Club News As you can see on the page to the right, Alex Rennert hit the podium again this fall at the Fall Selection Olympic Trials. Lookin good Alex!

The Skeet shoot was only attended by three shooters last month. Ed Ford and Rich Kassel both shot the full program of 200 targets. Ed led every event except for a very nice 48x50 shot by Rich in the 28 gauge event.

The trapshoot saw thirteen shooters blast 2,300 targets at the last shoot. Dax Demena shot a nice 97x100 under windy conditions followed by Coach Dave Glowacki with a 96. Jay Lehman led the Handicap with a lone 85 and Angel Estevez led the Doubles with a lone 88.

It was nice to see Paula Keim and Ruthie Flayderman in town after a busy summer. Ruthie made the Lady II All-American Second Team this year! Congratulations Ruthie!

The Sporting Clays program has traditionally not thrown an event is September.

Our new Sporting Clays Chairman has decided to hold a September shoot in 2020. The dates have been set for next year’s program and I will get it in the Newsletter next month.

next two Sporting Clays shoots are on pages 14 and 15 this month. Also you will notice the Flyer for the Annual BIG Children’s Foundation Charity Shoot is on pages 16 and 17.

This will be the 5th year we are holding the Charity shoot. This is a 50 target event, either trap or skeet, whichever you want to shoot. There is always an excellent lunch, a silent auction, door prizes, and a gun raffle. Participants receive free raffle tickets for the gun. You may purchase additional tickets for $5 a piece or 5 for $20. This is a fun event and I hope you will attend.

Big news other than Greg Ritch taking over the Sporting Clays Chairman position. You will now be able to pay for club events with your credit card! I want to thank Greg for spearheading this effort and getting it done.

Here we go again! Our home town son Alex Rennert entered the Fall Selection Olympic Trials and finished in the medals.

Above you see Brian Burrows (Silver), Derek Mein (Gold), and Alex Rennert (Bronze ). Alex finished the 250 target competition in third place and held his position in the shootoff with the other five shooters. As you know Alex won the Shotgun National Championship title earlier this summer. What a great year for one of our native sons. Some of you may not know Alex finished

school at University of Florida in Aeronautical Engineering then entered the Army so he could tryout for the U. S. Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU).

Alex was one of the first shooters to join Markham’s Youth Program. We are incredibly proud of him. Oh yeah, he was also an Eagle Scout!

Magazine Review TRAP & FIELD – September 2019

Weather can affect targets any time we step to the line. Wind, rain, and clouds change the characteristics of a targets path and how we pick them up after they leave the traphouse.

Ian Darroch suggests we make no changes to our shooting style in windy conditions. He even suggests we not change our hold points.

I do change hold points but the change is usually minimal.

I do suggest slowing down on windy days.

Most people speed up and truly, this is counterproductive. You need more time to see the target and assure yourself of its true flight path. Speeding up just means you are guessing where the target is going. See the target, go to it is the mantra you should be following. See and guess is not reproducible.

Ian does have some good suggestions for rainy days. Wear a hat with a larger brim, take a towel with you, and find a good raincoat that works for you. Just any old raincoat won’t necessarily do. Test several out. You’ll probably find you like one over the others.

Finally, voice calls aren’t supposed to give fast or slow pulls, but they do. Ian talks about moving early right after you call for the target.

You are not supposed to move until you see the target. If you are moving before you see the target, you change your look point and your hold point. Something is wrong! Moving before you see the target makes absolutely no sense. How can you move without seeing the target? Get that fixed!

I will be the first to say with age comes sleepless nights. Some form of insomnia affects a great deal of older shooter, not just the ones who are anxious about the next day’s events.

Bob Palmer has some excellent suggestions for getting a good night’s sleep before a competition or just for a normal night. First, no caffeine after 3 p.m. Stop eating at least two hours before bed and start an exercise regimen of some kind. Losing weight is a great help for sleeping problems.

If you are going to watch TV before bed, don’t watch the news. Watch something more lighthearted. Better still, read for 15 to 30 minutes before you go to bed. Of course, Bob’s final suggestion is to use imagery or mirroring, imagining relaxed or sleepy role models to use as a guide for falling asleep. The only sleepy role model I know is a dwarf in a Disney movie.

Try to come up with a better one.

CLAY TARGET NATION – 2019 September

“Every shot should have a purpose.” This was first espoused by Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott who are golf instructors and authors of some of my favorite books. John Shima also embraces this saying. I tell my kids on Monday night something similar. Obviously, a common and well understood saying. John breaks this down into what he calls functional training for skeet where a shot consists of mechanical, visual, and mental processes.

