Club News As you can see by the cover Reanna Frauens has done it again! She took Lady Champion in the FITASC and K-KUP at the NSCA Nationals in San Antonio. Local legend Ashley Little also did well, winning Lady Champion in the 20 and 28 gauge events and the 20 gauge FITASC Lady Champion. Ashley also finished Runner-Up to Reanna in the FITASC and was 4th in the K-Kup. Both ladies finished in the top 15 of the Main Event. These are just the highlights of their week. Congratulations to both our local legends! Not to be outdone Andrew Loitz won the Florida State Trap Doubles Championship this month! Some of our other locals also picked up trophies. I’ll get back to you when the results are posted. Sadly I have to report the passing of long time club officer and fellow shooter Eric Toline. Eric served the club for many years and will be missed. Also Gus Pearthree passed recently. Gus was a local trapshooter and sporting clays enthusiast. I will be meeting with the manager of Trail Glades on Sunday, November 1st to access our abilities to hold registered Trapshooting in
Miami again. We have some great club support from the Miami shooters and I expect to have dates possibly by December! If you are interested in helping with the shoots, please contact me. The Richard Merritt Memorial Shoot will be held Sunday, November 1st. The usual lunch will not be held. Hopefully, we will be able to provide something for the Bud Wolfe Classic. Don’t forget: Florida State Skeet Shoot is November 13-15th at Imperial Polk County. Florida State Sporting Clays is December 1st-6th at Bradford’s Sportsmans Farm. I guess I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my own induction into the Florida Trapshooting Hall of Fame. I like to think of myself as a shotgunner, supporting Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays, and Wingshooting however I can. It is an honor and quite humbling. Joe Loitz jloit@bellsouth.net 954-857-5278 4

With over 30 years of experience Steve Norris has established his reputation as one of the premier shotgun instructors in South Florida. Whether he is guiding a beginning shooter through their first shots or perfecting an advanced shooter’s game, Steve is the go to coach at Markham Park. He has worked with over 1,000 Youth shooters in
Markham’s Youth Program and has helped guide six of them to national championships. Steve is available for lessons in Trap, Skeet, and Sporting Clays. Gil and Vicki Ash’s article this month is on the differences between parallel or dropped combs (sporting or hunting stocks). The takeaway from the article is the advantages and disadvantages between the two stocks. Parallel combs are popular in Trap and Skeet. No
I agree when they talk about shooting low or high targets. A dropped comb has advantages in mounting and feel that a parallel comb doesn’t have. The dropped comb is easier to mount for these targets. Personally, I prefer a slight drop to my comb. An-

How do you stay focused for the hour to an hour and a half it takes to shoot 100 Trap or Skeet targets? How do you stay focused for the two to three hours it takes to shoot 100 Sporting Clays targets? Many years ago, Hall of Fame shooter Dan Bonillas stated, “you only have to stay focused for the 3 or 4 seconds it takes to shoot each target.” That means you only need to be present for about 7 minutes of the event. Not exactly true, but I think you get the point. You don’t have to be concentrating the whole time you’re out shooting an event.
relaxes until the next time he steps into the box. If he felt off, he reviews his mental setup, visual look point concentration, his physical move to the target. Was anything off ? If it was, he’ll remind himself to adjust on the next station. This review only takes a few moments, perhaps 10 to 15 seconds. Now he has 2 or 3 minutes till he
Paul Giambrone III thinks we only need to be fully present for about 15 minutes of the hour and a half it takes to shoot four rounds of Skeet. A more realistic number than Dan’s 7 since there’s more involved than just mounting the gun and shooting. Paul cautions against trying to concentrate for the full hour and a half. Continual concentration is mentally and physically taxing! You need to rest mentally between fields and stations. During those breaks in action Paul reviews the last shots he made. Did they feel good? If they did, he leaves his setup alone and
steps up and shoot again. He let’s his mind “go wherever it pleases” in the down time 8 between stations.
In trap you base your shooting on the squad’s rhythm. After you shoot you have about 20 seconds before your next shot. In that time, you reload, re-settle into your stance, and review the targets you will see on the post. I’m also timing my breathing, setting up my inhale to start two shooters before my
shot. My exhale starts on the shooter before me so that I hit the trough just as I’m mounting my gun. When I mount, I train
my eyes on my focal point not the gun and mount to my hold point. These are the little things that keep your mind occupied until you call “Pull”. Paul starts his Skeet pre-station routine as the shooter in front of him steps into the box. Pre-station routine reviews the targets he will see and may include visualization of the shots in his mind. When he steps into the box he performs his pre-shot routine and takes his sequence of 2 to 4 shots. Not much differently than you would in Sporting Clays except there are 2 to 4 more shots on the station. In Sporting I think staying in your rhythm and routine between pairs is the important idea to remember. Too many shooters try to rush through the station after breaking the first and second pair. Keep a steady cadence between pairs. Watch the top shooters and you’ll understand what I mean.

