Club News We’re entering the busiest time of the shooting year and of course, the most fun. As you can see, I got an update on the Palm Beach Count Gun Club from Lynne Hawk. See page 12 and 13. At least the skeet houses are almost done and the bunker traps are poured. Maybe this summer?!

The Bud Wolfe was well attended by 62 shooters. The threat of rain probably put off some shooters. Lucio Gomez won the event with a 95 matched by Runner-Up Charlie Alvarez.

Luis Herrera lead Masters with a lone 94.

Notable scores among the category shooters were Michael Pilch’s 90 for Junior and Rodrigo Mehich’s 92 for Veteran.

The April shoot has been renamed the Gerry Stumm Memorial shoot. A fitting tribute to this wonderful shooter and leader of the Sporting Clays for Markham for far too short a time.

The Trapshoot was also affected by bad weather. Is this really the Dry Season? Six shooters

decided to hold a minimarathon in Doubles, shooting 1,300 targets.

Dax Demena and Alex Riera both turned in 92’s in separate events and Alex had a 91 in another.

Remember, the Trapshoot is held on January 12th this month not on the fourth Sunday of the month. This is done to prevent conflicts with the HOF shoot and the money shoots at Silver Dollar.

The December Skeet shoot drew 10 shooters who fired at 1,700 targets. Ed Ford won the 12 gauge and the HOA events. Michael Gelles, Geoffrey Peters and Rick Kassel won the 20, 28. and .410 Respectively. Also, a reminder, I am running the Skeet shoots at South Florida. The January shoot is Saturday the 25th. Also, the February Skeet shoot at Markham is on the 15th not the 1st.

I just got word Walmart is no longer carrying ammunition in its Florida stores. Not good news.

Magazine Review Shotgun Sports – January 2020 Several years ago, Wilson McMillan took Andrew and I bluegill fishing on Lake Okeechobee. Best day of fishing in my life! We caught 150 huge bluegills. Each one seemed to be bigger than the last. While we were fishing, he told us stories about his family and commercial catfishing on Lake O. His father would set trotlines and at the end of the night their catch

throw them out with the other by-catch.

I think we can all relate to that story. Michael J. Keyes, M.D. calls this Task Completion Bias (TCB). TCB is what happens when we make a to-do list and start by completing the easiest tasks and put off the more difficult ones for later. Those tasks sometimes never get done. We can fall into the TCB trap when we train. Instead of working on difficult presentations or fundamentals, we go out and shoot a round with our friends and call it a day.

The boring stuff can also be lumped in with the hard tasks. Working on fundamentals is an example of the boring stuff. The thing is, if your fundamentals aren’t perfect, you can’t expect to make long term progress. Training to improve your fundamentals isn’t very exciting and can be pretty boring. To get better you need to create a strong foundation. This means putting in time doing mundane training.

The same is true in any sport. TCB, stay on task and do the hard and boring stuff if you want to get better. Of course, get some coaching to make sure the training you’re doing is actually going to help you improve.

After all these years of articles, Michael is just now starting to learn how to shoot trap. I honestly don’t know if he shot skeet or sporting up to this point or if he shot any of the shotgunning games. Doesn’t matter, I guess.

His mental game knowledge is universal to all sports. Anyway, to train for trapshooting and avoid the TCB trap means he needs a plan.

First, he’s going to set aside time to work on his fundamentals such as training to look at the target not the gun. Second, he’s going to get coaching help. Third, he’s going to document everything he does. This could turn into an interesting set of articles in 2020 as he documents his progress. I look forward to a mental 6 game guru practicing what he’s been preaching!

It takes some pretty bad advice to get me upset, but Mark H. Taylor’s article this month on trap Doubles really pushed the right buttons. Let’s start with two points he got right: efficiency of movement and visual transition to the second target. Yes, you need to develop an efficient move to the first and second targets and you need to learn how to visually transition to the second bird. How he explains their application however is horribly wrong!

His suggestion that a Doubles shooter needs to windup their stance to accommodate swinging to the second target is way off. No one does this. Your stance shouldn’t be all that different from your Singles stance.

Maybe a slight shift of your feet otherwise no body twisting.

His suggestions for Post 3 targets are also wrong. Always take the right bird first no matter whether you are right or left-handed.

Trust me, you never want to come back to the right bird as your second target. Holding your gun “in the exact flight path of the first target” is also misguided. The first target quarters slightly on every Post. Hold to the outside of the flight path and use an intercept move to break the first target.

On Post 3 Leo Harrison III used to use sustained-lead to break the first bird as it was rising. Never wait for a first target to reach its apex!!! And always, always make a move to the first target, never shoot it with a dead gun. Move to the first target.

Keep the move to a minimum but move to it!

His whole explanation of moving to the second target with a looping swing is fundamentally incorrect. If you are looking ahead of your barrels why would you need to loop your swing.

Under his theory it’s done to get a better view of the second bird. If you swing correctly off the first target you will go where your eyes are looking and they should be looking at the second target. If you are required to loop your swing to see the second target, you’re shooting the first bird much too late. Learn how to shoot the first more efficiently.

