Club News Obviously, we are all proud of Reanna Frauens! She is up at the World English at Northbrook Gun Clubthis week. Looking forward to this week’s results.

Lots of rain has made late afternoon shooting and evening shooting very sporty. Youth program has been busy, but it would usually be more so if the weather would cooperate.

The last Skeet shoot was thinly attended with only four shooters shooting the 12 gauge event. Robert Vazquez shot a perfect 50/50 to lead the event. Only Joe Bainaculli and Robert shot all four events.

Robert lead over Joe in every event. Regardless good shooting guys!

Dax Demena shot a nice 99/100 in the Singles to lead all shooters in that event.

Alex Riera lead the Handicap and Doubles.

Luis Herrra and Rocky Long led the last sporting clays event with 96’s. Luis prevailed based on the shootoff stations.

Still nice shooting both of you. Of special note Gary Gray and Dave Stewart followed these guys closely with 94’s in Master Class. Nice shooting guys!

I went to the Job Fair at the Palm Beach Gun Club last month. I wish I had great things to say about that experience but I don’t. The state doesn’t know what they have with regard to that club. They talk a big game but they have never held a registered shoot at a state facility. They have a big learning curve and I suppose some of us will have to step up and help them

learn what they have gotten into. They really don’t know what they have in when it comes to the Olympic Trap and Skeet fields.

They hope to get the rifle and pistol ranges going in the next few months.

Under the best circumstances they will be ready to be open by the end of the year. They still need to get a potable water plant build. This is a real sticking point with the county. They will not give a Certificate of Occupancy until that happens.

The Trap and Skeet fields along with the Sporting Clays ring have all been surveyed. If you look at Google Maps you will see the completed clubhouses and the sporting clays ring and it’s 15 stations. Check it out!

I will say, there is a definite problem with the road to the club. It is sand and gravel. The Division Director was very effusive about his attempts to get $3,000,000 in funding to pave this road.

Not that I cared about his funding problems but he was very proud of his efforts. He knew nothing about running a gun club yet he was the guy in charge of all the clubs in Florida.

Regardless, I will stay optimistic about the club’s possibilities. I will help them as much as I can and I suspect many of you will also help them be successful.

I spent July 13th through the 20th checking my phone every day to see how Reanna was progressing at the SCTP National Championships. To say I enjoyed watching her shoot championship score after championship score would be an understatement. Early in the week she led all competitors with a 190/200 in Doubles Trap. Some higher scores came in later in the week leaving her tied for 12th overall in a field of 568 shooters. Her score was good enough to take home her first National title of the week, the 2019 Doubles Trap Ladies Varsity National Championship! This is the second SCTP National Championship in Doubles Trap for a Markham Youth Program shooter.

Andrew Loitz took home the Men’s Varsity title in 2016.

Next came the 2019 Skeet Ladies Varsity National Championship with a 199/200.

There was only one lone 200 in this event.

Her 199 tied for Runner-Up HOA over 1,111 other competitors!

In the Sporting Clays Reanna picked up her first Varsity Ladies Runner-Up trophy and later picked up another Varsity Ladies Runner-Up in the Trap event with a 199/200.

Last year she won the Trap National Championship with a lone 200/200.

During the week she won the SKB shotgun in the picture to the right in the 2019 Last Competitor Standing event. This is the second year in a row she has won the event!

Quite an outstanding feat.

At the end of the week when all the scores were tallied she was crowned the 2019 SCTP Ladies High Overall Champion! An event she led by 7 targets with 571/600 combined

Trap, Skeet, and Sporting Clays targets. On a side note her score placed her 4th over all the 876 HOA competitors, not just the Ladies!

I cannot say enough about the amount of competitive spirit it takes to compete all week long and step to the podium as Champion or Runner-Up in every event she entered!

Magazine Review TRAP & SKEET – July 2019

My shortest shootoff was one pair of Doubles and my longest was 150 Singles targets and I was in three of those. The one pair of Doubles was a sudden death shootoff. Both the other guys missed a target, dead/lost. All I had to do was break a pair. I chipped the second target after breaking the first. Regardless of length, all shootoffs are a unique experience. Most people who make it past the first round will tell you their chances of winning always went up exponentially. The first round is the critical one. Get through it and you are either already the winner or there are only one or two competitors left.

This month Ian Darroch has some helpful suggestions for your next shootoff. Get there early and relax for a few minutes. You don’t want to feel rushed getting to the shootoff field. Bring three or four boxes of shells with

you. One isn’t enough and eight are usually too many. When the shooting starts, shoot to your own rhythm not to your opponents.

