Club News The rain is here, but really hasn’t messed with operations at the club. We cancelled one Youth Night so far and hope we don’t have to cancel too many more this summer. As you can see on page 3, Alex Rennert, a product of our Youth Program is now shooting for the Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) and has truly made us proud! Shooting Olympic Bunker Trap for the AMU Alex won this year’s National Championship. I guess this means the next 12 months will be fairly busy as he travels to all the International Cup events all over the world. We all wish him the best as he gets ready for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Gary Gray led the last Sporting Clays event with a lone 95 over Runner-Up Scott Cobb’s 94 and Reanna Frauens’ 92.

Thirty nine shooters participat-

ed in the event.

Only four shooters attended this month’s Skeet shoot, firing at 700 targets. Ed Ford, Jr. won every event with some nice shooting. Even with four shooters, winning every event is pretty good shooting. Congrats, Ed! Eight shooters shot at 1,500 targets at the last Trap shoot.

Alex Riera, like Ed Ford, Jr., won every event. He led the Singles field by four targets, breaking a near perfect 99.In the Handicap he led with an 42x50 and the Doubles with a lone 88. Nice shooting Alex!

Now the latest update on the Palm Beach County Gun Club. They will be holding a job fair on Tuesday, July 16th.

I assume the purpose is to set up interviews for employees and volunteers. I will be attending the fair so I will give you an update after that.

Magazine Review SHOOTING SPORTSMAN – JULY/ AUGUST 2019 Over the last 10 years women have been joining the shotgunning ranks in increasing numbers. I’ve seen it in both sporting clays and trap. Shotgun manufacturers have started recognizing there is a difference between women’s gunfit needs versus men’s. Chris Batha points out the obvious differences and how women’s requirements are different than their male counterparts. Women have higher cheekbones and longer necks meaning higher combs or more appropriately Monte Carlo stocks for their comfort.

Pitch is another issue. Women typically need more pitch than men along with needing the stock’s toe being turned out. A more elegant grip with a trigger configuration closer to the pistol grip is also a must in most cases. Syren is one of the prominent gun lines made exclu-

sively for women. Fausti, Rizzini, Perazzi, Kreighoff, CZ, and Beretta now all have gun lines specifically for the lady shooter. If you are considering a shotgun for your wife, girlfriend, or daughter, you have a wide range of excellent sporting arms for these significant others.

For the ladies reading this, your welcome to the shooting sports is well represented by this wonderful range of shotguns.

Tom Roster has some opinions on high versus low pressure loads. First, pressure has nothing to do with felt recoil. Only when slower burning powders are used to achieve the same velocity do we see any difference. Also, when it comes to lower pressure loads, they don’t guarantee better patterns. Tom has only measured situations where lower-velocity loads not lower -pressure have produced better patterns. Finally, low pressure loads at the 7,000 psi are not guaranteed to be safer in older firearms. To his knowledge no safety testing of these lowerpressure has been done, so guide your actions accordingly.

TRAP & FIELD – June 2019 Ian Darroch brings us his second installment on Hold and Focal points. He advises setting a focal point one foot higher than your hold point. This means you are looking one foot over your gun. Ian admits that this is all about comfort. Some shooters need to look closer to their gun than others. Experimentation with focal points in comparison to your hold points should be done in a planned manner and you should keep track of what you tried.

Write down what you intend to try and what you did and your feelings about the results.

This way you assure yourself you tried every possibility and didn’t leave anything untried on the table.

One of the biggest problems I see is shooters who hold too high over the house. This creates blind spots as the angle targets leave the house. Angles come up under your barrels instead of coming out over them. When they come out under your barrels, angles are hidden from view. If the shooter moves too quickly on these, they spoil the line and cover the target. For this reason, Ian discourages holding more than 1 ½’ over the house.