Remember there is a vast difference between training and performing. Here we will focus on training. As far as functional training is concerned, the mechanical aspect concerns gun fit, hold points, break points, and full body rotational when moving to the target.

Full body rotation means moving from the ankles up when swinging to the target. Visually we need to remember to keep the gun below the target’s line-of-flight and to set up in soft focus then transition to hard as the target ap-

pears. Mentally our focus should be on completing a shot using all the mechanical and visual factors just discussed. During training you mentally keep track of these things eliminating anything that doesn’t conform to the ideal mechanical and visual processes you are trying to perfect.

Setup correctly, then go into soft focus and watch the target break. Let the shot happen.

That is the perfect mental state. A quiet mind without expectations. As John says “integrate the various mechanical, visual and mental processes into a seamless and “mindless” shot sequence.” Good mechanical and visual fundamentals applied by a quiet mind is what you should be trying to achieve.

During competition, stick with the quiet mind and soft focus. Use self-talk to keep you on task. Forget any mistakes and concentrate on breaking targets. No self-analysis. Self-talk is there only to motivate you to stay on task.

Self-analysis is for training.

I truly love people who think swing-through means swinging through the target. That’s not how it’s done. If you have a gun that shoots 60/40 or higher, you swing-through the target from under it, always keeping it in view. Now if you shoot a 50/50 gun you may need to swing-through the target on the same line-offlight, but I don’t know any top shooters who shoot a 50/50 pattern.

In trap most guns are 70/30 or higher. If you have ever watched David Radulovich shoot you know he shoots off the end of his gun meaning his POI is probably 100/0 or higher.

Same with Joe Fanizzi. Clayton M. Rue suggests we swing-through the target by actually swinging through the target. Typical belief of a sustained-lead shooter. He does however tell us to use intercept instead of swing-through.

Insert behind and under the target then swing up to and in front of it. If you are swinging that fast you probably don’t need lead, but again Clayton is a sustained-lead shooter and only understands being in front of the target.

Gil and Vicki Ash agree with John Shima this month . In their words “if you’re thinking, you’re stinking.” You train on fundamentals until they are automatic, then you apply those fundamentals, concentrating on the visual acquisition of the target. They emphasize a detailed pre-shot routine, done with the same cadence and in the same sequence of checks for each pair. Visualize each shot and preprogram how you are going to shoot each target. No thinking once you call and your success rate is sure to improve.

Bill Elliot suggests some simple ways to build proficiency this month.

First, dry mount your gun at home.

My only caveat on this is get someone to check out your mount first.

If you practice a bad mount, you’ve just spent a lot of time drilling in bad fundamentals into your brain. Next, Go back to what John, Gil, and Vicki talked about this month, practice your fun-

damentals, especially your body rotation on shots. A great place to do this is the skeet field. I always liked John’s incomer drill, shooting only incoming targets as you move around the stations of the skeet field. This exercise is great for working on your body rotation.

Bill also suggests shooting for score as an exercise. This can be done on a regular sporting clays course or can be done on the easy course like Quail Creek’s Red course. Shooting five-pair stations is another good exercise. It makes four-pair stations a little less intimidating. Start shooting tournaments. The more you shoot, the less intimidating these become.

Finally, keep a journal and be conscientious about making entries.

Magazine Review Shotgun Sports – October 2019 When I go duck hunting in the STA’s here in South Florida, I pick a spot where I have cover to break up my silhouette and I have free movement to either my right or left.

Set up on the south side of a sawgrass clump and you need free movement to the right, set up on the north side and your swing will be to the left. That doesn’t mean you can’t screw that up! You still need to set your feet in alignment with the direction you will most probably be swinging the gun.

Todd Bender reminds us this month to be cognizant of how we are standing when we hunt.

your trigger hand. Mind what Todd advises, bringing the gun to your face is more important than seating the gun to your shoulder.

When you practice that mount, be aware how your face seats on the gun. This must be consistent or your results won’t be. Finally, pick your target and keep visual lock on it. Trust your swing. Don’t look back at the barrel and don’t measure. Again, practice Todd’s partner’s incomer routine. John Shima’s income drill allows you to practice a slow, relaxed mount and a full body swing.

Whether you are hiding in the sawgrass or walking up some quail, proper stance produces successful results. When duck hunting, don’t just stand there, set up to shoot!

