Club News November must be the busiest month at Markham Skeet, Trap, and Sporting Clays. We have the Merritt Memorial Shoot, the NFL shoot, and the usual complement of trap and skeet tournaments.

As you can see there are some nice awards for the Merritt shoot.

Cash awards for Winner, RunnerUp, Class 1st-3rd, and Concurrents 1st and 2nd. Also we have door prizes for the attending shooters. If you are bringing a non-shooting guest who wants lunch, it is reasonably priced at $10. Greg has put some effort into the Sporting Program and I am glad shooters are jumping in to attend his shoots.

The last Sporting Clays shoot brought 55 shooters together.

Richard Azan led the field with a 95 followed closely by Scott Cobb with a 94. The Scoringpro app is back and preregistrations are up.

We can also take credit cards now. I hope this makes registration easier for all of our shoots.

Twelve shooters attended the last trap shoot, shooting 1,900 targets.

Jorge Puignau led the singles with a lone 97. Dax Demena and Enrique Bernet followed with a 94 and 93 respectively. Jay Lehman led the Handicap with a lone 88.

Doubles was tight race with Steve Norris shooting a roaring 92 followed closely by Alex Riera and Joe Loitz. Nice shooting Steve!

Check out the guns and gun rack on page 14-15. If you know anyone who is shooting those Nostalgia events the Ithaca Featherlight in 20 gauge is a good deal.

Looking forward to a busy month both at the club and around the state shooting. The FTA Fall shoot is at Silver Dollar November 7-10th. I’m hoping to make that shoot. The JB Maszk Hall of Fame Skeet shoot is at Jacksonville on the 16-17th. Unfortunately I can’t make that one.

I will be taking over South Florida Shooting Club’s skeet program starting in November. I hope to see all the Markham Skeet shooters there.

Have heard nothing on the Palm Beach Club other than the skeet houses are up and much of the other concrete work is done.

Sounds like they are making great progress!

Magazine Review TRAP & FIELD – 2019 October Jim Blevins talks about the complete shot this month instead of his usual fodder for the older shooter crowd. He starts off right in suggesting you get to the trap early with everything in order. All of your equipment is checked and everything is ready to go.

You should have checked your gun the night before you left the house is my recommendation. Correct chokes in the gun, stocks tightened, glasses wiped clean, towels in your bag, minor tools in a pouch, etc. All of this is a night before preparation and shouldn’t be done at the club. Don’t rush to the line after the squad in front of you finishes is a good suggestion of Jim’s. There is usually talking and score checking going on.

Let it subside before you take your position.

Develop a pre-shot routine is another good idea thrown out by Jim. I start my routine two shooters before my shot. Soft focus at the look point and close your gun as that shooter shoots. While the shooter next to me shoots, I steady my breathing to the right rhythm. After their shot, I mount my gun to my hold point, I am already at my look point, and I call.

I like the simplicity of Jim’s ideas on moving to the target. He says to “Move directly to the target without hesitation and break it”. Can’t get any simpler than that. Stay with the mount until the shot is taken and follow the chips to the ground. Eject the shell, rest the gun, and prepare for the next shot. If something distracts you as you mount or after you have mounted the gun, start over. Good advice, Jim. 6

Ian Darroch wrote on article this month on target color. If you find that interesting, this article is for you. I have nothing to report about it.

How do you reflect on your shooting? Do you do it after practices, after big losses, after big wins, when is the best time to reflect on your shooting? Bob Palmer weighs in with some ideas on reflection this month.

Pre-competition visualization is always a standard with Bob, so you should have seen this coming. Visualize that good feeling of success and hold that with you during the competition. Second is, you guessed it, incompetition visualization. Whenever you miss a target, replay it in your mind as a hit.

Bob correctly believes replaying the miss as a hit helps you self-correct the miss and erases the miss from your memory. If only!

Finally, post-competition visualization. Replay the event in your mind. This can allow you to isolate the mistakes so you can correct them. Re-imagine them as corrected

hits.