Looking under the gun or through it is another focal point method. For a two-eyed shooter soft focusing at the area above the top edge of the house allows them to effectively have a full range of vision as if the gun isn’t even in their visual field. Ian lays out a very helpful reminder when you use this method. Even though you can pick up the target as soon as it appears, don’t move too early. Let the target establish its flight line before moving.

Ian says moving early messes with

your timing. Truthfully, there is no timing, it’s rhythm. Moving with the target as it leaves the house spoils the line and what appears to be a good sight picture is in truth a swing over and behind the target. By the time the shot is taken you are under and behind it.

The sight picture looks right, but the actuality is, you were covering the target with the gun and you shot at an illusion. You saw the target perfectly, but the gun wasn’t where you thought it was. This problem is common on angle targets from Post 2 and 4. Take special care to move after the target has passed your barrels on those posts.

Finally, if you are going to look through the gun your hold point shouldn’t be higher than 1 ½’ to 2’ over the house. Your focal point should be about 1’ over the house. Ian believes your eyes shouldn’t stray too far from the gun. Trial and error, recording your results is the way to perfect your hold and focal points. Get to work!

Magazine Review TRAP & FIELD – June 2019 Cont’d Good and bad etiquette are rarely discussed as part of the mental game. This month Bob Palmer does a good job addressing the issue.

He talks about three instances where you may break etiquette and the consequent harmful effects on your mental game. First, is the complaining faux pas. There is no point complaining about how hard the targets are. Dealing with conditions is a problem for all of us, be it weather or poor setting. Get over it. You’re just looking for an excuse to shoot poorly.

Some of my best shooting has been done in atrocious weather. Make a positive out of it and embrace the challenge.

Second, don’t do any coaching during a competitive round unless someone solicits the advice. Again, you are just trying to bring attention to yourself when you should be getting into the Zone and paying attention to your own game. Third, you don’t remind a pitcher

he’s pitching a perfect game.

Same is true in shooting.

During a competition, don’t talk about score until the day is done. It does nothing but bring your attention out of the Zone and the process. Score only matters after the last shot.

TrapShootingUSA – July/August 2019 This is the Florida Edition of TrapShootingUSA. The Southern Grand and the Florida State Shoot are both featured in this issue. You’ll see pictures of Paula and Ruthie and many other of our Florida shooters in this issue. Larry Grenevicki, M.ED. included an article on the Black Diamond Company this month. We used to throw Black Diamond targets at my dad’s club in the 60’s and 70’s. That was before the days of flame orange targets.

Black Diamonds were the standard yellow.

Larry also submitted an article on a friend, RJ Stuart and his shooting processing service. It’s a nice history of computing in the administration of registered shooting.

Shotgun Sports – July 2019 Dave Robinson throws out some shotgun buying ideas this month for a lady shooter.

Like Chris Batha, Dave understands there are some issues to buying a shotgun for a woman over a man. He and I both believe that a first shotgun should be a semi-automatic. The recoil is less and to be honest they’re more forgiving when it comes to gunfitting. Semiautos are versatile. Most come with shims to change the stock and choke tubes for the barrels.

One thing Dave missed was the great availability of used stocks for semi-autos like Berettas. You can find all kinds of these on ebay. Since you are going to cut the stock to accommodate the smaller stature of a lady shooter, why not buy a used stock to cut and work with until you decide on a final gunfit configuration. This way you have the original stock in pristine condition once you decide on a perfect gunfit.

Don’t forget the enormous amount of options you have with butt-pads these days. “Rocker” pads are a good idea for a lady since they have no toe.

Shooting vests are also recommended for the lady shooter as it gives an extra level of protection and mitigates the edges of the stock.

Don’t buy cheap ammo for a beginning lady shooter. Get a decent brand at 1145 fps and 1 ounce of shot if possible. Comfort is im-

portant when you are shooting, so make that first experience as stress and pain free as possible. Use good ammo and good padding. ___________________________________ Johnny Cantu writes an article every once in a great while and this month is one of those times. His suggestion this month is to try a shorter stock. I am an advocate for shorter stocks also. Shortening a stock or shooting with a shorter stock are issues that first need to be addressed at the shoulder. Some people mount the gun in the shoulder pocket or out on the ball of the shoulder. If you shorten their stock, you create problems.

