her listings, followed up, factchecked, etc. Some emails bounced, so drummer Tony Moore helped us gather current contact information. We also announced it on our Facebook page, ran a full-page ad in the October-November edition notifying all sidemen and women about this section, stacked copies of that issue in the dressing rooms at the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival, told all of the musicians who passed by our booth in the Catalina Casino, about this opportunity and sent several follow-up emails advising of the final deadline. People who responded in time have listings included in this issue, which offers a view of the path each of them has traveled to reach this level in their career. Those who didn’t respond are listed by name under their respective instrumentAlthoughcategory.manyof these musicians are satisfied with their role on the side, others have felt the need to expand their creativity by stepping out into solo careers. This year, I am highlighting three sidemen/woman who have branched out with their own projects. I chose one from each band on the current Christmas tour circuit—Dave Koz and Friends Christmas, A Peter White Christmas, and Norman Brown’s Joyous Christmas—and who also recently recorded a new CD of their own. I hope you enjoy these profiles of the people who offer us so much soulful enrichment and remind us how great it feels to immerse ourselves in the magic of a live performance. As we celebrate the holidays, I would like to express my gratitude for and recognize the band members and emerging artists who keep us entertained year-round.

The curtains rise. Lights shine on the musicians who are already positioned on set as the drums, guitar, bass and keyboards come alive with an exciting intro to a popular song. Suddenly, their boss, the star of the show, bursts onto the stage, and the musical theatrics begin! For 90 minutes, they keep us entertained and temporarily eclipse any personal problems we’re facing, national disasters, or the divisiveness and crises that have gripped our country. They serve us one hit after another throughout a musical journey, engagingly choreographed from kickoff to crescendo, seemingly spontaneously. But, it isn’t spontaneous at all. The talented men and women who accompany the name on the marquee have spent years educating themselves and practicing their craft, and countless hours rehearsing, studying charts and set lists, as well as nailing the nuances of each particular show. They frequently live out of suitcases. Relay-racing to airports, piling into vans (or, if they’re lucky, a tour bus), speeding off to the next hotel, rushing to sound check, foraging for food at ridiculous hours, and, at times, tracking lost luggage and equipment while dealing with canceled flights or missed connections–they do it all just to make it to the next gig and entertain us. Yet, they look so cool onstage. Their reward is doing what they love and what they were born to do. In special moments, we also get glimpses into their precise skills and personalities when the star performer turns a solo spotlight on each band member to allow their individual talents to shine on center stage. That’s when we get to applaud theirTheseefforts.talented musicians, some solo artists in their own right, deserve an extended encore. That’s why, after nearly 10 years, I am publishing this tribute to the sidemen and women of smooth jazz.

Phillips, who has been the go-to bassist for a number of bands and musicians for more than four decades, said the band tried to figure out how to reintroduce themselves with new music, and they finally realized that the maxim “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” applied. “At first, we thought we’d try to capture the new sound and put something on top of it, but we decided to make music like we used to play it. I think it works, and people will want to hear it.”

Phillips continues to play with White, including on this year’s A Peter White Christmas tour, but he has built a career by being an oncall bassist for many years––a role he says he enjoys because he recognizes the demands of each job and knows how to help artists realize their musical visions. “They call me for a reason—they know what I can bring, and they also want my input. I always do my homework. Probably the most important thing is to be prepared,” he said. “I’ve worked with so many artists in different genres. I’ve played with Gerald Albright, Rick Braun, The BarKays, Club Nouveau, Con Funk Shun and so many others. I’m glad I can jump around, but I know I’m always going to play music the way they want to hear it. Of course, they want my creativity, but they have their sound, and I’m there to make it work.”

By Ken Capobianco

“I have five 120-gig iPods, two terabytes of songs and a huge library of albums. I love listening to music— there’s so much great music out there and great bass players, too. I love to stay on top of things.”

The band updates the sound that brought them the hit “Glide” from their 1979 album Future Now and helped them make a dent on the era’s jazz-funk scene. It’s the kind of knee-deep, in-the-groove, feel-good music you hardly hear anymore, unless it’s being sampled by hip-hop bands.