I have to be honest, this stuff doesn’t float my boat. I am way more technical with my corrections and simple visualization isn’t for me. I do believe it works better for skeet and sporting clays targets. This is Gil and Vicki Ash territory. Trap is not something you visualize first then shoot.

The target is not predictable. Skeet and Sporting Clays targets are known. Visualization is a tremendous help with those targets.

Shotgun Sports – 2019 November There’s some nice coverage of the Grand American in this issue featuring interviews with Joe Charnigo and Dillon Tosh. Michael J. Keyes, M.D.’s article on gun fit just didn’t have anything to report. Get a gun that feels right and you will shoot better is all I have to say on that. If it doesn’t break targets, talk to a coach.

Magazine Review CLAYTARGET NATION – October 2019 In John Shima’s first article he instructs us how to “pressure-proof ” our shooting.

Culling techniques from several sources, experts, and meditative techniques, John presents a three-step method to deal with pressure while shooting. First find your center.

In Eastern philosophy the body’s spiritual center is located two inches below the navel, which if you think about it coincides with your gravitational center. Given that shooting is an athletic activity when done correctly, awareness of this “center” position is important to stance and your ability to swing the gun. Swinging from your center of gravity is congruous with any physical activ-

ity, so align yourself with your physical center for the best swing. That it also aligns with your spiritual center is a definite bonus.

I have always been a believer in breathing as a major factor when you want to enter a deep state of concentration. John agrees. Be mindful of your breathing.

John likes to imagine breathing in positive energy and releasing negative energy and tension as you exhale. Breath from your diaphragm and reduce your breathing to one breath every 10 seconds. Three or four seconds breathing in, six to seven seconds exhaling. Rhythmic breathing releases tension from the body and gives your conscious mind another thing to keep it occupied. I like to time my breaths in trap to coincide with the rhythm of the squad. In skeet and sporting pacing your breathing on each station should work in harmony with your preshot routine of loading the gun, setting your stance, then visualizing your shot.

Build your own rhythm to prevent rushing through your pre-shot routine.

Finally, “redirect your energy”. The breath coming in is positive energy. Redirect it to the task of shooting. As it fills you up, redirect it to watching the target.

This is a little out there for me and sounds somewhat Bob Palmer-ish, but if you can imagine it use it.

A great deal is written about the “swing thought”. As Clayton M. Rue suggests, it gives the conscious mind something to pay heed to and turns down the conscious mind’s volume. Don’t know about the second part. As Gil and Vicki always say, the conscious mind can only hold one thought at a time. If you give it a swing thought, you’ve filled up its capacity. Keep the swing thought positive and constructive, of course.

I agree with Mr. Rue, keep the thought, process oriented: focus on the target, head down, front edge, etc. As you can see, I like to keep the swing thought short and concise. Finally, don’t make the swing thought results oriented. Break the target doesn’t cut it! “Smooth”, or “Follow through” are simple suggestions that remind you of fundamental truths about shooting and give your conscious mind something to execute.

Don Currie fields a skeet question this month and I have some input on that. The gentleman in question is having problems with High 2. This is a common problem target for right-handers. For many years I believed in the pundit suggestions for the look point and looked “just to the left of the barrels”. Don suggests this should be 4” to the left of the barrels. At 15 yards this would be about 5’ to the left of the hold point. I believed this as gospel for many years and struggled to realize the promised results.

Recently I changed my look points on 2, 3, 4, and 5. The hold points really didn’t change much, but my look points changed

dramatically. Instead of 4” to the left of the barrels I look about 1’ or 2’ past the window. This is a dramatic departure from 4” to the left of the barrels. I just wasn’t seeing the target early enough. Now I’m never behind the target. Do I need to look that far away from my barrels? Probably not, but I am still playing with it. So far, the results are incredibly positive.

Why am I able to look that far away from the barrels now when I couldn’t before?

