Club News Well, Dorian was a close call! Thought shooting in South Florida would certainly be disrupted for a month to come, but we dodged the bullet. The Bahamas didn’t get so lucky. Our hearts go out to them and we wish them the best. Donate as much as you can to help these unfortunate souls. But for the sake of a high pressure zone, it could have been us. We only shot 250 targets at the last skeet shoot. Joe Bianculli won the only competitive event by posting a 46x50 in the 12 gauge. Trap was also sparsely attended by 13 shooters who shot at 1,600 targets. Dax Demena posted his usual 99x100 in Singles followed closedly by Jorge Puignau with a 97. There were not enough participants in the Handicap to register targets so the event was cancelled. Andrew Loitz posted a 96 in the Doubles event to lead all four competitors there. Local star Rodrigo Mehich led all 44 shooters at the last Sporting Clays event by four targets with a lone 97. Gary Gray followed with
a 93 and Bruce Taylor had a 91. The big news, Greg Ritch will be taking over the Sporting Clays Program here at Markham. Greg has been a fixture for some time at South Florida as a Referee at many of the shoots. I truly wish him success. He has already reinstated the preregistration through Scoringpro. Greg is a great guy bringing lots of enthusiasm to the position and I wish him great success. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank Cary Keshen for managing the program over the last year. He got great support from Charlie DeAngelis and Wayne South also and I would like to thank them for their loyal support of the Sporting Program over the years. Haven’t heard anything out of the Palm Beach Club lately, so nothing to report. There really weren’t many good magazine articles to report on this month. Last month was flush with good stuff and this month was a wash. See you at the Club!

TRAP & FIELD – August 2019 Do you have a squad you usually shoot with? Many of us do. In the Seventies when I shot more seriously, I had two standard squads. One was a group of guys from Ohio and Pennsylvania and the other was a group from Illinois. I shot well with both. The group from Illinois was not one you would conventionally choose. Roger Stinebring shot Post 1, I shot Post 2, Tony Marucco was on 3, Roger’s wife Sandy shot Post 4, and 5 was filled in by whoever else we could find. If you knew Roger, you may question how I could shoot seriously with him on my squad.
Amazingly, I always shot well with him leading this ragtag crew. When it came down to game time there was no goofing off on the field. We were all serious on the field, but between fields we relaxed and joked around. It was just the right mixture. Bob Palmer has some ideas about how you should approach your squad. He starts off with his standard, give yourself 30 minutes “Me” time before every event. I always did this and it does work. Bob goes into the negative people you can get on your squad and the loud, talkative types. If there is anyone that upsets you when you shoot, you must either kick them off the squad or find another squad. This is important! It will affect your shooting. Create a squad that helps you achieve what you want and do not compromise for the sake of friendship. 5
Magazine Review Shotgun Sports – September 2019 Michael J. Keyes, M.D. takes a shot at the “talent does not exist” agreement. The biggest factor that turns someone from an ordinary person into an expert is “deliberate focused work”. This encompasses a great range of activities. Deep thought and understanding about what you are trying to achieve is part of it. Practice on basics until it is automatic then pushing your limits in a natural progression is another. Perseverance is another important factor. Almost no one who reached the top did so alone. Good coaching doesn’t just shave time off the learning curve, it directs the learning curve away from wasted effort. Probably the greatest fault I see in shooting is the lack of
perfect fundamentals. In a perfect world I would have shooters practice just one or two target presentations until it looks like a ballet. Most people don’t want to dedicate the time to learn this. I wish they did. .

CLAYTARGET NATION – August 2019 I was surprised to read Paul Giambrone, III doesn’t like to pattern guns. The only time he wants to go to the patterning board is if he thinks one of his choke tubes is off. If he is going to pattern a skeet gun, he does it at 20 yards and always shoots two shots into the board. What he prefers is to shoot incomers on Station 6 and 7, low houses on Station 7, high houses on 1, and incomers on 1 and 2. If these targets aren’t being crushed or are off high or low, then go to the patterning board to see what’s going on. Finally, he prefers a slightly tighter choke for than skeet, but a little more open than IC. Also, he prefers 60/40 patterning over 50/50. The power of positive thinking cannot be underestimated or over emphasized. If you think or say negative thoughts, they are surely more likely to occur than something positive. How many times have you heard someone say low 5 in Skeet kills them then sure enough they miss one and it all goes downhill after that. Or maybe it’s rabbits in Sporting. Could be hard rights in Trap. Any negative thoughts about these targets almost guarantees you will miss them. Why haven’t you fixed these targets, so they aren’t a problem is the question I have to ask? Gil and Vicki Ash tell us to embrace the positive or at least stay neutral. Blank out your emotions, shoot from your heart. Stop letting your emotions interfere with
something so easy. Gil and Vicki want us to drill positive thinking into our subconscious. You might want to read a nice article on local Skeet shooter, Howard Chin. Nice bio on Howard and it’s great to see a local profiled. Also, in this issue is an article on the Vero Beach Clay Shooting Sports Club. This is the old Indian River Trap and Skeet Club. They have some great things planned for this club. Mick and Emma are staying on and will be running this wonderfully recharged club. 7
I would like to see every woman know how to handle guns as naturally as they know how to handle babies. Annie Oakley

Youth Program
August came in with a bang this year! We have had three or more new shooters almost every night last month. Many nights it looked like rain would wash us out, but we still had a very active month. One night all of the fields were underwater. The kids still wanted to shoot and we did, up on the grass behind the traphouse! I want to welcome Dave Glowacki to our coaching team. We can’t do this without the help of our coaches and we are incredibly happy to add another coach. Welcome, Dave! 24