“We got some of the main members of the band together, and we thought we’d just do a song—maybe a single. But one became two and then three, and that became eight,” said the amiable Phillips recently via phone. “We have no support. We’re putting it out on our own, but the response from the people who have heard it has been so great so far, so who knows what’s going to happen.”

As the bass player for Peter White, Nate Phillips helps lay down the grooves for the smooth jazz guitarist’s fluidly melodic songs. But these days, the agile bassist, who has worked with numerous superstar musicians over the years, is also busy resurrecting his funk band, Pleasure, which had success in the late 1970s and earlyPhillips’80s. and Pleasure are releasing Now Is the Time record in 37 years, and gearing up for playing shows behind the album. Now Is the Time is a set of throwback funk so greasy it could keep a 12-wheeler running smoothly for miles. The joyous, bottom-heavy grooves evoke a different time in pop music when the likes of Parliament Funkadelic, The Dazz Band, Graham Central Station and Cameo raised the roofs. Featuring superb artistry led by Phillips’ elastic bass, the songs sound vintage, while also being thoroughly contemporary.

It’s certainly a treat for funk and R&B fans in an era when real-deal funk is hard to find. While the rousing sound might seem like a departure for those who recognize Phillips for his work with White, best known for his sleek melodicism, Phillips thinks there’s a simple connection between styles: deep musicality and expert musicianship. it’s a pleasure to work with him. It’s been a good ride working together,” said Phillips. “Peter, he’s the scholar of musicology, and his music crosses categories. He writes great songs––the melody is always first––and we can work it up, especially onstage. As a musician, that’s what you look for.”

BASS

Phillips said that the life of a working musician who has been on the road for years doesn’t get easier as he gets older, but he appreciates that he doesn’t have to endure the rigors of touring like a struggling musician anymore. “Oh, let me tell you, I’m glad to be done with the touring in the van and doubling up on rooms,” he said. “On the Christmas tour with Peter, we figure out NATE PHILLIPS

One of the keys for Phillips as an in-demand musician is staying current. I love listening to music––there’s so much great music out there and great bass players, too. I love to stay on top of things.”

“In the beginning, it was tough. I still didn’t understand that there was a sound and mechanics to smooth jazz—there’s a bit of a formula—so it took a minute or so.” continued on page 20

He paused for a moment, then said that the kind of chemistry he finds working with Abair doesn’t happen frequently when two expert players get together. “You have to understand, you can play with the greatest musicians, but that spark might not be there. I mean you can end up with nothing, and it falls flat, but we had that chemistry––we didn’t have to work at it. At first, it was more Mindi Abair, and then we started toward Mindi Abair & The Boneshakers, and it’s working out.”

“My work with Dave and now with Mindi are two separate things and really different sounds, but I’ve been playing with so many musicians over the years. You learn to adapt, so I enjoy it. When you get down to it, you’re playing music, and you just have to be yourself,” said Jacobs, who is music director for the 2018 Dave Koz and Friends Christmas tour with special guests Abair, Jonathan Butler, Keiko Matsui and introducing Sheléa.

The Boneshakers’ rattle and roll is on a different music spectrum than Jacobs’ work with Koz, which marks a left turn in the guitarist’s career. Jacobs explained that after Was (Not Was) wound down, he played with various smooth jazz artists including Warren Hill, Euge Groove, Braun and the late Wayman Tisdale before connecting with Koz.

And the hard-charging guitarist has plenty to discuss these days as he continues his work as Koz’s music director while playing with saxophonist Mindi Abair in the white-hot rockblues band he co-founded, Mindi Abair & The Boneshakers.