Maybe it just came from finally having shot enough skeet targets and I’m comfortable with the game. Whatever it is, I like the new look and hold points and can break the outgoing targets on these positions quite well. As I refine this, I will keep you updated.

Magazine Review SHOOTING SPORTSMAN – November/December 2019 Early duck season is finished and from what I hear it was a pretty good hunt. STA 1 and 3/4 produced limits in short order for the first time in years. With that in mind, Chris Batha provides some words of wisdom on duck hunting in this issue. For instance, practice shooting both seated and standing. I wish we would take some time each year at Markham to set up a field with some sporting clays machines and chairs to practice practical hunting positions. I suppose you can take a chair to the line on the skeet or trap fields and practice from the shooting position.

Or you could call for the target then stand up to shoot. If you plan on getting up from a seated position to shoot, then a more practical approach is to call for the target as you start to stand rather than from the seated position.

This gives you a more realistic timeframe for shooting. Call while you are

sitting and the target will be 35 or more yards away before you get to your stance.

Start to stand first, then call.

Practice in the clothes you will be wearing when you hunt. The added padding will affect your shooting and you should be prepared for this. You may want to consider a thinner pad to compensate for your padded hunting coat. If you are hunting with a partner, determine your shooting lanes every time you set up. This assures a safer hunt and prevents any animosity after the hunt is over. Some of you may try some snow goose hunting this year. Be prepared to shoot out of a layout blind. I did this once in my youth (I was in my 40’s). Practice sitting up and shooting. You may find you need to do some exercising to get up to snuff on this. Chris reminds us to start out slow. Don’t try to rush this kind of exercise. Start with 5 to 10 reps and slowly build up over time.

Finally, Chris cautions everyone that one of the greatest skills you can bring with you on a hunt is the ability to sit still. Ducks can see the slightest movement and will shy away if they suspect there’s any threat. For those of you shooting out of a layout blind I have a personal suggestion. Take a book.

Last time I hunted snow geese I took a book with me in the blind on the second day. There is a lot of down time with nothing to do but laying there. I read all morning and when I heard the guide turn on the speakers I knew to put the book down and peak out of the blind.

ClayShootingUSA – September/October 2019 John Shima is one of the most well-read and knowledgeable shooting coaches for the mental side of the shooting game. The human condition being what it is means there’s a whole rainbow of approaches to the execution of mental discipline.

Of all these approaches, I like John’s the best. He prefers to go right to the root of the mental game and calls his approach the quiet mind method.

What is a quiet mind? One that has only one point of concentration, something simple to focus on to belay distracting thoughts from weakening our focus. John and I both agree his Basic Incomer Drill can be used to work on focus and consistency. Working on this drill, becoming comfortable with the quiet mind and total body swing this drill promotes, writes perfect execution of fundamentals into your game. It also “rewires or reshapes” your mental state, which will reap great benefits in your game.

John brings a new concept “mindsight” for our consideration in this article. Mindsight is the ability to apply mindful introspection and reflection

of own mental processes as we shoot. John wants us to be aware of what’s going on in your mind as you shoot so you can develop ways to counter negative feelings and reinforce positive ones.

A quiet mind and quiet eyes are essential is you want to pick up the target visually as it enters your peripheral vision. With mindsight John wants us to be vigilant about observing what we see when we shoot. In other words, “watch” yourself shoot sometime. Do you really do what you think you do? May sound strange but be aware of what you do when you shoot. Find your flaws and fix them. Go back to the Basic Incomer Drill and work on the fundamental of a perfect visual pickup and a perfect swing.

Truly love the coverage this magazine gives to the big shoots around the country. Also, there are always some great gun and equipment reviews here. If you aren’t a subscriber, you should be.

Magazine Review In John Shima’s second article he strikes a familiar note with me when he talks about barrel movement in non-elite shooters.

Elite shooters’ gun movement is smooth and direct to the target or break point. If you watch enough non-elite or beginning shooters you get to a point where you can read their mind just by watching their barrel movement. It isn’t as smooth as elites’.