They learned how to shoot with the gun out there and that dynamic can change dramatically if you shorten the stock.

I’m not saying he is wrong. Moving your face forward on the stock is almost always a good thing in my opinion. Johnny likes how his shorter stock is more tightly snugged into his face and shoulder. With this he feels he has more fine control of his barrels. As I stated earlier about the ladies’ guns, find a used stock to cut on and play with when it comes to cutting a stock. Cut away and see if you don’t feel more comfortable.

Magazine Review Shotgun Sports – July 2019 Cont’d Skilled shooters with a properly fitted stock will show almost no visible signs of recoil after firing a shot. Their body barely moves because the engineering of the gun and stock match perfectly with the shooter’s stance and mount.

This means there is no “recovery” after a shot.

It is one smooth transition from one shot to the next. Lesser shooters must recover from a first shot if they are going to fire at a second bird. Stuart L. Lucas has some ideas on second shot recovery this month for those shooters.

Stuart’s first suggestion is to rely on technical improvements to reduce muzzle jump or bounce. Porting is one way. Porting barrels correctly will improve your muzzle bounce.

Mark Taylor recently said he has yet to find a ported choke tube that had any effect on muzzle bounce, but Stuart believes the Comp Choke from Briley helps. He also suggests barrel weights. Yes, these will all help, but the real solution is a better fit to your gun and improved stance and mount.

If you are affected by muzzle bounce, have someone take video of your doubles shooting.

If you are being affected by the first shot in a double, go to a qualified instructor. You can work on improving it yourself, but this begs the question: Why didn’t you improve it before?

What makes you think you can fix this on your own if you haven’t before? Get with a good instructor and work on fixing the core problem.

——————————————————Most of us know we see better with both eyes open, when we let in as much light as possible to our eyes, and that we have improved depth and peripheral perception with both eyes open.

Mark Taylor has an article this month on eye dominance that touches on several issues.

While the article is thorough in some explanations, his suggestions are standard: if you are cross-dominant, switch, if you can’t switch or don’t want to, use an occluding tape to block your dominant eye, and finally, if all else fails close your dominant eye. Mark finally suggests we all get our eye dominance tested to see if we really are shooting with our dominant eye.

Not a bad idea.

Post Reflective Learning (PRL) is an afteraction report and review of a training or competitive round designed to improve your shooting both mentally and technically. Michael j. Keyes, M.D. tells us PRL is a system of objective observations, evaluation, and analysis that allows an athlete to create an action plan for improvement. The first step is to record what happened in the greatest detail possible. This means recording all the technical flaws you observed while you shot and your emotional reaction to them. Recording your feelings is important to the analysis.

Knowing your psychological response to your shooting as it happened tells you how your mental state affects your shooting, either positively or negatively.

Next evaluate what went right or wrong. Create a list of the actions that went right and wrong then attach an emotional state number to each event. Use a numbering system, 1 is good to 5 being bad, and record why you gave it that number. This makes evaluations easier in the future. Now analyze what you’ve recorded, looking for patterns that lead you out of or into the zone. Sometimes you will have

to dive back into the recorded ob-

servations to make sense of your evaluations and analysis.

Finally, record your conclusions and create an action plan for your next practice session.

Your conclusions should take into account your progress toward your goals. Are you making progress or do you need to push harder and practice more? Develop an action plan to take you to the next level or to fix any outstanding issues. You should have shortterm and long-term action plans and goals.

Tweak your technique as needed then work on things that keep you on the path for longterm progress. Each of the steps for the PRL should be distinct and separate. A diary is a must for the PRL. Record, analyze, evaluate, then form a plan to improve.