DECEMBER 2018 | JANUARY 2019 | 19

A conversation with veteran rock and blues guitarist Randy Jacobs is like going on an enjoyably digressive journey into the history of contemporary popular music and the art of guitar playing. The musician jazz fans recognize for his high-energy guitar fireworks onstage with the likes of Dave Koz, Rick Braun and other smooth jazz stars has a rich history in rock and blues music and an encyclopedia of anecdotes about his work with some of popular music’s brightest lights. The spirited, funny, and insightful Jacobs rapidly bounces from one idea to the next as he riffs on the enduring influence of Jimi Hendrix, the difference between playing the blues and rock, his segue into smooth jazz, and his long tenure with the influential rock-funk band Was (Not Was), all while talking about his career as a professional musician and his current projects.

Jacobs and Abair have teamed up, with Abair taking over the lead of Jacobs’ longtime gritty, rabble-rousing rock band whose sound Jacobs dubbed as “alternative classic rock.” They just released a Christmas album, All I Got for Christmas Is the Blues , which comes on the heels of their well-received studio debut from last year, The EastWest Sessions . The prolific group will go into the studio in early 2019 to record a newJacobsalbum.explained the genesis of the project. “We came together over the last few years. I was playing with my band The Boneshakers, and Mindi sat in with us because I had been sitting in with her band––we were cross-pollinating between bands, using different musicians from each. Her manager at the time, Bud Harner, suggested we play together—he called me up, and there was definitely that energy when we played.”

He added that there was a period of adjustment for him when he started with the multi-GRAMMY nominated star jazz saxophonist nearly a decade ago. “In the beginning, it was tough. I still didn’t understand that there was a sound and mechanics to smooth jazz—there’s a bit of a formula—so it took a minute or so.

“After two years, I realized I have to be me. Because of that, it became better for me and Dave. I guess I gave it more fire and a different dimension for good or bad. I think, though, it works for Dave because like a lot of these guys like Brian Culbertson, they make quiet records and then go out onstage and the music comes alive. It becomes something else because you have to excite people.”

While not a headliner or a household name, Jacobs is unquestionably one of the more successful working guitarists in the industry. “It’s better to be successful than be famous,” he said. “Being famous, you have limitations. But for me, I’ve been so blessed. I played with Was (Not Was), and I remember Roland [Orzabal] from Tears for Fears came down and heard me. He said, ‘OK, great, you gotta play for us.’ And that’s the way it’s been throughout my career. I’ve played with so many people––it has been terrific. I couldn’t ask for more. I’ve been able to be myself and do some special things.”

Jacobs said that his time with Koz continues to be a learning experience and helps broaden his musical boundaries. “Dave’s music is so varied. He plays big band, and I never played that, so I had to ask questions and figure it out. When I play with Dave, it’s different––it’s certainly not how I play with Mindi; I can push the parameters more there. I really can’t do that with Dave. That’s not my place. Imagine [metal guitar virtuoso] Yngwie Malmsteen playing ‘Together Again.’ It just wouldn’t work,” he said, amused. Part of being a musical sideman and a team player is about adapting, though, and Jacobs said he’s used to it. “You learn things quickly in this business. When I was young, I played with Brook Benton, and he’d be like, ‘OK, give me a drink, it’s time for Randy to play,’ because he knew there’d be feedback, and I’d be playing while on my back,” he said with a big laugh. “I wanted to make it exciting, but you realize that’s not what it’s about sometimes.”

Jacobs, 61, father of 23-year-old son Daniel, recently moved from Los Angeles to Gilroy, California, where he bought a home with his fiancée, Blanca Garza (six-time Emmy-winning journalist and newscaster for NBC/Telemundo 48 in San Jose, California). The couple plan to wed in January 2019. For more information on Jacobs, visit www.randyjacobs.com.

It’s this kind of dedication to her craft and tireless work ethic that have made Jhonson an indispensable figure on the popular jazz scene for the past few decades.

By Ken Capobianco Gail Jhonson has one of the more demanding jobs in smooth jazz. The talented, versatile musician has been the longtime keyboardist and music director for guitarist Norman Brown. While that’s more than enough responsibility for any musician, her work with Brown is just one of the many hats Jhonson wears these days. She is also a record producer, a label owner, a thriving solo artist who is about to release her sixth album, and a founding member of the all-women jazz collective Jazz in Pink, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year and is set to release a new album in 2019.