Face in the direction you will be shooting and set your feet to meet your swing needs.

When walking up on a pointing dog, set yourself depending on which side of the dog you are on. Don’t set up on the dog, set up to swing to either the right or left of where the dog is pointing. Be ever aware of where you will be swinging.

Todd suggests, as most good instructors do, learn a clean, efficient mount. Practice it at home in slow motion until you get a comfortable feel for your gun. Never rush your mount. Probably the biggest mistake made while hunting is a rushed mount. Easy, relaxed mounts produce better results. Let your forearm hand lead the gun to the target then bring the gun to your face with

Michael J. Keyes, M.D. discusses learning and skill retention this month.

Adults learn in three ways, blocked practice, random practice, and learneradapted practice.

Blocked practice is best used to learn fundamentals. John Shima’s incomer drill is a great example as I have been harping on all day. Random

practice is just what it appears to be and isn’t as affective as the other two forms.

Learner-adapted learning is for more advanced skills and is better for long term retention than random practice. Learneradapted is where you practice a task until you master it. You only move on if you master the skill. This doesn’t mean you practice a 40 yard crossing target all day until you finally break one. Mastering means you can break 90% or better on the target that day and any day you shoot it after that. That’s what mastery is. Anything else is not.

Magazine Review Ducks Unlimited – September/October 2019 Decoying ducks require a different approach than pass-shooting them. Phil Bourjaily has some tips for the decoying kind. Definitely the most important rule in any kind of hunting, “don’t rush the shot.”

It’s starting to sound like a mantra, but it’s really a great exercise, practice John Shima’s incomer drill. This develops a nice, relaxed mount, and shot. When you set up

for decoying birds, limit your shots to ones in front of you between 10 and 2 o’clock.

Remember these are decoying ducks. Don’t intrude on your hunting partner’s shooting lane.

Fix your eyes on the duck’s bill. Decoying ducks are slower than pass-shooting ducks.

Use a slow, smooth mount with your eyes on the duck’s bill. Also, pick out one duck and stay with them. Don’t move off it till its tumbling to the water. The usual mantra is, keep your head on the stock. Sometimes after the first shot, if it is successful, you need to lift your head to pick out a second target. Drop the stock slightly off your shoulder, pick a new target, then mount into it and shoot.

Decoying ducks typically take a wider patterning shell and choke. Some shells hold too tight a pattern inside 30 yards as does your choke. You may want to go with standard steel shot and an IC or light Modified choke. Many non-toxic shotshells hold too tight a pattern and there are others specifically designed for close in. Research your ammo.

You can go to 2 ¾” shells inside 30 yards. This will cut recoil and make for a more recoverable second shot due to less recoil. Finally, mix up your loads. On your second shot put in some Black Clouds, HEVI-shot, or other longer ranging shells for follow-up shots.

Phil does double time this month and reminds us in a second article all the ways we can screwup our shot. The first way to guarantee a bad shot is to rush your gun mount. A poor gun mount is hard to recover from. Practice, practice, practice a smooth, relaxed gun mount. Lead with your forearm hand and bring the gun to your face with your trigger hand. Don’t aim! Look at the target not the barrel!

Don’t think negative thoughts. Think positive and concentrate on that duck’s bill.

Learn how to shoot with two eyes if you can. If you’ve never tried, try it. If you have problems with it, get some coaching

advice. Going back to the “don’t look at the barrel advice”, don’t look at the beads on the barrel and don’t try to measure lead.

Look at the duck’s bill and swing the gun.

Don’t forget to follow-through when you shoot. Keep your head on the gun. A good smooth mount, smooth relaxed swing, then follow-through gets the duck.

If it feels like you are swinging too fast, well, you probably are. Go back to the incomer drill advice. Learn how to swing a gun correctly!

All scorecards must be turned in by 1:00 p.m. in order to be posted.

Shooters will be asked to squad themselves into groups of at least 3 and designate a field judge to verify scores for the squad.

Youth Program

We continue to be busy on Monday nights. The beginners’ field has consistently gotten 12-14 kids every Monday night for over two months. The Intermediate field seems to get similar consistent attendance of around 8-10 shooters. Want to thank both of my assistant coaches Ramiro and David. I couldn’t handle the number of kids we get without them.

Thanks guys, you’re doing a great job! I also want to thank Howard Rennert for his quiet, but welcome support all these years. Thanks, Howie!