Building your own shooting rhythm is especially important when you go into a shootoff.

When heading to a big tournament, practice some night targets in the weeks before you go. Get familiar with them so you won’t be surprised by the different conditions night targets present. Ian likes to talk to people between rounds, I don’t. I like to stay in my own little world and not get distracted. He also doesn’t look at other people’s targets. I am always watching targets to get an idea if conditions are changing. I don’t care if they break them or not, I’m just looking for targets flying higher or lower as the wind changes speed or direction.

Jim Blevins presents some ideas this month for lightening your gun to make shooting a 100 or 200 bird race less physically taxing for the “older” shooter. He also has some ideas to offset recoil once you’ve gone to that lighter gun. If this is a problem for you, I suggest you give his article a look.

Bob Palmer has some ideas about shooting with your spouse. My wife has no desire to shoot, so the subject is out of my wheelhouse. If you want to shoot with your spouse give his article some consideration.

CLAYTARGET-NATION – July 2019 I agree with John Shima, once you’ve gotten to the higher levels of any of the shotgunning games, the visual aspects are very determinant of your success or failure.

John likes to get his students seeing over the barrel of the gun. He raises the comb on a student’s gun, so they get the gun out of their visual field. There was a time where I would have disagreed with him, but now I am moving to his camp. This also means you are shooting a higher Point of Impact (POI) than before and you are floating the target. If that’s what it takes to shoot better, then so be it! Raise your comb and get with the program!

Most visual faults occur because of intention or diversion. John has consistently preached how your intention should be to watch the target break. See the target and let yourself take the shot without conscious interference. Anything that disrupts your rapt visual attention with the target increases the chance for error. Watch the target break!

Diversion is anything that draws your visual attention from the target. Shifting your vision from the focal point to the window of the skeet house or the trap is exactly what he is talking about. Also shifting focus from the target to the barrels or defocusing so you see both the target and your barrels is another fault in the process. Shifting focus to the area between the target and the barrels also occurs. Don’t do that! Soft focus at the focal point, then hard focus on the target until it breaks.

Soft focus at the focal point, move the gun as soon as the target appears, and stay focused on the target until it breaks. It can’t be said more simply. Doesn’t mean we pay heed to his advice, but we should try.

Magazine Review I have always been an advocate for the full body swing from the ankles up. This is the athletic way to shoot targets.

Clayton M. Rue adds we should look the same at the finish of our swing as we do at the beginning.

He believes in an even distribution of weight between both legs and with both heels on the ground. Your body should start and finish in perfect balance.

Having an uneven distribution of weight with the majority forward of your center mass keeps the gun swinging level and away from the pitfall of falling back on your heels. An even distribution of weight between both feet just isn’t realistic in the sports world. At some point you are almost always driving off the leading leg. Finishing in perfect balance with a smooth followthrough means you are in perfect balance with the shot’s rhythm just like the finish in golf or tennis. Almost all sports motions finish on the leading leg.

That’s what Clayton believes. I don’t agree being more old school and I have reasons.

Your body’s weight is unevenly distributed during the swing of a baseball bat, tennis racket, or golf club. All these swings start on the balls of the trailing foot and finish on the balls of the leading foot. Not an even distribution throughout the swing. Rhythmically the swing smoothly transitions from one foot to another and when done correctly never involves your heels. Uh, that is at odds with Mr. Rue. Whether you are swinging a tennis racket or a gun, as soon as the heels are involved you increase the probability you will swing high.

Shotgun Sports – 2019 August

When is the right time to get a new gun? First, ask yourself, why do you need a new gun? Possibly you purchased the wrong gun to begin with. Most first shotguns are purchased on a whim or without knowledge of the clay target games or their use as a hunting firearm.

The price was right or it just looked cool. Gun fit wasn’t a consideration. Mark H. Taylor presents some reasons why you should move on and purchase a new shotgun.

Over time you may develop more than a passing suspicion your gun doesn’t really fit you. This being known and after due consideration you may realize adjusting the shotgun isn’t practical. The cost may be unrealistic for the quality of the gun. Putting $600 worth of adjustments into a $500 gun doesn’t make sense. The best course of action is to start over with the “right” gun.

Deciding you want to specialize in one specific clay target game or one type of hunting is another good reason to get a new gun.