“It sure does take up a lot of time, but I enjoy it,” she said. “My job for Norman is to take his music and present it in the best possible light. That means to support his ideas and surround the music with really great arrangements that really let the music shine, so he can concentrate on focusing on the audience and doing his thing.

In addition to her roster of musical activities, Jhonson, who has also taught music for many years, has returned to her alma mater, Boston’s prestigious Berklee School of Music, to work on an online degree in music business.

“I love making music and working with other musicians, and I want to pass my knowledge on to others, so teaching is very important to me.” continued on page 22

“I’m always trying to grow as a musician and a person,” said Jhonson via phone recently. “I am balancing a lot of things, but it’s always worth it, even if it can be exhausting. I love making music and working with other musicians, and I want to pass my knowledge on to others, so teaching is very important to me.”This year, Jhonson has tried to fit in some writing and recording time for her upcoming album between her time on the road with Brown, which she admitted is time-consuming, especially for a musician as exacting as Brown.

“Over 50 women musicians have shared the stage with us over the years, and we’ve been very fortunate to brand Jazz in Pink and keep women at the forefront of jazz,” she said. “There’s a lot of great women doing terrific things in jazz, and it’s important to get that out there. We want to make sure radio knows and retail knows so we have more opportunities, and everyone realizes we are all doing really good music. Every one of these great artists has various solo projects going, and when we get together, we showcase that.”

“I want to grow my label, and the technology is moving by leaps and bounds every day. I need to stay current with the music business and what’s going on around us. 22 | SMOOTH JAZZ NEWS Before she heads out with Brown on his Christmas tour, Jhonson is going to be hard at work completing Stepping into the Keys. Advance music of songs she’s finished demonstrate a great artistic leap forward for the keyboardist. The music is both accessible and contemplative and reflects her growth after a tumultuous period in her personal life, the death of her son. “The music will reflect the development—my son has been gone six years now—I’m evolving, and the music is also,” she said. “When you stop growing, you don’t have anything to say. I wanted to get a little more commercial with these songs, but I’m sure I’ll also put some more standard Gail Jhonson stuff on there. Some of it is heavier than before. I’ve got a bunch of songs from songwriters I’m going to choose from, and I have some songs I’m working on, but I’m going to have time now, and I’m excited about how it’s going to turn out.” Jazz in Pink’s 10th anniversary was a milestone of which the Philadelphia native is very proud because the group has helped place talented women musicians front and center in the very male-dominated jazz world.

Jhonson, who is currently producing bassist Tony Saunders’ new album, also emphasized the significance of having more women follow her lead as a music educator, another aspect of the music business that is predominantly male. “It’s very important for me to have women involved in the teaching aspect, so people can see that, yeah, women can teach music, and they have an understanding of the concepts of jazzlike improvisation and polychords or polyrhythmic stuff. That’s crucial. Believe it or not, but that’s not a given still.” By going back to school for music business, Jhonson clearly recognizes the necessity of mastering all aspects of the music industry so she can remain in control of her destiny in the often fickle and unpredictable music world.

Aquarius Jan. 20 - Feb. 18

Libra Sept. 23 - Oct. 22 Don’t let money cause arguments now. It can definitely be a hot topic, and it’s far more important for you to maintain certain relationships than it is to quibble over dollars and cents. Try to keep calm, listen to all sides and make an informed decision.

You’ve been hearing a lot of talk lately about how great you’ve been doing on the job. Don’t let this go to your head. Find a trusted third party, and try to get a realistic view of things before you are surprised with a negative outcome.

“Tony Bennett Onstage and in the Studio”

Cancer June 22 - July 22 Issues in your personal life will soon be bubbling to a head. Try to respond with diplomacy because you want to come out on top in the confrontation. Remember, negotiating will work better than exploding in anger. Try to keep yourself in check.

Capricorn Dec. 22 - Jan. 19

You might have been feeling like you’ve lost the reins on certain projects. Don’t worry about your position being diminished; there are changes coming that will put you back in control. Trust yourself on this and move forward.