The difference between elite shooters and non -elite shooters barrel movement can be explained by the difference in their visual acquisition of the target. Elite shooters move to a target in response to their visual detection of the target. They see the target and make their pre-planned move, executing a well-trained response to the target. Their gun movement is smooth and deliberate in response to what they see. A non-elite shooter may move early before good visual acquisition of the target and their move may not be a full-body swing from the ankles up. If they are just arm swinging, their swing will not be as fluid and it

will reach its limits before the full-body swing. A non-elite shooter’s stance will be less efficient as an elite shooter’s. This will also limit their swing radius and will affect their visual response to the target.

What he’s getting at here is be aware of your stance, swing from the ankles up, and most of all, get good visual acquisition of the target. Combine them all with the correct visual setup and you will start to shoot like an elite. Again, go back to my mantra when it comes to John, practice the Basic Incomer Drill. Done correctly this covers all of John’s key points. Execute it perfectly and all of your other moves will improve.

John throws in some skeet doubles advice that is new to me. He recommends stopping your swing before moving to the second target. This pause allows your eyes to properly shift to the second target. The swing isn’t a continuous one with a U-turn.

He describes it as a check mark, straight across to a stop then an angled move up to the second target. There’s a lot to be said about this. I believe you should watch the first target break in trap doubles before you move to the second target. Something about that pause allows a better visual acquisition of the second target when you move to it.

It makes for a cleaner shift to the second bird. The eyes lead the barrels. Come to a complete stop between shots to give your eyes a chance to get complete visual acquisition of the second bird. This works for any two-shot sequence, be it trap, skeet, or sporting.

Why do we miss the easy ones? Gil and Vicki Ash believe we miss easy targets because we are trying to think our way through them.

We are simply trying too hard, which means we are consciously trying, which means our conscious minds are getting in our way. Personally, I think we miss easy targets because we rush through the station and get careless and fatigued on the last pairs. We’re both right.

They suggest trusting yourself and sticking to a good pre-shot routine, one that you can repeat before each shot. They think your pre -shot routine should be detailed to keep you on track so your conscious doesn’t take over.

They also love the preloaded visualization of each shot. Think your way through the shot, visualize it, then execute it. Deliberate practice and a detailed pre-shot routine with visualization is their solution to those easy targets. They leave us with a final thought, learn how to self-correct. Get to the point

where you can self-correct and you’ve made it to the top levels of the game.

————————————————Second nature is defined as “an acquired deeply ingrained habit or skill”. Using a gear shift is the example given as something that is done by second nature, as if by instinct. There are several books and no doubt numerous articles about shooting “instinctively”. I don’t have a problem with pundits interposing instinct for second nature. I guess you could say the same thing about muscle memory. Your muscles don’t really remember, your subconscious intertwined with your nervous system is what remembers. Evidently Gil and Vicki Ash think we should distinguish between second nature and instinct and have written an article to articulate the differences.

Instinct is something we are born with. It is innate. We are born with a natural fear of falling. We are not born with the natural ability to shoot a moving target. We can however develop the ability to shoot a target by second nature which is implied to mean “as if by instinct”. This takes a great deal of conscious practice until the subconscious is sufficiently trained to react “as if by instinct”. The emphasis from Gil and Vicki is the hard work you must put in to get to the subconscious reaction level.

Why they want to debunk the “Instinctual Shooting” philosophy is beyond me. I think we all know, we have to practice diligently to make our shooting “as if you second nature”. Go get your gun and get to 13 work!

Youth Program

Mondays have been on fire for the last two months.

One night eight Boy Scouts showed up bringing the total shooters for the night to 28! On average Monday nights have been attended by about 20 Youth shooters.

I want to thank Ramiro Rodriguez for his help with the BIG Children’s Foundation Charity shoot. Steve, Ramiro, and I helped them with their shooters, running the fields and working with their contestants. A long day, but well worth it!