Trap guns just don’t work well for skeet or sporting and vice versa. Some people can do it, but it is rare. I will say, a high-level sporting shotgun can work for every game,

but a high-level trap gun usually will not work for skeet or sporting.

Finally, we sometimes lose faith in the gun we have and want to move on. Doesn’t matter what the reason is, we simply want something different. Maybe the gun has been giving us mechanical problems or perhaps we shot a friend’s gun and suddenly had an epiphany that this is the feel you have always wanted. Moving on is usually for the best. Don’t regret buying a new gun, however, keep your old gun and put it in the back of the gun safe. I’ve known several people who felt great anguish after selling old faithful. Keep it, you never know.

Magazine Review Shotgun Sports – 2019 August Cont’d

Most shotgunners start out using trial and error as a basis for learning how to break a clay target. Those first rounds can be abysmal! Eventually we all get the hang of it and start breaking targets. This is the feral route many shooters initially take.

Maybe later a clinic or private lesson is taken. This won’t necessarily repair the damage a feral start to the shotgunning game causes.

Much of the problem with a feral start to the shooting game is the lack of understanding that what a shooter may be doing to break a target may be the same reason they are missing targets. We get in our own way. Michael J. Keyes, M.D. explains how we need to understand what our errors are before we can understand how they affect us. A coach can give error -guidance, explaining how the mistake affects the shooter in the long run. They can then encourage their student to improve their technique by making the correct change.

Identifying the errors in your shooting system isn’t enough. You need to understand how the errors affect your shooting, then you need to implement changes to eliminate the faulty technique. Knowing what the problem is and why you need to correct it results in a more rapid and permanent change.

ClayShootingUSA – July/August 2019 Focus, Movement, Faith (FMF) are the keystones of Don Currie’s shooting phi-

losophy. If you are faithful to these three elements, you can self-diagnose your misses and correct them as they relate to the FMF system. The three elements of FMF are interdependent, not separate. The more efficient your muzzle movement is the easier it is to focus on the target. Faith comes in over the top of the first two elements.

Without confidence and belief in your focus and movement you cannot hope to hold your concentration on the target or get in sync with the target’s movement.

Don tells us to ask ourselves three questions when we self-diagnose our misses.

Did you see the target in detail during the shot? This has to do with the level of focus you had on the target. Were you looking at the rings on the target or an area, like the front or leading edge? Next, ask yourself if you chose the correct setup for the shot. Did your muzzle speed feel rushed?

Were your hold point, focal point, and break point in the optimal positions? This relates to your setup and your movement to

the target. A poor setup will destroy your move to the target.

Finally, what were you looking at when you pulled the trigger? Were you solidly locked on the target visually and as John Shima would say, did you watch it break? This is the faith aspect. Focus and move, then trust your shot and watch the target break.

Don believes most shots are missed due to lack of visual focus throughout the shot.

If you are not seeing the target break you probably already know what your problem is. This comes back to the faith component of Don’s shooting philosophy. Pick a section or aspect of the target to focus on and stay with the target visually until is breaks.

Watch the break and follow-through.

Lastly, if you feel your setup was correct, then your miss is due to focus and faith. If you didn’t feel smooth when you moved to the target, most likely your pre-shot routine was flawed and you need to adjust it. As with Bob Palmer and Gil and Vicki Ash, don’t forget to visualize the shot as part of your preshot routine and planning. Imagine where your mistake occurred and fix it mentally before taking your next pair. Focus, movement, and Faith are inseparable. Without one of these elements your shot is has only marginal probability for success.

Pay heed to each element.

All scorecards must be turned in by 1:00 p.m. in order to be posted.

Entry Fee: $60 N.S.C.A., $60 Hunter, $40.00 SubJunior, Junior No Scorers or Trappers will be provided.

Shooters will be asked to squad themselves into groups of at least 4 and designate a field judge to verify scores for the squad.

Lunch will NOT be served.

COURSE RULES: All shooters and spectators are required to wear ear and eye protection on the course.

Youth Program

Well, as you can see by the cover photo Reanna Frauens did really well at the SCTP National Championships. Steve, Ramiro, the other coaches who have helped over the years, and I are always humbled when one of our Youth shooters does well at a big event. Congratulations Reanna! We are so proud of you!

The program has been plagued with weather threatened nights which have limited attendance. On a high note we have had a ground swell of new Youth shooters lately. Every night seems to bring two or more new shooters to the programs. We look forward to our next National Champion to come through the program. All these kids have tremendous potential and we look forward to bringing it out.