Magazine Review SHOOTING SPORTSMAN – January/ February 2020 Chris Batha’s explanations are always concise, complete, and correct. This article is no different. Chris dives into solving those mystery misses when shooting live birds.

Start by perfecting your fundamentals then learn the “fault-cause-correction” of your misses. To do this Chris wants us to learn how to analyze our shooting so we can become our own coach.

He then presents seven rules for learning how to coach yourself.

I don’t see how this trains you to become a self-coach, but here they are.

First, lock your eyes on the target to the exclusion of everything else and keep them there throughout the shot. Next, observe your target’s speed, angle, and distance. Do this correctly and you can visualize in your head where the target is headed. Knowing this you can then move to the theoretical point where you need to place the barrels to hit your bird. This isn’t as time consuming as you would think. See the target’s speed, angle, and distance and you can quickly picture where the barrel needs to be to hit your bird.

On crossing targets keep your head on the stock and as you mount, step into the target’s line-of-flight. On high incoming birds keep your eyes locked on the bird’s beak and keep the barrels on or in front of it as you swing. On flushing birds stay in front and over them. Birds flushing straight-away, swing from below and don’t fire until you pass through the bird.

Finally, why are so many birds missed with the first shot and brought down with the second? It’s lack of hard visual lock

on the first shot and lack of trust in the shot. First shots are measured, second shots are pure. See the target, shoot the target. Don’t measure. Get visual lock, then move, mount, and shoot. No measuring.

Tom Roster steps up on the pressure versus recoil question. Simple answer, pressure has nothing to do with recoil. Recoil is a factor of load, gun weight, and gun fit.

Pressure is only important for proofed barrels up to a set pressure load. It has no effect on recoil.

————————————————When working with intermediate to advanced students I constantly admonish them to break the target harder. Center it, punish it, crush it! This is a way of pushing the student to totally focus on the execution of the shot. The object isn’t to break the target because breaking it will improve your score. The object is to break the target perfectly, one target after another. If your focus is on breaking your targets perfectly, then score fades into the background and the real goal is to become a better shooter, one target at a time. Higher scores naturally follow.

In his article this month Todd Bender relates how he once found himself focusing on score rather than execution and how he got himself back on track before he ruined an otherwise great weekend of shooting. Shooting not to miss rather than shooting for the pure joy of crushing targets will get you into trouble. Todd is right in telling us to concentrate on execution and process above all

else. As John Shima says, “watch the target break”, don’t try to break the target.

Focusing on execution and process eliminates most of the anxiety and stress of a competition. Create a routine and execute it before every shot. It’s about the shot, not just concentration. Concentrating on concentrating isn’t the solution. It’s all about making the perfect shot and setting up the multiple variables required to accomplish that. Develop a solid pre-shot routine and execute it for each shot. Sounds simple.

Execute it and your shooting is sure to improve.

Magazine Review CLAYTARGET – NATION – December 2019 “Move on the flash” is one of the mantras in skeet. I struggled with this idea for years as I learned this sport. Look and hold point suggestions never matched up with this mantra in my mind. It wasn’t until recently that I finally put everything together from John Shima’s, Todd Bender’s, and Paul Giambrone’s articles and started feeling I could do what they’ve been saying all along.

John’s suggestions for hold and look points in this month’s article do not jibe with what I use but using his ideas as a starting point is the real strength of what he preaches. I found out I

can look much further off the gun than most people and I was more comfortable doing that than only looking two or three feet off my barrels. It took way too long to figure that out! After experimenting with hold and look points over the last seven years I figured out I was paying too much heed to the pundits and should done a more active job experimenting with my look and hold point combinations. I think John, Todd, and Paul should be more open about this concept. There is a wide range of abilities and comfort levels out there. Their suggestions were much too narrow to help me. Don’t be afraid to experiment. You might be surprised at what you find.

While I found this to be a minor sticking point over the years, the rest of what John suggests is correct. In fact, I didn’t listen close enough and I should have.

Recently, while practicing outgoing targets, I concentrated on moving from the ankles up as he has been harping about for years. This is a critical point. By swinging from the ankles up, your swing in much more efficient and your reaction to the target is strikingly more effective.

Suddenly I found I was always ahead of the target. My rhythm was totally blown so, I had to adjust all my hold points because I was now too far in front of the target. Only took seven years of reading articles and books to get me to apply the obvious. Truly sad on my part! Thank you, John.

Youth Program

Army Marksmanship Unit member Alex Rennert stopped by last Monday to donate some ammo and to say hello. Alex, an Eagle Scout, won the National Championship this year and got the Bronze medal in the Fall Olympic Qualifying event. He has already shot a qualifying score for the Olympics so now all he has to do is place in the Spring Olympic Qualifying event. Alex was one of our Youth program’s first members. It was good to see him and we wish him well as he tries to do the ultimate, make the Olympics.