Magazine Review CLAYTARGET-NATION – 2019 June As usual, John Shima throws out some good ideas this month. Don’t overthink your shooting, especially when you are firing away during a competition. That is not the time to be analyzing your shooting. Analytical thoughts about your shooting should happen when you are planning a training session. During a competition we need to keep our analytical mind occupied by putting it in charge of going into soft focus.

John is consistent in his message, mindfully go into soft focus at your focal point, let your subconscious take the shot, and watch the target break.

Gil and Vicki Ash tell us they are going to talk about self-correction this month. First don’t get emotional about practice misses. I’ve always said: You’re supposed to miss in practice! Only by missing do you learn what not to do. Their formula for self-correction is to go back to the break point, visualize what occurred, then make a change to what you did and re-visualize the shot with the change being implemented.

Go into your Pre-shot routine, call for the target, and execute the shot applying the change.

They finish by emphasizing the use of sustained-lead as the only practical swing method which is par for the course for them. Finally, pre-load the shot by visualizing it before you take it.

——————-———————————— Gil and Vicki Ash give us some tips this month on going to tournaments. If you want to perform well, get your normal amount of sleep. For some this is eight hours, uninterrupted. Get to the club early so you are ready to go when your flight comes up. Shoot side events early, leaving the weekend for only the main event. Use small local tournaments to test your options. Do you do better driving 2 or 3 hours to a shoot or do you shoot better if you stay near the club the night before? Find the routine that works for you and stick with it.

——————— — If you are just starting out in sporting or skeet you might want to read the articles written by Clayton M. rue and Paul Giambrone III. They submitted two articles for the beginning shooter. Clayton goes over some swing methods to use for specific targets and Paul basically gives a whole primer on the game of skeet with hold and look points. Paul’s article is too detailed to say anything about it other than read it if you are just starting out.

So, you want to become the total package?

Marty Fischer lays out the four elements for becoming the total package. First is visual focus. When you are really insync with the target and seeing it well, it slows down. Be more observant about your soft focal point. The right soft focal point flows right into a hard focus on the target. Find the point where the target stops being a blur, set your soft focal point just before this point and you will achieve the visual focus you want.

Second, you need mental focus if you ever want to be consistent. Stop worrying about missing and concentrate on the process, as

John Shima always advises. Worrying about missing is score oriented and detracts from your attention to the target. Put your focus on seeing the target break. Consistency is the key to mental focus. Develop a Pre-shot routine that is well paced, allowing time to recover after each shot so you can reload what you did on the first pair. If you broke the first pair reload the Pre-shot routine exactly as you did the first time, same hold point, focal point, breakpoint, and insert in the same point along the line-of-flight as you did the first time.

Balance and mechanics are the third elements that are vital to success. Good gun control, smooth swing, sync with the target, combined with minimal, unrushed gun movement produces the best breaks. Flawless fundamentals are what we’re talking about.

Finally, have a target plan for both the first and second target. Get a good read on each target before you commit to a plan.

———————————————— Shoot-offs are sometimes the most pressure you ever feel in your life. Todd Bender has been in a few in his career and has some advice on what to do when you get in them too. Stick to your routine and the process. Your Pre-shot routine is your friend. Stay in the moment and don’t worry about winning. Just let it happen. If you never built a mental Pre-shot routine create one. Without one your mind can stray over to expectations of results and that’s where the pressure to perform starts.

Build your routine and stick with it.

Youth Program

School is out and Monday nights have been busy! The last Monday in June we had six new shooters on the beginners field along with five from previous nights. I can’t tell you the last time I got six brand new shooters in one night. Two or three is a lot, but six hasn’t been seen is quite some time. Again, congratulations to Alex Rennnert, a graduate of our program who won the 2019 National Shotgun Championships! Our small program has produced numerous national champions and I cannot tell you how proud we are of Alex. South Florida again proves we are one of the great hubs for producing great Youth shooters. Steve and I are always humbled by the our students’ successes and again we stand honored to have been part of their lives. Way to go Alex!
