In April, Michael announced his resignation from Smoke Rise Baptist Church, effective on May 31. It was not an easy decision for him. If you speak with Michael, you will discover his work at Smoke Rise was more than merely a job; it was a calling and a ministry.

The Tijuana Mission Team thanks everyone who "adopted" a book for the library at Centro Shalom Tijuana (CST) at our "Give More Store" last December. Sixty-five books have been shipped to First Baptist Church Lemon Grove in San Diego, who has a partnership with CST.

FR O M T H E PASTO R CH RIS G E ORGE - Senior Pastor

In September 2009, Michael Danishek arrived at Smoke Rise Baptist Church as our Manager of Multimedia. He had just completed a meaningful mission trip to Tijuana and felt led to serve, not only overseas, but also in our congregation. For nearly 10 years, he has shared his audio/visual and technological expertise with us and enhanced the communications, programming, and worship at our church. In March, in a sermon entitled “Who We Are and Where We Are Going,” I proclaimed, “We are doing things today that people could not have imagined in the past. Good things. People are being reached who were previously unreachable. Do you know, right now, 25 folks are at Park Springs Retirement Community worshipping with us through streaming? Did you know that there are people at home in the Atlanta Metro area who can no longer get out on Sunday morning, but are faithfully watching our service each week? Did you know that sometimes 150-200 people are streaming our service or watching through Facebook?” Do you know who made this possible? Michael Danishek. He was hired to help with sound, but found a way to make our worship accessible to people around the community, the country, and the world. He has shared with us his photography skills, capturing memorable moments that we will always treasure. He has created videos that tell the stories of the missions and ministries of our church. Michael has not only been a part of our staff, but also a beloved member of our faith family. His smile has brightened the halls of the church and his sense of humor has lifted our spirits. In 2017, Michael agreed to serve as a deacon, loving the families of our congregation and providing support to those who were sick or recovering from surgery. If you talk to Michael, he will not speak of his accomplishments, but rather express gratitude and thanks for the many volunteers who have worked with him. But, it is those very volunteers that recognize his value. Bill Blanton who serves on the sound committee wrote, “I hesitate to think where our church would be without the expertise of Michael Danishek. His leadership of our audio/visual program has taken it to a very high level. His knowledge of streaming has allowed our church services to be experienced by anyone with an electronic device. His videos have added another dimension to our worship services. Michael possesses the technical skills needed to serve our church; but first and foremost, he has a heart that strives to honor the Lord in all that he says and does.” In April, Michael announced his resignation from Smoke Rise Baptist Church, effective on May 31. It was not an easy decision for him. If you speak with Michael, you will discover his work at Smoke Rise was more than merely a job; it was a calling and a ministry. After prayer and discernment, Mike and his wife, Alecia, have sensed a new calling and will be moving to Waco, Texas this summer. They look forward to being closer to Alecia’s family, having more time to spend with their precious son Joseph, and welcoming a new little one into the family in the Fall. With gratitude for Michael’s service and with deep love for this family, we express to them our appreciation for their service and pledge to them our love, prayers, and support in this next chapter of their lives and ministry.

"Give More Store" Purchases 65 Books for Tijuana Library The Tijuana Mission Team thanks everyone who "adopted" a book for the library at Centro Shalom Tijuana (CST) at our "Give More Store" last December. Sixty-five books have been shipped to First Baptist Church Lemon Grove in San Diego, who has a partnership with CST! Staff members will take the books across the border to CST, where they will be placed in the library collection in the Manna Before and After School program.

The children in this program have little access to quality books and these titles are either Spanish-English or entirely in Spanish. The children are elementary to middle school age and the books target this range, along with a few adult titles for the workers and young adult staff at CST. Each book has a book plate with the donor's name, along with an explanation (in Spanish) that the book was donated by a member of Smoke Rise Baptist Church. If you are unable to remember the title(s) that you donated, please contact Karen Bates (batestk@bellsouth.net), and she will gladly send you a reminder message.