Magazine Review CLAY TARGET NATION – October 2020 Cont’d Maintaining focus and concentration is hard enough without letting emotions sneak into your mental state. John Shima gives us insight on “mindsight” this month. Mindsight is a self-monitoring system and focused attention program designed to maintain your composure during a shooting event. Mindsight monitors for the emotional pitfalls we can fall into during an event. Perfectionism (focus on score), social approval (what will my friends think?), irrational beliefs, fear of failure, and dwelling on errors are some of the common pitfalls. All of them defeat your ability to focus. Mindsight catches these pitfalls and pushes you back to concentrating on the shooting process.
Rely on pre-planned thoughts between shots to short circuit the emotional pitfalls mentioned earlier. Stay in the present and don’t project into the future. Many of the emotional pitfalls fall into the “what if ” category. As Mark Twain said, “I have been through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.” Stay in the present and don’t allow your mind to project negative results that could or could not occur in the future. Stay focused on the process of shooting the next target. Preplanned thoughts are part of your prestation routine. Positive thinking and visualization are a major part of this. Balance between the unconscious and conscious mind is the key. You can’t live and achieve in the unconscious alone. We need the focused concentration of the conscious mind to guide the unconscious in its acts. Keeping the conscious mind occupied with the process, with pre-planned thoughts, the pre-station routine, and the pre-shot routine helps block out the random negative thoughts and emotional pitfalls. 10
CLAY TARGET NATION – October 2020 Cont’d Teal are one of those shots many take for granted. Mark Chestnut believes we only need to worry about two types of teal, the straight up and the one that’s rising and going-away from you. Most importantly, watch the show targets and the shooters in front of you. Is the target really going straight up or is it angling somewhat to the right or left as it falls? For straight up teal Mark believes the best break point is just after the target stalls. The other teal should be shot as a swingthrough target. Start one third of the way
back from the break point. As the target passes your barrels swing-through it, covering it to break it. Mark suggests you use a slow mount on the straight up teal. On the going-away teal you should either premount or soft mount the gun. Remember it’s going away, any time you lose mounting is distance the target is traveling away from you and then transitioning from a half face target to one on edge. SHOOTING SPORTSMAN – November/December 2020 Tom Roster has built himself a niche in the shotgun testing field and has done a very competent job in my opinion. This month he advises us that with harder shot like bismuth and steel it is counter productive to use a Full choke. Modified or Improved Modified chokes will sometimes give a better and tighter shot pattern than a full. Second myth, your choke patterns the same for the same shot regardless of the type of shot. Each type and size of shot will pattern differently through the same choke. You need to fit your choke to the type and size of shot you are going to use. One size doesn’t fit all. 11
Magazine Review TRAP & FIELD – October 2020 I’ve always been a believer in shooting as many clubs as you can during the season. This prepares you for variations in back-
ground and trap field layouts. Ian Darroch agrees. Experience as many clubs as you can. Not all traphouses are the same and each club has their own foibles as to height and width of the house. Some variation is legal and experiencing fields different from your home club helps when you
travel to a big tournament. Traphouse width can affect your hold points and how you pick up the target as it leaves the house. You need to see that for yourself, not take mine and Ian’s word for it. Finally, even voice call systems can vary.
Some have delays and some don’t. It can be very disconcerting to experience a delay for the first time. I regularly practice with a delay at South Florida Shooting Club so I’m prepared for it when it happens.

TRAP & FIELD – October 2020 Jim Blevins answers mail this month. Is canting the gun bad? It can be and usual-
ly means your gun doesn’t fit. See a stock person like Pedro Bernal. Someone told Jim that their timing was off and they were in a slump. Jim and I agree, there is no timing in shotgunning. It’s all about rhythm. See the target, swing to the target until you get the correct sight picture, and shoot. Jim tells the guy to shoot some wobble trap. This may help, but his problem is more serious than that if he thinks he should be shooting a timing. Go get professional coaching help.

Skeet/Trap/Sporting Clays Rental Reopening Plan 9-23-20 To reopen Skeet/Trap/Sporting Clays club events and follow CDC Guidelines and applicable Emergency Orders, they will operate as follows: Activities still not permitted: Use of Buildings/Shotgun Hall.

Registrations should be done online when feasible, if on-site registration is required, the club is responsible for ensuring the registration is done outside of the building and registration should be done in a manner that prevents congregating.

Payments to the county will be made by credit card only.
·
Sporting Clays Squad size will be limited to 5.
·
Skeet/Trap will be limited to 5 shooters plus 1 puller/score keeper on any given field.
·
Unless actively shooting, facial coverings will be worn at all times. Members will be encouraged to bring their own hand sanitizer.
·
Members will not handle/touch other member’s personal items except for safety concerns.
·
No water coolers on the fields/stations. Shooters are advised to bring their own beverages.
·

Shooting station and field controls will be periodically disinfected.

Shotgun Hall restrooms will be available for use but only 2 people will enter the restroom at any given time.

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 1ST Registration: Opens 8:00 a.m. and will close at 10:00 a.m. All scorecards must be turned in by 1:00 p.m. in order to be posted.
Entry Fee: $60 N.S.C.A., $60 Hunter, $40.00 SubJunior, Junior No Scorers or Trappers will be provided. Shooters will be asked to squad themselves into groups of at least 3 and designate a field judge to verify scores for the squad.
Lunch will not be served. COURSE RULES: All shooters and spectators are required to wear ear and eye protection on the course. MAXIMUM LOADS PERMITTED: 12GA, 3 DR EQ, 1 1/8 oz. Shot 7 1/2.

The Youth Program started up again and has been well attended given the lack of momentum or advertising! Ten shooters showed up last Monday. We expect to see the numbers climb back to the dozen and a half to two dozen we had attending in the past. We could use some more coaches!