The famed singer of “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” is obviously revered and loved by many fellow musicians, which is reflected in the book’s loving forward written by Michael Bublé. Throughout the book are several accolades about Bennett written by non-musicians, including President Bill Clinton and Martin Scorsese.

Sagittarius Nov. 22 - Dec. 21

Bennett also made two albums with jazz pianist Bill Evans, one of his personal highlights. Columbia Records was his label for many years, along with a stint at Verve, then back to Columbia. The partnership has been more than fruitful.

This coffee-table book is full of photos and memoranda reflecting Tony Bennett’s amazing career. Examples of his paintings and sketches are included, as well as an array of album covers, many of which are artwork he created. The singer shares copies of private notes he’s received, including one from Frank Sinatra, who told Bennett, “There’s no such thing as a cold audience, only a cold performer.” Bennett’s positivity and love of sharing his artistry with others have been his guiding purpose. The incredible richness of his lifetime and experience is truly mind-boggling.

Virgo Aug. 23 - Sept. 22 It’s time to use your listening skills. Be careful how you approach others to have this heart-to-heart. Listen closely, and try not to be judgmental. You need to be able to understand the other side of the conversation.

Finances have been on your mind lately, but you really need to buckle down now and see your budget in an honest way. There may be cuts you should address, but by being organized you should be able to create a workable routine.

Leo July 23 - Aug. 22 Telling a Leo that he’s doing things the wrong way is never a good situation. Keep your cool, and explain to others involved why your way is the best way. Be ready to back that up with facts and some good examples.

You manage your affairs pretty reliably, and stick to your own guns. Don’t let that stop you from seriously considering an offer that might improve your circumstances. Let yourself be open to changes, and they might just work for you.

Bennett is the winner of 18 GRAMMY Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award, and has recorded more than 70 albums. He has worked with both of his sons on many of them. He has sung the American Songbook and interpreted the music of great composers such as Harold Arlen, the Gershwins and Duke Ellington. His love and dedication to America’s music translates to those he entertains in his travels: “I play in China. I play in Norway, Sweden, Spain, Germany and Italy, in North and South America, and everywhere I perform these citizens cheer our American standards.”

DECEMBER 2018 | JANUARY 2019

Pisces Feb. 19 - March 20

Gemini May 21 - June 21

Bennett refers to himself as a jazz singer. His impressive work with scores of important jazz artists over the years reflects his love of American music. He recorded with saxophonist Stan Getz several times. His relationship with his longtime pianist Ralph Sharon is part of music legend. Bennett states, “Ralph not only understood what I required musically, but he was such a loyal and supportive friend. I’ll always be so grateful he came into my life.”

You are more than willing to help out family and friends, but be careful to avoid creating bad habits. If others depend upon you too much, there could be some unfortunate fallout when you occasionally have to pass.

Aries March 21 - April 19

CASHMIRA’SSTARGUIDE

You like to be perceived as strong and in charge. Your friends know you better than that. There is a soft side that needs to come out once in awhile. It doesn’t mean you can’t still manage a difficult project when you let that softer side show.

Taurus April 20 - May 20 You are now being asked to take on some additional duties, and a co-worker feeling defensive may confront you about that. Stay calm and be respectful. The relationship you create will only benefit you both in the end.

Scorpio Oct. 23 - Nov. 21 It looks like you will be getting a new roommate soon. Make sure you both know the guidelines at the beginning, so there will be no harmful misunderstandings. You can have a successful household if everyone knows what is expected of them.

“I love entertaining people: I strive to make them feel good, and they make me feel wonderful. To explain it simply, I like what I do. And my ambition is to get better as I get older. That’s really what I’m all about.”

Bennett worked with his son Danny to appeal to other generations. Under Danny’s management, Bennett sang for the younger generation. His new outreach began by becoming a part of MTV and beginning a series of duets done with many other artists such as Diana Krall, k.d. lang and Lady Gaga. The two duet albums were so successful, he eventually made separate albums with both Gaga and lang. Over his lifetime, Bennett has maintained an impressive workload of recording and touring, but his artwork is also a major part of his life.