NEW YORK MISSION TRIP $300 plus airfare

CEL EB R AT I N G K ATHY DOBBI NS Rev. Kathy Dobbins has served faithfully as our Minister of Spiritual Formation for the last 19 years. Kathy came to Smoke Rise with a background in ministry and business. After a successful career in commercial real estate, Kathy followed the leadership of the Spirit in her life and went into the ministry. Kathy was nurtured for ministry in a church that fully affirmed women in ministry and after completing her theological education and garnering valuable ministry experience, she was called to Smoke Rise. Kathy recalls her first thoughts when the possibility of fulltime ministry stirred in her. “People like me don’t go into professional ministry,” she thought. “One day I was reviewing the journal I kept at the time and came across an entry dated two years earlier in which I had written the word ‘ministry’ with a question mark beside it. As I entered my new ministerial role, it was like slipping my hand in a glove. The last piece of the puzzle fell into place for me. I had come to love the work of the church and was finally able to see that God used the people of the church, the desires of my heart, and the circumstances that lined up just right to communicate my calling.” “There are so many areas of service where Kathy’s diligent work behind the scenes was key to our success as a church,” said Bart McNiel. "One of the areas where Kathy’s absence will be felt is on the pastoral care front. Kathy was also faithful in covering hospital visits each week and at other times. I will miss working with her.” During her time at Smoke Rise, Kathy has brought leadership and support to Sunday school, the women’s ministry, “Prime Time” events, special-themed events, and retreats. Under her guidance, Wednesday evening studies have been diverse and engaging each week. During her time with us she also developed discipleship and leadership training programs, as well as a “living room” to promote and teach people prayer practices designed to lead them into deeper fellowship with God. When she first arrived, Kathy oversaw outreach of the church and teacher training events. For special worship events, she provided set up and support. In her early days, she helped start a class for young singles, and the faith and issues class that she helped to form will continue to meet each week for Sunday School when she retires. “Over the last 19 years, I have continued to discover in others and in myself the way God never stops working to help us become the people we are called to be,” said Kathy. “My ministry has largely been one of equipping God’s people for service, and I am grateful for each day of service at Smoke Rise. I learned my calling through the encouragement of a local church, and it is wonderful to be part of a church like Smoke Rise that affirms my giftedness for ministry.” We invite you to stop by the church office to leave a card or personal note for Kathy as she prepares to retire. Following retirement, Kathy will be taking some personal time away, but plans to come back to Smoke Rise as her church home. Join us on June 2, 2019 at noon in the Fellowship Hall immediately following worship. as we celebrate Kathy’s ministry and honor her on the occasion of her retirement.

New Volunteer Ushers Needed Our usher teams for the 11am worship are in need of new volunteers to greet worshippers, hand out orders of service and help receive the offering. New volunteers will be asked to serve once each month with occasional requests to serve two Sundays when we have a "fifth Sunday" month. Because ushers rotate, it is a simple way to serve at our weekly worship and to get to know fellow church members. We are looking for volunteers with warm smiles and willing hearts. Smoke Rise Baptist FamilyMy heart is filled with excitement and love but also sadness as my family transitions to a new season of life. The move to Texas was always in my families future but with the exciting (but unexpected) news of another baby on the way, the future became the present and an opportunity to move in July completed God’s plan. As Winnie the Pooh says, “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” The past 10 years have been an amazing journey both personally and professionally. You have taught me what it means to be the hands and feet of Christ. You have loved my family and taught us to love others as Jesus loves. I am forever indebted to you and humbled to have been able to serve along side you. If my time at Smoke Rise has only taught me one thing, it’s that Smoke Rise is full of the most amazing and talented people. You are who I have made video’s with and photographed loving others. Whether you are a staff person or church member we worked together to enhance programs, ministries and worship. And I stood beside you when “technology isn’t working right” occurred. Thank you for ministering to me and my family in so many special ways. It is a gift I could never repay, a love that will never fade and memories that will not be forgotten. With Much Love and Appreciation, Michael, Alecia and Joseph Danishek We already know and love her and are very excited that Stacey McNiel has agreed to be our director of the Weekday School. Stacey has been our Assistant Director for the past two years and brings stability and consistency to our head office. Stacey received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Mobile where she was valedictorian of her class. She continued her education by earning a Master’s of Science from Florida State University. She has been in the education field for over 25 years. Stacey brings a strong background in math and science to our Weekday School program. Away from the Weekday School, Stacey stays busy raising two wonderful girls: Mattie and Evie. Stacey is the wife of our Associate Pastor Bart McNiel and together they enjoy going on day trips with their girls. The Weekday School Board is excited and knows Stacey will continue to do a wonderful job at the school. Be sure to congratulate Stacey on her new position when you see her around church. FA M ILY M I N I ST RY AT SM OK E R I SE I’ve been teaching in the Pre-K and Kindergarten Sunday school class for a few years now. I really enjoy getting to work with the kids, especially when it means that I am lucky enough to form a connection with them that lasts even after they move on to older classes. One such connection I have made is with Caiden Wilkes. He’s a really sweet kid. When he came to Sunday school he was always the first one to help with anything he could. We would sit together during circle time and play statues afterwards while we were waiting for the parents of the kids to come. Caiden and I share some interests from wrestling to Georgia Tech, and this helped to cement our connection. Eventually, Caiden moved on to the grade-school department of Children’s Ministry, and I graduated high school and moved on to Georgia Tech’s campus. Still, whenever I come home, I make an effort to find him and say, "hi." A short time ago, Caiden had a brief stay at the hospital. I’m glad I was able to go for a visit to brighten his day some and give him a gift. - V. Alex Burton
